friend of mine has an RTX 2070 Gigabyte Gaming OC that keeps crashing when playing games. between 1 second and 3 minutes in. but only crashing the game not the entire pc. he has tried installing new windows 2x and drivers 5x. all other hardware is fine since we tested it in my pc and when trying my gpu in his pc it was fine. im thinking it could be the temps but that should crash the entire pc right not just the game. and playing videos and googling is not an issue.

any tips are helpful

Here are some tips, 🙂

Check the temperatures: Use a temperature monitoring software to check the temperature of the graphics card while playing a game. If the temperature is consistently above 80-85 degrees Celsius, it's likely that overheating is the cause of the crashes. In this case, try cleaning the dust off the graphics card and make sure the fans are working properly.

Update the BIOS: Sometimes, updating the BIOS can help resolve issues with hardware compatibility and stability. Check the motherboard manufacturer's website for any available updates and follow the instructions to update the BIOS.

Check for overclocking: If the graphics card has been overclocked, try resetting it to its default settings and see if that resolves the issue.

Test the RAM: Use a memory testing software like MemTest86 to check if the RAM is functioning properly. Faulty RAM can cause crashes and instability in games.

Run a stress test: Use a stress testing software like FurMark to stress test the graphics card and see if it crashes. If it does, it's likely that there is a hardware issue with the graphics card that requires replacement or repair.

Same thing happens to me but with a 2060.

I had a similar problem with a Asus rog strix RTX 2080 gaming OC.
Games always started to freeze.
I solved this problem through undervolting.
You should give it a try.

Hello again, I found the issue for my case, it was the CPU overheating instead of any GPU related issues, which caused the games not to crash, but to close by default, hence why older titles were working for me.
I don't know if this will help but I thought I'd drop this over here.
