Home depot has a 6'x39"x1.5" solid birch butcher block that's had the plastic wrapping torn off. I know for a fact it's been left standing like that for at least 2 weeks now. They marked it down $50 to 259 from 309. I've heard tearing the seal without installing or sealing/finishing could be bad for it and warp the wood. Even more so recently because it's been raining then hot and dry in socal recently even if it is stored inside.

Would it be worth getting to use as a desk top or what are the chances the wood is likely to warp/Crack soon?

If it's not scratched, it's fine. That's why they wrap it in plastic.

You really don't want to wrap wood in plastic because when you remove it, the wood adjusts rapidly to a new environment. Finish doesn't stop that from happening.

Whether it will warp much or crack depends a lot on how dry the wood was when they wrapped it.
