I think I actually did this sorta, with the huntsman
switching to Jarate/an SMG and back negates the long cooldown between Huntsman shots where Sniper has to rack another arrow, I believe
so it did help me fire a bit faster (still couldn't aim the shots for shit tho)

Turns out the limitation is completely artificial and dxlevel 81 works fine with the dxvk that ships with tf2
on linux it would be a massive hassle to get it working though because there are so many checks and stuff that expect no dxlevel 81 on linux
but on windows it's like 1 check preventing you from using dxlevel 81 with dxvk
but yeah the dxvk that comes with tf2 is from before they 'added dx8 support' to it

Playing without chat must be kind of weird. I guess if you're playing on US servers, it's much less weird since people actually talk there in voice chat. But disabling voice chat too?
The most fun I've had playing TF2 was on US servers, where more than half of the players were talking in VC and just having a good time

I've had a better time recently when trying out community servers properly for the first time

I've rarely been able to achieve it but it's insanely satisfying when you start aiming like a fucking sentry outperforming the sweatyass trickstab spies and the human jumping beans known as Scunts (not me tho, I use raw speed and strafing with the BFB)

Out performing trickstab spies isn’t hard, they telegraph so hard.
And jumping bean scouts vs heavies is kinda a bleh strat imo. It makes it hard for the heavy to track, but it also hurts your ability to aim as scout. I do like you without Bfb, just long strafes and change direction when the heavy’s aim catches up.
Makes it a lot easier to 3 or 5 shot the heavy but you also usually walk away with like 75% health. A bit less reliable if the enemy heavy has high ping though

Oh yeh, the strafing technique is tougher with pyro because they ignite you if they touch you at all. I usually just stay away from them and chip them for like 30-60
jumping bean scout is good if you can aim and track well as scout

long strafes and being "ahead" of the heavies aim is also good

true. I just generally prefer making aiming easier when possible. IMO the less possible error you introduce on your side, the better. I've encountered a few heavies that can actually track well enough that jumping bean is better. It does happen though. Both valid techniques depending on situations and preference

The funniest change with the pyro update has been pyro duels
I am not kidding, if you're fighting another pyro as a pyro, circle around them while using your flamethrower
Now that flames require some tracking, a lot of pyros just panic
I have no clue why
I don't know why it works but ever since I discovered that trick I genuinely win most duels
To be fair going around in circles is a pretty good tactic in general to make hitscan classes struggle to hit you

exactly this, I often see sweaty pyros intentionally shake their aim to spread out the flames. It really fucks over scouts close up as you can't line up meatshots that easy

near impossible as a soldier especially if their team is leading by a mile

circle strafing was always good for pyro v pyro
At a certain range pyros just have to rely on knowing rocket fire rate and just predict the soldier holding m1 basically, if you just let go of m1 and fire a rocket reactively after they airblast, it works wonders. You gotta make sure you’re close enough that they’re relying on prediction though, it’s basically playing chicken with a pyro, it’s kinda funny.
Then there’s like the high level pyro v soldier strat where both players are awkwardly waiting for the other to attack, so they just stare intimately into eachothers eyes for like 8 seconds then both just go “screw it” and walk away.
I just fire when it feels right
Somehow that actually just wins me a lot of duels
they may reflect one or two rockets but as long as I'm alive at the end I win eheh
I think it's such a fun matchup
I haven't played any other game where this kind of tension is built
Whether I'm soldier or pyro I'm always looking forward to that kind of duel
you can fake the shoot animation in some scenarios
That's no fun
theres a few ways to do it
one is just moving your mouse up and down
usually most pyros fall for that
the second is you can cancel some animation cycles with right click since it's a cow mangler attack button
the third you can sometimes make the reload animation look like an attack anim if you time it right and cancel it
even experienced pyros will get fucked up by it because they get insecure about predictions
and then they become a mess and they'll be easier to fight
because they really dont know if youre faking or not

this also gets the reload anim working
Chipping away at their health with splash damage is usually really effective
Direct hit pyro duels are fun also
Also a great tactic is to not have shame and have a shotgun equipped
close quarters it can surprise a pyro enough to fit a shot or two
I usually don’t risk going for splash damage. Airblast is so whacky that there’s like an 80% shot they’ll resurrect the rocket from the grave just to rubber band it back your direction
I hate when a med pops kritz on you the moment they see a pyro. It’s like “bro this fight was manageable until you put us into sudden death”

Honestly most the time it’s just the medic. I’m pretty confident in my ability to dodge, but then I’ll get splashed for like 100 and my healer id will disappear and I’ll be like “oopsie”
Or I love when I’m playing 6s, switch to pyro for a last hold, and a soldier sacs for my med and I get to airblast the rocket at them. Because it basically auto aims a really flashy airshot, but none of my teammates know that so they’re all like “HOLY SHOT HES GOATED”.
As if I wasn’t staring 45 degrees away from the soldier the whole time.
What was funny was I was in a Pyro v Pyro with my Shotgun when I airblasted to give myself some space while reloading an unexpectedly reflected a rocket into the other Pyro.

only things that work are models/texture changes, and a select group of sounds

Apart from referencing texture materials from a different location
Back in summer 2023 valve fixed a bug that caused the game to crash all the time when you loaded into a valve server with model mods, and their solution was to just allow the models themselves to load in casual.
The game is supposed to automatically revert the models when you go back into an sv_pure 1 server, so they made some sort of new solution to stop custom models in scream fortress 2023.
It turns out that reloading the material system a few times while in-game just makes it work again anyway because of magic or something (i still dont know how it works). with the casual preloader I was just going by ear and doing tons of trial and error until i discovered that you could keep the models loaded by reloading the material system. Even the new one quickprecache made by goopswagger still uses that material system reload. maybe someone who can read the source code might have an idea but the changes all happened last year which means we don't know how the new system works
otherwise casual-compatible models are just the same as regular models with a different texture directory for sv_pure
iirc some things caused issues, idk if they were removed or not
not the one you can download at github, there is a few people who made compatible versions of it, it just doesn't have particles (which ngl is the main reason why you wanted to download it in the first place.)
particles have always been the pandora's box and the holy grail of TF2 casual compatibility
You could get stuff like What's Left of Ye or other cool particle mods working but you could also pull bullshit like eternal spy smoke and ubered medic "ping" particles

Only time I know LODs made a noticeable difference was when pf2 first added their player models
They used to not have LODs and I and others would get noticeable frame drops and choppiness
I made a mod with some really shitty LODs using the decimate modifier as well as the normal shadowlod and flexes stuff and it ran way smoother

alright me and a friend looked into this and it seems to be the case, the only downside is now the normal maps don't take effect anymore because lightmapped props don't support normal maps

lightmapped props are so limited
they use the same UV map as the prop itself so you can't have any overlapping UVs or else the lightmap can be inaccurate

I tested without any custom playermodels, but I usually also use High Poly Non-HWM Playermodels

I stream this game, it's usually a rig with a rtx 20XX series gpu, I disable lods, MvM with that at its most intense doesn't go below 90 fps, only time I saw a large fps decrease below 60 was megaton before the patch.
and that was with bots wearing nothing

The biggest bottleneck TF2 faces is RAM latency
There's a reason X3D cpus double the frame rate compared to their non X3D counterparts: it's because the extra cache cuts down the number of cache misses
Some benchmarks a friend did for me with their 7950X3D (which has a mix of x3d and non x3d cores)

Ensure your RAM is actually running at its rated spec (my friend's wasn't and you can see in the spreadsheet that it can improve FPS by up to 10%)

ngl I'm interested in running some benches for these lods on my craptop since the gpu on that thing is absolutely anaemic and dropping model detail does have a measurable perf increase. I'd be interested to see the numbers on a bad vs good gpu
My testing wasn't airtight, normally I'd unplug my internet and make sure the minimum programs were running on my pc for testing, but for this "quick" benchmarking I did nothing beyond what was listed.
But there was some improvement. I think in 6v6 you might reach a point where the decreased fps of the MCP offsets the optimization of the LODs, but for 24 player you don't reach that yet. Also not sure what causes the drop in fps for the MCP.
Also testing was done with comfig module lod=high
I've been interested in getting a GPU throttled system built or purchased tbh, been debating getting a raspberry pi just to have a compact linux system to test hud ports on and I assume it'd get absolute dookie fps. Apparently most UI stuff in source runs on GPU so the 0.01% optimizations I've been chasing in my HUD are basically only relevant on the rare GPU bottlenecked TF2.

@tough locust is there a reason you toggle mat_aaquality twice in the Modern Casual Preloader? Is it essential to the preloading or is it to reset mat_aaquality to whatever its prior value was?
If its the latter then iirc mat_aaquality doesn't have any actual effect besides being convenient for forcing reloads, so it should be safe to only toggle it once, speeding up the script. Though I could stand corrected
it's required to reload the matsys twice or else preloading doesnt work

tf2 still very much uses the cpu for computing stuff like layout and setting up the panels in memory
your optimizations make xhud run significantly better than the default
removing panels likely helps a lot with reflowing performance (aka hud elements moving eachother around and how they attach to eachother)
something interesting to consider is that centered text runs significantly worse than non-centered text

So nvidia control panel isnt able to force vsync onto tf2 for some reason. enabling the in game vsync fixes the tearing but it isnt very good

i opened tf2 for a completely unrelated reason, but noticed this and figured i'd follow up on this, you can see the ammo panel has the soft outline and the heads and stickies are super jagged
there's still some jaggedness on the ammo panel but its much less noticeable
i honestly dont notice a difference
most noticeable on the left or right edges of each panel bg
smaller ones are very noticeably pixelated diagonals, ammo panel is still a bit but nowhere near as much

It's much less noticable if you're resampling the image

1- Load game
2- Load demo
3- gototick 2300
4- play the demo for a few seconds
5- disconnect

tf_win64_mastercomfig_low_vulkan should be totally disregarded because it crashes every time so only the last attempt went through into the graph due to a bug on my part.
The rest should be taken with a big grain of salt because performance for the first run after launching the game is not representative of normal gameplay due to caches and buffers and shit. But this is what I cna give you for now

forgor and didn't check to see that most of the tip weapon mods are not for the default weapons
