rocky badge

hushed kindle
#

are minecraft servers supposed to take up all your internet bandwidth?

rocky badge
#

No

subtle glen
#

It depends of how many players and stuff I guess

hushed kindle
#

well, here's my problem. my friend likes to play on minecraft servers, but whenever I(with a few youtube tabs open already) connect to the same(150mb/s) internet network, he claims that I "use up the internet" and he can't play at all.

subtle glen
#

Well you use some bandwidth but I dont think few yt tabs can saturate that

#

I also guess that yt is more about download and playing on mc servers is more about upload

hushed kindle
#

right, that seems logical. but we're paying for 150mb/s speeds, so don't you think that we would be able to use the same network without any problems, since I would be mostly video(download) and he would be mostly gaming(upload)

subtle glen

You would need a lot of tabs to saturate that

#

From my understanding at least?

#

While 720p have 4 Mbps recommended for upload to youtube, when you actually stream a 720p video, the actual average bitrate is something like 2 or something

1440p is recomeded upload on 16 Mbps but when you stream its actually something like average 7 or something

Hey guys. WHat sorta price would I have to spend to get a Router that's more stable (wireless) than our BT HomeHub 5? (Am in UK)

waxen scroll

well since nobody is responding, i dont keep up with consumer gear so my question is whether your wireless itself is unstable or if its the router.... if you're somewhat advanced maybe it makes sense to tell your router to stop broadcasting a signal and then add an external access point?

ubiquiti gear can be had pretty cheap

i do know that routers are getting up there... $200-300

but i cant speak for their stability since i dont use them

Hey guys! Thank you for the responses.

So our speeds are good for cabled and wireless but often things feel sluggish on our mobile devices. All of which are pretty new. I have even split out 2.4 and 5ghz. We're in a small flat so it isn't actually signal strength that's the problem.

#

And it's super stable cabled to my pc.

So I'm not particularly sure what the issue is.

Poor isp router wifi

@thick minnow I personally recommend Google Wifi or anything else supporting mesh wifi, unless you're in a small space and it's not needed

out of 100 pings, 9 of them are lost and the packets never get sent nor returned.

unreal wedge
#

Depends.

#

@lofty bone what are you pinging?

lofty bone
#

My network interface and google

#

I did a report, and this is what came out.

#

(TCP Ipv4) "previous segment not captured"

The packets requested never returned to the client from the host.

(TCP Ipv4) "TCP Keep-Alive"

The packets requested didn't arrive on time for the client.

(TCP Ipv4) "TCP Retransmission"

The packets sent, were not responded to in time, making the client re-send them.

(TCP Ipv4) "TCP Duplicate"

The packets sent, were responded upon request but multiple times of the same packet.

(TCP Ipv4) "Fast Retransmission Recovery" [RARELY HAPPENS]

A lost packet is quickly recovered in a small time frame.

(TCP Ipv4) "Portmap Failure"

The specified port wasn't open upon request, causing failure of data transferring.

(TCP Ipv4) "Out-of-order"

The requested packets were received in a order that shouldn't have had been sent in.

(TCP Ipv4) "Ignored Unknown Record"

If the MTU size set up on the WAN Interface is bigger than the real MTU size provided by the ISP, the packet with length bigger than the real MTU size will lose some bytes. Following that, in an encrypted protocol (TLS, SSL) this can cause a packet fragmented or not complete.

More than 300 of these errors were captured within 10 minutes.

In major outages, most of these errors are bundled together for 20 requests or more.

Errors recorded and monitored by Wireshark.

clear igloo

shakes fist an anger at Amazon

rocky badge

Why

clear igloo

They decided to announce they might sell networking gear now

rocky badge
#

Lol

#

Why is that bad though thinkies

clear igloo
#

Competition is bad m'kay

rocky badge
#

Oh

clear igloo
#

When I say sell, I mean make their own to compete with other vendors

rocky badge
#

WHAT

#

So AmazonBasics stuff?

clear igloo
#

Something like that

#

Amazon Enterprise Switches and Routers ๐Ÿ˜›

rocky badge
#

Why....

clear igloo
#

I'm not worried, just annoying because a bunch of stops dropped like rocks after that announcement

rocky badge
#

Lol

#

Wonders why no display output

VGA cable not plugged in

clear igloo

lol

rocky badge

I should've screwed it in

Oh well

waxen scroll
#

oh for fucks sake amazon

#

so @rocky badge i have $20,000 at risk right

#

amazon announces something that affects the stock

  • 10% value in one day
#

amazon are assholes

rocky badge
#

LMAO

waxen scroll
#

what happens too is months later they'll go "oh, it wasnt realistic"

#

then months after that "nm, were doing it again"

#

stocks of other companies go crazy

subtle glen
#

@waxen scroll took one day only to download r6s

at 1.2 MB/s of peak

#

did you got pf sense?

waxen scroll
#

no, you did

subtle glen

aaaaa

no

#

i kinda left the project

rocky badge

wow

subtle glen
#

now that i know that subnet thing, it would probably work

clear igloo
#

@waxen scroll Yah, they said 18 months at least so I'm of the opinion that we'll see how it goes. They are like Google a lot of the time, something doesn't happen fast enough they give up on it pretty quick

subtle glen
#

lol i want to see these amazon switches

rocky badge
#

Usually Google products die after a while ๐Ÿ˜„

subtle glen

hope they will have a good complete web gui ๐Ÿ˜€

im wondering, do old people in the USA watch work in progress in the street too?

waxen scroll

of course, we have to commute in it every morning

rocky badge
#

@clear igloo I'm using ad.ryois.me for my AD.... funny thing is the domain controller... it's ad.ad.ryois.me

waxen scroll
#

thats how it works

rocky badge
#

Yeah

waxen scroll

:\

rocky badge
#

I should've made my domain controller something else

waxen scroll

silly blobby

rocky badge
#

like dc

waxen scroll
#

nah

#

you have to do it proper

like WD0001P

rocky badge

waxen scroll

Windows Domain controller server ID 1, Production

clear igloo

WDC00001PDNU

waxen scroll

its not a stupid name, the name scales

#

not only does it scale theres tons of useful info in the name

rocky badge
#

xD

waxen scroll
#

and its not long

clear igloo
#

Yah, but for @rocky badge he'll forget it by tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜›

rocky badge
#

Nah

waxen scroll
#

for routers... rdilchicago-mpls-a, ricnshangh-vpn-a

#

SO MUCH GOOD INFO IN THE NAME.... capcapca pcapcap

rocky badge
#

XD

waxen scroll
#

oh fuck, i havent told this story yet

#

@clear igloo will love it

clear igloo
#

lol, oh boy ๐Ÿ˜„

waxen scroll
#

maybe i have, idk

#

so at big D, i think you know what i mean

#

lol

rocky badge
#

What

waxen scroll
#

they told me "yeah, we're not using "i" (for international) in any name... it will make the international sites feel excluded and far away"

#

i was like GET THE FUCK OUT... what? go away

rocky badge
#

Lol

waxen scroll
#

"d" (for domestic) meant USA

#

you cannot pull that naming convention off unless you seperate i and d

#

because of overlap on country codes

#

like IL for illinois and israel

#

so i lost that battle and just said screw it, we're not normalizing names

clear igloo
#

Why not country + province/state/etc?

#

or does that upset someone else?

waxen scroll
#

hostnames need to be kept short for various reasons

clear igloo
#

Ah, true

waxen scroll
#

but you can basically guess

#

oh i want to touch hong kong

#

super easy!

#

guess it

#

the only variable is the -a at the end

#

multiple sites? -a, -b, -c

#

just guess it

rocky badge
#

๐Ÿ˜„

#

My school uses the school's code at the end of the hostname, or the beginning

waxen scroll
#

people think its annoying or hard, but seriously after doing it for a little bit its stupid easy to remember whose -a -b whatever in a global network

#

plus you should have visios if you truely dont know

#

the only time i wouldnt do that is if you had a crapload of non-campus sites that will make you pass z

#

then i might think of a different name

#

but if you have 50 sites in IL you're not going to name them all chicago

#

you'll use the city they're actually in

#

so in summary... please dont name your server "ad" or after lord of the rings

vagrant heath
waxen scroll
rocky badge
#

I don't use pi-hole anymore

vagrant heath
#

Why not?

rocky badge
#

Broke stuff like ESXi ๐Ÿ˜„

vagrant heath
#

You have to whitelist stuff.

rocky badge
#

True...

vagrant heath

(also none of my hardware goes through Pi-Hole)

#

The rest of the house does.

rocky badge

Ah

waxen scroll

im nice, i dont mess with anyones internet

no QoS or throttle even

;p

rocky badge

๐Ÿ˜„

waxen scroll

it works out, nobody has issues

vagrant heath

But I want that bandwidth that's going to ad's

#

That's MY bandwidth

clear igloo
#

That bandwidth belongs to the advertisers, stop stealing money from them!
/s

vagrant heath
#

Also. If you have a Datacap. That's 37% of your data allowance

rocky badge
#

@clear igloo What do you think of Cisco Small Business switches?

#

@vagrant heath Lol, datacaps

vagrant heath
#

The tabletop ones or the rack ones

rocky badge
#

Desktop switch

#

It's for my room

vagrant heath
#

So tabletop

rocky badge
#

Yeah ๐Ÿ˜„

#

SF110D-08 in particular

vagrant heath
#

I don't see a reason to get one of them. It's cheaper to get a dumb switch with VLAN support

rocky badge
#

I don't need VLAN support

clear igloo
#

If you are getting it for free/dirt cheap then sure but I wouldn't go out of my way or anything

vagrant heath
#

^^

rocky badge
#

Ok ;-;

#

Any recommendations on black tabletop 8 port gigabit switches?

#

I really want it to be black ๐Ÿ˜„
My current one stands out from its grey color

vagrant heath
#

Don't buy Unmanaged Switches from Cisco. They are overpriced. I love Cisco. but they are for the enterprise.

rocky badge
#

Yeah

vagrant heath
#

You buy Cisco for IOS

clear igloo
#

What you really need is an ASR9922 with some RP2s, 32x100GbE linecards, and high speed fabrics

rocky badge
#

Lmao

#

I don't think I want an ASR9922 in my room ๐Ÿ˜„

clear igloo
#

Yes you do

#

VROOOOMMMM!!!!!!! caps caps caps caps

rocky badge
#

๐Ÿ˜„

clear igloo
#

So you just need a black unmanaged switch then?

rocky badge
#

Yes

vagrant heath
#

just paint it?

rocky badge
#

I suck at painting

#

Plus I'd need to buy black paint

vagrant heath
rocky badge
#

Hmm

rocky badge
#

Cheap plastic, yey

subtle glen
#

not even gbit

#

85% of the switches are black

waxen scroll
#

thats racist

subtle glen
#

LOL

#

Thats why cisco makes blue-ish switches

#

To fight racism

vagrant heath
#

All my switches a metal.

#

fuck plastic crap

rocky badge
#

Lol

subtle glen
#

My cisco one are metal

#

And a tp link one

#

The rest, plastic

rocky badge
#

Plastic

vagrant heath
#

I have a dumb gigabit netgear switch that is black plastic.

subtle glen
#

Yes, blobby, plastic

vagrant heath
#

But that's just because I needed a switch and that's what I had on hand

rocky badge

OOF

ur tv has a dick

rocky badge

Lol

subtle glen

run cables

#

now i realized that in the middle the night, if the power goes out and comes back, the switch will restart and go VRRRRRRR ๐Ÿ˜

#

my mom wont be so happy if it happens

clear igloo
#

lol, yah

subtle glen
#

now when i go to sleep i always think about that

#

maybe its time to connect it to the ups

clear igloo
#

probably a good idea

subtle glen
#

the ups will beep till the power comes back but i guess its better

rocky badge
#

It's better than 5 switches going VRRRRR

subtle glen
#

do you have a switch with a fan that has bad bearings

#

so annoying

rocky badge
#

One time the power going to the racks got cut off some how and all they started using UPS power

subtle glen
#

and everything went BEEP BEEP BEEP

rocky badge
#

Well... The UPSes lasted for 15 minutes because all of the APs, switches, etc drew power from the UPSes

#

So in 15 minutes the whole school went Internet-less

#

Because that rack was the MDF

subtle glen
#

no generators?

rocky badge
#

And where the fiber line came in

#

Another time the building where the ESXi hosts were went down....

subtle glen
#

my school has no ac in its server room and you can hear from the outside all the servers going VRRRRRRRR

#

"server room", its just a room with stuff in it

#

30 degrees celsius outside and no ac in the server room ๐Ÿ‘Œ

#

does your school have generators or something

#

or just ups

rocky badge
#

UPSes

#

We rarely loose power and we don't need generators

subtle glen
#

you never know

#

a substation transformer could blow up and leave you without power for 13 hours

#

based on a true story

rocky badge
#

Last time power went out was April of 2018

#

Before that was August of 2017

subtle glen
#

or someone can just go to the breaker box and shut everything down

rocky badge
#

That's easy to fix

subtle glen
#

what if

#

someone shut down the power and locks the breaker panel

rocky badge
#

We have keys

subtle glen

put my own lock

hehe

rocky badge

those arent connected if one blew up and took down half of the city
