This too.
i like this one more probably
reminds me of demon hunter for some reason
The Tremonster is a beastly guitar player.
Here's a older project I made while I was still learning to mix. I wanna go back and remix it.
I mean I'm still learning to mix but y'know.
Earlier. I made this maybe 2 years ago now.
still insane for a beginner mix
way better than my first mix lol
tbf i started when i was 10
I wrote this one for the sake of writing lol. The Break the Glass stuff I have littered around this server is like a series of personal experimental stuff.
oh sick
So I'll experiment with writing differently or mixing differently. Sometimes the riffs come out and goes into that sub category for later.
I'm not a very technical player so I have to push myself to try new things and incorporate them into my style. Oh and by the way a lot of the stuff in that stuff is all downpicking.
james hetfield core lol
yeah no i typically downpick as much as possible when tracking, because it just sounds cleaner
live i do whatever for the sake of my wrists haha
i tend to use whatever pick style is most efficient for the riff
Lol idk how to alternate pick that well and will only do it if my wrist gets tired. But I downpick a LOT so it takes a while lol.
alternate picking is just down/up repeated
you seem like a skilled guitarist already so alternate picking should honestly be your next step
practice tremelo specifically
tremelo picking gets your alternate picking way faster
26
i was debating if you were lying about when you started cause your stuff genuinely is way better than most people starting out in music
you got a musical family?
Kinda. My GPA was in a doowop (I think that's how you spell it) band way back in the 60s and 70s, and my dad was a DJ through the 90s.
I don't have siblings lol.
And the rest of my family are more into other things. I'm sorta the black sheep of the family in a way XD
I actually started as a drummer first.
ahh yeah
already have a good understanding of what drum midi is physically possible to play or not LOL
I played guitar on the side when I was young just cuz nu metal was a thing and angry guitars make brain go brrr.
very true
let me send you one of my earliest metal mixes
its
really bad lol
forgot what folder i have it in lmao
Lol
Not bad for a 14 yro.
its really bad LOL
as soon as the guitars come in i always laugh cause it just smashes the entire mix
Nah for a 14 year old it's not bad
I wasn't mixing at 14.
I was looking at gear at 14.
LOL
Going into my local rehearsal studio autistically looking at Mesa amps cuz I wanted one (still do but no room RIP) and being a band was fun.
I didnt start looking into mixing until I was in my 20s and the band had dissolved.
Sadly no. Wish we did but we didn't get to the recording part lol...
no youtube recordings?
Nope. I've memorized the songs tho and how they go.
oh sick, maybe you could write em into new demos
I've been mostly trying to produce EDM atm and wanna get back into making metal. But I just can't seem to get riffs going, anyone else faced the same before and any suggetsions on how to get back into it?
identify the style of metal you want to create
listen to and practice a ton of riffs in that style
combine elements of what you learned to make your own riffs
i miss the streams man, it was cool af haning out with other metalheads with a proper host
when geometry dash obtains a 7 string
here is a song, it is a song that is songy
Is it a smart idea to independently release a debut ep or just have demos pre getting signed
If you're making metal, getting signed isn't the way to go
Unless somehow you score a deal with a huge label, most of what you can do can be done independently with good marketing
Noted
Im trying to like get an idea of how doing this stuff in a metalcore band long term works
If your band has plans to play live
Grind doing shows
Do a ton of shows
Climb your way up the scene by talking to other bands, promoters, and connections
But overall
WRITE INTERESTING MUSIC
That matters most
You can do all those things and go nowhere if your music is boring
Have a target audience
My band has a song with almost 60k streams and we've been together since late 2023
We are unsigned
We just did tons of shows and played with bands who are bigger than us
Talked to promoters, and have a super active social media
And our debut album has almost 200k streams alltogether
Write good music and do a ton of shows lol
Unbroken Reign
I'll be sure to give the album a listen
Ayy ty
Oh fire
I actually used a six string strat
YOOOO the albums diree

Love to see some Christian metal
And done well
thoughts?
dope
so what should i do again?
hell yeah, stratocasters are great
?
you just said do shows like 5 times lol
yeah i completly agree i thought it was just funny how many times you said it
hey i remixed one of my songs, i think it sounds simmilar to yours
i second that
does anyone know how i can make the kick more noticable? I have it sidechained but it's still not coming through
@stiff raptor there is no audio but this is what i have for brood of vipers
im gonna edit in the audio
it is quite laggy
@stiff raptor with audio
oh come on it cut off
add some low end
just updated my portfolio! if anyone is interested in production work, check out my site here for samples of my work
ayy pretty cool site
turns out i did not have any procession on guitar outside of DI shaping and amp itself... lol
hey does anyone know how to get impacts to sit correctly? i cant seem to
still sounds a bit off

I miss nik nocturnal
I mean this is cool but not close to my example at all lmao
your drums sound pretty overprocessed here, and too loud compared to the guitar especially
guitar and bass are too quiet
The mix is pretty muddy overall as well
they are?
ok lemme try that
its not really a muddy mix i just suck at playing metalcore so the playing is a bit messy
the guitar and bass are clashing
overlapping low frequencies
try to pull up a song you like and see how similar you can get the mix to sound
and try using less processing in general

what about this?

bro at this point big conglomerates do not care of copyright protection or originality, especially Music generating AI companies, it's a dog eat dog world out there.

what genre are both of these songs? idk what they even are

Hey I just got some parts of my music setup started
So I can record quietly
any recommendations for speakers? budget really isnāt a big issue
mainly play like Post hardcore metalcore etc in a lot of diff tunings ig
Speakers are VERY subjective. Something that someone likes you may hate and vice versa. I highly suggest you try some whether be at a Guitar Center or local music and audio shop. I can give you some to look at. Particularly Yamaha, Kali Audio, and Adam Audio seem to be the more popular ones.
I saw Yamaha HS7s being commonly suggested
Iāve got an Apollo USB solo + Neural DSP and reaper to create
so idk if thatāll change much
And then these two beauties
Yeah the HS7s are really popular because they are relatively flat. There are also JBL speakers that are popular. Personally I don't like Yamaha's at all and prefer Adam Audio. But I understand people don't like Adam Audio ones much because they use a ribbon tweeder and it messes with their sense of where the bass is.
hm
Iāll do my research
Iām planning to get em next pay day so I got time
Yeah its all about research. Find a song or a mix you like and play it through the speakers to test em. Test about 2 to 3 sets at a time until you find a pair you like.
Iāve been tryna learn this one song by In hearts wake recently
Cos I love the sound
Earthwalker
Drop G# 7 string

At the end of the day though remember, it's all personal preference, your ear will guide you. Research will only help so much until you actually hear the speakers.

I didn't know it was attack attack til after i finished it lol
Thought it was a random band's song
attack attack's version sounds too compressed in my opinion
Guitar tone and drums are mad weird on their version
snare's transients are nonexistent there

A year ago, I made the leap from Logic Pro to Pro Tools, and it completely changed how I work. From editing guitars and mixing tracks to file management and stability, Iāve spent twelve solid months putting Pro Tools through its paces.

Just looking back at this, are my drums still over processed @stiff raptor
They just don't sound that good
specifically the kick and snare
its just how theyre processed
kick sounds really thumpy and the snare sounds honky

Let's EQ and compress these heavy drum tracks the RIGHT way.
This is part 1 of a 3-part video series where I remix an old mix of mine from way back in 2010.
āThe original mix was less than stellar and I was curious to see what I could do with th...
Part of getting better is realizing there is always room for improvement
Compare your drums to a reference by a pro
Oh absolutely Iām all for that, but I still donāt know whatās wrong
Compare your process to the video
Jpw?
James Paul wisner
And he has 50yrs of experience so donāt go that way haha
You have a lot to learn
Yo guys has anybody used ample metal hellraiser before? What was your experience? I used the demo and it sounds incredible to me, but the demo died before i could save anything lmao, was wondering what others experiences with it was
The drums are lacking top end. Infact, this whole mix sounds like it's got a low shelf boost at 80-100hz and a lot of high end removed. The bass is far too ontop of the mix and has nothing but one sine wave at the note it's playing. Mids, low mids, and top end are equally important for bass in this genre as guitar and all other instruments.
yeah obv
ill fix that now
thing i made for one of my IRL friends to pick up guitar again so he can have something cool and fun to play while it's still quite easy
im making a menu song for someones game out of boredom and idk what can i do to make it sound more interesting mix wise, im planning for it to be about 3 mins long, meant to be steampunk/industrial
Waves is giving away a pretty decent new plugin today for those looking for a punchy yet still smooth compressor. The Magma StressBox. Single knob plugin, seems pretty musical, the demos sound really nice. It's like the BB Tubes compressor in a lite form.
https://www.waves.com/plugins/magma-stressbox
I don't trust single knobs
They add some crazy back end processing that cannot be controlled
Especially the waves stuff
I finally upgraded my talking desk audio chain, and I went with the Rupert Neve Designs Newton Channel. Iāve been wanting something that makes my voice sound finished without needing stacks of plugins in post, and this thing delivers.
In this video, I go over what the Newton is, install it into my rack, dial it in for spoken voice, and do som...
Played with it a bit. I like it on kicks and in general on drums, also sounds nice on bass. It does quite a bit with a little push of the knob, you're absolutely right, but it does make things more punchy and up front with a bit of distortion. I paired it on a drum track with an LA2A for some smoothness and it added this up front knock that I kind of actually dig. I can see this being used well on metal drums and bass that need a little something extra especially if paired with other tools. I'm sure there's a ton of other tools for this, but hey it was free lol.
The only (semi) one knob plugin i love is Gain Reduction by JST
works so well on scream vox
100%
i use this with another one knob wonder which is by coincidence the exciter from waves
called aphex aural vintage exciter
ah yes
i havent gotten into the waves plugins that much mostly cause im trying to move my workflow to as many free plugs as possible (to prove that you can get a pro sound without having to pay)
I have too many waves plugins at this point lmao
i like using alot of obscure plugins

anyone happen to know what kind of filter is on these drums? at least i think theyre drums š
sounds like fart pedal blended in with some slapback delay, reverb and some eq automation dipping out high frequencies
probably the number two version
i hate that you're exactly right

i really like mdl tones ultimate heavy drums
i think the drums here sound really similar to early 2010s sturgis
If you wanna be exact, he used SSD4 with Kick 12 and Snare 13a

i was absent here for this long because discord got blocked
like it was actually blocked in 2024 but i had a bypass
and now i have to enable vpn every time i want to go in discord

i like how everything sounds like on my new phone
Why
Geoblocking by russia?
Or like
Parental controls
LOL
geoblocking in russia
Dang
did he edit them?
i'm playing with ssd4 now
like i mean did he mix them
Oh yeah they're mixed
i'm recreating the murder mitten breakdown rn and they're really similar even without any post mixing on ssd
btw did sturgis use the same snare for attack attack 2010 self titled ?
@stiff raptor
It's likely
I cant recall
All i know is he mainly used ssd4 samples (namely snare 13a) and custom ones
tried to do some stuff with ssd4
(i know that the snare is too quiet but i have troubles with routing stuff rn)
That sounds sick
i kinda took inspiration from asking alexandria
i was once possibly maybe perhaps a cowboy king
damn these track titles from stand up and scream
what i made so far
@stiff raptor
back on my monitors
very sturgis sounding drums
i managed to fix snare
Yep
sounds just like his LOL
the snare is a little pokey
but i like the arrangement alot
i finally released my inner sturgis
LOL
and i used sorry you're not a winner riff in the end lol
LOL
HOLY SHIT I JUST DISCOVERED SOMETHING.
what?
Okay so you may or may not know there are multiple types of saturation like tape, tube, etc. WELL you see saturation can be used to do stuff like control peaks which is great for stuff like bass, drums, and vocals but NOT great on stuff like guitar. Specifically tube saturation is not great on guitar and the reason WHY I say this is because while yes it can add harmonics and control your peaks, it alsoo can make your guitars less focused in the mix depending on how much you're applying, because, especially for metal, your guitars are already saturated af!
Now mind you in my particular testing it only does this with tube saturation and not tape saturation (which I find weird) and I could be COMPLETELY fuckin wrong and not understand how shit works (as I often do) but man I know what my ears tell me.
Hmmmm

@stiff raptor Am I right or nah?
added a bit of saturation on drum bus here
Not sure why it does that with tube saturation and not tape saturation tho.
But its something I've noticed.
i lost you at okay...
PFFFFT
hahaaa
Wot u confused about.
im joking i understand haha
Oh okay XD
how is this so much better
oh i think I can use it without vpn now
@stiff raptor
which album?
i thought it was kick 10 snare 12a or something unless thats just a myth lol xd
oh wait ur right
i got the numbers wrong
he did use snare 13a too as well iirc
yeah i think so
i think he used 13a for iss new demons
Banger song. Unrelated to production, but just have to say it.
murder mitten my fav
but also i like "We're Not in Kansas Anymore" and "Crystal Ball"
Murden Mitten is a classic. NZT48, Endless Sky, and End of the World Party also slap. Honestly their first like 3-4 albums are hype.
Edit: Had to add Filth Friends Unite. Banger and a half.
I love all of those albums but End of the World party is my top from them
Peak electronicore stuff
and i like cameron mizell's production on that album more than Joey's on their following albums
Cameron is underrated
His prod style is my hyperfixation lol /hj
Most of the tricks i know i learned from studying his stuff
I've chatted with him a few times as well, love his work
I like how big and fat his stuff always sounds.
I specifically love his drum mixes
They're never bland sounding
And usually pretty polarizing due to that
im doing an album for a client in the mizell style actually, they have one single out so far
pretty happy with how it turned out! i think its pretty close
Oh yeah that's straight up Mizellified. Actually sick dude. Sounds great in my headphones. The drums are great, love the weight and presence in the kick and snare. Sounds like it came right outta Chango. And the performance of the band, definitely throwing that in rotation
thanks so much bro! im super excited to help bring this style back lmao
we need more unique sounding stuff in 2026
Absolutely. Shits too clean now. Industrialized. We need to bring back some weight and umph to shit. š
FACTS
i'd prefer a dirty raw sounding unique mix than an uber-clean sterile mix with no balls to it
For real. Bring some realness back to the sound.
part of why i hate the buster kit š
I was looking into SSD5.5 (because of this chat) as its on sale. They sound insane tbh.
bro this is what i used to use when i started making metal, i have the hihat sound burned into my brain š
i dont think i could ever use this one again LOL
it would be a fun challenge, tbh
Any tips on a decent free drum plugin that I can use the reaper note editor thing to create beats with? lmao
I plan on recording some shit with my dad soon using the Misha Mansoor Neural DSP amp sim and just need something to write drums on. Dude shreds. Sadly my apartment cant fit my e-kit or I'd simply record them myself.
99% of the drums i use are free funnily enough
the non-mizell ones
that modern demo i sent a while back is a mishmash of free resources
if you want, i can dm you and show you my entire setup. it's pretty gruelling to setup but once you do you're basically set for life lol
and its easy to swap out samples and stuff
I knew to ask you, I remember your crusade to use freeware and get a pro sound (which I appreciate as a broke ass bitch myself) lol
Sure thing man. I appreciate it!
Crusade is the perfect word for it
Pretty cool idea
I've wondered in the past how far i'd get with only free vsts
it takes away a lot of creative freedom from me personally, i know my tools and i like them
limiting resources breeds creativity
I'm considering uninstalling all my pirated mixing plugins
Guys what genre is this?
I love how "3D" album sounds like
The snare is giant
@past shell @stiff raptor I finaly understand it! this mix is entirly free, thoughts?
drums sound a lot better than before
bass is still very loud and drowning out the guitars
rhythm guitars need to come up a ton and bass needs to come down
lol i was just using the fop kit up until i posted that new clip with my own mirar type drum kit setup
chango studios fop kit for the 3d sound but it just didnt slap or clap too hard for some odd reason i guess lol like maybe the fop kit samples i downloaded werent all too perfectly premixed or it wasnt the exact same i see stars kit
we got the next skrillex dude, ur going hard asssfffffff
Not sure how i feel about this
Arrangement is sick
Do you have more processing on the fop kit?
The fop kit is already fully processed
nope this isnt a fop kit anymore
just my own mirar inspired drum kit where i tried to make it a lot like theirs
Ah
and it might be like detuned by 35 in ssd 5.5
i think that equates to 3.5 semitones
whys your name the rise core dealer? is there an origin story?
nah it sounds weird
the mix overall is pretty weirdly balanced
the kick sounds like its lacking alot of low end and the snare sounds like a thunk lol
i just upgraded my mix. is this better? someone else also said the mix was too thin earlier lol
the snare is a bit darker here idk if u can tell and i changed the bass and guitar tones to be thicker and the kick is just louder
i kind of want to keep the snare having the same mirar character but if anything, i should change the eq if needed still
it honestly still needs alot of work, i might suggest starting from scratch
its kind of a lot of things wrong at once lol
if you want like exact feedback i can give it, but i dont wanna just sit here picking apart your mix haha
mb i didnt think it needed much work but at the same time i dont have the golden professional ears as of rn lol
what does exact feedback look like if im starting new?
step by step help while showing progress?
i can give you some pointers but doing a step by step in depth walk through is not something i can currently dedicate my time to
I would recommend looking into this guy on youtube
he has some of the best advice when it comes to mixing metal
The guitar sounds wrong, I think you should turn it down and darken it a Little, the kick sounds too flabby in my opinion as well
thanks i took your advice. i pitched it back to default lol from -3.5 semitones
i think i wanna keep this guitar tone as is though actually cuz this scooped sound is sick and badass to me lowkey
fair
there is a lot of mixed imformation on this but what should i use for mixing? headphones or monitors
Truly? Monitors. But you need a well treated space for them to read right. They're an investment in both money and time but worth it. Headphones are also good though, though hit or miss. You'd need to do research on a good pair. I've seen that open back are better for mixing because they present a more natural sound stage whereas closed back are better for recording because no bleed. A good idea with headphone mixing in general is to simply render it out and listen to it back on as many different things as you can. Your phone, your PC speakers, your car, your favorite bluetooth boomer, etc. That way you can make mental notes to achieve a balanced mix if you find that a mix sounds good in your cans but not elsewhere.
Very good advice. I will add though, if you are very comfortable with the device you're listening on (given its more than halfway decent and isn't absolutely terrible) you should be able to take note of the discrepancies of how your device sounds and still make good mixes
E.g. if i have headphones that have too much bass, and i know this, i can compensate by making sure i don't put too little bass in my mixes even though it may sound like too much on my headphones
Listening on multiple devices does help
But if your mix sounds great on flat monitors, it'll sound great on any device
^That
@grave marlin side question, have any advice on treating a room with monitors? I have some pretty great monitors and my room is an untreated bedroom with carpet
I have some acoustic paneling (the real kind) i plan on putting up but not really sure where
Or where matters most
yeah i need that to, have you done an MATT test?
I'm no expert but from looking into it recently (same mostly untreated bedroom) you have to look into your monitors manual and it should give you the best setup with the ideal angles for those monitors, then you just math it from there to figure out where that sounds gonna bounce and resonate the hardest so you can pad those areas. I know there's some decent YouTube tutorials on the ideal way, just don't have em saved lol
@stiff raptor https://www.audiocheck.net/audiotests_matt.php i recommend doing this to see how seriously you need it
my room is fucked lol
I mix in headphones myself because of my living space. Shoebox apartment with thin ass walls. Neighbors love it when I'm recording, let me tell you. So out of courtesy, headphone mixing it is. Plus, I can't help but sit there twiddling virtual knobs til like 3am and that'd be plain rude šš
Gotcha
I notice that when i mix and go back and forth between my monitors and headphones it sounds the best
Oh absolutely. Your mixes are always balanced as hell but still sound big, going back and forth probably helps with that.
@stiff raptor did you do this?
its not really helpful cause i dont really know what im listening for
just read the instructions on the website
yeah it wasn't very helpful, just watched a 90 second video on finding early reflection spots š
oh ok!
wrote this
im about to re do the drums they were just stereo for the draft

i think youre processing everything way too much, try and getting your mix down using only your source plugins to start. So dial your amp using only the plugin youre using, same for bass n drums then fix your volumes. right now everything is super over processed and i think your only making it worse for yourself trying to fix it because there is so much going on.
i see what you mean but im not gonna start over cuz thats something i do only when my mix is going too horribly wrong and i personally prefer top down mixing meaning starting from where i last left off in the project. just how i choose to improve and work on things instead of starting from scratch but i have another version to post in a minute since that other one is a few days old now
wawa
wow this is awesome
very robotic character
like futuristic
some kinda wobbly effect going on even
it might be hard to make my snare work out and i might have to reintroduce one of my real snare layers attack cuz the attack is only 2 layered trance kick drums atm though
but this is an experimental mix here like a total experiment i would say
i personally think you could learn alot from restarting your mix. itl help you understand what could be the prblem in your previous versions which because there is so much going on you might right now be blinded by. but its your creative process so please do so however you want man keep it up!
but because its experimental and like mirar influenced, im trying not to scrap this and start over
3 days laters mix
yeah the drum kit might not be working out
ah the master is so distorted nvm
im using headphones and bluetooth noise cancelling earbuds too
if you want to we can go in a vc ill help you out
my monitors are kind of bad
i cant screenshare cubases sound unfortunately
it doesnt work for me
you 100% sure?
have you tried using the voxengo recorder method?
works for me in cubase
you set the output to mme and mme device to something you dont use like waves drivers
@flat oar
if you need help setting it up lmk
@magic gust is this decent for improvement? XD
the guitars sound super muffled and the drums are extremely clicky
if you want, you can send the raw stems of your project to me and ill mix a preview of it to give you an idea of how your mix could sound
ty i'll send em over soon
i'll post one more mix for now here. but once you post your own version of mine, should i just use it as reference for my next mix practice?
yes!
im using the thall amp for my guitars btw, do you think this works well? and when i di matched then my signal got a lot brighter
cuz i have ndsp's misha mansoor vst too
i'll make the stems now
here's my take on a section of this mix
wasn't super easy with the stems, most of them need to be rerecorded
but i think it sounds pretty okay despite that lol
also just gonna drop this here
original composition, production, mix, and master by me, with ubrscreamer on scream vox as usual
this one was for a 3-day contest, wasn't really sweating the craziest mix ever
but i think it turned out pretty good for what it was
i also took some creative liberties like the ridiculously loud sub drop lol
Can someone lmk what they think abt the solo? On phone it donāt show how far u are in but how longs left, and itās at 1:37 left. Also what genre is this song?
i def wouldnt say djentcore, kinda reminds me of old korn stuff lol
oh ok, ty bro
hey @stiff raptor are you in australia rn?
i just saw someone that looked identical to you walking next to someone that looked like the screamer guy
My doppelganger is the singer of collective dust
you have 2 lol
are your monitors meant to be angled like that?
i thought they need to be an equilateral triangle between themselfs and the mixing position
fair
also if you can, get the monitors out of the corners. its a super big deal apparently
just move the desk lol, i more meant if you ever get the chance
Please stay in your own lane, i didn't ask for advice
wh-
every single day i upload somthing you say you can always get better
im not saying your bad
I just need to stop replying to you atp
what did i do?!
try to ke- nah im joking, looks cool i dont know shit about vocal booths
i finally have ndsp mantra
ooh nice
is it worth?
Haven't tried it much, but so far so good
I still need to study vocal techniques & recording
are there any attack attack 2010 self-titled stems available?
There's some on ultimatemetal forum for a few songs i think
I did one here a while ago
Idr what the song is called
The Wretched iirc
where do you get your scene synths?
I use adam szabo's viper
although sylenth1 has some fire presets as well
basically the same synths caleb shomo used in someday came suddenly and 2010 self titled
i only saw attack attack stick stickly and the link was broken
nvm found smokahontas
jeez these multitracks are so bad
lol my reaper crashed
Might be the best riff ive written in all 3-4 years ive played
hi
So what is the best one
99% of the tone is about the cab you use
Never heard of it
LeGion sounds incredible, and works for everything
LeXtac is also great
LeCto
ill show a preview one sec
also, Neural Amp Modeler
if you download profiles of great amps, you will get a great sound
Thing is my setup is also very cheap, Boss katana and this bummy guitar
don't use your actual amp if youre gonna use an amp sim
The amp has 0 tone included
Like it doesn't actually record the cab's output, it just grabs the guitar signal
No idea how it works but it does
oh ok that should work then
My tone is basically
Archetype Gojira (JD 7 preset with gate turned up)
KHS Hass effect (for depth)
EQ
Fresh Air (for clarity)
OTT (cut through the mix, add more high end)
Sounds good to me LMAO
What was the setup for Thrones
lepou amps
LOL
Wait were you the dude who dmed our insta
asking for the brood of vipers tone
or is that someone else
No
ahh
- Gojira: Fine, great amp, i dont use it ever because i prefer how my free amps sound
- Hass effect: when you double track guitars, you are doing the hass effect but for real, adding a hass effect plugin is going to cause ALL SORTS of issues and sound terrible
- EQ: all good here
- Fresh Air: why? just add high end in the EQ stage
- OTT: this is a multiband over-the-top compressor. It smashes things completely. Guitars are already compressed due to how amps work. Adding more insanely over the top multiband compression is gonna make your guitars sound harsh and completely overbearing
you dont have to reply to this one, i just wanted to elaborate on why i wouldnt do what you did to your guitar
Forgot to mention that my OTT is at 10% volume
Still, i'd avoid it unless you're trying to do buster-core
or like crazy harsh modern hardcore music
where the guitar needs to sound like not a guitar anymore
OTT at 100% sounds awful
OTT is mainly best for EDM music when you need to flatten a digital signal
for guitar it just isn't something i'd ever wanna use
except in rare cases

SSD5 Kit - https://stevenslatedrums.com/ssd5/#S...
The answer is yes
I copied a lot from that dude
my guitar chain looks like this, always:
- Noise reduction (only if my computer is being weird and interfering with my signal)
- Gate
- free tube screamer (TSC 1.1)
- free amp (usually LePou LeGion or Neural Amp Modeler)
- Cab sim in NadIR , the best free Cab loader (IR is usually something like a Mesa 2000 4x12 or something similar. I recently have been gravitating towards big cabs micd with a 57 or 421. usually when you download IRs, you can check what mics it was micd with)
- EQ (low cut, high cut, and some light surgical stuff in the middle)
yeah honestly youd be better using a free amp or just archetype gojira with a better preset and some better EQ
Yeah I forget what my eq looks like
It's probably not amazing
eq will heavily depend on what the tone is and what it needs
Also is Circvit Bass a good free midi bass?
did you listen to the screen recordings?
Fair enough
On phone speakers rn
doing some SSD4 drum tests
@grand jasper kick 10 btw
i find the SSD snares to be kinda lifeless so im trying to process it in an unconventional way to give it some more spice
kick sounds amazing tho no wonder everyone used kick10
entirely free plugins + freebies btw (minus SSD4)
props to anyone who knows the midi
yay mannequin religion
what's that reaper skin btw
it was one of the first electronicore tracks i listened to lel (besides attack attack - stick stickly ofc)
wait is ssd5 free
do i hear some other snare layered with ssd4's
i feel like you're using drumforge sturgis fire edition
btw
(i forgor to add buster's back vocals)
Its called 80gray spectrum
Best reaper skin
Nah its just snare 4 i think?
I dont remember what snare
It was a lower tuned one
spectrum?
Yurr
hm
I have a very short plate verb that's at like 20% width
At like -8db
I wanted a little more body
i can only see the 80gray, without "spectrum"
Spectrum is one of the color versions in the zip file
There's like 8 diff color options when you download it
this is sick1
i think that snare could use more mid and come up
same with room
thoughts?
sounds cool
i adore the snare on this, guitars kinda sound dark and i think they should be more bright and have more bite to em
drums sound the best
vocal mix is also great
im not really sure what's going on here, the levels are super weird, whole mix is real quiet
the drums sound mid-scooped and the snare is really pokey/transient heavy
the mix also sounds really narrow, like your guitars aren't fully panned
Yeah lol itās not my favourite
this is the one i need help with
how did you make the snare verb out in ssd4
guys i just received the multi tracks of i local metal band heres my mix
i wonder who it is?
local metal band?
damn
i feel like i am the only one in my town who listens to metalcore
let alone crabcore
@ruby jay
diddnt you cover this?
do you want the stems?
anyways
what are your opinions on i see stars - the end of the world party's mix?
yes
sure!
the mix is goated
cameron mizell mixed it
but tbh i like 3D's mix more
the snare is just huge there
I tried restrains kit
who's 3D?
oh mb
that's also a cmiz mix
that snare sounding huge because the guitars aren't taking much space in that frequency range compared to teotwp
oh man i remember restrains
but my absolute fav would be either new demons or digital renegade
i see stars declined after treehouse
Dawg I thought you were serious
You gotta finish this, it's sooo good
Not an ssd4 thing, i just made a new channel in reaper and sent the snare close mic to it
Put a mono plate verb at 100% mix on the new channel
no its the actual stems
Wait are you doing this for fun or are they rereleasing Holy Roller
im just doing it for fun
you can have the stems if you want
ive also got doomed by bmth
bro what lol
its part of a nail the mix thing, they release multitracks for people to practice mixing with
Oh I've never heard of this
i mean this guy isn't even an adult so i dont think spiritbox would hire him to mix their music
Fair enough
None taken
NTM releases stems out every month if you're subscribed to their thing
Interesting
hahaha
no if you go through YouTube, click on the band you want, buy a subscription for 1$ a month, get the stems, cancel your subscription you get 1$ stems
Well yeah lol
big broon
im making it my goal to mix spiritbox or another huge band before im 18 now haha
happy birthday to buster odeholm
Great guy, super innovative
Not a fan of the ripple effect he had on modern metal production as a whole
@stiff raptor im restarting and pretty much forgeting everything i know about mixing atp, where do you recomend i start learning
I offer lessons
Im sure the great people of the nik nocturnal server would share their knowledge with you as well
3am type shit
That guitar tone is wild what is it
Well how much are they
its just fortin nameless with a little bit of eq cleanup
Oh
What does the clean up look like
just a cut a 2.8k and a lpf
i sware to god if you ask another question
Jeez no need to be rude
@stiff raptor
working on cpu buddha remix, Its not finished I still plan on using more instruments
Finished it
Care for some emotional thall anyone? š¤
I feel like the drums maybe to quiet
i feel like my mixing skills are shittier than before
what midi guitar do you use bro
Odin III
noice, I used to use odin 3 but I switched to axure gmp, it does sustained chugs pretty gud
like in this mix for example
Fire
tried to mix ssd4 again
yeh i need some help with achieving i see stars new demons sound
start by recreating a section of one of the songs
itll make it easier if you can A/B yours and theirs
then you can apply that to your music
@grand jasper @ruby jay wanna hear my full mix recreation of a song from End of the World Party
If my computer didnt crash on export I'd have sent it by now
I had this happen to me so many times, every time I was satisfied with a project I saved it, closed reaper, and reopened the project just to make sure I donāt crash it again, because in my system when reaper is left idle too long in the background it is very prone to freeze up or just crash
For me, my computer will randomly blackscreen, as if it's lost all power
and the disk light on my computer flashes once a second, very quick flashes
keyboard lights go off, monitors lose input, all of it
fans stop running
I thought it was an overheating problem where my cpu would shut off to protect itself from heat
but i dont know if that's true
because it does it when it shouldn't be overheating at all
Oh my god, that might be a voltage related technical issue
š what
Idk im dumb, maybe it could be a memory overload, that usually happens to me when there is stuff like steam and epic games launcher and a million browser tabs opened in the background
Idk how that would justify the flashes, thatās just strange
yeah it happened earlier with literally only reaper and discord open
nothing else
the original was super bright and a bit blown out, this has a perfect balance of low end and guitar clarity, the hi hats and china sounds a little too mid heavy that's just a minor nitpick
also is there tambourine layered at every snare hit in the chorus part?
Yes
Tambo could be upped a little more
The hat and china sound a little weird cause i did some EQ matching on them to get them to sound like the originals
But yeah it makes them a bit dark
I do like my guitar tone a little more, even though its just sims of the actual amps that were used
Diezel herbert through a mesa 2000 cab
did you make the snare by yourself or use fop kit
this is some good shit
Ayy ty
man how does sturgis' waveforms look so smooth
Layers of compression and limiting
Limit a tiny bit everywhere you can, at different speeds
Same with compression
I have my drums being compressed in a drum bus, which are going into my instrumental bus (everything except vocals and fx) which goes into my master chain
Master chain has layers of compression as well as a brickwall limiter at the end
Each stage of limiting or compression should just "kiss" the waveform, shaving off pokey transients and such
For real, I have 3 compressors working in tandem with parallel compression on my vox alone, each just kissing the sound lightly. You end with a tone of your own every time. And that goes into the master chain. Ironically JST Gain Reduction Deluxe is one of em.
yes that
jst GR sounds so good on screams
on cleans though i like to use finality
i completely forgot how to mix stuff
this sounds great
guitars are a little dark tho
at least i learnt how to actually mix ssd4
like here i just made the ssd4 louder and added saturation & transient shaper
i finally used real guitar btw
Lets gooooo
Real guitar >>>>> midi any day
@stiff raptor
this sounds really good
i really like the guitar tone
i think the rhythm guitars could come up like a db or two
my ears just wanna hear a lil more
the synth is a little loud too
do you have to painfully assign outputs to each drum everytime you open ssd4?
I'd do it once and save it as a project template
I don't save mix templates anymore, I just save project templates for routing stuff. Mix templates don't work for every song, and I don't get to repeat my previous mixing mistakes again
yeh, when i open ssd4 reaper gives me a dialog window to create 24 tracks and i route drums to them
i also make sends for parallel compression bus and snare reverb & bass guitar sidechain
made the guitar & bass a bit louder
i like how the snare sounds here very much
Bro make a track template
I do that every time i setup drums
I hope ur not routing it manually every timešš
Uhhhhh
pod farm is my fav vst
its really good
i was saying in a different server the other day, everyone chases after the newest greatest guitar plugin like it's gonna fix their tone
neural dsp, thall amp, archetype plugins
but really you just need to know what you're doing
i get insane tones out of podfarm that came out 12+ years ago
and even free plugins like lepou legion get insane tones so easily
especially with all the new NAM models
paid virtual amps are dying
thall amp is mid tbh
it really is
I want to be mick Gordon and also Slipknot did I do good job
Zamn, was thinking about getting it
not worth it
if you have a real guitar, use that
not sure why so many people here use midi guitar
drums also sound kinda weird
That was a real guitarā¦
it is just super highly edited?
Drums are a vst so I guess
No
Dang tight playing ig š
Itās gojira
i dont mean the amp
I spent forever getting 2 bars lol
What
