Anyone wanna start a temp project for fun? I got a noise complaint for screaming too loud and now i cant do them indefinitely

Its gonna be based off of boundaries and varials in drop B, and is basicslly metalcore

What I want is a vocalist (since i do instrumentals by myself), but if others what to contribute then ill be glad to set somehing up

I think the GGD One Kit Wonders are pretty decent for that. In terms of price very okay-ish with great bank for buck

#

got the One Kit Wonder Brutal for like 50-ish bucks, very happy with that. Yes, you do only get one kit, but if you pick the kit that suits the styles best, it may not always be 100% perfect for what you want, but still more than good enough in 9/10 cases for me

@stiff raptor I'm starting the whole mix over. Can you help me out a little bit? I'm super tired of having to use stuff like Parallax to get my bass tone because I genuinely like "traditional" style bass tones more where they, instead of doing all that split band processing, they simply just stuck to using a bass amp so I want to try getting a bass tone like that for a change, but I can't seem to figure out what bass amp I should try to get a Brainworx or Amplitube plugin of and how one would go about dialling that said amp for a metal bass tone.

I'll be honest, reaper is a good one if you don't wanna spend money. while you can record with your amp, and that's how I started too (positive grid amp), investing in an audio interface eventually (doesn't have to be right away) would be a good idea. reaper didn't take me too long to learn though, if you have any questions feel free to ping me or dm me.

shut vault
#

I have the positive grid Spark Go. would it be a good idea to run that versus the boss katana? The katana amp i have has been discontinued and there arent anymore updates for it so it isnt very crisp

modest atlas
#

I think it would depend on what tones you can dial in, and other things like latency.

#

I had a tiny bit of latency when running it through my spark, but I've never tried the katana

the spark latency wasn't that bad though, it didn't stop me or make things much harder

Hi all. I am brand new to attempting to produce metal music. I can't play any instruments, but am hoping I can put together something legible digitally. However, I am really struggling with sourcing ok sounding guitar presets... Are they called tones? Idk... I downloaded modo Bass 2 and the ignite amp, but it sounds awful. Can anyone make any recommendations for some decent free VSTs? I'm not looking to spend money, really, as I'm only kinda playing about and don't have a lot of time to put to music production. I hope this post is ok.

glacial portal
stiff raptor

stiff raptor

I always blend many different kits and oneshots to get a unique kit sound

glacial portal
# stiff raptor Then process your shells and cymbals separately lol

Lol I do I should probably explain it better.

After I process the shells and everything. I work on the overall drum bus. Comp, clipper, and some verb. But then (cuz I use EZD3) sometimes the kit as clear as the rest of the instruments, so I put that exciter on drums and it brings out some of that clarity but it also makes those cymbals harsh af. Depending where in the chain I put it, it'll either make a big difference or a subtle one.

#

Usually like to put it after the clipper cuz it makes a bigger difference but man I hate cymbals.

stiff raptor
#

send your shells to a separate bus with only the exciter

#

Then send the shell bus and cymbal bus to a final drum bus with comp and clip

stiff raptor
#

I did not, i only mixed and mastered it

stiff raptor
#

are you only using one guitar track?

bronze scarab
#

i have a lead and rhythm but i didnt double track them

stiff raptor
#

you first really wanna double track ALL rhythm guitar and hardpan left and right

#

do NOT use a doubler plugin

stiff raptor
#

always double manually by recording a second track

bronze scarab
#

ive been tryna figure out where to pan the doubled rhythm tracks

stiff raptor
#

That's like #1 thing in metal

bronze scarab
#

so thats a massive help

stiff raptor
#

always 100% L and 100% R

#

never anyhting else

#

don't half-pan

#

don't quarter pan

#

always 100% L and R

bronze scarab
#

ive been doing 10% left for rhythm and 10% right for lead💀

stiff raptor
#

oh my god

#

LOL

bronze scarab
#

LOL

#

that makes sense as to why my stuff always sounds jank compared to what i listen to for reference

stiff raptor
#

and dont use any doubler plugins either, always double by re-recording the part exactly how you played it the first time

#

yeah lmao

bronze scarab
#

yeah i never fake doubletracking

#

when i do it anyways💀

#

so with 100% L and R rhythm tracks

#

what should i do for lead guitar?

#

or atleast what would u recommend

stiff raptor
#

depends, lead you can really do whatever

#

some people leave leads single tracked with reverb and delay

#

Buyt

#

If you're doing harmonies, or octave chords, you can hardpan those left and right double tracked

bronze scarab
#

ahhhhh gotcha

#

that makes sense

#

thanks for the tip!

stiff raptor
#

center your mix around your kick and snare

#

they should be the two loudest parts of your mix

bronze scarab
#

i see

frosty juniper
#

ill fix it

stiff raptor
#

lol what

bronze scarab
#

is there a specific decibel that you’d recommend my kick and snare reach respectively?

#

or does it depend

stiff raptor
#

Your song, as a whole, should be hitting -0.0db on the master

#

don't ever clip your channels

#

aka redlining

#

but the loudest parts of your song (on the master channel) should be hitting anywhere from -1db to -0db

#

that's what's called true peak

IUGLEFu

#

MIX WAVE MIKE STRINGER

#

I got it last year and its a good plugin ill give you it for free

stiff raptor
#

Nah i use only free amps

bronze scarab
#

same

#

to varying degrees of success lmao

frosty juniper
#

i also have fortin namless

stiff raptor
#

i mean i use free amps on my pro mixes

#

check my portfolio in my bio

#

everything except sunbreak is using free amps

bronze scarab
#

o shi lemme check that out

frosty juniper
#

if you want it there it is

stiff raptor
#

i wouldnt post pirated plugins if i were you

#

probably against the rules

bronze scarab
#

yeahhhhh

stiff raptor
#

great way to get instabanned lol

bronze scarab
#

yeah lol

frosty juniper
#

its not pirated i bought it myself

stiff raptor
#

@bronze scarab im loading up your files rn

#

gonna do a quick mix using only free plugs

bronze scarab
#

sharing it is inherently piracy though lol

stiff raptor
#

yep

bronze scarab
#

sick >:D

frosty juniper
#

oof im sorry

stiff raptor
#

bpm?

bronze scarab
#

120bpm

stiff raptor
#

cool

frosty juniper
#

wait where did you send it

bronze scarab
frosty juniper
#

where are the files?

bronze scarab
#

the drive link I sent up there

frosty juniper
#

thanks

stiff raptor
#

Did you send the drum midi

#

Or no

bronze scarab
#

Oh lemme get on that

#

Forgot abt that lol

stiff raptor
#

Ur good

bronze scarab
#

Listening through the samples on your website rn, all this is legit amazing

#

Can see you’ve definitely mastered your craft

stiff raptor
#

Thanks!

#

Yeah ive been at it since i was like 11

frosty juniper
#

im not a master at this im just bored

bronze scarab
#

Daaaaamn

frosty juniper
#

haha

bronze scarab
#

I’ll just say, I’m between bands right now but once I’m back in a project I’ll definitely look your way for mixing and mastering

stiff raptor
#

Dude yessir

bronze scarab
#

Yeah brother🤘

stiff raptor
#

I offer competitive rates entirely based on projects

#

So i won't charge you like a grand for one song because that's what i charge someone else for

#

it's entirely dependent on y'alls budget and what you want out of it

bronze scarab
#

That’s great! I definitely appreciate that

stiff raptor
#

Also your stems, they're not arranged at all so i'll just throw a few together in what seems to work lol

bronze scarab
#

Haha yeah my project files are rough

#

ive never exported to midi before so if theres any issues lmk

#

also im exporting the DIs in a more organized way atm

stiff raptor
#

Ok sick

bronze scarab
#

itll just be another 5 or so minutes >:)

#

@stiff raptor here u go, these should be way easier to work with

stiff raptor
#

ok fire

#

the midi thing btw is a blank file

bronze scarab
#

o

stiff raptor
#

ok sick

stiff raptor
#

@bronze scarab why is the kick on 3 different midi lanes

#

LOL

#

@bronze scarab also your mixes may be quiet cause most of your drums are only at half velocity

#

that means you're getting the less impactful hits

bronze scarab
#

it was too quiet so i doubled it up💀 LOL

stiff raptor
#

Bro 😭

stiff raptor
#

turn up the velocity

#

yes

bronze scarab
#

omg

stiff raptor
bronze scarab
#

that makes sense😭

stiff raptor
#

this circled bit

#

means that you're only hitting half as hard

#

and this is AFTER me turning them all up

#

dont ever double up samples on the same kit unless you know what you're doing lol

bronze scarab
#

ohhh yeah i usually do that for like cymbals and shit for variety, im very poorly experienced with drum programming haha

bronze scarab
stiff raptor
#

you dont need a program for that

#

most reputable daws have a humanize button

#

FL has that

bronze scarab
#

OH??

stiff raptor
#

havent used FL in a fat minute but im pretty sure its CTRL + H

#

its in the edit menu

bronze scarab
#

oh damn

#

lemme check real quick

stiff raptor
#

reaper's looks like this

bronze scarab
#

O damn

#

Ive thought about using reaper before, i remember looking into it once and being super intimidated by the UI lmao

stiff raptor
#

you only need to humanize by like 2-6%

#

anything higher just sounds like a bad drummer

bronze scarab
#

LOL i see

stiff raptor
#

its accurate ngl

#

i used to use fl for like 5 years ish

#

but reaper is much better

bronze scarab
#

ive heard it is yeah

stiff raptor
#

especially tracking real isntruments

bronze scarab
#

same here with FL, about 5 years for me too

stiff raptor
#

ive been producing for about 10 now

bronze scarab
stiff raptor
#

lol yep

#

Also random thing

#

your DI is pretty dark, it's lacking some high end. you probably want some new strings on your guitar

#

but it could be a couple other things causing that issue

bronze scarab
#

I definitely do, Ive got a few packs i can throw on soon cuz the gauge i have on atm is way too thick for the guitar at its age

stiff raptor
#

your bass di too is super muffled

#

It's got no high end at all

#

not sure what happened there

#

its like 25db too quiet overall, and sounds super muffled

bronze scarab
#

yeah, really not sure what the deal with my bass is

stiff raptor
#

i tried to salvage it but its almost unusable

bronze scarab
#

yeah its really not good

stiff raptor
#

here's something more in the vein of what you should be aiming for

#

guitars are hardpanned left and right

#

drums are mostly max velocity

#

the guitar needs some work because there's only so much you can do with a bad di

#

Same with the bass

bronze scarab
#

yeah, the DIs really need some work

#

I think i figured out my bass DIs issue, for the guitar I'll just replace the strings and work from there

#

just curious what amp sim did you use here?

stiff raptor
#

Im using lepou free amps

#

LeGion is what i mostly use

#

good overall sound

#

pair it with a good IR and you're golden

#

Ir matters more than amp imo

bronze scarab
#

Yeah the IR impacts the sound a shit ton

#

Thanks a million for the tips! been working really in the dark since I started 6 months ago lmao

stiff raptor
#

LOL

bronze scarab
#

my first ever mix from june last year is absolutely rancid lmao

#

headphone warning

stiff raptor
#

😭 omg

#

the clipping 😭

bronze scarab
#

theres no effects on that guitar😭

#

that is solely clipping😭

stiff raptor
#

bro 😭

bronze scarab
#

it was ROUGH

modest atlas
#

if yall got any advice

#

i need it lol

#

i absolutely suck at mixing raw drums

#

the whole mix is kinda ass 😭 if anyone knows what can help lmk

bronze scarab
bronze scarab
# modest atlas

im not a great ear for this kinda stuff but I think the drums are good

#

overall it sounds a little crowded i think is a good word to describe it? unless thats the vision in which case its great

modest atlas
#

thanks! the song im mixing in that specific part it should sound crowded, glad it came across that way lol

#

this is a less crowded part

bronze scarab
#

yeah i think in general this sounds really good

stiff raptor
stiff raptor
# modest atlas

drums need to come up like 2db, or guitar needs to come down 2db

#

bass seems to be lacking low end

#

and guitar is a little scratchy, maybe cut a little 6-8k so it plays better at higher volumes without ear fatigue

stiff raptor
#

on the drums specifically

#

the kick and snare should really be the center of the mix, the main rhythmic elements that the rest of the song (besides vocals) will be "pumping" to

#

So possible sidechain your guitar bus to your kick and snare (just by like 1db, moreso snare)

#

and definitely sidechain your bass to your kick (i like to take out about -4db with a pretty fast release so it doesn't stay down too long

#

that second one sounds really good though

#

if you have room mics, definitely turn them way up as well

pliant tree
#

tf is wrong with this export wait

#

1 2 or 3

#

just different master settings

#

i dont even hear a difference idk i dont think it matters

modest atlas
#

thanks for all the feedback

glacial portal
stiff raptor
#

i recreated the drums from Number[s] to the best of my ability

#

not perfect but really close

#

this is the first half of the song i couldnt be bothered to place all the midis lol

solemn briar
#

hi, I am trying to make music (the first time), and I am using VSTs as I don't have a guitar... 90% of my issues are just battling with the software, as I can't even get one simple chord repeatedly strummed to sound right, I am using shreddage 3 free with its presets... I have watched many tutorials telling me how to manipulate the notes but it always ends up very choppy and unnatural, I just want chords to sound right xD anyone who had a similar problem, how did you resolve it?

#

mutes usually sound bearable in riffs, but sustained chords just aren't it

stiff raptor
#

No guitar plugin will EVER sound great doing chords

#

Before you ever get into production, either produce music without a guitar (so electronic or other music) or just buy a guitar

#

My opinion is kinda controversial but really, just save up and buy a cheapo guitar on marketplace for like $100

#

Much much much better investment than a plugin

#

If you want more specific advice feel free to dm me

stiff raptor
#

i wrote a thing

pliant tree
#

chat does anyone else use ggd?

#

some samples just get cut off when playing it back or exporting

#

the crash

pliant tree
#

ok its fine while playing back but exporting it is broken

#

works fine on low cpu scaling? weird

frosty juniper
pliant tree
#

nvm its stil lhappening the next day, low scaling

#

what the fuck is tis

calm trout
#

Been a while but I think when I had a similar problem in the past I ended up turning off offline render or whatever it's called

pliant tree
#

in kontakt settings?

#

only close thing i can find

frosty juniper
pliant tree
#

i put standard and i dont think its muting anymore? ill keep working like this and see if i notice it again, and yeah i already increased max voices

calm trout
#

I'm thinking in the daw but this was years ago idek which daw it was - googling now idk if fl has the option

#

I assume u are multi outputting ggd so printing to audio in the session would be a pain in the ass?

pliant tree
#

well something changed and i think its fixed

calm trout
#

Oh fuck yea

pliant tree
#

nvm 15 lol yea

calm trout
frosty juniper

pliant tree
stiff raptor
#

it sounds like there's a lot of clipping

#

the guitar sounds pretty thin

#

the vocals sound like a background element

#

and the bass is nonexistent

#

that tom section is clipping pretty badly

#

drums are way too loud

#

guitar is lacking any body

naive fiber
stiff raptor
#

The arrangement is great

#

The mixing def needs some work

frosty juniper
stiff raptor
#

It's being slammed and limited really hard still

#

Whats up with the vocals? They sound like they were recorded on a phone?

stiff raptor
#

the guitar sounds even quiter

#

What's going on with this mix lol

#

the drum eq is better

#

but the vocals, guitar, and bass need alot of work still

#

wanna send me the stems and i can try?

green wharf

@frosty juniper What does your processing look like

pliant tree

idk why i did this

ruby jay
calm trout
#

what are u using for percussion in the intro??

ruby jay

damage 2

#

its a kontakt library

calm trout

ngl i didnt know there was a damage 2

i use damage 1 on everything

stiff raptor

finally I can justify not using a real guitar

stiff raptor

😭😭

all midi that sounds like a very bendable rule

HOW YOU GET DA NOISES

#

@modest atlas

stiff raptor

Pitch shifting lol

green wharf
#

i bought odeholm drums with my first paycheck

stiff raptor
#

curious to hear how far you got

frosty juniper
#

do you want me to send the project file?

stiff raptor
#

ehh raw stems is better

#

sharing project files is a headache waiting to happen

frosty juniper
#

yeah thats what i mean

stiff raptor
#

yeah send the unprocessed stems

#

@frosty juniper do you know what the vocals were recorded on

frosty juniper
#

an ipad

stiff raptor
#

oh god what 😭

#

Why

frosty juniper
#

haha'

#

i diddnt have much at the time but i made them work

stiff raptor
#

are they your vocals?

frosty juniper
#

no their my friends but i did everything else

stiff raptor
#

she sounds like the Galantis vocalist

stiff raptor
frosty juniper
#

yeah

stiff raptor
#

@frosty juniper You still gonna send the stems?

#

im curious what i could do with that mix

stiff raptor
#

Alright ill download these tonight

proven falcon
#

I feel confident in my drum mix, but I want to gather feedback to see if it's up to snuff. Wait 10 seconds (or skip to that point) on the drum-only track to hear the drums

stiff raptor
#

if youre trying to do snarebombs, do it only like once every few measures, and have a reverse-reverb going into it

#

kick could have a bit more low end oomph too

#

yeah the snare in that section is ridiculously loud

proven falcon
stiff raptor
#

Wdym?

proven falcon
# stiff raptor Wdym?

I was aiming to test all the shells and cymbals within 8 measures for mixing purposes, as well as a few articulations and drum grooves (which is why that out-of-place blast beat exists)

stiff raptor
#

Oh gotcha

#

so its not part of the song lol

proven falcon
#

Yeah lmao

stiff raptor
#

yeah i was like

#

"thats an.. interesting creative choice"

stiff raptor
#

here's something you should be aiming for

#

For one, definitely put your drums on separate tracks so they don't smash the mix fighting for volume

#

second, your guitar is too high gain for the song and it ends up being really treble-heavy and clashing with the piano

#

i would definitely look into re-recording the vocals into a mic

#

and re-recording the guitar and bass

#

alot of the takes sound pretty weird or have alot of messups in them

#

Obviously you do what you want with your song, this is just my general advice ;)

white shell
#

I’m trying to install nuclear bass into reaper but it’s not showing up for whatever reason

#

Same with Odeholm drums

#

I’m mad confused

#

I know I gotta install the kontakt player I did that but now what

ruby jay
green wharf
stiff raptor
#

def pretty smashed

#

and not sure about those vocals LOL

#

composition is fire

proven falcon
#

2nd mix, toned down the compression a bit, improved tom sample tuning, and spent time trying to balance the kick, snare, and toms—the kick's smack is a bit messed up, I didn't have time to fix that

This mix might have done more harm than good, but I'm gathering feedback as with last time

#

The same 10-second quirk for the drums-only track applies here

I'd work on having them not so transient heavy

#

And focus on more clarity, the mix is too dark overall

stiff raptor
#

Terrible for tracking instruments

#

Reaper is the way

pliant tree
#

iirc u have to pay for every update too

#

at least thats what ive been told

stiff raptor
#

Ewww

pliant tree
#

yea i dont get it 😭 i didnt believe it when they told me about it

frosty juniper
stiff raptor
#

i set my reaper midi editor to have the exact mechanics as the FL midi editor (arguably the best of any daw)

#

so, the default keybinds may suck, but you can quite literally change any aspect about it

#

any keybind, any action, etc

#

reaper beats every daw in terms of flexiblity and customizability

frosty juniper
#

i like pro tools the most but i still use ableton because of pro tools compexity

stiff raptor
#

pro tools is buggy and unreliable (not to mention the predatory business tactics)

#

ableton is good, mostly good for live tracks and sound design

frosty juniper
#

i dont have a problem with pro tools

stiff raptor

stiff raptor
#

if you really want sound design get bitwig

#

or reaper for that matter

#

just watch the video, trust

frosty juniper
#

i just like the way pro tools works live

stiff raptor
#

Its alright

frosty juniper
#

it has its own audio console

stiff raptor
#

most daws have that

frosty juniper
#

no like avid has a physical live audio console

#

that works with pro tools and venue\

stiff raptor
#

it's not good for the average user

#

and those consols work with any daw that accepts midi control

#

only massive studios even have the budget to buy consoles like that anyway

frosty juniper
#

nah not really!

#

you can find pretty cheap ones

stiff raptor
#

🤨

#

no thanks

stiff raptor
frosty juniper
#

i am

#

yeah pro tools just works better for me

#

i write somthing, i can mix it, master it, and do it live, all with 1 daw

#

its just soo much better

stiff raptor
#

you can do that in any daw 😭

#

ive been producing 10 years now and ive done all of that in reaper

#

my band uses reaper for mixing, mastering, and live tracks
