I played all the maps on stream tonight.
Honestly I thought most the maps were good. Pressure was the only one where I went “this is shit”.
Demolition felt a bit unfinished. Like the spawn room spawns you facing the wrong way. And a lot of the map seems built for parkouring around but it’s not quite polished. You have things like clipping above rooms so if you don’t jump directly into them you get shoved away from them and stuff. But otherwise it was fun
Cargo could be held by me solo with a banner. But I liked it
I enjoyed cargo and citadels map layout so far
but I hate how citadel uses a tank as a bomb cart that oyu can literally build sentries and dispensers on

Conifer was pretty cool. Not the best designed map but it feels like a 2013 map, it’s open, has goofy spots and routes, and is fun.

its so irritating to play against.
I think the sentries on the tank are fine. Tbh it seems super defense sided because literally everything is an uphill battle because they expect sentries on the tank to be OP. But even with short circuit spam you can kinda just shoot them as sniper, or any hitscan class.
Or there’s some good flank routes that only projectiles can take by jumping around edges of the map and shoot the blue team in the cheeks then kill the sentries
I think the spawn rooms could use some work but with some updates I think it could be okay.
my team on several different servers failed to do that
so maybe thats why I got annoyed by it that much
Yeh a lot of people assume explosives are the counter to sentry spam. But vs short circuit it’s literally worthless.
I do think short circuit deserves a “does not resupply from dispensers or payload carts while active” stat.

in matches (casual & comp, not that the latter has autobalance) its based on MMR, otherwise its based off of your score
tl;dr it gets the total MMR or score for both teams, calculates the difference, then takes that number, divides it by 2, and then divides it by how many players need to be moved to get the average MMR/score needed per player moved to try and balance it out
at which point it then tries to find candidates that are as close to the value as possible
which imo kinda... sucks?
I feel like usually when autobalance is needed its because several players leave, usually because they're losing, so instead of moving players over that are potentially having a massive impact on their team (carrying, etc.), it will almost always pick someone that is simply ok at the game
so nothing will change
I'm not sure what a better solution would be, and I get why they would do it this way, but I don't know how effective it really is
also it sort of means that if you don't want to get autobalanced, simply either be really good at the game or really really bad
In tf2, kills are a pretty effective metric for how useful you are
So probably something like weighting off KPM but still being random could be useful

Reminds me of like 5 years ago when there was a spy in RGL who was blatantly using a lag switch to phase through players, walls, etc. But tf2 tools couldn’t prove it was an external program and there were no restrictions on internet quality at the time. whereas on an LCD the pixels change from one opacity to another gradually over the course of one to several milliseconds (and potentially overshoot their target depending on how they're driven)

this used to be in tf2 if you used hwm models but those were deprecated in like 2011
pretty sure there's a mod on gamebanana that recreates this on top of the regular non-hwm merc heads but it has a ton of other unnecessary changes to the models
thankfully, already running the latest firmware, otherwise I would’ve had to buy a fucking usb-a to usb-b cable (common with printers?). anyway TF2 is the only game where it’s noticeable, and only if I’m looking for it, so no big deal @eternal haven

so a currently non-beamed/flickering player draws half the normal uber usage rate, i.e. 6.25%/second. so one target switch or beam disconnection is going to cost 6.25% or 0.5s
and continuously switching beam between N players will mean that the uber lasts 8/(1 + 0.5(n-1)) = 16(1+n) seconds. and i suppose the last flickering second comes for free or something on the final target and the medic
so TIL that just disconnecting your uber and running away will cost 0.5s of self uber (but if you reconnect within the flickering period, it will stop the accelerated drain)
according to this logic, flashing another player in the last few ticks before your uber goes to 0% should give free extra flicker duration

With a bit of tweaking this could be a 10/10 mod. Have it change the FOV to something normal, give it a chunk of a real map to use as a bg, etc

as of the 64-bit update for TF2 it was moved to a post L4D1 version of VPhysics and the thing about L4D1 and everything after it (such as ASW, L4D2, Portal 2, and CS:GO) is that VPhysics/IVP is compiled with floats instead of doubles which TF2 ended up inheriting

It's fascinating that out of most Source games Team Fortress 2 needs the physics aspect of it the least. So the physics being somewhat more precise barely played a role
