I'm lvl 18 in club reward and was struggling to get a role. Tried hunting,stealing and some story missions... It was tough these two week but last night I recieved 10gold for my 2step verification. As soon as I got the gold I bought bounty hunting role and caught 2 legendary and 3 normal.
It was really rough without any role to earn money but with just bounty hunter role a lot better now.

I’ve not lost a bottle to bullets yet. You can always stop and deal with them- they’re after you not the wagon, or just deal with them quicker on the trail. It’s entirely possible to run the role effectively and make more than Trader.
I dont loose to many bottles to the actual bullets but when i have to kill them i break hard and rush to destination

Honestly gold isn’t that hard to grind for. I’m level 122 and I’ve never spent real money on the game. If you don’t have a lot of time to grind and really want the roles and outlaw past quickly you can get it - but if you have time to grind in the game and play with friends you should just do that imo and not spend real money
