Yes, two best places to shoot larger animals is the head or the butt. Those places tend to save the pelts.

I've never found a correlation between shot placement and pelt quality in the hundreds of animals I've hunted and turned in. The only difference i noticed was going from a repeater to a bolt action rifle, didn't matter where it hit with the bolt action it drops anything in one shot (but big predators like bears you should aim for the head because anything less won't be a one shot kill) and the pelt stays perfect. With small stuff you need the varmint rifle to get perfects. From my experience it doesn't matter where you shoot, only what you are shooting with
And even with a bolt action, more than one shot will guaranteed drop the quality of the pelt

The thing is when I shot it in the ass, it was only a white marker so I thought for sure it would go down a star or two... I mean the deer kept running, it wasnt even wounded. Luckily my 2nd shot was clean; think I lucked out.

Ammo type makes no difference. Just a 1 shot kill with a bolt action or better. Even if the animal bleeds out, as long as it only took one shot to kill it the quality won't drop, regardless of where the shot hit

Just shot a 3 star deer with a nearly brand new Carcano. Shot randomly into rear area of hind quarters. It bled to death and and it had 2 stars. A star was dropped.
I think bleeding to death may have a random possaable drop to the stars.

Last time I'm gonna say it: shot placement does NOT affect pelt quality
It affects the effectiveness of the shot itself only, so if the shot is poorly placed the animal won't die and the pelt will degrade
use a bolt action rifle if you're not using the gun we've all said multiple times and you're still not getting perfects that's on you and your inability to follow clear direction
if you intend to hunt for the trader role buy a bolt action rifle and a varmint rifle as these are the only 2 guns that will 100% maintain perfect pelts

I do not understand why a type of gun matters and not hit location. I use the Rollerback or the Carcano and head shots allways keeps stars. Rear shots will most likely keep stars with these rifles.
You had mentioned to use a "Bolt action rifle or better" Both of those are better rifles for hunting.

there are some animals that can only give a perfect pelt when shot with repeaters (ex. foxes, coyotes)
birds are whack for exactly that reason, I have a dedicated build for gaining max stacks of flight feathers in a single volley and 1-shotting every bird I hit
but some birds when you inspect with Q will say "ACKSHUALLY, small game arrows lmao pleb get rekt nerd"
and then there's a small handful of animals that will only give a perfect pelt if they're shot with a Long scoped rifle
(and they have to be at 3* for the perfect pelt but every1 here knows that so excuse me xd)
