esd is just discharge of charged electricity stored in your body. Theres lots of ways to charge yourself like rubbing your socks on the carpet. If you have something grounded (plugged in psu) and you touch it, youll discharge that electricity to ground. If you just touch your case before working on your computer, you should be fine. Unless your computer is on, you (probably) wont cause damage to your components. When you discharge electricity into a component of your system, itll just pass through that component and probably back to ground. You can tell if you broke something if your computer doesnt work after a discharge and some troubleshooting.

yes and no. If you wanna be grounded to wall power, yes. Whatever you discharge to is what youll be at equilibrium with (to my knowledge im not an electrician) so if you ground yourself to the case you wont be grounded to the wall pwoer, but youll be at electric equilibrium with the pc case and whatever components are connected.

and the cracling sound could be either the locking tabs locking the ram in, or it could just be the connectors flexing. So long as your ram shows up its fine, but if you hear that crackling and then your ram doesnt show up, the little connector fingers might be damaged
