Currently running a Ryzen 5 1500x, an MSI b350 Mortar Arctic motherboard, a 1x16GB 2400mhz Gskill Ripjaws stick of ram, a GTX 1060 6GB, and a 520w Seasonic PSU.

Planning on getting an upgrade but I could use some advice. My current plan is to pick up a Ryzen 5 3600, flash the motherboard to be compatible, and buy another 1x16GB kit of ram. That being said, I'm aware that mismatching ram can have some pretty heavy effects on performance and someone else I've talked to previously suggested just dumping the 1x16 kit and picking up a 2x8 kit with a higher frequency.

Would that be ideal? I have a very slim budget as of right now so I would've thought using the ram I currently have would be a good idea so would appreciate some thoughts.

If the budget is slim, I'd try the sketchier config first and see if it's stable for you. If yes, cool use it. If no, return the stick and get matching ones.
