Basically linux os is very modular and each flavor/distro has their own take on what to implement/use

I got it figured out...
it downloaded the iso file but also made a disk on my computer...
I ejected it, then found the iso file, had to drag and drop it to rufus because it wouldn't see the iso file

This is a i7 4770k so a total of 8 threads. now written there is 14 slot thread wise.

Previously when saying out of scope i was referring to the 6 extra slots which don't have a cpu thread to go to as they are all in use.

Would the out of scope slot get given WU's even though no work could be done on them until other slots clear up?

Turns out I think the answer is no which is probably a good thing otherwise someone could exploit this and with high thread count setups just horde a load of WU's for themselves

actually it would try to do everything, but since you have "Over-Provisioned" your CPU it would take forever

I suppose you could Micro manage it by pausing slots as you got too many and then turning them back on once other slots go idle

but WU's have a deadline and if it takes too long to check in F@H will throw out the WU

I've noticed on GPU WU's the CPU has to do alot of work to get the GPU started on It's WU

#

so if your CPU is doing work at the same time as you get a new GPU WU it can take several minutes just to get the GPU WU going

If you have completed at least one WU from the same project earlier the client know how long a wu take to complete.

#

If it's the first wu from that project what you see is an estimate until the first frame has been completed.

Or maybe it's a couple of frames.

@hushed bobcat The work does not magically appear on the GPU. The CPU is used to feed the GPU work. Larger/more complex work units require more of your CPU.

There will definitely be more people than there was before, but a lot of people will stop. Especially as the northern hemisphere starts going in to summer and temperatures rise. People won't want their PC heating their rooms

I think a lot of people will continue to fold after the forum event ends
I don't think most people are doing it for that. It's fun, but I think people are motivated by Covid-19

It's a little harder to see now that the graph is flattened
But after each forum folding event (the spikes) there is a noticeable increase in points after the event
There's a big drop but the production is always higher than what it was before the event so people are sticking around

you can see on the GPU's that CUDA Device 0 is referring to GPU 1 and vice versa

In the log you can see how long it has been since your last attempt. If it has been more than like 30 minuter and next attempt is far off you can pause the slot and start it again. This will reset the next attempt timer.

Do NOT abuse this as it will add to the friendly fire ddos of the servers.

There is a general delay that can be days.
There is also another, even longer, delay that shows when a work server fails to collect the result and it goes to another collect server.

Rewarding points is low on their list of priorities. But they are rewarded sooner or later.

@frozen crypt there has been a huge amount of new folders, and while they are constantly working on the backend, it can happen that you are without an WU

#

its now better than before, then it could take like days to get one

#

also, they are pretty much done with the gpu jobs and now doing a bunch of cpu only wu's. So thats also a factor to consider. Maybe they just had 1080 jobs laying around and no 2080ti

#

also, if possible, keep the machines running. Once they add servers its best if they get a full workload right away and not where all the people have to spin up their machines again cause they didn't get wu's.

By trying to keep up with the forum, fah at twitter and Bowman at twitter my summary is.
GPU is used to fold the different proteins of the virus. This is used to find ways to interact with it.
CPU is used to find ways drugs can interact with the proteins.

I'm sure there are a ton of more details to be added.

Should still stay there until it either uploads, it times out, or you dump it

Restarting the client can often help if its stuck trying to upload (I believe for the same reason that pausing/resuming or restarting the client helps with downloads)

I've had one PC running that didn't get anything all night.. tried pausing and starting.. Must have had 55 failed attemps. it wasn't until I shut down the app and restarted before I got my next WU

In another discord people have been suggesting this for a while, only do it if you have a pretty fast GPU like 2070 or higher
on your GPU slot use the beta client, they are beefier work units but there's more of them available
