Mausers aren’t that bad. They have pretty good accuracy even when dual wielded, making them a good choice for headshots. Especially with Gunslingers Choice. However the Semi Auto outperforms the Mauser with GSC.
Double Action is basically a budget Semi Auto, but allows for twice as much ammo in the reserves.

I feel like many guns in this game really vary on performance dependant on your player card loadout.

They have a quick recoil bloom shrink of 0.80 seconds when dual wielded, which is about 0.40 seconds faster than all the revolvers besides the Double Action, where it’s only 0.90 seconds faster.
And with Gunslingers Choice it speeds that up to 0.50 seconds, or half a second.
Semi Auto is the same, it gets 0.50 second recoil Shrink, but also gets a smaller recoil bloom size, and so does the Double Action Revolver. Thing is- the Double Action reloads over twice as slowly compared to the Semi Auto.
They all vary pretty well. I have all their stats on my spreadsheet in the pins

Well the idea is they’re balanced for certain uses. Pistols have great accuracy, and rate of fire. Making them great for headshots and close range spam fire which can out dps other weapons in close range, especially with ability cards taken into consideration. But they have halved ammo reserves to keep them in check

GSC gives you perfect accuracy when you aim, and when you aim while moving. It also speeds up the bloom shrink after firing (recoil Shrink/bloom).
It has a unique effect on the Semi Auto Pistol and Double Action Revolver, where not only does it do what I listed above, but also makes their recoil bloom size smaller. The sped up recoil Shrink, along with a smaller bloom size makes them one of the 3 most accurate sidearms in the game with GSC, the others being Double Action Revolvers (debatably even more accurate) and the Volcanic Pistol (which doesn’t need GSC to be incredibly accurate)
And also increases the damage a little while dual wielding

Ive had prior experience with them on RDR1 but this don't come close to them.
-Pros Pretty damm fast .. if you're not going for headshots .. its a rapid three shot kill on NPCs .. reload speed is ofcourse rapid along with it ... its actually got a pretty decent range on it too which surprised me.
-Cons... Dreadful ammo consumption. Durability drops pretty fast too for its design . Sounds like someone shot a golf ball out of a large pan flute.
Im awaiting to try these in PvP and see how well they fare

If he doesn’t have access to Collector, which I assume he doesn’t since he’s new and won’t have the gold yet, do missions with him to speed it up. Bounty Hunter is great for this as you get the xp for completing bounties be it in freeroam or legendary— which is even more rewarding, and the xp from killing enemies.
Just do back to back freeroam bounties for as long as you want, and do Legendary bounties as soon as they become available again (48 minute wait between them)
You can also have him tag along on Trader deliveries. That’s a pretty easy way of getting xp and cash for minimal effort

@buoyant sluice one way is to do like what you typed out. Story and bootlegger. But sometimes there's random moonshiner events in free roam that pop up if you're lucky/nearby (like take out a roadblock or sabotage a rival's still)
doing those brings the prices down as well
the moonshiner free roam mission types are exactly the same as approaching Maggie and undergoing one.
