I'm very tired atm so I can't use my brain power for this but this is really fun and really cute so far

#

will finish it later today or something

#

Was really cool!! Unfortunately on hardware I get a crash when resetting the room with L+R. it's a consistant crash, would you like a crash debugger screenshot @waxen fern ?

#

Will try again on emulator so i can properly play it lol

placid hearth
#

I finished it, I thought it was really great. It was super unique and creative, and you could clearly see the planning effort that went into arranging the puzzles. Had me constantly thinking and figuring out the solutions and it was really satisfying everytime you figured out what to do next. Didn't feel overly cryptic either as long as you were determined. Lots of charm down to the little visual details ||like the "party member icons" which were fun and adorable.|| Really good technical showcase, I imagine this took a lot of work to get functioning. ||I always hear people talk about controlling monsters and other entities as custom functionality but I've never really experienced or have seen it in a hack before. Until now and this was quite elaborate with it.|| Would be awesome to see this idea really polished and elaborated on, it'd be great. It had a ton of unique identity to it and was really good I think. ๐Ÿฅ‡ ๐Ÿ† oh_yeah

waxen fern
#

@placid hearthglad to hear u enjoyed it so much! and surprised that u completed it

#

made it as hard as I could

placid hearth
#

lol me and rank were laughing, it was definitely a challenge but totally doable with determination. Used savestates of course but I don't see that as a downside or anything because the concept was so different and original that it overshadows that completely imo

waxen fern
#

will DM u the ending cutscene since it seems its still bugged, prolly both the intro and ending set the same permanent flag so it fails to play

placid hearth
#

yeah I'd love to see it

waxen fern
#

if anyone else completes it let me know and I show the ending cutscene in DM!

acoustic scroll
#

im starting this up right now on stream on and everdrive

waxen fern
acoustic scroll
#

damn i cant play it at all?

waxen fern
#

if you want to play it on everdrive let me try to fix it first

#

play the others till I issue an update

acoustic scroll
#

okay sure will do

waxen fern
#

hmmm even on cen64 it doesnt crash, and I cant test it on real hardware

#

sucks, wonder why it happens

waxen fern
#

couldnt fix hardware cuz no way to debug it

#

this version fixes the ending cutscene which is bugged and doesnt play

The planning that had to go into this is mind numbing, seriously the most elaborate and planned out puzzles I think I may have ever seen, in any puzzle platformer game, lol. I think the controls/camera could use a little more polish as I really struggled with that, maybe it was just me on my emulator though, not sure. but really well done, you should be super proud this was awesome!

keen inlet
#

Actually crazy how good the puzzles are in such a short period of time

waxen fern
#

thanks! glad u liked it

#

had to rush it in 10 days so had no time to polish the controls sadly, I suggest holding up the stick and slightly tilting left or right to turn, I managed to beat it with keyboard during my tests so its not needed but makes it a bit better

ebon ginkgo
#

10 days to make this romhack monkaS
The mechanics are really fun and unique!

pine atlas
#

10 days before the due date no less.

waxen fern
#

nice, hiisuya managed to beat it too!

waxen fern
#

@dapper marsh I use pj64 myself, 4.0

#

make sure you have this setting

dapper marsh
#

Yup just did that and it's working so far

dapper marsh
#

The way the camera works makes it reeeaaally difficult to control anyone

waxen fern
#

yeah I messed up rly bad with that...

viscid jolt
#

The whole idea and the puzzles are absolutely fantastic, I'm really amazed that it was made in such a short time ๐Ÿช„betalove

#

My brain almost exploded but I made it. Insanely cool concept and SUPER well thought out puzzles!

waxen fern
#

glad you liked it!

wise basalt
#

This was really challenging! Phenomenal concept and creativity! The camera almost made me vomit!

waxen fern
#

gz for making through it!

kind ocean
#

How exactly were you able to do this in just 10 days?

waxen fern
#

couldnt brainstorm something that was unique enough and 10 days before deadline I suddenly envisioned the idea and the entire dungeon layout (had to scrap || the dark link fight, I was going to make so u capture a stalfos and fight against dark link as he has been contaminated by Link's courage and doesnt respond to ganon's orders, no time so just slaped him in there and ganon doesnt react at all ||)

kind ocean
#

With the map-making taking probably a day or two, that only left just over a week to program all of this stuff.

#

And part of it involves figuring out what to even do.

#

Let alone figuring out HOW to get stuff like that working.

waxen fern
#

@kind ocean I took a bunch of shortcuts to go faster

wise basalt
#

Like the camera monkaS

kind ocean
#

I'm assuming the ||Ganon flame|| is ||Spaceworld Navi||.

waxen fern
#

|| ganon's soul doesnt replace the player actor, it just spawns alongside Link, then Link instance is disabled and keeps being warped at ganon's soul position ||

wise basalt
#

The camera made me so dizzy dissolving_despair

kind ocean
#

We know the camera was an issue.

waxen fern
#

wut no, coded it from scratch minus the effect which is based on a Poe ofc

kind ocean
#

I see.

wise basalt
#

||What is "Spaceworld Navi?" Is that like back when it had the Zelda II Fairy Spell?||

kind ocean
#

Dude...||spoiler||.

kind ocean
#

And for the giant room, I'm assuming you laid out the master puzzle piece by piece?

waxen fern
#

|| for the camera I atleast managed to detect walls, it didnt at first and was unplayable, with more time I would had made it better, oh and something that took me hours is being able to open doors while controlling enemies, so many crashes... ||

kind ocean
#

I can imagine.

#

What made you come up with some of the ideas in the first place?

waxen fern
#

so many questions, u rly got curious all of a sudden lol

kind ocean
#

Well hey, you made something interesting.

waxen fern
#

but yeah my style to make puzzles is thinking about a main one, then add subpuzzles to build up the setup of the main one

kind ocean
#

๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ“ˆ

wise basalt
waxen fern
kind ocean
#

What made you come up with the ||custom game mechanics||?
They aren't like any of the other entries.

waxen fern
#

as I said in the competition channel, wanted to do something that I cant do in my main romhack

#

the ideas I used here cant be used for DunGen

#

its mostly for fun and to experiment

kind ocean
#

I mean, I'm not complaining...

waxen fern
#

maybe I continue it some day... || Link as final boss? ||

kind ocean
#

In any case, your entry was by far the most unique.

#

Well, I don't know...
Pumkin Tower was really unique too.

#

Oh well. Your hack gets praise from me.

waxen fern
#

I didnt played all yet, but some feel more polished than mine

kind ocean
#

Well, they spent longer than just 10 days.

waxen fern
#

but thanks ๐Ÿ‘

kind ocean
#

One tiny negative though.
With really loooong puzzles like the one in here, it's important to add in some optional shortcutting for the player.
I noticed while watching a playthrough how save stating was practically required.
One wrong move, and the player must start the ENTIRE giant puzzle over.

waxen fern
#

yes I realized that too, and its kind of unbalanced that || dark link can keep failing the parkour and come back, while the deku fails it once and its a reset ||

kind ocean
#

Fraid so.

waxen fern
#

|| u struggled a lot with the spider in 2nd room! the correct way was to stop a red platform that moves straight below it, the platform is triggered by the crystal switch ||

#

This one was awesome. Probably the hardest puzzle in the competition but you never run out of things to try. My only problems were the janky camera and also how all the ||playable monsters move around so slowly||. I was starting to feel almost motion sick while playing. Was this hack meant to be played with mouse and keyboard? Because that's what the controls felt like.

waxen fern

#

I'd love to see it expanded into a full size hack, because the puzzles were great and thee whole gimmick is really fun.

BTW I really don't know what the uses of the Redeads/Gibdos and Floormasters would be, I just love em, lol.

Genius!

#

Iron Knuckle could break the pillars and chairs made of brick.

#

Or new breakable Iron Knuckle Axe sensative stuff.

#

Maybe Ganon could be playable too, and he could use his Greatswords to break stuff.

#

Would all 3 of Iron Knuckle's moves be possible? The downward axe slam, the double side axe swipe, and the 180 axe spin?

#

I have the motivation and will to turn it into a proper romhack, but not the time, so cant promise it, for now I will focus on finishing my other romhack Dungeon Generator, then I will decide

Ight! I think I have your DunGen btw.

My review of this hack:
||The intro to this got my mind blown immediately. The aesthetics, the music and PLAYING AS THE FRICKIN' MONSTERS WITH UNIQUE MOVES? THAT'S INSANE! While other hacks also blew me away with their fancy tech, this is the one that got me thinking about how far romhacks have come.

However... I have one big complaint: The camera. I've read this thread to see if it was a problem for anyone else, and while other people mentioned it, it doesn't seem it bothered them as much as it did me. At times it made me dizzy, and at other times it made platforming almost impossible. The fact that the camera always faces forward, makes so that if you try moving back, the camera continuously spins around. For the platforming, it meant that if I was at the edge of a platform, I couldn't just move back a little bit to get momentum to jump, cause the camera would go crazy. Add that to the puzzles in the second room (the huge one with Dark Link and the Deku Scrub) which where very strict-timing based, the fact that the room itself was huuuge, so going back and forth with (mostly) slow characters was a pain... Yeah, I didn't have a good time.

It gave me a big headache, which was enough to make me give up on the hack... which is a shame because the whole concept and tech behind it is so great. I just wish the camera worked differently. If you somehow figured out a better solution for the camera controls, it would immediately bump this one to my top favorites of this comp.||

waxen fern
#

sad to hear u got so frustrated due it, will make sure to fix it fast so nobody else suffers from it

queen palm
#

Though I've complained a bunch about the camera, I want to make it clear that it's just one thing that did that, everything else is incredible. From the visuals, sounds, ||the controlling of enemies||, etc.

#

I really look forward to replaying it with the new patch!

waxen fern
#

thanks, the patch will be ready soon

waxen fern
#
  • Greatly improved the camera, it waits a bit before turning, and turns slowly, holding Z makes it pan faster
  • Changed some platforms so they stay 1 second at the end of their path before moving back
  • Added a few more switch cutscenes to know whats going on when pressing some switches
  • The central platform of room 3 is 2.5 times faster
  • Changed the puzzle of one section of room 3, the old one required savestates and perfect execution, the new one requires brain
  • An icon to press A appears when near a flower (half the people I watched missed this despite explaining it in a textbox)
queen palm
#

those are some nice lookin' patch notes, might play it soon!

queen palm
#

Just finished playing it!

queen palm
#

So here's my updated review:
||The camera works soooo much better now, platforming became much more manageable! Controlling the monsters feels way more seamless overall because of that change.

I'm not sure what puzzle was changed in the new patch, but most puzzles overall felt like putting pieces together, which is exactly what I expect from an Escape Room hack!

Overall I didn't mind having to reset the room after failing. The Dodongo room is a pretty short puzzle, so it's fine. The Dark Link room is a bit on the longer side, and there are multiple ways to force a reset, but despite that, I still think its fine. It's a matter of difficulty, and it's not like the hack is super long anyways.

BUT there is one specific section that I felt was impossible without savestates: the part where you have to ride a green platform as Deku and shoot 3 eye switches to open the way. It's a pretty small window to shoot all 3, and it isn't easy to aim. Not only that, but he has a slight delay between each shot, which makes that part reeeeally hard. And you fail... its GGs.||

My final thoughts is that it's a great romhack. I love the concept of ||being Ganon and taking control of enemies,|| I love the music, I love the visual aesthetic. Many people in my chat also loved the concept of this hack!
I've also heard that you made this hack in only 2 weeks, which is insane!

I'm looking forward to more hacks from you! I can't wait to see what you come up with with more time on your hands.

waxen fern
#

@queen palm || yep thats the part I changed that now requires brain, the platform with the 3 eyes, you're supposed to stop the platform in the middle of the path so u have unlimited time to aim at them ||

#

glad you liked it!

#

and good to hear that the camera feels good now

queen palm
#

it requires something I don't have! HAHAHAHAHAHAH

wise basalt
#

Thank you for fixing the camera oh_yeah

queen palm
#

I probably did a lot of things the hard way instead of figuring out the solution, but oh well

#

then, even that one nitpick I had was my fault in the end

river crow
#

It has to be something obvious that I'm overlooking, but I can't quite finish despite being so close. Guess I'll sleep on it. The issue: ||I know I need Dark Link and the Scrub up by the door to move the platforms for the Bubble. I know I need to sacrifice an Armos to break the rocks and let the Bubble pass. How can I sacrifice an Armos but keep the platform moving so that whoever kills the Armos can return to the top?|| Too tired to stay awake right now though.

waxen fern
river crow
#

How the hell did I manage to miss that?

river crow
#

Good lord. Somebody shoot me. ||I got back up to where the statue is, moved the living one off, and pushed the other one all the way to the switch. Only to find that the switch apparently has a miniscule lip around it that is the same color as the rest of the floor. So I can't seem to push the statue onto it.||

#

Regardless, I know what to do and that I could do it. This was cool as hell. The entire concept was great, and the puzzles were a level of challenging that Nintendo would definitely be too afraid to put in an official game. I played the newest version, so the camera annoyed me maybe once or twice at most. Great stuff.

this seems to crash on console when trying to reset a room. TLB exception on store PC: 800d66f4. if you need more of the debug info I can take pictures later too

waxen fern
#

it is not hardware compatible due the reset crash bug, no intentions to fix it as I can't reproduce the crash on any emulator, and also decided that 1.3 is the last patch anyways

Mindblown by this. I think I've never seen anything like it before on any console, ever. I'll have to look around for spoilers since I'm stuck in the 2nd room for 30min+ ๐Ÿ’€. I think I must get magic to my head somehow.
It's like trying to solve rubiks cube without knowing any algorithms upfront! ๐Ÿ˜‚
E: That was so satisfying! room 3 baby! ๐Ÿ˜„
||But am I supposed to sacrifice the stalchild in here? no, that's too ruthless! how dare you!|| ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Man this is SO much fun!! ๐Ÿ˜„ doing the ||scrub auto-nut, DL jumping moving platforms|| now and it gives me such a kick. This is not what I expected from the title of the hack!
Feels like a funhouse at a theme park! ๐Ÿ˜„
Though, it's with great pain ||I had to leave my comrade behind, just as I had grown fond of him!|| angryjoy

E: The 3x Goldeneye spinning sniper contest is crazy hard with keyboard though! ๐Ÿ˜‚
I wish it would be possible to hit 1-2 of them then drop down to floor below and still being able to get up again with the elevator on the other side of the room.
Just got it after 1h and save state abuse!
E2: Now I got it, haha. The rocks was tricky too. As well as the last bounce. I feel like save state is a must for this. It was very hard but certainly achievable! ๐Ÿ˜„

waxen fern
#

|| you're supposed to stop the platform by hitting the switch again with dark link so u have infinite time to hit the 3 eyes ||

Oh that explains it, LOL! ๐Ÿ’€
||I think I tried a bunch of switches to stop it but none worked so I was like "oh, well..", I must've missed the one which could stop it||.

Hi all, I just got around to playing these escape room puzzles. In Ganon's Res. I crash when first trying to switch from the flame to stalchild. Anyone else experience this? On P64 btw.
