I don't think it is directly related to the number of players. It is a networking issue related to the p2p nature of their architecture. Obviously, the more players in a session the more pronounced the networking issues become, but is not directly tied to it.

@muted lagoon I play almost exclusively in solo lobbies or lobbies with just a few friends and the number and type of animals is vastly increased. Not just animals, but random encounters as well

I think the reason pc is less affected is that the average pc that the game selects as temporary host in any given session is way beefier than your average console.

And spawns and npc/animal control are definitely controlled by a peer and not server side. You can easily tell when the game changes host from one player to another.

There's an easy way to see it in action. Next time you're riding somewhere far with a friend (say a distant trader sale), have some take the lead for a while. That player will typically be controlling spawns/npc control. Then change the leading player and you'll be able to tell when the control changes from one player to the other. Some NPCs may vanish, others may appear out of nowhere and almost all of them will jerk their position.

you tipically get disconnected when you can't handle a host handoff

for whatever reason - could be the previous host fault

to fix spawns, they would need to force hosts to actually make them in time instead of what I think is happening. Hosts handles the most critical stuff first (controlling whatever is already spawned) and once that is done, if there's time, it will start spawn cycles.

If you force the hosts to actually get to the spawns, the amount of hosts that couldn't handle doing it in time would increase exponentially

This is of course a lot of conjecture based on what we have observed from both GTAO and RDO and the way spawning works

The reason, I think, that player count affects spawns, is that the more players are in a session the more entities the host needs to control before it gets to spawn new stuff and it gets to a point where its just tied up handling what's already in the world
