loud lance
#

cause each server will be using 4gbps

#

so that means I can run two servers at 8gbs

#

to the server

#

instead of 1 server using 10gbs

#

I'm not sure if I'm correct.

rocky badge
#

The 5324 is 24x GbE

loud lance
#

yeah

#

so that means

#

4 ethernet cables

#

4gbps?

rocky badge
#

Aggregation ?

loud lance
#

yeah

#

wait

#

even better

#

hold on

#

one of the r710s has 8 ethernet ports

#

two x2 port gigabit cards

#

pcie

rocky badge
#

The 2848s are 48 GbE

loud lance
#

and then the onboard 4 port

#

but are they managed?

#

or unmanaged switches?

rocky badge
#

All Dell PowerConnect switches are managed iirc

loud lance
#

oh dope

#

so I'll be able to use vlans

for the first time too

#

great

There's their new switches

those are nice

#

@loud lance Hope your ubiquiti equipment is fun for you.
UniFi switches are controlled by a unifi controller.
Edgemax switches do more, but are meant to be standalone.
I'm probably getting a 48 port edge switch myself (maybe I might get unifi...still debating)
You don't need the cloud key, it's possible to run unifi controller on a PC / server (24/7 if you want data logs)

#

Cloud key is good for networks where there isn't a PC available to run 24/7 and for remote access / assistance.

I don't do juniper, couldn't say

#

In theory you can do whatever the hell you want

subtle glen
#

by looking at the interface thing there was just few basic interface info

#

maybe i was watching in the wrong section

loud lance
#

Got it @rocky badge

#

I got rails for it all too, I just threw everything just there so I could make some room.

Nice @loud lance

Yeah, walked out 1,120$

For all that in pic

No u

THATS was a proper server rack is for

Keys and everything so they cant

#

Then you cage off the breaker box so they can’t turn it off from main

and also put the breaker that is connected via wifi and sends you a notification to tell the power is out

#

you can even turn on the breaker remotely from the phone

I have a pretty complex question if anyone wants to help me tackle it. So, I have a Dell R710 server that I installed Windows Server 2012 R2 on the bare metal, but I'm scared of bit-rot and I was wanting to do something different and properly setup the server by putting Linux on it. So my question is would it be a good idea to install UnRaid on the bare metal and turn my existing Windows Server 2012 R2 install into a VM and use it that way? Does UnRaid use ZFS or BTRFS or whatever the file system that has the bit-level parity? These SAS Drive I just spent $500 on for this server are brand spanking new. Like no hours on the drives, but I just wanted to set these drives up right since their new so that if/when any go out, I'm prepared.

waxen scroll
#

i cant answer that, but esxi is still compatible with r710 for now and is free. not sure if you need unraid for a specific reason

waxen scroll
#

pretty sure all dell r710 has some type of raid card

#

even if its just an onboard one

meager creek
#

I more or less was wanting some type of linux host that supports the ZFS/BTRFS (Or whatever FS that allows me to have the bit-level parity to prevent Bit-Rot) and then use that to host a VM of my windows server so that I have snapshots and whatnot. I just want to protect against bit-rot on these drives as I've had to fight with it once before. I had video files be fine one day, and then out of no where gone. And the RAID card wasn't even aware of it.

#

Since I see Linus always using UnRAID I figured I'd try it out.

#

I like the WebGUI it has.

slow pivot
#

Backups are pretty much the only sure way to prevent bit rot/loss/etc

slow pivot
#

I don't think they have ecc

#

Oh ok, apparently they do, at least a the sector level. I guess that makes sense given they can detect bad sectors

#

But i always thought that was done on write with a readback

slow pivot
#

I have some experience, but no stun experience πŸ˜›

waxen scroll
#

TIL someone made a service for it. pretty sure it was only a protocol that you can put in your applications prior

waxen scroll
#

i had to troubleshoot this for a game company that used UDK but since i couldnt see the code in UDK i guess epic had to correct something

#

GggGGgGg

#

@clear igloo and to troubleshoot it, i had to open this very RFC and read it all

#

i dont remember shit about it tho LOL

clear igloo
#

@waxen scroll So I guess you were STUNed by it?

Yah, I saw the news

Talk about patent infringement

waxen scroll

i had some LOLs myself

#

we have a stock purchase program

i get a 10% discount

the stock dipped 9% the next morning

technically havent lost my own money yet but hows that for luck

clear igloo

yah

We've got the same thing

limit to 10% of paycheck but it's free money with the discount πŸ˜ƒ

waxen scroll

im not doing the paycheck thing

im staging bulk money over a small period of time to try to limit risk and get my free money and run

i just call them up, order it, then give them a check

#

Nice, that's a good plan πŸ˜ƒ

lean pollen
#

My mum had a problem where on her ipad TV stream cut out quite a lot

#

My dad said something like "Oh, it must be the 5 Ghz thing, because its less ability to go trough walls than 2.4 Ghz"

#

I said it wasnt

#

The actual reason?

#

iOS switching between WIFIs being utter shit

#

It had both 5 and 2.4 as remembered wifi

#

it kept switching between them regulary

#

and every time the connection got lost and the stream started to load/cut out

#

Pressing forget on 2.4 fixed it, and internet connection works without dropping

waxen scroll
#

i learned two things.... one is that combining 2.4/5ghz into one SSID doesnt work well because devices suck.... two is that android will guess the password of other SSIDs with similar names ex: Lurick and Lurick_5G. If the 5g signal is lower than 2.4 it might guess the password for 2.4 and switch to that, even if the speed is worse

#

forgetting doesnt work because it will guess again

#

dunno about IOS

lean pollen
#

It was two different SSID

#

Forget works on iOS but if it was coded as it should be

#

It shouldnt actually switch between them at all

#

My phone stays at 5Ghz all the time

#

even if it have the password for both

#

From what I have seen

waxen scroll
#

wheres the iOS expert from LMG? lets get them in here

lean pollen
#

Either that or it switches so fast that the connection isnt lost

waxen scroll
#

your dads right about 5ghz tho

#

it doesnt do well with walls

#

my house has the same problem

lean pollen
#

I know

#

but thats not the reason for the problems like he did think

waxen scroll
#

im too lazy and cheap to get multiple APs going

lean pollen
#

5 Ghz is more than good enough for one single wooden wall

slate lion
#

@clear igloo Comcast. Were looking at the Netgear CM1000

thick minnow
#

5ghz dont do well with wood

clear igloo
#

@slate lion If you just need a modem, I recommend the SB8200

slate lion
#

@clear igloo I was looking into DOCSIS and 3.1 seemed to be significantly better than than DOCSIS 3.0

clear igloo
#

If you're doing gigabit you basically need a docsis 3.1 modem

slate lion
#

yeah, thats what were doing

#

@clear igloo

clear igloo
#

Yah, then the SB8200 or the CM1000 are both good. I've used the SB8200 and it was wonderful, haven't used the CM1000 but I've heard good things about it too

subtle glen
slow pivot
#

not that I am aware of

#

normally the two signals are in different frequency bands; that just splits a signal and attenuates one more than the other

subtle glen
#

but the tv signals and the modem one comes from the same cable or no?

slow pivot
#

yes; the same cable can transmit on many different frequencies at the same time

#

well, you can transmit different signals at different frequencies at the same time on the same cable

subtle glen
#

and how do you "separate the 2" to avoid getting interferences?

#

or that doesnt happen

#

here we use those adsl filters to avoid getting strange noises coming out of the phone due to modem signals (and vice versa: the modem gets only its signal). Now there are fiber modems where you plug in your phone and that does everything. But we still use them

slow pivot
#

those filter boxes literally block certain frequency(ies) from the phone or the modem (I forget which, maybe both)

subtle glen
#

do you use a similar setup?

waxen scroll
#

no

#

mine always has boosters in it

subtle glen
#

could you (people that get internet via coax) share a picture or a scheme? cause i cant understand πŸ™„

waxen scroll
#

you dont need to split signals

#

silly

#

the modem uses the same shit as the cable box does

subtle glen
#

well i dont know how those american systems work....

#

do you just use normal splitters to connect the tv's and the modem? to the coax coming from the street?

waxen scroll
#

yes

subtle glen
#

ok

waxen scroll
#

however mine is more complicated

#

street wire -> splitter

#

splitter A port -> modem

#

splitter b port -> booster

#

booster -> another splitter

#

another splitter -> all the TV jacks

subtle glen
#

and what about cordless phones? do they have a different cable or they are connected to the modem and use VOIP

waxen scroll
#

in most american VOIP from the cable company its cat3/RJ-11 cable from your phone to the company supplied modem

subtle glen
#

oh ok so there isnt another cable for the phone coming from the street. You connect it to the modem

waxen scroll
#

right

#

and what they do for houses is they try to cut your connection to the land line company and terminate it into the cable modem

#

that way all phones will work

subtle glen
#

so all the origina house plugs will be connected to the modem and you can plug the phone in every one of them?

waxen scroll
#

yeah

subtle glen
#

thats smart actually

waxen scroll
#

i have my phones in patch panels so that i can easily patch them between VOIP from the cable company or use the line land company

#

all it takes is moving a patch cable

#

simple

subtle glen
#

in case you change isp and there is no VOIP?

waxen scroll
#

but right now i use neither service because my parents moved out

#

yeah

subtle glen
#

ah ok

rocky badge
#

not using VoIP

subtle glen
#

here we use coax for different things, not for internet

#

thanks for the explanation

#

i should be using it but the isp made a mistake while checking my adress for fiber coverage

waxen scroll
#

my patch cable i made

subtle glen
#

so they gave me a new modem with voip for nothing

waxen scroll
#

each RJ-11 represents a line #

#

so i can have up to 4 lines in my house

subtle glen
#

ahh you took an eth cable and spliced it up

waxen scroll
#

yep

subtle glen
#

the patch panel is rj11 right?

waxen scroll
#

RJ-45

#

the modem would be RJ-11

subtle glen
#

oh ok

waxen scroll
#

so i either use this special patch wire for VOIP, or i have another patch panel port called "TO ATT" so i patch a wire in there and then a wire in the "all phones" port

subtle glen
#

seems like a nice setup

#

is this in the basement or some kind?

waxen scroll
#

yes

subtle glen
#

interesting

#

today i saw a lot of fiber cables on the ground, new fiber manholes and stuff kinda close to my house

#

and this company is trying to provide ftth to everyone

#

lets hope for the best

#

the max connection i could get now is 30 mbps. hope they ftth my building

waxen scroll
#

as soon as i move out the next person is probably going to let comcast or whoever just trash this setup

#

lol

rocky badge
#

Oof

waxen scroll
#

@subtle glen you already saw the rack right?

subtle glen
#

what rack πŸ˜‚

#

comcast is what, an isp?

subtle glen
#

cool

#

those are the "phone cables"

#

the blue one?

waxen scroll
#

port 1 is "all phones" and has the RJ-11 converter in it now... if i wire port 1 to port 2 it switches to land line provider instead

subtle glen
#

whats that empty switch

waxen scroll
#

its what i used for a few years before i bought the new one

subtle glen
#

and the black box below is something similar to the ubiquiti security gateway?

waxen scroll
#

its just a ubiquiti router

subtle glen
#

oh ok, and the white box is the coax modem

waxen scroll
#

yes

subtle glen
#

do those boxes only act as modem or they have a crappy router built in

waxen scroll
#

only modem

subtle glen
#

ohhhh

rocky badge
#

EWWWWWWW the Ubiquiti USG

subtle glen
#

here they give you the modem that is also a router (4port switch, and ap included aswel)

waxen scroll
#

i have another patch panel next to this rack but i have to open the screws first before i can get a picture

rocky badge
#

That's called a wifi router and modem combo...

subtle glen
#

they call it modem

#

i know its not just a modem...

#

if we want to be picky we can say its a modem/router/access point/switch

#

oh, some like mine also include usb sharing

#

and a wan port

waxen scroll
#

this box handles most of my coax and also this is where the "all phones" patch wire goes to

#

the phones plug into that RJ-45 panel

subtle glen
#

ah alright

#

i see the booster

#

and splitters

#

does the booster need a power supply?

waxen scroll
#

yes, the power supply is connected via coax as well

subtle glen
#

wut

waxen scroll
#

cable porn

subtle glen
#

lol

rocky badge
#

does a booster need power

subtle glen
#

whats that white thing

waxen scroll
#

the white thing is a 4G to POTS converter for an alarm

subtle glen
#

no offence but blobby dont be annoying

#

here older phones get power from the phone line and dont need a power supply

#

i dont have this kind of equipment, i dont know how it works

waxen scroll
#

yes

subtle glen
#

and you can have a coax cable going from that thing into a random port of the splitter or it has to go directly to the booster?

waxen scroll
#

has to go to booster

subtle glen
#

alright

#

ahhh i wish i had a basement

waxen scroll
#

another patch panel of mine

#

so many wires

subtle glen
#

WOOO what is this

#

i guess some kind of AC panel?

waxen scroll
#

house has 4 thermostats and i can turn on/off heat/AC per zone

subtle glen
#

what does the emergency heat button does πŸ‘€ πŸ‘€

waxen scroll
#

never tried it, i guess it does what it says

#

press it and heat turns on

rocky badge

subtle glen

i already got shocked in there: the breaker was old and there is no groudning wre

#

@rocky badge its not that easy

subtle glen
#

i could do it inside my garage but i would have to find a way to break concrete

it is

or use the power cable manhole outside of my garage but i would have to ask permission to the condo

why

#

Anyone here good with DELL SAN? if so could use some urgent help

slow pivot
#

I had an older Dell SAN a couple of years ago, what's up?

loud lance
#

Well, I picked one up off craiglist, I got about 14TB in storage.

#

but I'm not sure how to configure it

#

it has 3 IPS for all 3 ports

#

192.168.10.30

#

192.168.11.31

#

and 192.168.10.31

#

and I've tried everything to use it

#

I'm not sure how to configure it, use it, or anything

slow pivot
#

I'm trying to remember if is is IP-managed or there is a serial console

#

ooh

loud lance
#

I don't see any serial ports, etc.

#

It's a DELL MD3000i

slow pivot
#

hang on, can you take a picture of the back of the unit?

loud lance
#

sure, give me a second.

#

It’s blinking orange too on the system health

slow pivot
#

So the iScsis ports are for data, so it is the separate port in each controller that you use to configure it

loud lance
#

Yeah, and I tried using the software but it can’t find it

#

And I’m not sure how to factory reset it

slow pivot
#

ah fuck

#

you didn't get a SAS HBA controller or two with that, did you? πŸ˜ƒ

loud lance
#

Nope

slow pivot
#

The one I had was an older model that used Fibre channel

#

Then it's probably worthless

loud lance
#

I can’t do it over Ethernet?

slow pivot
#

It requires an HBA that talks SAS over iScsi to it

#

nope

loud lance
#

Damn, so how would I configure it?

slow pivot
#

Well, wait

#

Yes, it uses ethernet to connect the HBAs to the SAN unit

#

oh, hum

loud lance
slow pivot
#

apparently I'm wrong, you can use it directly with VMWare ESXi's iScsi initiator

loud lance
#

there's the devices on the unifi controller

#

that is what happens

slow pivot
#

also, I don't think that 3rd "ethernet" port is an ethernet port.. I think it might be a serial console

loud lance
#

this is a mindfuck

#

thats for sure

#

I thought these things were plug and play tbh

slow pivot
#

hmm, ok well if you didn't get the serial console cable, you'll need that apparently

#

that looks like a DB-9 to PS/2 style connector

loud lance
#

oh boy

slow pivot
#

yup! that's it

#

yikes, that's an expensive cable

loud lance
#

Yeah...

#

considering i spent $380 on a ubiquiti switch today

#

doesn't help the bank

slow pivot
#

Hopefully the shipping isn't as butt-reking for you as it was for me (46$!!!)

#

For that cable I mean

loud lance
slow pivot
#

Ah, much better

loud lance
#

How would I type though?

slow pivot
loud lance
#

Don't I need a PS2 cable for keyboard?

slow pivot
#

You need a serial to USB

loud lance
#

o

slow pivot
#

no, it uses the PS/2 connector, but it is a serial port connection

loud lance
#

so would I plug the serial port connection into another dongle?

slow pivot
#

so, the PS/2 plug on that cable you linked to a DB-9 on the other end of the cable to a serial to USB converter to your computer

#

and you use some sort of serial console software to talk to it

loud lance
#

what about video?

slow pivot
#

it's a terminal, you get both input/output from the same cable

loud lance
#

why are sans so difficult holy fuck

slow pivot
#

well, they are pro hardware

#

generally not used by the mortal person πŸ˜ƒ

#

Also, you might want to invest in a UPS for the server that SAN will be connected to, as well as that SAN

#

Think of a SAN as a bunch of disks running in a dumb enclosure outside of your server

#

Power fails, its the same as taking any external disk while it's writing and yanking the power

#

worse if there's any sort of RAID going on

subtle glen
#

I want fiber 😭 πŸ’¦

elfin gust
#

Me too, my ISP has it, but they want me to do a new contract as if I never was a user of their service and charge new fees as a new customer... nope, thanks. currently at 50mbps, enough, for now...

tawny seal
#

i have 72 mbps about

elfin gust
#

i want 150mpbs (fiber), is 10 bucks more than my current isp bill (vdsl2), but i have to sub as a new customer and pay a whooping 300 bucks in fees... πŸ˜‘

waxen scroll
#

you do if all he has is POTS

#

πŸ˜„

subtle glen
#

the max i can have is 30 mbps cause the isp kinda covers m street ( lets say that i live in Riccardo 4 street, the isp put 100 mbps fiber in riccardo street but not in riccardo 4 street)

waxen scroll
#

the max i can have is 2000mbps

subtle glen
#

ffs

waxen scroll
#

i dont wanna PAY tho

subtle glen
#

i mean here if someone has the 100mbps fiber is considered a GOD, in the place you live 100 is the minimum...

#

why?

tawny mulch

how much for 2000mbps

waxen scroll
#

they run 10G fiber to your house

subtle glen

OMG

#

can i live in the basement

#

wha

#

😍

#

something i like about italian isp is that 1 gbps fiber is at the same price for the internet i have

#

fiber here doesnt cost anything

#

1 gbps for 24.90 per month

#

that also include activation costs

#

24.90 for everything and for ever

waxen scroll
#

i wanna order fiber just so i can be a bawler

#

but that 2 year and $300/m

#

i could get a sports car

subtle glen

waxen scroll

all of that gets boring after a year

subtle glen
#

what would you like to do as a network engineer

waxen scroll
#

i was just a datacenter tech, so not really networking there... did cable runs for networking though

subtle glen
#

thats fun for me 😊

waxen scroll
#

as a network engineer i want to engineer... cables, physical hardware, and basic troubleshooting are someone elses problem

#

πŸ˜„

subtle glen
#

what would you like to do, i mean where would you like to work

#

and why cant i find my phone rack

waxen scroll
#

i only apply to companies with 10,000 or more employees, they need to have an actual network team with more than just me doing my job (important for vacations), and they need to not have me take tickets or do support unless its really bad. i prefer working for the pharmaceutal industry because they have money and arent as stressful as working for a bank

subtle glen
#

what about an enterprise

#

such as ricoh or whatever

waxen scroll
#

we are 8 people on my team alone, but the network team itself has maybe 50

subtle glen
waxen scroll
#

these are enterprises, i only work at enterprises

#

πŸ˜„

subtle glen
#

eh

waxen scroll
#

large companies break up the network team... so i dont need to deal with cables, support, physical hardware, etc

subtle glen
#

you can be my private network engineer

#

i can pay you 5 a month

#

dollars

#

or gummy bears it depends

waxen scroll
#

im at 100k+ range

#

many companies cant even afford me

#

lol

subtle glen
#

lol

#

cant touch this

#

but where is my phone line rack πŸ€”

#

i cant find it

waxen scroll

we have like 8,000 buildings to network that belong to the company

#

thats a real # not making that up for the sake of example

today i took pictures of the building power room

#

#

@thick minnow yeah in africa they are gold

waxen scroll

i do take pics for reference reasons, but i delete them later and dont share them

subtle glen

all the racks nearby dont have those numbers. I hope im not directly connected to the isp

waxen scroll
#

with POTS its a direct connect i think

#

my POTS knowledge is a little weak

subtle glen
#

the fiber optic ones?

waxen scroll
#

if you have fiber at the curb i think they redirect the POTS there for vdsl

subtle glen
#

its max 30 mbps here, there is no 100mbps fiber so i think im not even hooked up to those copper to fiber dslam

waxen scroll
#

DSL cant do 100mbit

#

afaik

subtle glen
#

this keep getting hit by cars

#

@waxen scroll VDSL 2 enhanced could do 350 mbps over copper

lean pollen
#

I have 120 over coax

subtle glen
#

350 down and 100 up but you gotta be in a 250 meters range from the rack

lean pollen
#

Was like 75 year or two ago for the same price

#

Only 15 up tho

subtle glen
#

coax maybe is different from the type of copper cable we use

waxen scroll
#

my phone company can only offer 25mbit DSL out here, its a joke.... the cable company is probably eating their market share alive

lean pollen
#

How far it goes over coax I don't know

subtle glen
#

i dont know how far is my isp too

#

cause if its like 1.5/2 km away and im directly connected to them via copper...

#

there is still hope, i discovered that open fiber is adding more fiber near where i live and i know that they are in collaboration with the power company and use their substations/power conduits for ftth

#

and near my house there are 4 substations 😊

TASTY

subtle glen

ikr

#

thats what i call fast charge for my phone

loud lance
#

does everything here look good?

#

It shows on my ISP list of supported modems, but why am I only getting 1.4mbp/s down? I get 100down on my ISP issued one built into the router?

#

It shows up on the compatibility list as supports 100mbps

waxen scroll
#

i mean probably not

#

lol

#

mines the opposite in power

#

if you used all the same wiring i'd assume the signal wouldnt be that far off

loud lance
#

Yeah, used the same coax going into the box.

#

in fact because our cable boxes need the same coax, I split it into 2

#

so one goes into the new modem, and one goes into the cable box.

#

but when I disconnect the cable box I still get the capped speeds of 1.4mbps

#

after a reboot

waxen scroll
#

did you call the cable company after installing the new modem?

#

many of them need you to give them your mac address before the service will even work

#

perhaps its not being provisioned with your accounts speeds

loud lance
#

I'll try that, that seems like it could work.

loud lance
#

@waxen scroll doing some digging, it seems as if you are correct. WOW sends all new modems to walledgarden.wowway.com, you are allowed 1.4mbp/s down that is it. It's because it's unconfigured and WOW cannot push updates or link it to any account with a proper download speed until the new mac address is in their system.

#

they have to push a .bin file over to the modem once it's configured in their system, and I should have my speeds of 100 down and 10 up. so when the account holder is available, I'll be doing that.

waxen scroll
#

nice. terrible name, wowway

loud lance
#

Yeah, they go by many names.

waxen scroll
#

huawei would not like that name being used

loud lance
#

WOW!, wowway, and wideopenwest.

#

they're all over the place

#

so hopefully once I get that all setup, I should be able to port forward instead of being double nat'ed.

#

I spend over $500 ubiquiti gear, and decided to ditch my built in cable modem too.

waxen scroll
#

my provider doesnt make you call anymore

#

it just brings you to a login screen and it will activate

wispy plover
#

WOW purchased all of the coax infrastructure that Ameritech created in the 90s when they decided they wanted to do phone and cable tv. When they went back to being AT&T (around that time, anyway), they sold it all off wanting nothing to do with cable. WOW got most of it, but my area Comcast is who got it.

subtle glen

kind of. In the folder there are 3 sub folders and each of them should go to a specific library on plex. Only one of the subfolders got added corectly to its specific library. The others dont work. I can add all the folder but that would add all the videos into a single library

and if i add all the files to a library and delete the one that should not be there it says that i cannot delete them

and this doesnt

clear igloo

rocky badge

clear igloo

I assume latency will be better than your current stuff but will the speed increase to justify the price?

subtle glen
#

tf

#

how can you not benefit from fiber optics

rocky badge
#

Depends if fiber is cheaper

#

Or same price

clear igloo
#

If it's the same price for the same speed, then it's not a bad move for the lower latency

subtle glen
#

also i think that having a fiber line is also for future things

maybe they will increase the speed etc
