Hi guys! First time ever recording after playing guitar for about 6 months. I managed to add some drums and some bass aswell but I think the mix is quite off. What should I do different, any tips or tricks to make it sound more "refined". Thanks!

guys, is there a way to take a bass tab, download it and then convert it into midi? or something like this, i trying to make a virtual bass line but it's been SO FUCKING HARD since i'm playing fast and it always don't sound like it should djasdaspdokaspdkaspd 😭

tabs will be downloaded as notes, you just need to set articulations and force string manually

#

Like honestly it feels like a OKW Metal 2.0

#

Not that that's a bad thing because I think it sounds better than Metal but honestly, if you have the other OKWs, you can honestly skip this one.

ruby jay
glacial portal
#

IF that is you own all the previous metal focused GGD libraries.

ruby jay
#

metal for the kick, pop punk for the snare and agressive rock for the rooms

#

there are some unique cymbals that are not in any of the ggd libraries in OKW brutal but nothing that I would pay for imo

glacial portal
#

Ppl have said it for a long time but I think GGD is at a point where they need their own launcher.

#

Or at least now I think they've reached that point.

ruby jay
#

that would be great, but kontakt is not too much of an issue either for me, since I am used to using it so much

#

but all the GGD drum sample libraries in a single plugin in the form of expansion packs like ezdrummer would be awesome

glacial portal
#

Indeed.

#

Or like ML Drums.

#

Here's what I feel like is happening.

#

Since GGD is a young company compared to say Steven Slate or Toontrack, coming up around 2017 or 2018, I feel they made the same mistake early Toontrack made.

#

Where they made a "general" kit and delved into the specific kit sounds later.

#

And the despite the later kits sonically being superior, people were still using the older kits. But Toontrack has the advantage that the other kits are recorded at different studios with different engineers behind them. With GGD its just Nolly doing most of the leg work.

#

Idk @ruby jay what's your opinion on that.

# modest atlas Thoughts on krimh drums free?

I think they are great, I don't like that snare though, that's why I am using the ML Drums free snare. Other than that I normally combine the kick with a sample to make it more fitting for more processed sounding drums, I like that more

proper galleon
#

i liked the snare better than the P5 snare

#

but now i have the brootal kit so i can just use that snare

glacial portal
modest atlas
#

Yeah

#

I do not like the kick on ml drums free. It ruined the sound of my mixes and that's why I looked into krimh

#

Although it could just be the result of amateur mixing

glacial portal
# modest atlas Yeah

Compared to ML Drums free where you have control over almost everything minus a few things here and there, and upgrading ML Drums is VERY inexpensive compared to Krimh Drums which is almost as much as EZDrummer 2 was back in the day (basically 130 bucks).

Krimh Drums is EXTREMELY powerful, however if your looking for drums on a budget, I highly recommend ML Drums or the One Kit Wonders by GGD.

modest atlas
#

Yeah I might go for one kit wonders

#

I love the snare

#

Sounds like knocked loose

glacial portal
# modest atlas Sounds like knocked loose

The new brutal one? Yeah. Honestly because I already have the metal kit, I will be skipping brutal simply because metal does what brutal does. Brutal is sonically better though.

proper galleon
#

i basically bought brutal for the snare

#

hate the kick & toms they sound way too processed, cymbals sound killer in a mix tho so i use the P5 kick + toms and brutal snare + cymbs

So, I don't know the first thing about music production. I'm a singer/songwriter who can play drums at an ok level (but not good enough for the latest song I wrote), but I don't play guitar or piano. All my music buddies around me irl are worship/blues/country type guys and this song is a modern metalcore song. I think this one is killer, but I have no idea how to bring it to life.

ruby jay
# atomic ruin So, I don't know the first thing about music production. I'm a singer/songwriter...

If you have a decent PC, Learn how to use the reaper DAW, and then just to start learning midi programming get some nice free instruments like Vital synth, electric guitar instruments like ample bass, sforzando metal gtx by unreal instruments, a nice acoustic guitar vst like ample M free, if you want to learn routing instruments individual faders you can learn how to use a sample player called kontakt player, and use some kontakt sample libraries like shreddage precision bass and stratus for electric guitar, and use ML drums free as they sound pretty cool for free instruments

#

Foe some free effect plugins, Novo EQ is nice one to start with, there are great free compressors, exciters, clippers and limiter built in reaper itself, but if you want nice emulations of real mixing gear, Analog Obsession has some pretty cool plugins of that kind. For a free guitar amp you can use ML Sound Amped roots and free bass amp like Bass grinder by audio assault

Hello! When in songs the left and right guitar switches, then the audio levels stay fairly the same on the guitars, even when theyre double tracked, but when I do it, then the levels are way off, why is that? Heres the example about what I mean and a screenshot.

frosty juniper
#

so its double the volume

#

use a limiter or something

#

or just manually adjust the volume

wise raven
#

And also probably because the guitars are not 100% left or right it seems which kinda overlap them in the middle a bit

#

And increase the volume slightly more

#

And yea either a limiter or a compressor can help with that volume difference

#

But i'd use a compressor as its not entirely cuting the signal above the threshold point

# frosty juniper Looking into purchasing a virtual drum kit plug in and I'm torn between Get Good...

Here's a list:

Bogren Digital - These are very high quality kits however they are pretty pricey for what they offer. Krimh is 133 USD which is a lot. Trivium is cheaper 100 USD, which isn't bad but you can't swap kit pieces which is disappointing. With Krimh, you're limited on swappable kit pieces. That said the plugin gives stuff inside the plugin to mix the drums however you see fit.

Mixwave - They can get pricey in a hurry but right now they're doing a 30% off sale. You got big name kits like Brooks Wackerman (A7X), Mario Duplantier (Gojira) and Austin Archery (Lorna Shore). They range anywhere from 100 bucks to 190, and each kit is different. You're limited on swappable kit pieces, but these are probably the most "mix-ready" kits in the game if that's the route you wanna go. They have limited drum mixing stuff, but you can make them completely raw and mix them yourself. It's also really light on CPU.

Getgood Drums - If you do go the route of the cheaper One Kit Wonders, just be aware you won't be able to pan your kits like you can with their bigger kits which can suck. You can turn off the processing though to mix them yourself. Should you get the bigger kits, you'll get a LOT with them. Including the ability to switch out pieces of the kit, and the turbo can come in handy. Overall if you're looking for the most "bang for your buck", GGD is probably the best.

Toontrack - EzD3's expansion packs you can mix and match alone make it tempting. However the bandmate feature can make a drum pattern for you when you import your guitar riff, and then you can edit the midi for it inside EZD! Not as mix ready but if you like mixing then this is for you. Only issue, base is 230 USD. Expansions are 90.

ML Drums - The first kit is FREE. However you can mix the kit in the plugin and have different tunings! The expansions are only 45 USD too which are cheaper than EZD's and you can mix and match and doesn't use Kontakt! Very affordable and somewhat mix ready.

I usually use subtractive EQ to clean it up. Sometimes I'll use EQ to boost some frequencies but often I'll use an exciter on the specific frequency I want to enhance the sound and then kick in the harmonic circuit to add some sauce.

# minor flame holy shit

Hey man I made all the mistakes with music production.

I'm not sure what your budget is, or your long term goals with music production.

As far as I see with Urgitone. The most useful thing you can do is use the kick/snare samples for layering inside the free version Trigger 2.

As I listen to them. I think most of their stuff needs heavy editing.

If you need a list of absolute safe bets for your upcoming black friday... here....

-Fabfilter Bundle, or at least Pro Q3/ProMB (transparent plugins)
-Soothe 2 (everyone uses this)
-Nueral DSP Amp Sims (Pick tone to taste. I reach for Gojira X and Plini X often)
-GGD Cabs (pick to taste)
-UAD or Waves plugin bundles for color enhancement. At the least, get SSL/API eq's/compressors. Bundles. (These are used a ton in your favorite records.)
-Trigger 2 (Drum shaping and layering ... also free)
GGD, Toontrack, or Drumforge Drums.

Below is a list of free goodies.
-Vital (most user friendly, highest quality, free synthesizer) I learned how to use synthesis with this.
-Nova eq (In case you cannot afford fabfilters pro q 3)

Hardware.

Sound is determined by your room. Buying really good openback headphones, and then dampening your room for outside noise is always going to be cheaper and more accurate than having monitors in an improperly treated room.

I favor spending the money on a really good audio interface, and headphones first. Learning on a balanced system is important. Also having a system you can safely take with you when you move frim place to place, is important.

It truely sucks to have studio equipment you cant use because something happens and you're stuck in a apartment, and cant bother your neighbors.

Closed back headphones will make everything feel smaller, but if you are tight on money and need the isolation, those will get the job done.

Reccomended brands for headphones.

Seinheisser (650 series and up)
Beyerdynamics (1770 series and up) ((my personal choice is the DT 1990's)

Dampening a room is easy. Sealing from the outside noise is very hard and expensive. The biggest problems are always doors, and windows from street noise. With windows comes ventilation problems.

I used spring loaded curtain rods from amazon and a sound dampening blankets from US cargo control. Again, if you move from place to place, Easy dissasemble and reassemble. Doesnt damage the apartment. And machine washable.

Theres are a bunch of tips. But the general Idea is "What is really safe to do so I don't have to spend moeny all over again?"

Do your research. If you're short on cash... google "Free plugin alternative for (insert plugin name here"

#

Prioritize.

Good audio interface and headphones first.

Then plugins.

minor flame
alpine sandal
#

xD

minor flame
#

Gonna check it out a bit (also completely forgot about black friday coming up)

alpine sandal
#

Yeah man. Get a list and start working overtime. xD

I like premium audio interfaces so I can run more plugins, sounds better, and records better. Especially important if you're a guitarist/bassist. (This means a good computer too)

I find the entry level stuff like the Scarlett interfaces from guitar always breaks within 3 years... and sounds a bit cold. I've had 2 break on me. And for that, I could have had a nicer interface that never broke. lol.

Can't speak for other entry level interfaces cause I never tried them. I could be wrong about them.

Most interfaces you need something called a DI, box to "Clean" the signal. I had a friend who had a Radial Engineering DI box. Sounded amazing. Only important if you are planning to record guitar and bass.

Otherwise you're looking for chipset power to drive your audio.

But

Depends what your goal is.

Try to find out if you just want "A better sound for writing music":

or if you want to "Chase the best sound to the bitter end"

Cause that's the difference between making a decent demo, or making final production. Two very different quests.

Demo's are cheap. Slap a neural dsp amp sim, Parallax for bass tone, drum sampler, closed back headphones (Like Beyer Dynamics DT 770 pro's), and use the built in plugins in a Daw. There you go.

.... but that sweet buttery sound can be so inspiring to sink your hot knife ears into. xD Tears and wallet aside.

I got into production because I didn't want to pay a producer to do it every time I wanted to put something out. I wanted to use the money to buy studio gear, and keep that with me forever.

Non re occurring finances. A few years of learning production is good.

I've spent 20k on useless gear and acoustic treatment.. and drummed on the street when I was 15 to pay for it. Had to throw alot of it away when I moved. I fucked up XDDDDD

If I were to do production all over again.... I'd hire multiple instructors for private lessons. I would pay for advice. Sourcing good information is so important. Jesse Cannon is my favorite guy. Super clear, articulate, and accurate. A great explainer. I'd subscribe to URM academy just to listen to him. Sadly he doesn't have more production videos online. Just a few on mixing/mastering.

Badabing bada boom. Hope this save's you years of grief. xD

minor flame
# alpine sandal Yeah man. Get a list and start working overtime. xD I like premium audio interf...

Yeah, URM is the route I´m thinking about going because it just seems like the best combination of decent price and all the resources and people involved that I´d love to learn from.

As of now I´d just like to get a better understanding of tone and writing, which is hard/kinda pointless to do, without the proper plugins (but also without the proper equipment, but as of now I think that´s fine)

alpine sandal
#

Playing around with eq before an amp really helped me understand tone.

Writing is a whole different animal.

minor flame
#

Yeah, absolutely. One thing after the other. Never dabbled too much in writing because...what´s the matter if you lack the skills to realize it.

#

best idea aint worth shit if you cant do it justice

alpine sandal
#

It takes a long time to fully run the lap of realizing what things can turn out to be, and what the limitations are.

#

In my experience.

Best monitoring first.

Then best source sounds you can. The better the source, the less production you have to deal with. Getting the most mileage out of your amps/cabs, and your drums.

Then production to push everything in its slot.

#

Lots of people sit and, guess what is changing.

#

good monitoring, makes it really fucking obviouse.

#

actually

#

Go to a HI-FI audio store (People that make 100k sound setups) and just sit in a room and demo stuff. Pretend to shop for headphones or speakers.

That was the moment that did it for me.

#

Pretend to be some fuckin rich kid and get a taste of a good room, and good headphones.

You'll see exactly what I am talking about.

minor flame
#

while on the topic, any hints for a good free DI box vst?

alpine sandal
#

I personally havent seen anything free. I just haven't looked. Cheapest I've seen is a plugin called DI FIX, but I still find DI box's to make the most audible difference.

I'm not too familiar with the D.I. box market. But lucky for you. It's hardware. Hardware goes great on the used market. Find someone who is quitting guitar and nab it off them.

As dark as this next piece of advice sounds. When musicians go through financial trouble and begin to sell gear to change directions... thats where you get a really good deal.

#

I think the ones to look for are Radial engineering, coutryman, and baby lamb audio?

Again. Not sure whats out there.

Is your guitar single coil? Sounds similar to my strat with a DS-1 and Marshall sim. Idk what your using but if it's a single coil, I usually go bass and treble up around eight or nine, with mine it makes it sound more full. Mids about 4. Double track, pan, and bass. pliant tree

just like

noise gate - amp - cab sim - eq

#

if i want any effects on guitar i will do it with other software inside FL studio

past moon
#

amp gain? that could be why it sounds wierd. Try adding a pedal right after noise gate or getting a physical pedal. Turn amp gain all the way down and let the pedal do its thing. I'm not familiar with FL studio so can't help you much sadly.

pliant tree
#

tbh i dont even know what pedals are for 😭

#

i have this before my amp thats it idk if thats what u mean

past moon
#

Pedals basically change the sound going into your amp. For example a distortion pedal distorts the signal, a delay pedal makes it all echoey, reverb makes it very sustainy, ect

#

I'm guessing your not that familiar with recording then?

pliant tree
pliant tree
#

i dont have stems for it so

I would really just do a lot of research and experimentation then. Watch some Spectre Sound Studios videos, most likely he will have an answer to really any question you have. (Although Glenn is a bit of an asshole so be aware of that.) Experiment with different amps and stuff, screenshot settings you like and stuff like that. anyone got tips on getting vocal tracks out of a song for a cover version? Tried AI splitters, but they just shit the bed with screams or vocal effects, playing over the original either sounds off (may be my tone, but I cant see that working either way) or is so toned down that the vocals are barely audible, any advice would be appreciated

Any suggestions?

For mixing and mastering, what is the general process with steps to cover most of the basics?

#

Like, other than getting the volume right, EQing

You know what I just realized. GGD always features an artist that best fits the OKW they are releasing (minus Architects cuz I mean...it says it on the tin)

Modern Fusion - Plini
Aggressive Rock - Caleb Shomo
Metal - Matt Heafy
Classic Rock - Jared James Nicols
Pop Punk - Neil Westfall
Dry and Funky - Mark Lettieri
Brutal - Issac Hale
Nu Metal - Mike Stringer

Well I was writing that you'll need to change the synth sound, but in that moment you've changed it already xD Good job, sounds sick, I like ^^

#

Something with the chugs at 0:38 is different compared to the original. But I can't exactly describe what it is.

The chugs in the original use real guitar di, my version is made with vst guitars only
