makes sense to me at least cause flames used to have a max range of ~250 hu and now it's ~340
because it's random it can last anywhere between 0.5 and 0.7 seconds in the air

I know at least one person reported doubling their frames with that weird trick, but they were only getting 15fps before that.
That's got a few bad ones in it.

no, this simplification you mention is only accurate for my specific setup on that load. The results would be specially different for medium-low vs low if there was water, or if there were more players on screen.

in simple terms: there is a 96% chance of variance on medium being higher or equal to the one from medium-high given this exact result
but the outliers in medium make me think the more likely explanation is something interfering with the results
