Just got my wifi changed over from bt to virgin, when i had bt i’ve had a ethernet cable routed from my living room to my bedroom to connect to my pc, since i’ve switched to virgin my pc has lost all connection to the internet without me changing or swapping ethernet ports besides from unplugging it from the bt box and plugging it into the new virgin box

any fixes?
cheers

here now?

So PC with ethernet can't access the interwebs, but do other devices on wifi work ok?

#

You might need to dig up the webGUI for the router/modem and see what's up.

safe schooner
#

yes yes all other devices are working fine

#

just the pc that’s got ethernet in like usually

#

usual

#

and. is it’s just sorta went tits up

dreamy parrot
safe schooner
#

just says the connection has timed out when i try

dreamy parrot
#

That should open the login page for the router's GUI

#

Hmm, let's get a picture of the router's backside

#

Or at least check that you've plugged ethernet into a LAN port, not WAN port.

safe schooner
#

it’s one of the blue cables

dreamy parrot
#

Alright hmm, where do the other cables go, do those devices work?

safe schooner
#

so

#

the other cables r for 2 sky boxes

#

i’ll check if they work now

#

then 1 is for our bar

#

then 1 goes straight to my room

#

which connects to my pc

dreamy parrot
#

top cable seems to have a broken clip, make sure it's plugged in or use another cable

#

Also the QR code is semi sensitive, if your neighbours hang out on this discord they can now use your wifi, but the chance for that is uh, not large.

safe schooner
#

i’ll remove it for now

dreamy parrot
#

For the best yeah.

safe schooner
#

i’ll see if i can get a different ethernet cable

#

the sky boxes don’t seem to be working

dreamy parrot
#

Just use one of the others for testing

#

What does the front of the router look like, like what lights are on/blinking?

safe schooner
#

swapped the cable

#

checking if that’s fixed anything on my pc rq

dreamy parrot
#

Never dealt with a cable modem before, but they're mostly the same I guess. I just noticed the huge coax going out from the bottom.

#

Or uh, is that fiber.

safe schooner
#

yes it’s fibre

dreamy parrot
#

Right, problem's still the same though, they don't wanna talk to each other.

safe schooner
#

aye nothings connecting ethernet wise

dreamy parrot
#

And Virgin said the contract would start.. when?

#

Take a pic from the front too please.

safe schooner
#

today

#

front of box

dreamy parrot
#

And power down the router for a good two mins or so, then turn it back on.

safe schooner
#

colour seems okay?

#

bet

dreamy parrot
#

Umm, does that front cover hide all the indicator leds?

#

Or are they on the side somewhere

#

Those are what I was interested in.

safe schooner
#

it’s bottom right which tells you the status of the box

#

small white light

dreamy parrot
#

Doesn't really, it says it's powered on but that's it. Routers typically have several leds, one for each ethernet port and a couple more for uplink and so on.

#

What's the model name for this thing?

safe schooner
#

it’s sorted

#

no

#

sorry

#

i’m back as in i’ve reset it

#

no changes to pc

#

checking sky rn

#

this wifi change will be worth it

#

from 50Mbps to 270…

#

🤩

#

M250 Fibre Broadband

#

that’s the name

#

not even letting me connect via wifi to the sky box

dreamy parrot
#

Hmm,that should work though

#

Unless they're using some custom url for access

#

I've seen a couple

#

I think your best bet is Virgin support though, or their documentation about how to access the box.

safe schooner
#

callin them rn

dreamy parrot
#

Yep, I think we did the homework with what we could, at least I'm running out of ideas.

safe schooner
#

right progress

#

connected via wifi to the sky box

#

checking my pc

#

i made sure all connections were secure

dreamy parrot
#

Dig around the sky box interface, make sure there's enough ip range for 4 different devices, no idea what the default settings look like.

#

Or rather, more than 4, since you'll have wireless devices too and not just ethernet connections

#

Also, the interface should tell if the sky box itself is connected to a switch on the other side

#

There should be information about a WAN connection, ip address and connection time

#

But you already know it is, since other devices can connect to internet.. right.

safe schooner
#

OMG

#

WE HAVE WIFI ON PC

#

SWITCHED CABLE

#

OMG

#

brother

#

can i just thank you for the help you’ve given

dreamy parrot
#

It's not wifi, it's ethernet :P

safe schooner
#

YES

dreamy parrot
#

Kinda grinds on me that younger folks use wifi when talking about any internet connection, but you're welcome :)

safe schooner
#

its ethernet

#

apologies

#

im not too great with networking

#

im more of a hardware sorta guy

dreamy parrot
#

So what changed?

safe schooner
#

so

#

i messed around with the ports

#

in the back of the wifi box

#

while also switching the cable

#

which then fixed the issue

#

ive got the sky connected by wifi, i think for the ethernet i need a new cable as this one is pretty destroyed

dreamy parrot
#

The top cable looked broken/loose at least

safe schooner
#

thats what i replaced

dreamy parrot
#

But that doesn't explain why the sky boxes weren't working either

safe schooner
#

and after restarting everything and unplugging a shit load

#

ahahahah

#

it all came together

#

thank

#

GOODNESS

#

ima have my networking friend come round and give everything a check to ensure there wont be any issues

#

god knows what the bar is like 🤣

dreamy parrot
#

Those are nice to have, network friends :)

#

Alright, good luck.

safe schooner
#

exactly, i fix their hardware they fix my networking problems lol

#

thank you Osku for all ur help

dreamy parrot
#

np, it's nice to be able to help sometimes, it's why I hang around here

safe schooner
#

#

dreamy parrot
#
