It's a 150 page paper on compression, you just have to scroll down 👍🏻

"no one cares" is definitely not the type of discussion i'm looking to have, but a scientifically sound one where both parties learn something new, so i'm withdrawing from this conversation. It wasn't my intention to be pedantic but to have an in-depth conversation about a topic that shows similarly in-depth knowledge within a field i am very passionate about.
So while "i'm not really interested in the specifics, i just like the way it sounds" is totally valid, that doesn't mean that "1176 on all in = 50:1 ratio" is correct, though, as it seems you're not interested in scientific accuracy, i'll let that pass

Also: "laymen's"

tender oak
#

No one's looking to have a spergout "uhm actually" conversation with you

halcyon holly
#

That's okay and totally valid, but audio engineering is an engineering subject, and therefore it's good to know the in-depth mechanics of the tools we use

#

But I do totally get why it can feel pedantic to go there in a subject that is, predominantly, creative

#

However, to speak on subjects as convoluted as the circuitry of the 1176, it's good to first do research into it as it avoids misconceptions

tender oak
#

You just randomly highlighted an old comment to correct something that didn't need correcting to show how smart you are. No one's likes that, dude.

#

Approach it differently. I agreed with your fun fact and you turned it into a ted talk

halcyon holly
#

No, not really, you tagged me in something and i didn't have the time to respond until now, so i responded now. I don't see why time is an important factor of the equation here.

halcyon holly
#

As long as the misconception has been corrected, i'm happy

tender oak
#

Dear Lord you exist.

halcyon holly
#

Personal insults really aren't my style, though

#

I really really feel like the guitars could come up here and the drums could be brightened as a bus move

#

I suppose overall you're a bit on the scooped side, though it's working to some extent

#

Maybe a wide band mid boost might help here a bit

tender oak
#

Exactly how I felt

vale vapor
#

You can be wrong without getting angry about it

#

One thing I've learned, don't argue with Ross on compression

tender oak
#

There was nothing wrong at all. It was a broad terms explanation on what the plugin does in this specific use case. Purposefully not being detailed. Basic broad strokes using terms understandable to everyone in their bedroom, relayed directly from people who worked on and use the plugin. In a basic sense, it's an extremely high ratio button. Of course it does more than that, of course it's dynamic and not a fixed ratio, no it's not directly 50:1 nor is that ever mentioned in the manual which is why I said "virtually" to begin with, but I'm not explaining the inner workings of the plugin, I'm explaining in a basic sense what you're using it for in parallel compression. Then randomly days later I'm getting tagged and demanded links and sources over a basic explanation of how the 76 can be used in parallel compression even after I agreed with him. Like calm down there bud, it went from "fun fact" to a reddit thread lecture to flex "I know more than you." Genuinely unnecessary.

vale vapor
#

From a third party perspective i really think you're reading way too far into it

#

None of it was personal attacks

#

Like this entire discussion could've been avoided with an "Oh alright"

#

Just my thoughts tho

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

tender oak
#

It could have been avoided if dude approached it like a conversation and not a lecture demanding sources on a laymens explanation.

#

Just reeks of brain flexing for no other reason than to look intelligent in a thread. Especially when someone agrees with your initial "correction."

vale vapor
#

Its discord

#

Choose the path of least resistance

tender oak
#

That's how reddit happens.

#

(joke)

vale vapor
#

?

#

I don't get it lol

halcyon holly
#

I get that some people aren't looking for in depth conversations about these things lol, but that's all that needs to be said

tender oak
#

Just maybe next time don't start demanding sources and linking your white paper when someone is explaining that they're just using laymen's terms and being broad. You're 100% right, that is not a traditional ratio button, but It comes off as aggressive and dickish when you start off that way, especially when we were agreeing at the core, just not how I broadly explained it which I probably could have been more precise on.

#

You're clearly very knowledgeable and that I admire and appreciate.

#

I like it on big rooms

tender oak
#

Ye, its super punchy and up front on screamed vocals too

#

Love it for that. It just feels so present,

#

I'll run that into rvox which is like a vocal cheat code and then I really like the way an opto compressor tickles the sound if used lightly after. All staged so im not over compressing in any one tool. I use rcompressors opto mode at the end but I really want a good la2a emulation. Was also looking at JST Howard Benson Vocals lately as its on sale and does a lot of neat shit in one place but im not sure its worth it considering the tools I already have.

Any tips?

#

I’ve never done thall before

kind trail
#

He's basically Thall Jesus

#

Generally tho, your Kick and Snare need to way louder than everything else (don't clip anything yet tho)

#

This involves either bumping up the kick and snare, or more importantly, keeping everything else down

#

Then use a dedicated Clipper at the end of your mastering chain

#

Now, you clip everything and since your K&S are super loud, you can clip them and bring up the entire mix without destroying it or losing transient impacts

#

It's also generally advised to use a clicky kick sound

#

But I don't like that sound very much so I don't

Thank you i will look into this more tonight and send you whatever i write

Mix sounds significantly better than the OG. Things have space now and the snare dynamics are peaking through. Look up the concept of parallel compression, HelpMeDevvon has a wonderful video on it I actually linked previously in this chat. Parallel compression can make what you're targeting sit comfortably in a mix without overpowering everything else.

As for the mix, it sounds a lot better

#

I thin the top end of your kit could be defined a bit more. Like the snare and kick are missing a little of the clickiness

#

only a touch so maybe like a 1-1.5 db boost in the high mid/low high range

#

and cut a little bit of the 500-700 range on the kick

fringe geode
wicked berry
#

really good imo

#

what sets it apart from mine is in the guitars there is a lot more mids and less low end and high end, kick has a lot of reverb and snare is higher

#

for my snare I learned from simone on the reflections nail the mix

#

but to sum mine up, it's two one shots and 2 snares from ggd

#

I used a modern and massive snare and a high tuned ringy snare from the benny greb kit

#

but i can send the one shots later if you ping me

fringe geode
#

This better?

#

I also did a little automation work.

#

I also undid the EQ dip at 100ish hz and it brought back some power to the guitars.

wicked berry
#

imo it wouldn't really fit this song but there's a trick with pro mb i use on chugs

#

the idea is that you put it on the di to quickly raise the high end or where the pick attack is on the spectrum right when the pick hits the strings then drop down after that

#

it creates like almost a laser beam chug

fringe geode
wicked berry
#

anyway that's another thing different from our guitars 😭 but it's real fun lol so try it out sometime

#

got it from a YouTube video

#

might as well send it here one sec

fringe geode
wicked berry
#

it's great for emphasizing chugs and stuff

halcyon holly
#

You can also just boost before the amp

#

Easiest way to get definition is a simple eq move pre-amp

wicked berry
#

problem is that unless the boost is subtle it will affect the di tone slightly because it doesn't dip back to normal after the chug like with pro mb

#

so using pro mb unlocks the ability to make huge boosts, making the pick attack super scrapy without affecting di tone

the echoing choir unison voice part around 1:09 sounds kinda off for me. idk if it's supposed to be like a choir effect or a delay effect
you could do stuff like recording the same line over and over again (maybe each take is from standing at different positions in your room) and then layering it together into one unified sound

vocals do kinda sound like you sung them quietly rather than at singing volume (idk if that's the vibe you're going for). idk why it sounds that way i just hear it kinda that way

quite a few updates (no extension yet)
rebalancing guitar and other instruments' volume
some changes in the mixing for strings and solo violin
increased tempo from 210 to 220 bpm
added subtle impact sounds during transitions to parts
changed guitar riffing during verse part so it has a melodeath-y vibe
accordingly, removed the string ostinatos during the verse part so it doesn't overshadow the guitar
slight alteration to the violin melody: in 0:18-0:19 and next loop the G note is now a G# note

That doesn't sound too bad to me, and I'm not going to go around and critique people's mixes right now because I'm still pretty new to production and learning myself. The point I'm trying to make is it sounds like you've hit a wall where you are at and you are happy sitting with a mix that could be so much better if you put in a little extra effort, and that doesn't make sense to me why you would do that.

fringe geode

This one isn't as bad. But I can barely hear the guitar.

balmy forum
tender oak
#

In Reaper it's not too difficult. Like to a bus? Just create a track with the stuff you want on it and send those tracks to it. In the options for the drum tracks themselves there should be a "Send to Master" option. You can disable that so they send only to your bus, then the bus sends to the master. There's some nice tutorials on it on YouTube / Google.

#

Kontakt is the reason I don't use GGD anymore.

vale vapor
#

The problem chao is that he refuses to use a daw that lets him use more than 8-16 tracks, which is why he can't route his drums to separate channels

#

He processes them all at once

#

Which is why his mixes sound like that

balmy forum
#

thats not a track amount problem

fringe geode
#

But regardless his problem is he can't even route the drums to BEGIN with.

vale vapor
fringe geode
#

That's a Kontakt problem not a DAW problem.

vale vapor
#

Basically just set your outputs in kontakt by opening the output window, set it to st.1 through st.5 and route each drum in GGD to eat output

#

Kick st.1, snare st.2, toms st.3, OHs st.4, rooms st.5

balmy forum
vale vapor
#

Then route to external channels in reaper

vale vapor
#

Hit the plus to create a new output and assign it to the next channels in order

#

So if st.1 is channels 1+2, st.2 will be 2+3

#

And so on

balmy forum
vale vapor
#

Either you're doing something wrong or your install is broken

balmy forum

no my drum kit litteraly cannot be routed

tender oak

You don't. Just take some time and Google how to properly route it. Watch tutorial after tutorial. Either you're doing something wrong or it is genuinely bugged. Take the time to change your search terms if you're not getting the info you need. I'm sure there's a forum post buried somewhere of someone having your exact issue. If it's a genuine bug, email the company.

As for compression, do not be afraid of it. It's easy to overuse, yes. But it's also just as easy to underuse.

I wanna give ML Drums another try now that I know more mixing stuff. I didn't like it when I first tried it.

vale vapor
#

anything more than a stereo drum track

vale vapor
#

and you won't be able to ever EQ your drums individually

#

or comp them individually

vale vapor
#

its very usable

fringe geode
vale vapor
#

oh for sure

#

i believe this is ML drums kick + snare

fringe geode
# vale vapor

Question for your guitars, do you do any sidechaining?

vale vapor
#

but recently i have been sidechaining my guitars to my snare by about -0.7db

#

which i like the sound of

#

its barely noticeable but makes the snare just the smallest bit clearer

fringe geode
vale vapor
#

yeah i hear it alot

#

especially modern mixes

blissful cliff
vale vapor
tender oak
# vale vapor

Everyone in the parking lot I'm in just enjoyed that

blissful cliff
vale vapor
#

LOLL

vale vapor
#

which are inaudible

fringe geode
#

My whole thing is that my guitars sound produced right. But also not like modern metal like that.

vale vapor
# vale vapor which are inaudible

then, you put a compressor on this second channel, which is triggered to do whatever you want based on the input of the secondary channels

#

So you can make your guitars dip down based on whenever your snare hits

vale vapor
#

personally i think its overdone

#

i like my guitars in the front of the mix, not behind any sidechain except a little on the snare

tender oak
#

Modern guitars are so buried so I appreciate that mindset

vale vapor
#

Yeah especially baddycore bands

#

its like the guitar is an afterthought

#

or a space-filler

#

its METAL for crying out loud!

blissful cliff
#

FR

vale vapor
#

the guitars and riffs should be the forefront of the mix

#

it has the widest frequency spectrum after all

fringe geode
#

I feel like my guitars are straight from the 90s lol. Might be because I'm putting that tube saturation on that too which is making my guitars less focused but like....you get what I mean right?

vale vapor
#

yeah i can hear it

#

not necessarily a bad thing

fringe geode
#

I guess it makes sense I grew up on a lot of early 2000s nu metal XD

#

And Pop Punk.

tender oak
#

I like tube and tape mixed but the tube being so subtle you almost don't notice it till you take it away. Just a kiss on the sound as opposed to actually distorting it. Leave most of the real saturation to the tape

#

It just adds life in my ears

vale vapor
#

i honestly dont use much saturation except a little on my master bus when mastering

#

i use either saturn with a single split above 200hz at 30% drive and like 20% mix

#

or a plugin called Kiss of Death at like 3% mix

#

both sound pretty good

#

saturn makes the mix sound huge on that setting, and kiss of death makes it pretty warm sounding

#

so its just whatever i think fits the song

fringe geode
vale vapor
#

that sounds great dude

tender oak
#

I use magma lil tube and UA Oxide Tape Recorder

vale vapor
#

oh another classic modern metal thing that i always hear @fringe geode

#

sidechain your rooms to your kick and snare close mics

#

subtly but noticeably

#

emphasis more on the snare

#

but like when the snare hits, the kick should make the rooms dip down

#

that's such a big thing i always hear

#

it's in my liquid death snare tests from above

fringe geode
vale vapor
#

nooo

#

well you could always fake it

#

send it to a verb bus on a room setting and sidechain that

fringe geode
#

What I CAN do tho, is I have control over the cymbals for the room. What I do is I bring that shit down to let the kick and snare pop in the room more.

vale vapor
#

oh yeah for sure

fringe geode
#

Keep the cymbals close micd.

vale vapor
#

based

fringe geode
#

Sometimes I like some cymbals in the room for some ambiance.

#

But mostly let the close mics do the work.

vale vapor
#

same

#

Do you ever put room verb on your guitars

#

ive been doing that on all my mixes recently cause i hear it in a ton of stuff

#

like when the left channel gtr plays, i can hear a tiny room verb in the right ear

fringe geode
vale vapor
#

and vice versa

#

Ahh interesting

fringe geode
# vale vapor Ahh interesting

Verb makes it less aggressive because it's diffusing the sound. Delay keeps the aggression but it can get a little messy so you gotta play with it.

vale vapor
#

i dont mind the diffused sound

#

its always at like 2% mix so lol

#

it really only is noticeable when you solo L or R

fringe geode
#

Ah okay. But it's why verb is usually put on a seperate track from the main guitar.

#

It doesn't always work but it helps a little.

vale vapor
#

makes sense

#

Multitrack recording drums has been a thing since essentially the invention of stereo

#

Really, it was around the late 60s that drums became (commonly) processed separately on different channels

#

This was, of course, done for a reason. Processing drums all on the same channel is a pretty dead end thing to do these days

fringe geode
# halcyon holly I really don't think that's true

It was a thing. My production teacher had been mixing since the 70s. He said when he started, because there was so little tracks (it was like 7 or 8 tracks) they used to just put two mics over the drums and each mic would go to a seperate track and then was processed together like that.

halcyon holly
#

In the 70s, we had queen recording opera, with 70+ vocal layers lmao

#

I think you're more thinking 60s

#

Also "my teacher once said" isn't a source

#

This argument also kinda falls short because like, okay, in the 60s you usually only did kick and OH or something similar, but why would you choose to do taht now? We moved away from processing drums on only one channel for a reason. It really isn't a good idea anymore

fringe geode
