that system im folding on that i used as a test bench as well to figure out an issue with a friends PC that ended up being malware, is still shutting off randomly even after i reinstalled the OS drive
im gonna play with it some more probably, maybe secure erase the OS drive before reinstalling, but idkwtf at this point and it only spent 4 hours online yesterday before shutting down Y_Y
im wondering if it's a bug in the RX5700xt causing it to overheat, cause of the tendency for it to push the OC window till it hits Tjmax and downclocks
i didnt check it before going ot bed cause i'd basically been asleep all day cause im sick rn, and it basically didn't do any work cause of it 😦

once it cools off later i'm def gonna go mess with it tho. i guess i could secure erase my old 840 evo 500gb and swap it for the 860 in there then secure erase that too, and put the newer SSD in my main rig once i'm done lol. i took it out cause i needed an extra drive to move data around with at the time but i'm good now. just tired of it shutting down and not getting any folding done and i don't know if it's just the temps because that was the symptom of the other malware, tho it would eventually start doing it within minutes when the malware itself was active. its been completely purged as far as i know though

@marble quartz they're on a newer revision now im pretty sure. 20.4.2 is from april. i still need to update my folding rig (rx580 and rx5700xt so not affected) from 20.4.2 lol i just haven't gotten around to it cause it's stable
also @rich depot i suspect my random shutdowns on my 5700xt were because of the auto-turbo not throttling down fast enough on super hot days. i disabled the auto-OC my card came with (2038mhz vs 1905 as what it was listed as even tho it ran that way out of the box) and it stopped randomly shutting off SO FAR, we will see because the hot days passed as well and i haven't had a chance to test it fully since then lol. its 23c out today its rather nice, much better than the 35-38c it was those hot days
it shut off in like 4 hours one of the days after shutting off earlier in the day teh same day and i didn't check it till the next day, and it shut off the day before that, so after finding it the last time i reconfigured it but then left the garage door open and it ended up cooling off that night and stayed better for the last 3 days xD no shut offs

i spent most of the evening last night after i noticed that issue helping a friend get his rig back up and configured over VNC while we talked about other stuff and some of what i was doing as well. im actually impressed, he's using VGA with the monitor it's plugged into so its running off the IGP since he's not doing any gaming, and folding@home wasn't popping up at first till i updated the driver after which it just worked properly even tho i haven't gotten him the right adapter to let him use one of the DVI on the 290x as a VGA instead lol
im p sure all he needed was a DVI cable as well he said, we spent so much time talking about so much stuff on it i forget. i still need to figure out why the 6tb drive in it disappeared as well after i sent it out to him, and go get the 1tb drive and 500gb ssd i left in it on accident cause i forgot and i was in the middle of a stellaris game when he came to pick it up so i just ran out, did the hand off, and ran back in without verifying the state of it

fair xD you could get around it to a degree by making it download the work at 90% of the last unit, but the amount of data they move back and forth basically demands a decent connection (both up and down) or else you could very quickly fold units faster than you can upload them back, even if you can download them at a decent pace

one of my friends 2070 super died so he has to RMA it and he has my 5700xt on loan
and my 290x is in a friend's rig offsite and for some reason it's not getting as many WU assigned as it did at my house /shrug
otherwise i could hit up around 9.5 million points per day max minimum 8.5ish probably
also i intend to purchase one of the next gen GPUs coming up, idk what yet
i had 10 cards total at my house in farm and then the 1060 3gb i bought on ebay died after a month
also running 3 of my 4 CPUs with some amount of threads, including a 3900x which is running 22 threads rn but runs 20 when theres 2 GPUs in that rig
ironically, my 3900x puts out more PPD than some GPUs that are still somewhat relevant for gaming if you only play at 1080p or less lol
like the 7970/280x
290x is actually a beast at folding still, same performance as an RX580, just more power draw

That database is a project started by LAR_Systems at the end of last month it is real data collected from the chrome extention. If you look the 2060 that is showing better that the 2070 it is one of the ones that has a TU104 chip not the normal TU106

it's getting deprioritized for work over my others and it's the only rig off site as well which is frustrating. i had to set the new work unit % to 90 just to get it to start looking sooner because it literally never gets a work unit after it completes one anymore, it has to wait hours and hours each time if not more xD

5th system that isn't there now is a dual socket Supermicro server with 2 E5-2660 CPU's (32 total threads). And that manages a little over 200k PPD

On default setting that is about right. To lower it you need to change the CPU slot config in the Client Advanced Control to tell how many CPU threads to use

according to linus' tests you probably do not want to
thermals will be terrible, apple intentionally underbuilt their thermal solution to fit the form factor and it affected performance
CPU can't even run to its advertised turbo speeds
it may run but you're gonna need to do some serious tuning to keep it stable long term without killing the macbook

i still have the 980ti, 2 1060 6gb (p106-100 miner), 1070, 2060, rx580, and my 2080ti all going, but the 2080ti accounts for 1/3 of that now and i was using it to game
i also forgot to st art it overnight on one night
and i have a 290x in a friend's rig folding away offsite but because of network issues and issues with the servers it only got work like 1/3 of the time or less
idk why but that rig is also reporting only like 100kppd from the GPU and i have no idea why

At my peak, I was running an AMD HD 7700, 1050ti, and 980. I have (2) more 980s that I thought of swapping out for the 1050ti, but the PSU on the setup wouldn't be strong enough to handle both so I didn't bother even swapping 1 out.
I had one night that I was so tired that I also forgot to turn back on F@H for my 980. 10hrs of not computing. Ouch.

my 2080ti is obviously quite fast so i set it to 90 to keep it always busy but i have other slots running as much as 97 right now because of how long they take to complete WUs

@severe warren changing it to 100% is the same as if you didn't have it at all. i'd recommend setting it to 97-98% unless your card is ridiculously slow, anthing faster than like a 1070 i'd set to 95% or so and the only cards i'd set sooner are like the 2070 and above lol
the idea is to have some overlap but say there's a shortage of WU it keeps you in the game asking for WU faster and if your internet is also slower it helps

and yea as far as using the pause/play flag it does that automatically when you click pause lol
you dont need to mess with that the client puts that there by itself
the only flags you want to mess with are ones you add yourself
though if your pause/play button is being buggy in any given client version you CAN use that as a hack to work around it sometimes

they occasionally spray water everywhere though if you forget to open your reservoir first
my rig was at +pressure and one of them didn't want to close when i opened the connection and i had to rush it back onto the connection. i opened the res then disconnected the other end of that section so the pressure would be in that section only
they occasionally just decide they dont want to valve off so i always open with lots of paper towels but it was enough pressure the spray got everywhere
somehow it avoided my board entirely but i think i damaged my SSD some other way if it didn't get shorted by water. im praying it detects after i let it sit for a few days

or because the 'Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling' is messing with it
because im in win 10 2004 update
and my GTX 1660 Ti max-q is just spiking not leveling its performance

ussually when im folding the cuda in the task manager shows up
but it doesnt when i turn on gpu scheduling
im just scared that the new driver is affecting the time to finnish the folding
but it seems the time to finnish didnt get affected

ussually the hard working core is the CUDA
the drop down only have; 3D, Copy, Video encode and decode, copy 1 and 2, Security, and VR
ussually there's more

well i can say this, the PC that did get the update had been having an issue where it would shut down seemingly randomly
after 2004 that problem became much worse
to the point where the PC would shut down every day
so I actually wiped it and installed Linux (PoPOS!)
its been running for nearly 20 days straight folding on 2 GPU's and the CPU

I don't trust MS not to screw something up on the major updates so I have mine delayed 60 days. That gives them 2 months to fix what they screwed up before my systems update.

folding@home and BOINC are what's called distributed computing platforms
folding focuses specifically on protein folding algorithms for mainly medical research to cure or better understand various diseases
BOINC is a more general platform (on which they also have another subset DC program called world community grid as well which is one of the oldest), and they have various different projects you can individually add to your client by making accounts with those project's websites and choose how to allocate your system resources
there's projects for CPU and GPU on both platforms as well

@fierce steppe yeah that screenshot I showed you was it actually working, but like Spectrum stated, when it isn't all I see is unknown across the board. I have to delete the slot, and then re-add the slot to get it to start working again. I will say, compared to 4 months ago, this PC hasn't stopped folding.

Try playing games while folding, I have been amazed at how games are still quite playable without pausing
