@rocky anvil yeah its pretty RNG based. that said, it's random loot from the bandits, so if you aren't getting to loot them all you might be missing out (bodies despawn if you move far enough away from them before you get to loot them)

yeah, just outside saint denis you can find a couple of spots where herons spawn, feathers are $1.50 each... 15 bucks for a few minutes work. Alligators also for the big game meat
