You can set it to whatever you want. Kinda.
You can enter any number from 1 to the number of threads your CPU supports.
If you have GPUs, F@H reserves one CPU per GPU to feed it data across the PCIE bus.
F@H has difficulty with large primes and their multiples number of CPUs.
7 is always large, 5 is sometimes large, and 3 is never large. Try to choose a number that is a multiple of 2 and/or 3.
2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 16, 18, 24, 27, etc. are good numbers of CPUs to choose.
5. 10. 15, 20 etc may work most of the time. Other numbers will bite you.```Gotcha, changed it to 6 and it seems to be working per utilization in task manager. Thanks!

since gpu mining is opencl , and folding at home is opencl you can use them for folding.

8 work units on the Mac Pro.
Heated the room to a toasty 74°F/23.3°C, with all 4 cores at 100°F/37.8°C. Opened some windows, and a nice breeze helped bring all the temps down, especially the PSU from 154°F/67.8°C to 120°F/48.9°C
PSU is 980 watts, so if the CPU’s are all at max, it’ll definitely warm up.

they are well cooled but the alu outer chassis is only so helpful when the inside is still the same plastic and steel construction most cases are
they just perform well because of good channel airflow and such
not really a lot of dead spots heat can accumulate in the case, which is how you get the best heat transmission into the metal of the case itself lol

The non-door side has minimal air flow, but the aluminium is conductive & thick enough to provide some radiant effect for the air in that space.

one project I saw a watercooling nerd do was build a waterblock for the entire back of the board. he basically seated the entire board on short risers and used a super sized thermal pad grid to pull heat off of it there. the block used the hot water outtake from the rest of the loop and it still helped things like VRM temps and such
cost a ton to do but since it was for the case it was a 1 time and forget it job 😄

This case is designed with high flow in mind, however the rear fan only has a small & indirect path for air to come from behind the logic board at the very bottom. Beneath the RAM riser cards.

I had a chain company contract my company to figure out why all their drives on their Camera NVR’s were dying after 6 months of them getting the NVR’s. We get on site and go through the specs. Turns out they had asked for either purple, black, or red WD drives. They got either green or blue WD drives. These drives were recording 24/7. I just shook my head, replaced the drives and it cost them about $25,000 worth of drives because whoever installed the system clearly wasn’t competent enough to know the difference

i pulled this 38mm fan out of an old bitcoin miner from 2012, it sounds like a jet starting up
it's so powerful i cut off a tiny tip of my knuckle and i took the fan grilles from the miner and stuck them on it to protect it and myself xD. i destroyed the last fan in there with a cable that took one of its fins off. now to see if i can get this final rig mining 😄

cram a bunch of 100-150w cards on it (slot plus 6 pin) or less, and riser them out with box fans and shit cooling them. larger cards were okay but harder to cool so people preferred the smaller ones since you could scale out fast using 1x risers on a board that has 7 slots lol

I have two decent GPUs in my system (work-from-home PC, for CG/GameDev). But neither of them seem to work. They both have a "waiting for idle" status.
How do I fix it?

TL; DR: I already fixed that
This happened after I tried to set the flag @brittle coral mentioned. The advanced control gave me some error about "can't set up a GPU with index -1" or something, so I saved it manually setting the index to 1 and 2, respectively. Same numbers as GPUs have in the "Slots" list. As it turns out, the GPU numbering seem to be 0-based (there's no GPU with index 2), so when I re-saved them, manually setting the index back to -1, the 2nd GPU became properly detected again.

I use HWMonitor. It shows current, min and max clock speed of my gpu and cpu.
If you are having issues with your cpu you can limit the number of threads to get the temperate down some.

you can also limit the number of threads to keep your system from stuttering if that's part of the issue
also @sand inlet you can combine that with disabling GPU acceleration in your browser to keep it from hiccuping since most modern CPUs are still more than capable of doing the work they were offloading to the GPU anyway lol

Now that you are running two Nvidia GPUs remember that they tie up 2 threads.
As long as I don't run into thermal issues I like this formula: FAH Threads = System threads -1 for system and -1 per GPU

On the one hand, when I render, this GPU is successfully detected and significantly speeds up render time.
On the other hand, many years ago, when I was mining, I had to manually craft a physical fake-display plug and attach it to any monitor port to make GPU available. It's something about Windows putting GPUs with no displays to some sleeping mode.
But, again, my render works just fine with no jumps through hoops.

From what I've found, temps below 85 C should be fine. Some say it's even 90. But both of these seem too high for me.
As for GPUs - some say 90 is OK while others say even 80 is hot as hell.

the one time i crammed all 4 5870s in one rig together with basically no room to breathe, and i piped air in through the tiniest of gaps using a blower
the exhaust from all 4 was piped into another shroud
and i hung meat in it
and then it pumped that air (carbon and hepa filtered) into the rest of the air circulation for the house so it was basically always warm
was at a friend's place where i was mooching power since he had all solar and his heating was electric anyway, he built the system for me to dump heat so we could double up on the rig's usefulness
and then the jerky drying rig was a later addition

I'm okay with the assign rate being fairly low, but I've chalked it up to the amount of hardware people have and the amount of WU's going out to everyone that has hardware ready to run it

Given that there are plenty of people with hardware ready to do WU's, and some of them searching servers to get WU's done, it's possible that we're oversaturating the servers with our hardware. So even when and if they add a new server and make it available to distribute WU's, how long would it take for all of our hardware, collectively, to saturate the new server?

I don't quite understand how the servers work, in that they distribute units to a PC's hardware that is available, but my theory is just that we have so much hardware, that F@H really needs more server throughput
