Dvi-d monitor just flashing colours on connect

I have an older 1440p dvi monitor that i wanted to use as a second monitor with my rx 6800 but it just flashes colours.

I'm using a generic hdmi to dvi cable

Windows picks it up on my laptop and desktop but doesnt show a resolution on the laptop
