@clear igloo show me that once I get home

#

I want to play with ESXi

#

Lol

waxen scroll
#

you need a dedicated server for ESXi

clear igloo
#

^

waxen scroll
#

do you have that?

rocky badge
#

Yeah ik

#

Yed

waxen scroll
#

๐Ÿ˜„

rocky badge
#

*yes

clear igloo
#

What server do you have?

rocky badge
#

I'm not that dumb

clear igloo
#

If it's too old then you might be SOL

rocky badge
#

Yeah

clear igloo
#

Have to dig through and find an old ESXi version that supports it which isn't fun

rocky badge
#

Oof

#

@clear igloo browsing the internet with 600Kbps isn't fun

clear igloo
#

Yah, stuff takes forever

rocky badge
#

You're used to gigabit

#

Sush

clear igloo
#

I'm used to low latency

rocky badge
#

I'm used to Google searches to be instant

#

Not talking more than 5 seconds

waxen scroll
#

in my day dynamic web content wasnt a thing

rocky badge
#

Oooooooof

clear igloo
#

I was born into the dial-up, shaped by it, molded by it's scream

#

I didn't have high speed internet until I was your age

rocky badge
#

Ooof

#

I've never had dial up

Do you have a link for it ?

waxen scroll
#

why cant you buy the asus 10Gb for cheaper?

slim forum
#

It's only 2 ports

#

This has 8

waxen scroll
#

So, links ? Pls ?

rocky badge

Price seems to have gone up since I bought it.

clear igloo

That's not bad

slim forum
#

Yeah. I'm just glad the fans don't scream.

rocky badge
#

Idk how Iโ€™m gonna do the network for a new house

waxen scroll
#

im not a fan of any switch that uses Christmas tree lights

#

v_v

rocky badge
#

Lol

clear igloo
#

New house? @rocky badge you buying a house at 14?!

rocky badge
#

No

waxen scroll
#

put the damn light under the ports

rocky badge
#

My parents

#

I canโ€™t buy a house yet

clear igloo
#

Gotta get some more people to work the street for you then!

rocky badge
#

Lol

#

Idk how Iโ€™m gonna do it tho

#

I want 10Gb to some clients

#

And gigabit to the rest

clear igloo
#

Buy some Cat8 cable, few thousand bucks and you're set ๐Ÿ˜›

waxen scroll
#

when i was 12 we didnt have 10Gb, we had RJ-11 network cards and liked it

rocky badge
#

Oof

#

Youโ€™re old /s

clear igloo
#

We had 9600 baud modems and we liked it that way!

#

28K was lightning fast!

rocky badge
#

Wot

waxen scroll
#

they looked like modems but used your homes rj-11 wiring for an IPX network

rocky badge
#

Iโ€™ve never touched rj-11 lmao

waxen scroll
#

i was on windows 98 when i had these i think

rocky badge
#

I never touched win 98

clear igloo
#

Windows 95 with the tree background was the best

rocky badge
#

Iโ€™ve only used Vista, 8.1, and 10

slim forum
#

I'll never look back. I finally kicked all these hard drives out of my case and can build in something smaller.

rocky badge
#

Besides the server versions of those

waxen scroll
#

ive used DOS, windows 3.1, 95, 98, 98se, ME, XP, vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10

rocky badge
#

DOS....

clear igloo
#

@waxen scroll Did you play Logical Journey of the Zoombinies?

waxen scroll
#

no but i played LEMMINGS

#

fuck yeah

#

death to lemmings

clear igloo
#

lol

rocky badge
#

Would having IDFs be stupid? Lmao

waxen scroll
#

no

#

wait

rocky badge
#

For a home?

waxen scroll
#

in your house?

#

yes

rocky badge
#

Ok

#

Lol

waxen scroll
#

theres no reason you cant run all the wires to one central location

rocky badge
#

Yeah

clear igloo
#

You need one IDF per floor, a BDF, and a MDF

waxen scroll
#

my home is 3 floors and i wired it fine

#

xD

clear igloo
#

but seriously a single CDF is fine

rocky badge
#

1 and 10GbE to clients, does that sound good?

#

And SFP+ between switches and router?

waxen scroll
#

nope. all copper

#

fiber doesnt make faster

clear igloo
#

But it is easier to find

rocky badge
#

I know

clear igloo
#

Just use DACs between them

rocky badge
clear igloo
#

It will look cleaner and you can get 0.25m DACs I believe

rocky badge
#

Wot, whatโ€™s Cat5e+...

waxen scroll
#

you tell me

rocky badge
#

I dunno what it is...

ebon terrace
#

an exotic connection we've never heard of.

rocky badge
#

Yeah

waxen scroll
#

@rocky badge wot is 3.13

rocky badge
#

Probably the switch number and the port number

waxen scroll
#

wheres the IDF number?

#

old job our IDs looked like 12D25F042

#

๐Ÿ˜‰

#

muuuuucccchhhh more detail

#

@rocky badge @clear igloo your IDs needs to scale

#

none of this BS 3.13

rocky badge
#

Lol

#

Idk what it is exactly

#

I'm just taking a guess

waxen scroll
#

1 = floor number, 2 = IDF number, D = patch panel ID, F042 = ID of where the jack is located in the building... theres a grid system and a map to locate the spot. this lets you reverse lookup the location when you see a port in an IDF

#

oops forgot, the 25 after the D is the port # on the D patch panel

rocky badge
#

Lol

waxen scroll
#

its helpful because some buildings may have half of the connections on one floor actually located on a floor above

#

while the other half are located on the same floor

#

of course you can long form a label "IDF2, PP3, P20"

#

too much info to take up a label for a small port

#

@clear igloo last company i wanted to standardize hostnames more than they were

#

i got flack for even suggesting we call a site "international"

#

domestic vs international

#

because it might make people feel isolated and offended ... or something like that

#

i think that was strike two for quitting

#

lol

rocky badge
#

Lol

unreal wedge
#

5e+ means don't use CAT5 or lesser cable.

clear igloo
#

@waxen scroll I'll get right on standardizing the ports. Everything will henceforth be known as Eth(chassis)/(linecard)/(sub-linecard)/(port)

rocky badge
#

@unreal wedge oh

@clear igloo hai

#

Anyone knows how many watts PoE can support

rocky badge
#

Depends on the switch

mellow lava
#

I wanna use it to feed a Arduino and two A4899 stepper motor drivers with it

#

Cables have their limit too right?

rocky badge
#

Umm I'd assume so

mellow lava
#

UTP cables aren't that thicc

rocky badge
#

Yeah xd

mellow lava
#

But 200 W would be a nice number

#

@ 100 V

rocky badge
#

Yeah

clear igloo
#

PoE can do up to 60W with UPOE+ or 30W with POE+

#

15.4W at POE

#

All based on Cat5 cable and 802.3bt can do up to 100watts but I'm not sure it's implemented yet. 44 to 57 volts is the range that all PoE supports to some level

rocky badge
#

@clear igloo are you at work?

clear igloo
#

of course

rocky badge
#

Oof

#

Just go home, jk

clear igloo
#

lol, I can't

#

Gotta wait for some reports to be generated ๐Ÿ˜„

Oh man I have a poe switch from ubiquiti

#

it's love

#

my wifi setup is complete overkill. I can get a good signal from my car that's like 200 feet away.

rocky badge
#

Lol yeah

clear igloo
#

PoE is where life came from, it was the PoE port that started the spark of life!

#

Glory to the PoE port!

@clear igloo ๐Ÿ˜„

uncut pendant
#

Hiyo. I just bought a powerline adapter for my PC, and everything including the cables are all rated for gigabit, but my router/modem combo (isp provided) is only giving me an amber light, help?

clear igloo
#

What model?

rocky badge
clear igloo
#

model router/modem?

rocky badge
#

That idk

#

Hai @clear igloo

clear igloo

uncut pendant
#

its a technicolor cgm4231

rocky badge
#

4321

rocky badge
#

I would laugh if the default password had 4321 in it

clear igloo
#

So only the right LED is on, hmmm

uncut pendant
#

cables are 6e

#

and my mobo is a asus prime Z270 a

clear igloo
#

I would assume the adapter either shows 100Mbps or not connected on the PC?

uncut pendant
rocky badge
#

Check interface config?

#

Is it an Intel nic?

#

Or realtek?

uncut pendant
#

It is an intel

rocky badge
#

Click properties

Idk the extact steps

clear igloo

Properties > configure > Link Speed > 1.0Gbps

rocky badge

Dat

clear igloo

It will most likely drop but if it doesn't then yay

#

If it drops, set it back to auto

uncut pendant
#

it did drop

clear igloo
#

Hug @rocky badge

rocky badge
#

Hey!

#

Oh

#

That's better @clear igloo

uncut pendant
#

this is the powerline software

#

it says its 196 but thats incorrect

#

and it gives out a random number

clear igloo
#

lol, seems legit

rocky badge
#

Hmm

clear igloo
#

Have you tried resetting it?

uncut pendant
#

doing so rn

#

nothing happened lol

clear igloo
#

Have you tried offering it tears of sorrow?

#

The metal lords might be pleased with that

uncut pendant
#

.....

clear igloo
#

Can you get internet via the adapter at least? or no connection out?

uncut pendant
#

wat?

clear igloo
#

Can you connect to the internet over the powerline adapter?

uncut pendant
#

it is

#

just 100 mbps tho

clear igloo
#

ok

rocky badge
#

Oh, major oof

#

100Mbps is too slow

#

It's "Fast" Ethernet

clear igloo
#

Well bad news

#

The port is only 100Mbps rated

uncut pendant
#

WHAT

rocky badge
#

So is gigabit "Supa fast" Ethernet?

#

OOF

uncut pendant
#

dafuq

rocky badge
#

Where?

clear igloo
#

AT least according to one review

uncut pendant
#

wtttfff

rocky badge
#

Oof

uncut pendant
#

i mean i doubt it

#

I could contact tp link

clear igloo
#

Lot of complaints in the reviews about it too

#

But they advertise a gigabit port on their website xD

rocky badge
lean pollen
#

:( companies does bad things

uncut pendant
#

this is verrryyy bullshit

rocky badge
#

Yee

#

@lean pollen yeah

uncut pendant
#

i trusted tp link

rocky badge
#

People see 600Mbps and 4/5 stars

#

So they think it's 600Mbps

#

Most of the top reviews Amazon show are good reviews

clear igloo
#

Return to amazon

uncut pendant
#

i mean

#

I dont have anything else to connect to the internet

rocky badge
#

Oh

#

Rip

uncut pendant
#

I was dealing with an other bs problem

clear igloo
lean pollen
#

100 is enough for most people, so they give high ratings

rocky badge
#

WiFi won't work?

clear igloo
#

Ethernet means 100Mbps

uncut pendant
#

the wifi doesnt like the router

rocky badge
#

Oh

#

Can you use another router?

uncut pendant
#

Nope

rocky badge
#

Ouch

#

Get an AP?

uncut pendant
#

lol the isp said if i change the router i can get sued

clear igloo
#

Can you find a better product on amazon that does powerline and is cheaper?

rocky badge
#

WHAT

#

How

clear igloo
#

It's a combo unit

rocky badge
#

Yeah

#

But sued?

uncut pendant
#

cause its isp property and the lines are isp property

#

and im renting it

rocky badge
#

Oh

uncut pendant
#

so if i tamper i could get sued

#

which is correct

#

internet is a service

clear igloo
#

Not tamper, just replace it and tell them you want to use your own

uncut pendant
#

lol i tried

clear igloo
#

Who is your ISP?

uncut pendant
#

buckeye

rocky badge
#

Surely you can use an AP

clear igloo
#

@uncut pendant you in the states?

uncut pendant
#

i can

#

Ye

#

I should just go downstairs

#

lool

rocky badge
#

Lol

#

Or ask them to move it to your desk

clear igloo
uncut pendant
#

Nah the box is close to a window and they drilled through it to get inside in one corner on the basement

clear igloo
#

Tell them it was false advertising and you would like something else

rocky badge
#

Oh @uncut pendant

#

^lurick

uncut pendant
#

Ill talk to live chat

rocky badge
#

Lol

#

Live chat

uncut pendant
#

theyve helped alot

rocky badge
#

Wow

#

That's shocking

#

Wait, if it was Amazon's, it's not. Their support is amazing

uncut pendant
#

its amazons

lean pollen
#

Couldn't you buy a router and connect it to theirs? Wouldn't be ideal but....

uncut pendant
#

they rmaed everything in my old exploding pc

rocky badge
#

Ah ok

#

Yeah

uncut pendant
#

and send me 600 dollars in 2 days

rocky badge
#

I remember

#

@lean pollen yeah that's possible but why XD

lean pollen
#

Many ISP provided ones can be set in bridge mode or what it's called

rocky badge
#

My modem is free

#

It's meh

lean pollen
#

If you connect one with better WiFi you will get better WiFi? Connect them over cable ofc

rocky badge
#

But I can use any router I want

#

My modem has be on the approved list of modems

lean pollen
#

Ir you have to use the box ISP gives I mean

#

If its the case for Momo

#

Btw WiFi in my ISP provided box is good enough for me

#

As long as I don't get NAS or something

rocky badge
lean pollen
#

Well

rocky badge
#

I have a server manshrug

lean pollen
#

WiFi wouldn't be the biggest problem if I die maybe anyway

rocky badge
#

It has files and stuff on it

#

That I want to access on my network

#

@lean pollen wdym?

lean pollen
#

I don't have a server

#

Somehow the ISP box doesn't let high speeds between users in LAN

#

Don't know why

rocky badge
#

Wot

lean pollen
#

Currently don't really need speed between two stuff on LAN tho

#

No server, no Nas.

rocky badge
#

Not even a network share across computers?.. dang

lean pollen
#

What would I need it for

subtle glen
#

sharing files?

rocky badge
#

Backups

lean pollen
#

Backups, what is that

#

:P

subtle glen
#

lol

lean pollen
#

Well

subtle glen
lean pollen
#

I only have documents I don't want to loose on Google drive

#

Only backup

rocky badge
#

Oh

brittle mural
#

.-.

rocky badge
#

I use my laptop to dump footage and photos on to my server

subtle glen
#

like cache?

lean pollen
#

When I think about it I should backup my photos too...

#

So I probably should get server/nas

rocky badge
#

Yeah

subtle glen
#

if you want to go cheap get some nas like this so you can have a raid 1 to backup the other disk

#

Raid is not a backup -Linus Sebastian

lean pollen
#

I have phone photos on g drive but not my other photos.

subtle glen
#

my dad got me the cheapest one he could find

rocky badge
#

I have all of my photos on my server and on Google photos

subtle glen
#

always good to have a backup out of your home

clear igloo
#

Computer > NAS > Crashplan
|---------> One Drive

#

Backup all the things all the time!

subtle glen
#

uuuuuu

#

yeah but, do you have the storinator

#

dont think so

rocky badge
#

Oof

#

OneDrive

clear igloo
#

No, I don't have a storinator

#

I had something similar though

#

It drove me mad after ~2 years

rocky badge
#

Ewww storinators

clear igloo
#

Ewwwww @rocky badge

rocky badge
#

Ewwwww @clear igloo

subtle glen
#

clear igloo
#

lol, all the NVMe!

subtle glen
#

hell yeah

#

48 nvme

rocky badge
#

Oof

subtle glen
#

oof

#

but thats my daily connection

#

took me more than 3 days to download 200 GB of games

clear igloo
#

ouch

rocky badge
#

Haha

subtle glen
#

1,2 MB/s of download speed

clear igloo
#

yikes

subtle glen
#

who needs 10 gb transfer speed

rocky badge
#

Haha

subtle glen
#

few years ago this would have been considered like EXTREME speed

#

like 50 years ago

clear igloo
#

I do, I need 10GbE

waxen scroll
#

dont lie

subtle glen
#

me too prob, dunno exactly why tho

clear igloo
#

You're right, I need 50GbE @waxen scroll

waxen scroll
#

you need 1gbit

subtle glen
#

arent 8 KB/s enough?

rocky badge
#

You need "fast" Ethernet

clear igloo
#

Not when you have a 3TB steam library to keep backed up ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

subtle glen
#

you can backup steam libraries?

#

ohhh you just backup the drive with the library on it

clear igloo
#

I mirror the whole library in real time

rocky badge
clear igloo
#

For reasons
Because I'm totally not running it on a RAID 0 setup xD

subtle glen
#

i should do it too prob, if the pc breaks i dont want to download 200 GB of games again

#

lol

rocky badge
#

@clear igloo lol

#

Why raid 0

subtle glen
#

he wants speed

clear igloo
#

Well 4 SSDs are too expensive

rocky badge
#

"too expensive"
Has a 9 thousand dollar computer

subtle glen
#

he steal it at work

clear igloo
#

You shut your mouth when you're talking to me @rocky badge

rocky badge
#

Lmao

clear igloo
#

Runs two HDDs in RAID 0 instead

rocky badge
#

runs 4 HDDs in raid 10 instead

subtle glen
clear igloo
#

XD

#

If I upgrade it will be when 4TB SSDs are cheap and actually exist and put them in RAID 10 ๐Ÿ˜›

rocky badge
#

Do dat

subtle glen
#

use the sd card one

rocky badge
#

4x raid 10 HDDs are 600MB/s read and write

#

Seq

clear igloo
#

I need my 4K randoms

waxen scroll
#

i need your floppy disk

clear igloo
#

I'll just order 2x HyperFlex C240 M5 and load them up with 23x 3.8TB SSDs

subtle glen
#

i have a lot of floppy disks

clear igloo
#

I'll show you mine if you show me yours ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

We are talking about floppy disk drives right?

waxen scroll
#

...yeah

Why would you want thermalfake?

rocky badge
#

Oof

waxen scroll

rocky badge
#

Lol

subtle glen

rocky badge
#

Oh

waxen scroll
#

PCs so expensive now and dont outperform that much as what i have now

#

so i dont have anything better yet

rocky badge
#

So no point in upgrading?

waxen scroll
#

a 6 core i5 can barely touch what i have

#

i'd need to spend $$$$$ on i7 or i9

rocky badge
#

Lol

clear igloo
#

3930K on what board?

waxen scroll
#

im going to toss this whole thing eventually but i have a lot of expenses coming in the next year so i dont really wanna touch the PC

unreal wedge
#

AT&T is the epitome of shit.

#

$50 for 1Mb/s when we're paying for 1.5, and the local cable ISP offers 1Gb/s for that price in their fibre areas...

#

Btw, can a 50-ish ft run of RG59 with RG6 on both sides of it kill a modem's chance of a connection? I've got a clean RG59 cable that's roughly 40 years old in the wall that I'm going to re-run soon, but a while ago the connection died, claiming all kinds of BS, like not being able to communicate with the ISP to grab an IP, yet still being fully capable of locking into the downstream and upstream channels... though the SN ratio is 32 when it should be at least 35-40+...

#

Never gets a reply...

lean pollen
#

Weird that you can have fiber that isn't symmetrical

unreal wedge
#

Still has to do with how many DOCSIS channels each stream has. Remember, fibre is only a type of cabling. The backend is still the same to my knowledge.

lean pollen
#

In my country all fiber I have seen is symmetrical

Idk why

clear igloo

So let me put it this way
I had a SB8200 and IPv6 worked perfectly on their top tier plan (400/30)
I upgraded to 940/40 plan and IPv6 no longer worked because they didn't provision the plan properly for IPv6 because copy/paste is hard

severe wigeon

tough bluff

Its the same rack

#

Those yellow drops were moved too

#

Networking is now in the front

#

Before everything was in the back

prime flame
#

is that a home server or a work server?

tough bluff
#

My basement

#

Its automation

severe wigeon
#

What racks you use?

tough bluff
#

Think they are Chinese as they came with the house

#

And have no branding

prime flame
#

It might've been home-made depending on who owned the house before you

tough bluff
#

They feel very cheap compared to the racks at my work

severe wigeon
#

does it have wheels

tough bluff
#

My parents owned the house before me

#

No

#

And dont try moving it unless you want leg day

#

We are already using 2 backup lines because a contractor cut a main line

#

I was so anxious

#

He offered to re run it I told him to get out of my house

severe wigeon
#

I saw some sliding system for racks to pull them out

#

Cant renember where or a brand

#

It looked sturdy

tough bluff
#

Some of the Units pull forward on tracks

#

But it cant be done

#

Before of cables

#

The plans had security and fire to be on this rack but my fire friend suggested against it

#

Instead it has its own rack

#

He said the last thing you need is a automation fault to make your firearm malfunction

severe wigeon
tough bluff
#

Ours is in the middle of the room

#

It's a long story

#

There use to be a wall behind it

#

But we removed it

severe wigeon
#

Thats the track i was talking about

tough bluff
#

So now the drops come from the ceiling above it

#

What's the intention

#

A rack in a closet that only fits the rack?

#

It's a great idea till it breaks

#

850..

severe wigeon
#

Its 4 wheels and a strap to keep it from even remotely tippi g

tough bluff

#

And I was so scared something was gonna break

severe wigeon

tough bluff

It's great if you dont have space for a server room

severe wigeon

Which I dont

tough bluff

Just turn a small closet into this
