#The Withering Mind

trying out this one now
the way the ||layout changes when you go back down the stairs|| is pretty cool
got stuck after getting ||the bow, feather, hammer, and bombs||, and finding the ||heart container under the robe/mask and entrance to the boss room||
||ah i see the eye now!||
really fun mod π doesn't seem like the creator is in here but here's my review anyway
||https://github.com/Dragorn421/DragoStuff/blob/hm2023_competition/reviews/The Withering Mind.md||
Hey, sorry! Had irl stuff to do. Didn't see that these were up yet. Don't have a ton of time to jump on discord, but I've got notifications on now, so I can respond as soon as I can. Thanks for playing! And I appreciate the review Dragorn! I'll take a look at it now! π
Oh I forgot to ask ||is the final boss enemy your own or from the HM pack or?||
HM pack. I'm WAY too much of a beginner to know how to make that, lol. π
Also, I read the review, thanks a bunch! I fully agree with your assessment, not harsh in the slightest!
In fact, let me elaborate on my thought process for those who are curious...
I wanted to make sure that the layout and puzzles worked well, so those were definitely my priorities. I worked on that first. I actually didn't have a story in mind when I started! Initially, I was just following tutorials, and using some of my prior knowledge to figure out what I even could do. After messing around for awhile, I pretty quickly came up with the idea of escaping a mansion.
But I started to ask, "why are we escaping? And who's mansion is this?"
...And after starting to brainstorm some of the hints, and while experimenting with the HM actor pack, I realized how much fun ||the Wizrobe would be to fight as a boss! That gave me the idea that he was the mansion's owner all along, and the Wizrobe was just a costume that made him go crazy when he wore it! He actually has a Navi description that implies he was the one leaving the notes. (Yes, Wizrobes aren't actually costumes in Zelda lore, and it's a bit cheesy, but I wanted to give the player a bit of mystery to solve, so I feel like it worked out, haha.)||
And finally, I had left the detail work for last. I was able to make some stuff look nice towards the end, (you should've seen it a week before, haha!) but ran out of time to get it up to exactly what I wanted. A few rooms were pretty barren; I wanted to flesh those out, and maybe add another puzzle, but I wasn't able to before the due date. Been too busy with stuff irl.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with it though! π
Man, this one was super cool!! I really enjoyed it!! Loved neat little details like ||the heart behind the lady being quite literally|| or ||the owners robes hinting at the boss being a wizrobe||. The || double door staircase trick was also amazing, I'm sadly a defensive gamer so I kind of noticed that I got pushed back when I fought the slime and tried walking backwards. If I just rushed into the room, I would have had NO IDEA that the entrance wasn't the same entrance. I would LOVE to see some people react to that.||
Thanks for creating this!!
one question though:
||Is there any point to the empty room across from the room with the owners robes? I thought I might need hookshot for it, but never found a hookshot in the game. Almost feels like I "wasted" my key and didn't get anything||
yes there is
huh. Wanna tell me what it is? I finished the hack otherwise
||did you find the four chests in the library||
||think I got only 2 chests in the library||
||there is another bonus item you can get||, do I just spoil everything
go ahead, I don't think I'll be experimenting again :)
gotta get to the other hacks at some point too :D
||you can get lens of truth in the library, and there's a note saying there are 7 hidden chests throughout the map. they contain piece of hearts||
||ohhh so that's how you're supposed to find the extra hearts! I just randomly stumbled upon them a few times and didn't think too much of it except "yay, extra heart!" :D ||
wait, ||how did you make that triple jump with rocs feather??||
||just press rocs feather twice
(it's limited to 2)||
||oh god I should really read more. I just saw the feather and went "Neat, I know what that does" ||

||I don't think it explains it, I just kinda discovered it randomly lol||
Request for future hacks: ||Make Rocs feather have a different color if you give it more extra jumps than 1. Or idk, make the text not skippable so an Idiot like me won't press it away xDD||
Awesome!! Thank you so much for playing it! I'm glad you enjoyed it!! It was so fun making it, and it's been amazing seeing people's reactions!! π
Good suggestion for the ||feather||! To be honest, I was so focused on making everything else, that I never even considered that! If we're able to do update patches, I'll probably do that very thing! π
Thank you everyone for playing it! I'm glad you're all enjoying it!
...There is actually one final, "bonus secret" that I put in. It's an inside joke/troll-ish secret between my friends and I. It's actually from my Mario64 hack I made awhile ago! I imported the model into OoT, and it worked! I thought of a hint for it during the stream...so here's the final hint:
||"Take a leap of faith where the light enters"||
Enjoy! π
Just finished. Great hack. I liked how || the looping level design worked. It made each room flow really nice with the others. || I also found || all the secret Heart Containers! ||
Thank you!
And congratulations! Glad to hear it! π
||...And also, are you sure you found all of them? You can get a total of 11 hearts. One is a bonus secret with no hints. However I gave a hint to it right here π
If you manage to find the final heart piece, respond by saying something "he" would say, haha. (You'll know what I mean if you find it!) π||
Oh no! || I only found the 7 mentioned in the note! I'll explore some more when I have time! ||
There were a few bugs/oversights I saw during stream...So I went ahead and fixed a few things and made a new .bps patch. I'll upload it here in the meantime, and see if I can get it put up on the website for future players. π
I was gonna go back and look for || the secret heart container || but the game loaded me at the Temple of Time
Not sure if this is fixed in the current patch
That's actually the main thing I fixed, haha. Sorry I didn't discover it earlier!! π π
Oh well. I think what I will do is just replay the whole hack after I have finished the other entries
Awesome! Just means that now, when you go back through, you get to implement speedrun strats, haha! π
oh I did find that but I thought it was just "saving isn't intended" π
I mean that IS true...depends on how you look at it, haha. π
Very well made for a first rom hack! Congrats!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!! π
||Spoiler: I liked this one quite a lot! The minimal environments were set up so they were nicely unsettling, in a Liminal Spaces sort of way. The whole thing actually reminded me of classic RPG Maker games like Ib or Heta Oni, graphically. I also thought the puzzles were pretty clever. The only one that gave me trouble was finding the bomb bag, but that likely was me having a hard time corrollating the top-down map to the room when I was in it. I'm also a sucker for creepy games with scattered clues, so I did like that!||
||Spoiler: Also, this really hammered in for me how creepy the door that closes automatically when you go near it is. I don't know if this is intentional or not, but if you stay just far away and edge around just so, it actually lets you peek into the next room over, so you can see some of the Wizzrobe outfit on the wall. That actually makes for some interesting foreshadowing!||
||I'm stuck, I think I've found everything except the boss key. Even found the Waluigi room lol. Could someone who's completed this give me a hint?||
||If you look into the first room it will look back||
||you should have found a hint you didn't use yet too (or didn't find the hint)||
Thank you for your review!! You're right on with all of that!!
||I envisioned it as encompassing liminal spaces, with a tinge of RPG Maker mystery. That's literally word-for-word exactly what I had in mind for the theming, so I'm glad that that came through, haha! π
For personal reasons, I'm not a fan of horror, but I do like a bit of mystery. Almost like a low-key psychological horror. Like when a game gives you a slight feeling of unease, but not quite explicit, if that makes sense? Just a little bit of mystery to make you wonder, without actually spelling it out for you, ya know?
And yeah, you're right about the auto-closing door! Although I hadn't originally intended it, the way it allowed you to see into the other room, but not quite enough to figure out what was there was just too perfect! Because of the previous notes, and the out of place paintings, most players so far have felt a little uneasy by the time they got there, and the ones who looked through the door were wondering, "what IS THAT???" And their imagination tried to fill it in, making you wonder the whole time, plus it sticks in your mind to head back there later. π||
||Thanks for the hint! I don't think i would have found that on my own, despite getting the hint.
I really loved this hack. The riddles were really fun to figure out, without being overly obtuse for me except the last one (even though I was running around in circles for a few of them). I loved the creepy vibe, this hack pulled off tone and atmosphere extremely well. Really loved this hack!||
Well done you, seems like you get good money!π°
Congratulations!!
Thank you!!! πππ
just played this one now, as I didnt had much time to play all of them, and got curious to try the winner!
it rly gave me the sense of wanting to escape the mansion! the empty big rooms were unsettling at times, specially the library, which is what u were going for I suppose
I didnt got stuck in any part || I sadly ruined the woman heart part by looking behind the wall with Z, was shoting arrows at the paintings and thinking, there must be something here, and thats when I looked behind the wall ||
my main criticism is not using vertex colors in an interior map (been saying this since 2017!)
pretty good overall!
Thanks for playing it!! And thank you for the review!
||And hey, you saw that part early, but I figure that's a reward for being observant, haha!||
Glad you enjoyed it! π

Hit me right in the Liminality and creepypasta vibes. As an Analog horror lover, this one hits so good And congratulations on the win!!!
I'm glad that everyone has been enjoying it so far! The response has been a HUGE encouragement!! Thank you everyone for your kind words! A few people have been asking questions about my design process for it, so I wrote down my design process in a document, for anyone who is curious. It was too much to write it all on Discord.
...Also, if it's alright, as a bonus, I can go ahead and put a link to my SM64 hack (as a .bps patch) I was working on a while ago! Don't expect quality, I was mostly just messing around with it with friends, but you can already see from this one that I like puzzles. It has a couple puzzles in it. If anyone bothers to try it, let me know if you get all 5 stars! I'll give you a hint if you need it. It patches over a standard SM64 (USA).z64 rom (MD5: 20B854B239203BAF6C961B850A4A51A2)
King
how do you download this mod lol
tried patching 1.0 with the bps and it keeps crashing in p64
@uncut lynx
Make sure that the ROM is a .z64 USA rom. If it's not loading up, it could be an emulator problem.
yeah the rom checks out
maybe an old version of p64
nope its the new one
maybe ill try a different rom
Could try a different plugin
wdym
Simple64 works the best when I tried it. Just set the upscale to 3 or 4, (unless you want the old school, low quality graphics.) π
Personally, I couldn't get pj64 to work with it. I've always had trouble with the plugin system, haha...π
lmao just downloaded simple64 and it worked 1st try
thank god, i was racking my brain lol
Yeah, Simple 64 tends to work with a lot of hacks.
A quick review!
No wonder this hack made first place! It's basically what you could as for as an Escape Room. ||A big mansion, with weird lore and secrets that remind me of Resident Evil 1 and 4, the liminal spaces and the... WALUIGI ROOM||
Also, I wanna ask: ||How many Heart Containers were there? Because I remember reading that there were 7 hidden chests, but I finished with 11 hearts? Was one of them not hidden? (I actually don't remember)||
I really really liked this hack btw, if it isn't clear!
Awesome!! Thank you for the review! I'm glad you liked it! ||There are 7 hidden chests in the mansion, and a secret extra heart in the Waluigi Cave! There are no hints to the Waluigi Cave, so that's just a bonus. That means you got everything! You're right, there are 11 hearts total because of the Waluigi Cave.||
Big request for a sequel, and this guy in the Red(Wizzrobe), and his haunting laugh must be in it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pe1qH9dWNrs

I enjoyed this hack, I thought it used the items well enough and the puzzles were well designed, the maps were a little too spacious, too many invisible walls, but overall it was a fun experience, with all the hearts tho I wished it had more enemies
Fierce Chaddy
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
good hack, found all the secrets though there was only really 1 well hidden one.
for a custom boss it was neat but I felt it was a bit too easy.
A way to style on the boss
Why is the fire looking so weird?
I loved this. Was amazing throughout. 8/10 before last 2 rooms, then 9+/10 upon entering those rooms, that really shocked! π
First time entering the ||library|| was a BIG shock!
Very satisfying ending as well. First time I get to experience the new-old item (which I think is from indigo?), that was/is amazing. The mechanics and feeling of using it is just soooo satisfying. It has to break alot of puzzles when designing levels, though! π
I'm a sucker for this kind of horror and puzzle design, like the metal crates (revisit and explore same creepy rooms upon acquiring new items, expecting to get jumped upon revisiting). So this hack might be the competition winner for me in my book even though some other hacks are technically better and more satisfying/adventurous. The overall design and concept is on par with the others while the horror adds so much, that's what seals the deal for me. Incorporated the horror with the escape theme was a brilliant choice for the atmosphere and immersion/excitement. Well made ||Boss|| and ending big bonus. For a "first major hack" I'm incredibly impressed and I wish to see you make alot more zelda64 mods!
That's awesome!! Thank you so much!!! That means a lot!! I have more projects I'm working on, and more things planned. I have a YouTube account for romhacks now, and a Patreon that I'm working on. Keep your eyes open for any updates on those! And again, thank you SO much!!! πππ
hey, I've recently edited a video of my february playthrough of the hack, just forgot to post it here.
It's in Brazilian Portuguese though...
It's a shame I couldn't think of a better thumbnail/title combo, since the video didn't do well compared to the others
but the fault is totally mine for not being creative enough lol
Finally got around to playing this!! This is absolutely incredible, ||the part where the layout changes where you turn around freaked me out! Same thing with the Wizrobe behind the door that opens and closes.|| I also liked the puzzles in this one, they were very satisfying. I was shocked when the credits said this was your first rom hack lol.
Impressive stuff! Canβt wait to see more! C:
Thanks so much for your kind words!! I'm glad you enjoyed it!! π
With this mod, I pretty much squeezed every bit of what my current modding knowledge allows into it, (and in fact I learned a substantial amount during it!)
...I have many more ideas I would like to put into practice for the future, however I need to learn more as I go to see what I'm actually able to implement in reality...
My goal is to keep working on more and more mods, and even if some are better (or worse) than the ones before it, I hope to learn and implement at least one new thing each time!
Unfortunately my real life keeps me pretty short on time, but I'm hoping that will ease up in the future. Either way, thanks again for the kind words, and I'm definitely hoping I'll be able to put some of my other ideas into this next competition!! π
If you ever update this wonderful mod, could this sound be added to ||The Master||?
I would love to do that! Make it more accurate to WW! If I ever figure out how to, that is, haha. π
