I only do the generic free roam login if I know I am in Big Valley, otherwise I choose free roam Ambarino which puts me in a lobby where most people are in the middle of the map.
Hunt my way down to Strawberry, sell stuff and fast travel to Tumbleweed, Lemoyne or just keep hunting/doing stranger missions around Big Valley.

They will list what kind of missions they can give.
You can also get on the hunt missions from Trelawny in Rhodes.

@hushed steppe I also have the same question, about taming horses. when you get close to wild horses, it gives you the "calm" option. haven't tried it much yet to.

Disregarding the pistol option, which should be a mauser, you get two slots for long guns
Mauser is your close range headshot option
Sniper rifle should always be on you
After all, if a decent sniper is hunting you, you think you can call a horse and switch weapons easily?

Your other option depends on whether or not you want a repeater or a rifle. I'd suggest a rifle, as it can drop their health at the furthest lock on range, the second ring of fire they must pass through after getting past your sniper.

The meta will depend on how much health you lose in each scenario
I intend to put all my abilities in line with a cqc build
Run around, tackling people and relying on button mashing and stupid survivability for kills, but the abilities will also serve to enhance sniping prowess. Gonna skip abilities that reduce long range damage because melee damage doesn't matter when it's just a matter of outmashing someone.

All you do is lock onto someone, move your joystick up a bit and its a one shot headshot

I know there's a different system for animals but still.
It's just a boring meta with the varmint.

well, the 80% dmg I had in mind, would only be in effect in long distances. at close range, headshot with VR would still kill. at longer range, the 80% would simulate you not getting a perfect shot. and you needing a better weapon for that distance. makes the most sense to me.

If any split is to be done, I would rather see it in showdown, race, etc minigames.
But the clunky character movement makes free aim much harder in RDR than other games that don't have lock on.
That's what I feel anyways.
You're way more "weigthy" in this game compared to say Destiny.

Ideally, for me, I would like to see less lock on options in online.

Also, I find the duration of the lock on too long.
All in all, I think Gears of War have a better lock on system for PvP than RDR.

hmm, the GPS is so bad... I needed to get to my camp, which is on top of a cliff. GPS tells me to ride miles and miles on winding paths to get to it.. I see a small path leading up the cliff right from where I am. there in 30 seconds..
