So its a loaded question but I'll do my best to be straight forward.
On my wife's side, I have 5 niblings who will be at or around the age of 10. 3 of them are super into gaming, 2 are willing.
I want to have a server for minecraft where family and friends can join, hopefully to preserve memories. I also want to build pcs for fun and I think building them with said niblings will be a really cool activity for everyone involved.
But I'm stuck on what platform to proceed with. Originally I was thinking of sticking with AM4 and picking up 2nd hand stuff to really bring the price down. I'm talking 1600x's and 1060s.
But then the idea of future proofing and what games they will want to play when they are teens. Afterall, in about 5 years time, they will be in their mid teens, able to do jobs and earn money. And odds are they might want to play a new game with their friends, and using the lowest end AM4 will severly limit what they can do.
So I began to think about 5600x's, and then I thought about AM5. If I want longevity, starting with am5 will allow them to have their pc maybe into adulthood, since they might be able to go with a CPU 2 or 3 generations ahead.
I'm fully aware that going am5 is more expensive than am4, esspecially with the advantage of 2nd hand.
So here are my goals that I want to keep in mind:
1)I have to build 5 of these computers
2) in 5 years, how usefully will these machines likely be?
3) since I only really need a low end GPU for MC, thinking of limiting all builds to a 1060 6gb. That way they have SOME ability to play some other modern games, but if they want to play more demanding games, they'll have to upgrade themselves (which honestly, might actually be an incentive for them).
Really I'm just brainstorming here, as I won't be able to do this til around holiday 2024. But I want to discuss this so I can be either grounded back to earth or encouraged with things I didn't think about.
