frank plaza
#

as search result its up there so its compatible ๐Ÿ™‚

#

best bet is to check the motherboard website, as I linked above and check the compatibility of said motherboard

rough bison
#

how about the
Crucial P3 1TB PCIe Gen3 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSD, up to 3500MB/s - CT1000P3SSD8

#

is it also compatible

#

@frank plaza

frank plaza
#

check with that link above please

rough bison
#

i dont know how

frank plaza
#

you type in crucial P3

#

and see if it shows up

#

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ if it does great

#

if it doesn't , no information has been found or not tested and it might be compatible most likely

rough bison
#

is it ok to buy an external ssd for gaming?

#

jasper

#

is it?

frank plaza
#

why?

#

internal SSD works perfectly

#
#

"But its not an NVME M2 " ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ overrated speedwise it does not matter.

rough bison
#

ok

#

i ordered a WD_BLACK 1TB SN770 NVMe

#

i checked and its compatible

frank plaza
#

Good ! ๐Ÿ™‚

rough bison
#

but it doesnt come with a heatsink

#

is that ok?

#

or do i need one

frank plaza
#

you can buy a heatsink ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ they are pretty cheap

rough bison
#

but do i need one

frank plaza
#

Undoubtly yes

rough bison
#

what if i dont have one will it die

#

because i want to be sure

Yes and no.

Apparently NVMe drives have an optimal operating temperature that is much higher than a regular HDD. So if they get too cold they actually become less efficient. So you will want them to run around 40+ degrees celsius. However they will also begin to thermally throttle when they get too hot, which is around 90-105 degrees Celsius depending on the brand.

So unless you are doing crazy amounts of non stop writing to the drives (like 30 mins+) you are unlikely to see any performance throttling if you are not running with a heatsink/spreader.

PCIe Gen4 NVMe is a different story as these seem to run a lot hotter, so that is why you will see them coming with giant heatsinks pre-installed on Gen4 drives.

For PCIe 3 NVMe drive you should be fine to run without any heat sink or spreader, although it is good practice to use a spreader (lots of mid range motherboards come with their own spreaders) as it will help to spread the heat more evenly across the drive to prevent hot spots (which would give more chances of thermal throttling)
#

short said ; its better for life expectancy

rough bison
#

ok how do i know what heatsink i need

#

like how can i choose

frank plaza
#
