I know it says estimated time remaining but it just doesn't budge it sits on the same file number and the timer instead goes up

if u need to run a scan, use Malwarebytes

Its more accurate then Defender at detecting viruses and its still freeware. but if it tries to get you into a trial for real time protection, you can safely disable all that stuff

but if its a browser hijacker... try use BleachBit to wipe all of your browser settings, cookies and more stored on your computer. anti viruses suck at detecting browser hijackers
