It's time we share something that we were planning for TF:S2 before we even started working on it.

monday is tomorrow that means bets are back on for the summer update
putting 50 dollars on wednesday. item servers get knocked out twice at approx 4 pm est and update drops at 5:30 est. 9 maps 25 cosmetics, 7 taunt unsual effects and 9 regular effects. no war paints for some reason.
I have a feeling war paints will only be summer from now on (cause it sold really well the 1st case from what I heard, people overall not liking seasonal paints because valve picks the worst ones, and it's easier to not fuck up general themed submission selection over seasonal.)
I can't wait for the summer update on September 20th!

I don't really know how to describe the experience, I started feeling it the worst when helldivers 2 released. I usually love to challenge myself and do max difficulty runs on games like that solo, I did the same with Payday 2 and Payday 3, and Baldur's Gate 3, and all sorts of other games

I for one am an incredibly not grown up adult 
yeah though eventually once you play enough games you run out of new novel experiences. I honestly don't play any video games other than TF2 anymore outside of short bursts. I'll play a 4 hour indie game like once every 6 months and be more than satisfied. TF2 is just a fun busy game to hop on and play every few days bc it's the perfect chill shooter. I haven't had an experience where a game BLEW my mind since I first tried VR or first time. I haven't gotten taken for a loop with a crazy meta-type game since DDLC(?) bc once you have those experiences it's completely diminishing returns. Other shooters just make me want to play TF2, VR games are just chasing the dragon of me playing a shitty VR quake demo in 2015 and absolutely losing my mind, you won't ever have something surpass that initial "wow" factor because its just derivative. Games kinda become a comfort thing once you hit a certain age
focused leisure is an important part of life, theres obviously a happy medium but not everything should be productive

If there's one thing I've seen plenty of in the TF2 community, it's people who have become so obsessed with the game that they forget it is just a game. As dear to my heart as this game is, it should never take over your life. There are much more important things in life deserving of attention.
I also think that TF2 has an internal life cycle, getting burnt out, or otherwise losing interest is part of the cycle. Time away is needed, for however long, maybe a month, maybe years, to eventually one day come back and remember why you enjoyed it in the first place.
Though I seem to be an exception to that rule, since despite maining Spy for over 6000 hours I'm still not burnt out of it.

like it's actually really cool what people have done
I already said it's the fault of the game's design and format, the biggest contributor being team sizes
not as big as the fortnite, etc. scenes but still cool and has an active community (queue times are still shit so people play them during it)
The average skill of the players doesn't matter all that much
6v6, 5v5, etc. leave very little room for error, you can't mess around nearly as much as you can in a 12v12 setting, then factor in things like class/hero/whatever balancing with lots of hard-counters where you're kind of forced to run whatever counters the enemy team instead of just playing what you want
When it's not a team-based thing with small team sizes, it's usually a battle royale where random chance is a huge factor in winning or losing, which I'm not a fan of either because now whether or not I have fun is now at the mercy of RNG
This isn't me refusing to try anything other than TF2, I have, I used to play splatoon 1 and 2 religiously and have played a little bit of CSGO and fortnite, plus several more obscure titles, but none of them hit the same way that TF2 does
anyway back to this
I think splatoon does this uniquely well. there's turf war which is partially a tutorial (forces you to engage with the core mechanic of the game, while being otherwise simple and basic), and also functions as casual mode because you can just run around the map aimlessly and still be helpful to your team in doing so; this is a mode explicitly designed for casual players and it serves that purpose well
and then the other modes (koth, player destruction, etc) are in the competitive queue and are more clearly designed for and marketed towards serious players. there's ranks, there's solo and squad queues, etc. so generally the casual and competitive communities are kept separate
BUT, once every so often, an event happens called splatfest where everyone chooses one of three teams to play for, like back when tf2 had wars. and you get matched with people on your team and against people on another team, and whichever team wins gets points that go into the overall pool. this sounds competitive, yet matches are played in turf war, the casual format. this does two things: one, it encourages casual players to get involved in something with higher stakes, and two, it gives the casual players a bit of an advantage in that they're more used to playing the format. but of course comp players are playing more seriously so it creates an interesting dynamic
splatfest would be cool enough on its own, but what pushes it over the edge for me is a unique mode that can only be played during splatfests. it's like turf war, but it's asymmetrical, with 4 people from the team who won on day 1 having to battle 2 people each from the teams that lost. this is, imo, the most casual format in the entire game, in that it's so cyclical in meta as to not have a meta at all. in creating a format like this, casual players are fully rewarded for completely ignoring any concept of meta and just having fun, while still also encouraging you to take the game seriously if you desire
this is a long message but it's all to say that splatoon is the only game I've played that actually manages to merge its casual and competitive audiences, even if only temporarily, in such a cohesive and interesting way
I liked basically everything about splatoon except for the small teams and ranks

I do not like the 4v4 format at all, I also hate not being able to switch weapons mid-round because often I'd be stuck with something I don't like or are bad with, which led to me only using like 4 different weapons because I didn't want to go through the trial and error of figuring out the others

All of the more interesting modes being locked behind ranks also really sucked, I hated playing with ranks in S1 to the point where I just flat out didn't touch it in S2

splatoon is one of the best shooter games of all time and ive been missing it ever since switching over to PC
yeah splatoon has a really solid core to it
i wish it relied on shooter-type weapons less since the others are way more interesting, but it's one of the most unique shooters i've ever played and i hugely appreciate it
i don't think it quite beats TF2 but if TF2 were to suddenly vanish one day, splatoon would be my next pick

getting over 200 fps mid fight, all good, then I go play medic, activate shield on a tank
fps immediatly drops to 60-80

MvM is a particle shit show I just expect my fps to tank while playing
it's a twofold issue because MvM maps are super open compared to regular TF2 maps so everything is being rendered at once

although it's still decently powerful in pubs
telling where everyone is gives you pretty much unlimited insight into how you want to approach a certain point
there's not much coordinated strategy done in pubs so you wouldn't get much benefit from that perspective but like you can still single out and time your shots perfectly etc

no theres stuff in comfig that wouldnt be good defaults for the game, and there are some bugs in the game
theres also engine stuff that cant be defaulted for the client differently than the server
which would need to be done because theres some stuff that would be ideal for the client but would be bad for the server
mastercomfig makes decisions based on the fact that people explicitly installed a config so we have more leeway in forcing some settings, since people are more aware they are customizing the game
as well as that its a client only config
the defaults are better than the game defaults anyways so they should be the game defaults

"fov" isn't one specific metric but actually could refer to multiple different things. TF2's 90 fov isn't wrong to say it's 90 fov, but if you're asking about horizontal fov then no 90 fov isn't 90 horizontal fov and aspect ratio will affect that

I'd speculate the reasons for low fov defaults as a convention are:
- it makes more sense on consoles with more distant displays
- it looks better in screenshots and promotional materials
- that's just the convention and there isn't much reason to go against the grain, it's just a default setting after all
tf2's default settings suck, it doesn't even set r_lod 0 for the highest quality models at all distances and mat_mipmaptextures 0 for the game to look worse and run worse

only argument i've seen for not increasing TF2's FOV past 90 is so that spies get more of a sparring chance, if you could bup up the FOV to like 130 then spies would be extra fucked on top of already being the weakest class
on top of everyone being noobs the reason that spy was better in the old days was because everyone was using 4:3 or 5:4 monitors, makes it 1 percent less likely that you'll see a spy sneaking up
i think the real reason is that people were noobs
16 degrees is not gonna make or break a class that ideally should be behind you entirely

Okay I WILL disclose one part of the workshop exploit which wasn't discovered by anyone, which has been fixed by Valve probably from my report
When you close that workshop menu, it restores sv_cheats to the value that it was set to prior to it being opened
You could have set sv_cheats 1 on the main menu, kept the workshop menu open while you connect to a server
And then closed it while in game, and it would "reset" the value back to sv_cheats 1
Since sv_cheats is reset when connecting to a server
The fix was to just skip the whole sv_cheats process if sv_cheats was already enabled, it didn't make sense to set and restore sv_cheats 1 if it was already 1

People were needing to set keybinds for sv_cheats exploits because the console didn't work very well while the workshop menu was opened
Since everyone thought you needed to have the workshop menu open for sv_cheats to be on
but this version of the exploit worked around that issue

every time i join an apple jack map it seems like theres like 3-4 engies on each side
how defensible is the intel for a ctf map
is this, like, 2fort intel levels of defensible
or is it a bit more open
its a little cramped, but the intel is surrounded by 2 different flank routes
and its really easy to get to the flank
theres usually a sentry on both red circles (occasionally the bottom sentry moves to yellow circle)

I think the best strat on last is to build a tele that takes your team to C and attack from there, gives you high ground that red struggles to contest
