Congrats on the new GPU Ben!
AND ITS A WRAP, the folding month is over, thank you all who participated, we appreciate you
Can I still fold?
you're still able to fold
thx\
I almost made it to top 1000
@rich depot Congratulations! And thanks for the work you put in with the November rankings, definitely made it interesting!
Though I don't think I started until the 17th or something. Monday after the Wan show it was mentioned on
Sigh. Didn't make it to a quarter of a billion like I wanted to.
Currently hand verify those who met the minimum requirements
Then you have nothing to worry about
:)
I'm glad the folding event is over, I don't think neither me or my card could handle tomorrows temps while folding π
The Folding event is never over in our hearts
What is folding?
@rich depot Folding@Home is a project created by the Stanford University that uses computer power to contribute to disease research such as cancer
How it works is that someone like you can download the Folding client and configure your CPU and GPU to conduct what are known as 'work units', sets of homework that your PC does that will directly contribute to the SU's efforts in research
does it require internet connection after you've downloaded it?
In my experience, I fold using my GPU only (GTX 1060) and it gets assigned a work unit that can be done within 3-6 hours, and will earn me points towards my EOC and Folding profiles, at the cost of having my GPU running 100% for the duration of the WU
As far as I'm aware, you don't need a stable internet connection during the folding due to the nature of how work units download before it starts doing its thing, once it's done, your GPU uploads its WU to the SU's database and that's when you need an internet connection
I leave my PC on when I go to work to fold when I'm away and so it can complete its WUs when I'm away, it uses hella GPU power and consumes a lot of electricity which is why I eventually stopped
@outer solar 'the folding event is never over in our hearts' that should be our slogan next year
"with great processing power comes great responsibility"?
Haha
For me, it's great processing power comes great dust levels
Lmao, yep, the dust really can build up
wonder how much the teams folding power will reduce over the next couple days.
I am still folding 100& for a few more days.
@rich depot Yea i expect at least that.
I'll be at 100% for as long as possible as it is my home heating atm
@rich depot You mean 110% right?, with your new 1080 xD π Congrats again π
You won the 1080, Ben?
He did
Niiice
@green yarrow Yeah, more like 180% if we are being honest once I get it
@limber onyx Yeah I did, cant wait to get her folding asap
Ok, i see you reduced your folding power a lot since the end of november π
Yeah, A friend lent me some hardware
ATM my hardware really only does around 2.2-2.4m PPD
I have it power limited to hit efficiency targets
GG, hope you have a lot of fun with it.
My hardware will make me around 1.2M PPD. I am only GPU folding though
This is the folding channel, plus a profitable folding rig isnt really feasable for almost everyone
I'm dreading seeing the electricity bill
I've already had mine... wasnt too bad
I mean, when I think about the offset to the gas bill
my bill will be double this month i guess. i will see it in a couple months time
I am shutting one of my machines down from next WU
and only partially fold on my main rig from now on, instead of 24/7
huh? Think they need more data points or something
Well, OCN lost a lot of folks. So, not many adding data points to that
When the dust filter restricts the fan too much but you still need it
π π
Specs and pricing have been released for the Titan RTX... Does this mean you can tell us how it performs in folding, Jake? π
I don't think so. I don't think @rich depot could handle running another one again so soon
Haha, honestly, I probably could have with just posting ranks after we fixed the bugs with our recording. But I'm thinking I wanna do a BOINC event next... Maybe... Idk
Agreed @unique sigil please tell us
okedoke. I'll leave my two servers folding until the NOC complains
π
@fierce steppe Regular RTX didn't improve much, since ray tracing is irrelevant to folding, and that's what justified most of the price increase. The only thing that mattered was the overall specs. We'll probably see a small improvement over the 2080 but not even close to justifying the cost.
It's a similar issue to how the RTX cards are useless for crypto mining, unless you somehow got the best discount on the goddamn planet
@knotty oar I thought the RTX series of cards performed really well in Folding.
Isn't the 2080ti around 2.4m PPD? That's almost double the performance of the 1080ti.
But yeah, the 2080ti and Titan RTX both use the TU-102 die (apparently) so there likely won't be significant gains
Yeah, the RTX cards are beasts at folding
I'm curious as to what BOINC is
Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing
I think
essentially it's a tool/setup that lets you do compute for a vast array of projects, not just folding like FAH
Originally written for SETI@Home but now used by many projects.
The issue is the price of rtx. At least I recall going from Kepler to Maxwell the gains in folding was nuts considering the price was a steal for the bump. Still remember my gtx960 out doing my old OG Titan in F@H
Kind of the reason Pascal was okish to me, but damn this rtx is a big meh to me
If I somehow won (I wont, because the chance is so low) I dont know what I would do with it
π
@outer solar Basically what Edgeman said, I believe F@H used to run on the BOINC network
Oh huh, in that case, I may try my hand at BOINC if I can
Only 350? but, LTT is big.... why so few?
Its about the same that joined the folding month thing
I think
Why do you keep deleting your messages?
I dont know
I didnt like it
What if the person that won it just flashed it other people and did nothing else with it
Then thats what they choose to do
π
Or just hung it on the wall, or cut out the GPU itself and made a necklace or keyring thing of it
... sure ...
I wont do that
What do the server do? (my guess would be folding or storage)
If I won, I'm not sure a 450W PSU would be enough for a 1080
My smol PSU has survived my 1060 on full load during Folding thus far though, so power to it
Ben won the one 1080
If I had no monetary limit, I would've gotten the EVGA GTX 1070 SC in white
Is there a rule against same person winning two things? if not, what if Ben won both the 1080 and a 1070? would be random but cool
I do have a GPU on my wall btw, because its dead.
Thats why I said that earlier
Id have a top class folding box if I won both
@outer solar The 1080 is mine Mwahahahaha
What 1080 is it?
No idea
I did Message jake to see if Linus could sign it hahaha
I just hope it aint a FE or similar cause its going into the living room PC to fold all day every day
Would be cool if all of the GPUs was signed
If it's an Aorus one, I'm robbing you
You can try, I'll just throw all my spare hardware at you
I sort of bet its FE, because those are the "worst" ones they have prob, but who knows
Maybe not
I still want an Aorus card at heart
I just happened to choose Asus hardware for my PC
Also because admitedly Asus are the only people who do white 1060s
when it comes to looks I think Sapphire makes good looking GPUs, but they dont do Nvidia
I'm a sucker for any white graphics card, really
I really like minimalist looks, like the VEGA reference cards
I like the EVGA SC2 Hybrid though
I've done one before, they arent hard
Send me a pic of your system?
One sec, CSGO game
@rich depot
ooo pretty
That's a new custom PCIE 6-pin cable so winning a 1070 is both a good thing and a slight buyer's remorse moment
Vega reference cards do look good
If I won the 1070 I'd probably gift it to my brother in exchange for his 1060, as he games a lot more than I do, and the games I do play are generally fine even on my HD 6950 (Factorio, etc)
Have the 1070 winners been announced yet?
Nein aka no
@givingtnt
π
Congratulations, @potent oar
Thanks π
Aye @rich depot
Aye?
@rich depot I'm going to do a steam giftcard giveaway on the forum. When I pick the winner, can I ask you to verify if they met the Folding Month criteria.
Sure!
That was the plan.
Giveaway is live: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1003659-steam-giveaway-for-folding-month-participants/?tab=comments#comment-12038532
The Folding Month 2018 even went really well! As a small token of my appreciation, Ill be giving away a $20 steam gift card to an eligible participant chosen at random. Prize: $20 Steam Gift Card Eligibility Requirements: You must have met or exceeded the requirements for Fol...
Ty for that
No problem
@rich depot going to be walking away with a 1080 and a RTX 2070? π
@rich turtle I'm not sure if Seoz would accept that RTX2070... It doesn't match the white theme of their build π
lol
was there only one 1070 winner?
There were two. @potent oar and a user on the forum called HighFad
https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/990335-help-scientists-cure-cancer-with-your-pc-folding-home/?do=findComment&comment=12037909
6 minutes ago, dahoff said: So Im looking at the Project Summary page and clicking on random projects to read the descriptions, and I cant find any projects that target Alzheimers, Huntingons, or Parkinsons, sort of Folding@homes original projects before they bο»Ώranched out ...
Ah a forum user. Teaches me to check the forum π
Gratz @potent oar
Congrats
Nice
@fierce steppe I think I'm more concerned that I have too smol a PSU to handle a 2070
I fold but not 24/7
@outer solar which PSU do you have?
Corsair CX450M
That'll be fine for a single 2070, won't be able to run the 1060 as well though
I'll give my 1060 to my brother
Hmm
How come the cpu folding in folding@home is so much faster than GPU
I just have a weak GPU compared to the CPU? I guess
Probably something to do with how weak a CPU is in compute compared to a full GPU
My 8600K does like 12K per WU in the space of an hour, compared to my GTX 1060 which easily does 50-60K per WU but takes upwards of 4 hours
ah
CPU folding is not worth the heat and electricity for a measly PPD
I just fold when I am in my uni
With my laptop
Then I can not care about the effiency lol
I've noticed that folding@home does not use integrated graphics though
That sounds like a bad idea especially with a mobile GPU
Are you not concerned about heat and battery life, stuff like that?
brb gonna fold with my laptop with an Atom processor
lol
Ah
We don't have access to any university computers obviously
people would probably either break them or steal them
Really? You'd think for a university, it would be quite the opposite
Nah
The computers are for the employees
Students bring their own
All the threads
hmm
my cpu does give more ppd
than my gpu
π€
5494 on cpu and 2150 on gpu
I generally don't follow the PPD estimation
It's never correct for me since I never fold 24/7
If you get an 11718 or 11719 WU, you're going to be folding that WU for an eternity
14XXX ones are the easy ones if I remember correctly
ah
11718 WU on a mobile GPU is going to be a while
i also did SETI for a while but decided to stick on f@h
yeah
says 7 days
oh
nvm it went down
My 1060 does an 11718 WU in 5-6 hours
I always hate getting the 11718 WU because it means I'll have only completed the one WU while I'm away at work
Although sometimes the 11718 WU yields me 75K easily so it's not the worst thing
lol 9 days to complete it
and it'll take 2.22 days of being on
i could leave it on in the night
LTT Team is down 40% or so after the folding month ended
Still 0 threats and getting more daily points than some teams that's is higher
At this rate, getting to 10. place (from 12.) will take 1 month+
Its shame that cpu performance is kinda worthless.
Bardcool, I know, sadly
rip
ninjoun: I'm running on CPU-only: https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=814122
wooooooo
I tried folding@home on my old laptops
That was... slow
One of them has a pentium T4300 and no gpu
to be fair I'm running it on a pair of R720 servers that have 32 threads each
I use my 2013 laptop and sometimes my desktop
I don't like leaving my desktop on while I am away from home though
752458 points so far though
Well I could keep my desktop running
But itβd make little difference (until I get a GPU)
Whatβs this chat about?
Folding and BOINC projects @sacred wedge
Iβll google it thx
I explained Folding earlier to another guy, I can find it if you want
time to fold a bit
By the way, what is the difference between Compute_0 and Compute_1 in windows?
Β―_(γ)_/Β―
Conpute_0 looks suspiciously like "Video Encode" in the above pic
I still havenβt redownloaded the FAH client after it destroyed my HDD lol but I will in the coming week.
You better!
I donβt plan on folding on my main rig anyways, Iβm just gonna keep it to my second PC.
Let down
I told you one 1080 Ti. Deal with it
xC still waiting for my internet to be back up. Darn weather keeps slowing the line workers down. Hopefully it be back up once I get the water block for one of my 1080tis, so I can fold on it.
@pseudo abyss the XOC stats and overtake predictions take a while to update. I think they're based off the daily averages. At the moment the LTT daily average is still really high (215m points per day) since it's still calculating the average off what we were doing during the event. Really we're down to about half that, 110m PPD at the moment.
It's basing the 1 month to overtake the next team off a gain of 150-200m PPDs from when we were doing over 200m PPD average. Once the averages update the gain we have on them will drop significantly and the time it will take to catch the next team will rise.
The next team is 5bill points ahead, earning on average 60m PPD.
At LTTs current 110m PPD (50m gain) it will take us over 3 months to catch them.
Though Taiwan Team is only 6 billion points ahead of LTT, but they're only doing about 17m PPDs so with LTT earning 110m PPD we will be gaining almost 93m PPD per day and will catch them in about 2 months at current rate.
(Taiwan Team is in 10th at the moment, but PC Gamers Hardware who is in 11th will probably overtake them in a month or so)
Were the folding contest winners announced?
You mean the GPU? Winners? The 1080 was, the 1070s I believe have not been yet
1070s were as well
There were two. @givingtnt and a user on the forum called HighFad
https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/990335-help-scientists-cure-cancer-with-your-pc-folding-home/?do=findComment&comment=12037909

Oh true
Oh, ok spotty
My desktop is so much faster at folding than my laptop
It's nice
I only have one x16 slot though
Folding can only be done on 64-bit Windows 10, right?
Oh sweet
Taking bets on how long my laptop will take to do a work unit, has an Intel Atom Z3735F
I bet like a week
lol
If it gets a 14XXX WU
@unique sigil is this laptop folding in the LTT video?
Damn so many people are doing team 0
@stuck bramble because they don't specify a team or an identity
No shit
how many points per day do you usually get I am around 23k
I'm folding with a 1080 Ti at 50% power, and I get about 950-960k
HAH Linus is being beat by EVGA
Anyone know when the folding badges will be handed out? Please @ me.
@strong seal It's a 1 man job, so they'll likely pop up one at a time over the course of a month or longer considering the holiday season.
The massive turnout was not expected. I bet they anticipated like 20 badges.
I need a dust badge
The result of Folding on my power supply even with a dust filter
@rich turtle Thanks for the answer. Didn't know they did it manually. Thought it was automated. Wonder how hard it is to automate.
@outer solar Crazy. I cleaned my main rig at the end of the month, no dust filters except PSU and there was barely any dust. Are you all negative pressure or something?
I have 2 intakes, 2 exhausts, my CPU cooler is an intake, my GPU cooler is an intake, and I can't figure out if my PSU is intake or exhaust
uhm whats folding and boinc?
@marsh crest Folding@Home is a project created by the Stanford University that uses computer power to contribute to disease research such as cancer

ohh i heard about that
but what if theyre secretly making a bot net or mining bootcoin
That'd be hard to get away with with so many eyes on the project.
but what if they were, like, extra sneaky
Everybody who uses the internet is contributing to a botnet in some way anyway
I call this one Hot Chocolate does 3.7M PPD (top card has a power limit set for obvious reasons)
nice
Oh wow. Toasty.
Does anyone know what this Quantum Cloud is? It just describes cloud computing that you get paid for but doesn't say what the computing is.

I thought it would be odd for a GPU manufacturer to be promoting crypto when crypto was basically dead and maybe it was something similar to F@H
MAN DOWN!!! caps caps caps
No, the 1080ti is in the rig
Yikes
It's because you used a Cooler Master case
It's because the drive is like 8 years old
Soon hitting a million points
I know it's not much but
Β―_(γ)_/Β―
I don't usually leave it on when I leave home and it's right next to my bed so I don't usually keep it on overnight, due to noise
Would have made it to 9 years if you hadn't had it in a Cooler Master case
Shush you
The 2080 Ti is such a beast...
New technology is always overpriced
@pseudo abyss It'll really only be used for folding and compute. Got it for $1000, so I can't complain.
Sure miss when the fat die was 500 bucks. xD though, the gtx580 was a hot bugger.
@stuck bramble https://linusdrop.tips/DGgd3Qq.png
TU102 is RTX iirc
just like GP102, 104, 106
How tf would i know that π

Why would I lie about what card it is? lol
The King doesn't need to lie
@stuck bramble the nVidia codenaming scheme has been the same a while, first letter of the arch then numbers.
2080 should have costed what 1080 TI did at launch or less, not more
You fail to notice that the RTX cards brought ray tracing to consumer cards, which is a technology that is very early in development
So what?
its been so long since 1080 TI came out
and 2080 and 1080 TI is in games almost the same peformance
Without RT
So rn as there is basically 0 RT games
you are paying more for the same peformace
I personally dont care about RT at all before it can be 60 fps and look better than it does now in a card that costs that much
if you ask me, for gaming, 2080 and 2080 TI is litterally a big waste of money
For other stuff i dont know
-
GTX 1080 Ti, the older card, retails for Β£400 now, RTX 2080 Ti, the newer card with a new technology, retails for Β£800 now
-
The RTX 1080 Ti introduces ray-tracing to the mainstream, a new technology, compared to the GTX 1080 Ti, which had nominal performance gain over its predecessor the 980 Ti
-
Through the laws of capitalism and economics, the newer product will always be more expensive
Nvidia even knew themselves that if they kept selling 1080 TI new, quite a bit of people would just get that instead of 1080, thats why they didnt
I am not saying it should be the same price as 1080 TI was now, it should be what 1080 TI was when it was new
No because that's not how currency works due to inflation and other economic behaviour
Hate to be a broken record, but ray tracing
So what?
You really think Nvidia are going to sell an RTX 2080 Ti for the same brand new price as a GTX 1080 Ti, effectively degrading their importance on ray-tracing
you can only play at 30 fps basically with it, and it doesnt even make a huge difference in look yet
exept for mirrors
and water pits
I believe a lot of people are missing the point of these newer cards
They're first-gen cards, so yes they'll be expensive, but they are only the first generation of a new technology, so Nvidia have to increase the price a bit to make back what they did on R&D and developing the technology in the first place
You're not paying for performance with these new ones
You're paying for the technology
IF they really belive in it so much, keep selling 1080 TI (they dont) then
Yes you are paying for technology if you get it, but how it should work, and how it usually work,
last gen + little bit peformance or technology = same price + inflation
to get people with last gen to upgrade
Thats not what Nvidia do
Only because fanboys will still buy it
and have something to brag about to non fanboys
(or people with just lots of money to throw away to just have the newest)
(i am talking gaming, have no idea how big or small the benefits is in non gaming tasks)
Clearly the RTX cards do heaps in Folding
I am talking spesifically with gaming as that is the marked nvidia market it for
Not exactly, the Titans are made for workstations
at least the 2080
But yes, the RTX cards are for gamers
I am not talking about titan
i havent mentioned it anywhere
Nvidia is taking advantage that AMD doesnt have anything rn to compete so much
and taking advantage of themselves stopping to sell 1080 TI so much
Right now, I'm just viewing this semi ray tracing tech as I did when physx came out. I will wait and see how it pans out. Because, fuck those prices (I can afford one or two but just nope).
Secretly hope amd can pull something like the 7970 off again (best damn 200 bucks I ever spent on a card back then)
7970 didnt cost 200? (at least when i bought it) when i got my 7970 Ghz edition, it costed about 320β¬ if I remember right
With inflation that would be 350 β¬ or something today
7970 was good card for the money and a good time for GPU prices
RIP my 7970 Ghz edition 2013-2018
Sadly, more people still bought Nvidia than AMD
I'm in the states. Barely nabbed it for that price as that was right during the first Bitcoin bubble craze
Plus, was not a GHz edition. Crap that, just flash and OC to such clocks
At least the one nice thing that can be done still to like rx480s and rx580s is the custom bios flashing
Well, can cross flash pascals and shunt mod, but that runs higher risk of making a brick
Though, toying with at least doing a shunt mod on one card here soon
Ah, got my 7970 Ghz in 2013 I think
Still funny how well those 7970s where. Considering I even had an used OG Titan and both would trade blows depending on game
Still no threats to LTT team
Now if only FedEx would pretend I want my 2080s, I could have 3M+ more ppd...
π
D: I'm still waiting on internet to be restored. Such a pain to be stuck using a darn phone
Remember that GTX 1080 I ordered November 5th? Yeah it got here 2 days ago
Glad I spent $400 on that thing lmfao
Time to sell it for $350
π
π
foe-hunnid for a 1080? i spent five-hunnid on a 1060
Hope that's not US
Aight just makin sure
good lookin out fam
Turbos are here. 2.5 - 3.1 PPD depending on WU. Been getting a lot of 14124s though. Such a gut punch of a WU in terms of PPD.
Very clean
nice
Thanks!
I can't read the signatures but Linus & Taran
I think the left one is Linus..
but tbh I can't tell π
inb4 @unique sigil just used his left hand to fake both signatures. lol
GG
lol
I say, time for dremel
Powertools, the solution to every problem
@rich turtle why blowers? And do they stay cool?
I do have a grinder somewhere..
@stiff plaza There aren't any 2080 that's don't try to kill each other basically lol
Meaning all the other ones are top card chokers. Works if you power limit the top card, but still wasn't ideal. Esp since I how have room to put in 10Gb ethernet card in here.
yeezus, how many RTX cards do you have
Quite a few.
oof
Damn, here I'm just staying on several pascals
I'm waiting out for 7nm, that way get a decent boost
I still have 4x 1080 Tis. I had 6, but two were RMA'd into 2080s.
That's a big cpu cooler
I might get one of those
I currently hit 95C at 4.1 GHz when folding or BOINC
Darn, nice that you got two switch to 2080s
So far my herd: 2x 1080tis, 2x Titan X, 1070, and one old 960
Just got the block for one of my 1080tis. The block for the other suppose to show up later
I use a gtx 1080 and a GT 750M DDR3
Although not 24/7
Not on the LTT team but hey I'm folding
Β―_(γ)_/Β―
I'm still waiting on my internet to be restored
What happened to it
Hurricane
ah
Suppose to be rehooked by the 17th or so, but the date keeps getting pushed back because of thunderstorms that keep through almost each week
I see
That's unlucky
I don't have that problem there's never any hurricanes and very rarely any thunderstorms
Yeah, at least the place I rent stayed in one piece
ah good
Weather the offset being near the gulf coast.
Worst WU ever. 1.8M on my usually 2.4-5M 2080 Ti
740363 ppd on my 1080
27400 on my 8700K lol¨
doing the 141xx
Uh
If I would do folding overnight I might want to move my setup lol
it's right next to my bed
Still no 1080 as of yet π¦
π
Darn
I can't use my pc for a while
Our circuit lost power and my parents say it's due to my pc power usage
Now I can just look at the hardware I guess
I was folding when the power went out on this floor
I did go over 1 mil points though
One PC causing a breaker to blow?
That really does not sound right
Just curious about how this is set up
Only time I hear of pcs blowing fuses is big monster rigs, but those folks tend to rewire the breakers to be on the safe side
Yeah
xD though, I have come close when for a short while my main rig was at my parents place. Aka, old single wide trailers don't have the greatest wall circuits
I mean, if he is on a 15 amp circuit and that circuit went out that would make sense. It is easily possible if you plug in a motor or something if the PC and motor are on the same circuit.
As far as I understand it
Yeah, if several items pulling from one circuit, that can cause issues
But causing issues for the whole floor.....
xD that would have to be some bad wiring or something else cause that
^
Not your PC pulling probably at most 1000 watts (if your going crazy with over clocking and possibly running multiple gpus)
Reminds me when I was down range. Had one generator powering our tent with the radios and servers. Found out quick, o boy, radios sure can pull some serious power. xD blew the fuse out of the ups
Nah it should be pulling around 300W when folding
I've no idea how the wiring is like though
If the hole floor went, one of these is true:
- The hole floor was on one single breaker and nothing else, if thats the case its an utter shit wiring.
- It was the main breaker that went, but then either ALL under it must have been right under what they can do, or it was a short and the breakers isnt set up as its supposed to
It's a single breaker
wtf
Wtf
Basement is connected to one breaker with a few fuses
Washing machines/drying machines run on the same
At least i think so?
Also fridge
Photo?
Danish?
yeah
Hello fellow scandinavian
I don't know which ones are for which floors lol
That looks really weird btw
I mean both old and new breakers/fuses
The top right is supposed to be only washing machine
i know
It's connected to the same as the top left though
I know cause there's only one of those kind of wall socket in my house
The top left is 16 A
its 4 so yes
3 phases plus neutral
but then its supposed to be more fuses after that one
I dont understand whats it
its weird
ah
Well I connected my pc to another room
I'll try folding again
no neutral on it though
Usually its first 400v fuse and then split up to at least 3 230v fuses after that (1 phase and neutral each)
I dont know
Folding again
Conclusion: That is weird wiring you have there, dont know whats going on by that photo
well i got over 1 million points now
I had it running overnight
until the power went
That is an odd wall breaker. Though, first time seeing what a wall breaker looks for a place overseas

Lol, I have 3 already @unique sigil
Maybe if you laser engrave your signature into it.
nice
so I have fah on full
but it's using the same amount of power in light and full
any ideas lol
both use about 35% cpu usage
yeah
it's only a dual core 5500u
but I assume that wouldn't matter
it's using both cores too
I don't know dude
this seems good and all
but from my 2 hours of experience with it it's either I'm doing something completely wrong or there software is really buggy lol
it's cold to the touch
windows is set to let it use max power when plugged in too
so I doubt that

Anyone else here that is still on Intel 3xxx CPU other than me?
For its 7xxx on laptop and 4xxx on desktop
My computer apart from my GPU is old, I know
power failed again
this time entire house
using my phone as a flashlight lol
nope not entire house
basement and ground floor lost power, top floor didn't
I still got like two intels in my herd: Xeon 2670V3 and a 4690K. Did have a 5960X J batch but it die in the duty of crunching. So, main rig got an early upgrade, a 1950X
π
I have a ryzen 1600 and a 4790K and a 7800HQ and some old dual core xeon
π
Ah yeah, 2nd block showed up. Now, to get everything back together and hope my internet be back up next week or so
π
I can't wait. Usually be folding and boincing, but no internet the past two months is being a pain. D: lossing spots, going to have to go full bore once my internet is back up. (Hell better be back up for next year boinc pentathlon)
Lowered the vcore to stop the thermal throttling
π
@pseudo abyss I have i7 3770
Well it probably doesnβt matter that much in gaming
4790k here
Yeah, the 4790k is a slightly better 4770k
With better TIM between the die and IHS
One of the main selling points of the 4790k was that it ran cooler than the 4770k
Ah okay
Man... I had a 4770R in the gigabyte brix. Talk about a fire breather lol
Is that a small build or a huge SSD
@pseudo abyss I have a second system with a 3570K in it
:)
Mine is just 4 Ghz rn. Overclocked it just somewhat but then didnt bother with more, yet at least
Yeah I have a spare 280mm AIO I'm gonna throw on at some point when I feel like tearing my case apart and go for broke xD
5 GHz or bust
My PC crashed and now I have two separate WUs for my CPU to fold. Is there any way to make it finish it's current one (04) and then do 03? I tried leaving it overnight but it just downloaded a new WU instead of working on 03
Finish up a WU, and remove the CPU from your config, it should clear up any WUs
Got it thanks!
@outer solar Look at you all folding guru and whatnot.
how does one get into folding and what gear do I need
just download this
and most modern cpus and gpus should be fine, at different speeds ofc
Download folding client, assign your GPU to fold, sign up with a username, get a passkey, and fire away
I vividly remember when I started folding...
I chose the most wrong time to start, because the passkey generator was down, and the EOC site was having issues
So I was staggered to 6 days after I began to properly fold after finally receiving a passkey
It didn't help that near the end of October, EOC.net's database had a reshuffle so my stats were reset
I managed to do 2018 Folding month and since then, I've been put off Folding for the incidents above
Uh, rant over, I guess
My PPD is all over the place atm.... I'm getting back into streaming so I have to take two of my GPUs offline whenever I'm folding, currently trying to think of a solution to restart folding when I stop streaming as I keep forgetting to do that
The "fold when idle" option barely works in my experience
Agreed
When I used to leave my PC on to fold while I was away to work, I left it on full power rather than idle
I only ever use the full power setting....
They really need to update the client to have options like the boinc one
Yeah b!tches
Nice
You did?
Oh
It can look like that yes
But I don't think it is
It's Taran VH
One of them is probably Jake
Because why wouldn't he sign it
@rich depot nice π
A little less than a week away from a billion!
Hoping to get it 24/7 folding tomorrow
Will have a 1080 and a 980 on 24/7
And a 980ti and 1080ti on like 16/7 due to streaming and things
Thatβs the 1080 you won right? Thatβs dope
Nice! @rich depot
Fun fact: Those signatures add an extra 100k PPD
That subtracts 100k ppd
Over a month of folding, nobody has complained about two R720s running full tilt in the DC yet...
Yet
I disagree, as soon as I added RGB strips to the inside of my case, it has easily doubled my ppd @worthy summit
Since my appartment has literally no isolation and there is quite cold outside I fold just to help radiator keep temps inside above 15Β°C
Mine dropped performance, maybe I need to look into overclocking the RGB
If Linus found a way to overclock fans, you can definitely overclock RGB. Prepare for epilepsy
I wanted him to overclock the shit out of a hard drive in that video lol
Isn't overclocking RGB just making it cycle faster?
Cereal5Today at 5:08 PM
Prepare for epilepsy
I've still yet to get 'er folding... Why must life get in the way
@rich turtle Looks like your 2080s take about 4 hours on 14124?
It takes my 750 Ti over a day to complete it lol
and my 1080 Ti is working on it also. about 5 hours for it
Overclocked RGB means higher PPD
Over volting leds can kill them
That's a risk you've gotta take if you want higher PPD
..I think I need to move my set up
Right now my desk is next to my bed and it's very loud when folding π
sounds like i am sleeping in a data center
Those 4000 rpm fans sure are loud
If you're GPU folding you can turn your power limit all the way down (it's usually 50-60% minimum) and you should only get 10-25% point reduction, and significantly better temps
Is a vega 64 better than a gtx 1080 for folding?
Other than the power consumption, but i don't really care about that
My house produces almost the same energy as it uses
π π
Vega 64 does fairly good. Not sure exact on PPD, but know a chap that folds on vegas
My 64 did anywhere from 900K to 1M
a
ah
I just found a good deal
A toy company here is selling one for cheap
Not sure why they have one but they do
Yeah, just look at tictoc over ocn, that chap folds with them undervolted and power limits unlocked. By what he posts, he gets at times to 1mil PPD, depending on WU of course
Should be similar I think
My EVGA 1080s got 900k, my STRIX ones were always 700-800k.
Idk what limited them, but they were all like that.
Probably the BIOS
Each tend to have different power limits
Like my SC and FTW3, the FTW3 can be set with a higher power limit
Ah, makes sense.
my gpu can't hit the desired power limits because of voltage issues. how do i reduce this?
it won't take anything more than +15mV offset
a nice time folding
@tame burrow Power limit simply designates the maximum amount of power that is allowed to be pulled by the card. It doesn't mean the card will always pull 120% power or something like that
So it will operate normally and draw up to whatever your power limit is, if needed.
Mine accepts 104% power limit
The "reliability voltage" is usually my limit even then
One billion!
Nice
Nice job
I haven't been folding for a while because of cpu cooler swap and trying to swap gpu

how do i join
wtf is folding? lol
@silk vigil Folding@Home is a project created by the Stanford University that uses computer power to contribute to disease research such as cancer
How it works is that someone like you can download the Folding client and configure your CPU and GPU to conduct what are known as 'work units', sets of homework that your PC does that will directly contribute to the SU's efforts in research
thats sick! (no pun intended)
It's a neat project for sure
What is the group name
Group name is LinusTechTips_Team and the ID is 223518
what is the pass key
You have to register for a passkey
You can fold without one but the point differential isn't worth it
There's a post on the forums about what it takes to start folding but I'm in the middle of a CSGO game so I can get it for you later if you want
I just started folding about a week ago and managed to get the first million points. For me it works out great to have the client fold while I'm playing games for the most part so it's nice to even be able to have it running then
Also increases the chances to find a cure for the cancer you get from games you play π
hahahaha
they take forever to complete though
It depends which WU and which GPU you specifically have
Notably the 11718 WU on my GTX 1060 takes 5-6 hours
What CPU do you have
Almost at 20 mil :D
I have an i5-7500 and a 1060 and it takes a while
Sigh... this setup usually does 3-3.3M PPD. I've been getting nothing but 14124s the last two day @ 2-2.2M PPD. Ouch.
π
Same
but this'll help
__just got a new gpu and I'm already folding with it π€ __
I'm surprised how well it does considering it's a blower card
With stock fan curve
@vernal oasis Vega 56 or 64?
Nice
It actually has same temps as my previous open air gpu
despite being a blower and higher tdp
And the inside of the case is much colder
lol
Literally lol
happy new year nz buddy
Nice
Why do both of my 1060s keep getting hit with 14124?
Seriously, that's all they've done over the last 3 days
Points are nice, but it's all for ITNOS and i guess that if they prioritize a certain research we will be hit with certain workloads. All for the greater good in my book.
Does anyone have any good recommendations for some good price to performance GPUs for folding? I have about a $150 dollar budget, used is totally fine, as long as it works I'm good
You may find a used GTX 1060 if you are lucky enough.
I bought used 1060 3GB because at the time they were a lot cheaper and should have very similar ppd
@worthy summit 70% of my workloads at any given time are now 14124. It's sometimes a 2M PPD hit lol.
@rich turtle You count your PPD in milions atlest... LOL πͺ π
yalls I just got a 7980xe and a 2080ti going with folding...
Right now it's just air cooled, but I just ordered an active aqua chiller so I will be going sub ambient soon on both the cpu and gpu
@lime vigil We want pictures of that.... π€€
^
right now its just sitting on the mobo box
ill send you some good pics once I get the chiller and blocks
nah maximus vi extreme
π
yeah its litty
I'll get a new case and a new gpu cooler soon
My gpu noise is pretty extreme right now
Yea id guess that
I think 65-70dB
My founders 1080 ti is also pretty noizy
I don't think as noisy as this
Vega 64 reference gets very loud lol
im just getting ready for the noise of a huge pump and chiller
π¬
18gpm and 27ft head pressure
Is that a little giant ?
Well they look almost the same
This is the same brand that cathar recommended when he did a huge water-cooling roundup, but way bigger than any of the ones that he tested
Is looking at expensive hardware he cant buy
hahaha
Sounds fermiliar ?
that was me for a while, I spent years saving up for this
oooof
I need moar of demn cores
understandable
I am doing way to much stuff at once
yeah, I got the 7980 after looking at puget's recommendations for lightroom and premiere systems
I like the rgb profile gif
Thanks π
well your 1080 will keep you going for a while though
yeah, that sucks
And something in my system blue screens my pc when i stream/edit videos
So i have a seprate box for streaming π
awww, that stinks
It also acts as my server
do you just intercept your display out and record that, or do you play and stream at the same time from that box?
for my media storage I'm just using google drive
I stream my screen over the network to that box and the box grabs that dispaly and everything thats on it and streams it to le interwebs
I am using NDI
If ur fermiliar with that
nice, that sounds dope
not at all
for photography and video editing I only need at most about 500gb local at once, and the rest I keep on google drive file stream, so that way I can look at it without having it local
If i reccord everything that i stream over the network then my 4TB would be full so fast π
It doesnt leave my network @vernal oasis
speaking of 4tb
yeah...
I have 10 TB local storage, 1TB cloud
damn, nice
Right now I just have two 1tb 970evos, but I want to get like a 12 or 14tb seagate exos for backups and archive type storage
π
I use a 8TB HDD and some other random hdds
nice
and an ssd for boot
I need a better backup solution because none of my drives are in raid/zfs atm
π
oof fam
what gpu you got?
Most of my pc is around 23 dB under load
Oh mine cant do that
^
right now I can't justify running a second server build
A second server build damn
google drive makes more sense for me
oof, that'll hurt your wallet
Right now I pay $50 a month for 5 gsuite accounts, and that gives me unlimited storage (so basically linus' hope google doesn't ban us video) and I use google drive file stream to sync everything
G Suite is π
