#

yeah but new devices won't be able to get an IP

#

yeah lol

#

shouldn't

#

same or less

#

I also have a GP rule for the rest of my computers

#

I use a vpn

#

On my remote server it connects to the vpn before sign on to connect to the domain controller

#

It's a PPTP vpn. Moving to directaccess soon

#

Lol

#

That's what it looks like on the lock screen with a VPN

#

It's super useful

#

I have a remote server so I sorta need to connect to my domain controller

#

And I don't wanna port forward that. . .

#

Idk if you can too

#

But I don't wanna lol

#

Let's not create more security issues than is needed

#

Oof

#

Yea

#

Lol

#

Gg ipad you get better speeds than my laptop

#

Lol

#

Yeah

#

103/10 laptop usually gets 80/10

#

True

#

It's better than all of my friends though

#

I have the best internet out of all of my friends

#

Which is quite sad lol

#

Considering one lives in an area that he can get 2gbit

#

No

#

I know

#

We don't have fiber for houses/residential in our area

#

Nor does business

#

If you want fiber you gotta get a fiber line dug

#

Which can be expensive

#

And charter doesn't do fiber

#

Nor does any in my area

#

Charter is the only cable isp

#

AT&T is dsl

#

Rest are satellite or 4G

#

Now that I think about it

#

How much did my district pay for 15 fiber lines

#

Some are in areas where there is no cable or dsl

#

And there's fiber there only to the school

#

15 1 gigabit lines

#

Gigabit up and down

#

Each school gets their own public ip and internal range

#

Nice

#

So main where all of the main stuff is is 10.0.0.XXX

#

Each school gets ~500ips

#

More are added if needed

#

Wait, each get like 700 my bad

#

The high school gets the most because it's the biggest with around 4 thousand ips

#

The router is 10.0.XX.03, the DC is 10.0.XX.02, the FS is 10.0.XX.04-06

#

Public schools

#

Yes

#

You can access any school's DC from any school

#

SMB is disabled

#

I tried the C$

#

Doesn't work

#

It's refused, times out, or asks for credentials

#

Imo what's cool. The web filter integrates with active directory

#

So it knows what OU the compute is in and applies the correct filtering

#

Nope

#

Here's my school's network before school started

#

So no student devices were on or connected

#

Those no names entrasys are the APs

#

Each school has a nano server 😄

#

Yeah

#

Wanna know what's bad about a guest wifi I was on?

#

You can access any of the connected clients

#

Lol

hey ayyylias! is this a good speed for my server to main pc data transfer?

COME ONNNNN you little cesor

stoic aurora
#

hello anyone got some time to give me a hand with a ipv6 problem im having? Iv been trying to fix it my self for a few weeks and im finaly breaking down and trying to get some one much smarter than me to help

#

my network setup is like this ( cable modem >PFsense>windows 2016 DC with DNS and DHCP 4/6 >clients ) Clients are pulling addresses but no ipv6 trafic is making it past the pfsense box

#

so it has to be a settign i messed up or a rule or somthing breaking the network

#

I can resolve address in the local network

#

using nslookup

high anchor
#

Maybe there is some missing ipv6 routes on your windows server to forward trafic

stoic aurora
#

Im figuring its osme setting in pfsense that i dont know to configure or somthing

#

it works if i use the built in dhcpv6 on pf sence but wont rout past the pfsence box if i dont

#

so im thinking its a gateway setting or somthing

high anchor
#

You have to use another subnet after your Windows machine, like using a /56 on PFsense side then use a /64 for the rest of the network, your windows machine is then the gateway and you have to route trafic to the PFSense /56 address

stoic aurora
#

even know the DC is on the same switch as the rest of the lan

#

everthing is behind the pfsence box

high anchor
#

Well.. Maybe with separated DHCP server you can do it without a subnet, but I would do this to make stuff easier. (But then you will have to create a route on your PFSense)

stoic aurora
#

I think thats where im having trouble it looks like trafic hit the pf sense box and stops

#

it detecting the pfsense box as the gateway but not routing past

high anchor
#

And my PFSense knowledge is a bit small (I only setup a little 6to4 tunnel and then used the DHCPv6 server from PFSense on a dedicated ESXi server)

stoic aurora
#

why does this have to be so complicated lol

#

😃

high anchor
#

It's networking ^^ That thing is more complicated than just connect some cables ^^

stoic aurora
#

lol yea IPV6 is just the shinny thing that looks confusing as crap and is differnt than what im used to so it confuses me

high anchor
#

You wouldn't even imagine how dumbly difficult this thing can be in some cases

stoic aurora
#

the company i work for is planing on rolling it out this fall and none of us realy know much abougth how to rout it properly

high anchor
#

Damn, glhf mate

#

ipv6 routing can be a b*tch sometime

rocky badge
#

ikr I hate v6

#

I disabled it on my laptops and computers

stoic aurora
#

so i took it upon my self to correct my igorance so im deploying it on my own network first its verry simular to how theere network is but smaller

high anchor
#

I personally think it's cool but it's a freaking mess when you try to dig too much in it.

rocky badge
#

No IPv6

#

because its a pain in the ass to configure sometimes

stoic aurora
#

30 somthin pc 1 switch 1 firewall box and 2 modems but just using one for simplisity later ill set up fall over

high anchor
rocky badge
#

I need a failover DHCP server

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

stoic aurora
#

looks liek a he tunnle

high anchor
#

Yes but it's not (on my ESXi it is tho)

rocky badge
#

It's nice.

#

And integrates well with other stuff like RAS.

stoic aurora
#

atm it looks ok but sigh

#

@rocky badge yea my ipv4 side works great just getting it to work on both is the headach

#

thats why i dont want to use the built in dhcp server on the pfsense box

#

you scale it out to 200 clients its a pain to manage on pfsense

#

windows dhcp 10 , 200 , 2000 its still useable

#

so weird i can ping but tracert just dies

rocky badge
#

Yeah @stoic aurora

#

I have IPv6 setup

#

You just won't connect to my active directory server

#

Therefore no login

stoic aurora
#

I fixed it woot woot

#

i checked the box that said Append circuit ID and agent ID to requests and everthing worked

slow pivot
#

except when they go to pull one of them out and realize they have been had. 😛

stoic aurora
#

192.168.1.178 EQUIP'TRANS 00:01:00:11:C3:14 this device is showing m=on my network for the life of me i cant figure out what it is

#

any gusses what is could be

rocky badge
stoic aurora
#

yea its a odd device i have no clue what it could be and google is useless

slow pivot
#

It's a KVM/embedded device of some sort

#

maybe a switch, a PDU

#

LCD temperature display

#

These people now "own" EquipTrans http://www.gmidatabox.fr/

stoic aurora
#

I wonder if its the lights out port on my server

#

I added a PTR record for it anyways

uncut pendant
#

Im on Windows 10
I have a phone hotspot and a router
i want steam to connect to my router and i want a few other programs to use the hotspot

#

is that possible

slow pivot
#

Not that I know of, unless you have multiple wifi cards

uncut pendant
#

I mean
i have 2 ways of connecting them

#

the router is connected by powerline

#

so ethernet

#

and the hotspot is usb

#

and windows recognizes that

high anchor
#

You could do it but manually (get each IP of steam server and route them to your router, or redirect only some IP to the hotspot) but it's a huge pain to setup and it's not future proof.

#

Some apps allows you to just scan for an app and redirect all its trafic to one network adapter (but they aren't free)

slow pivot
#

Ahhh

#

There is a way to do that, have you looked up "multi-homed" for windows 10?

high anchor
#

Actually no, i'll take a look at it 😃

subtle glen
#

that is OP for me

#

wtf is goin on

#

discord doesnt send messages, the corner pc says i dont have internet but there is

subtle glen
#

Ide ftw

#

duh halp meh vipien

#

buuuu

glad marsh
#

wait so this is a?... RAID 5?

#

cool 😛

#

haha

#

well memory caching might be worth trying tbh

#

no idea how to do that on windows properly though

#

nah I mean like some smart-ish software RAM caching

#

yeah Linux does too

#

but explicit caches are a lot faster

#

at least on linux it did yield me perf improvements lol

#

using a big file in a RAMDisk as a cache "SSD" lol

#

it works surprisingly well for how janky of a setup it is lol

#

on the linux note btw

#

btrfs is very fast

#

I suppose because it abuses memory cache a lot better than ext4

#

but I mean noticably faster even on an SSD

#

just by switching from ext4 to btrfs

#

btrfs is a filesystem yea

#

pretty new in the grand scheme of things though

#

and it natively supports RAID 0 and 1 btw

#

loool

#

yeah ofc

#

I use it on most things now

#

including my server

#

the RAID 1 features are much "safer" than hardware RAID actually

#

as btrfs also does block checksums, so it can figure out which drive is faulty

#

a hardware RAID with 2 drives doesnt have any other choice but to error out

#

its 50/50 xD

#

not sure if this is in mainstream yet, havent updated in a while and dont really want to re-do my server setup

#

but you can/will be able to tell it RAID levels per-folder

#

so like have a RAID 1 folder, RAID 0 folder, etc

#
  • per file encryption and compression
#

really sexy filesystem

#

never used it, but from what Ive read and heard its really powerful

#

interesting

#

afaik it needs pretty high amounts of RAM dedicated to it to run smoothly

#

but I doubt hes running out of RAM

#

yeah should be fine

#

"should" lol

#

well

#

is it just HDDs?

#

hm

#

could be the CPUs, but I dont want to bet anything on it

#

but I have a similar scenario

#

a client of mine bought a crappy server even though I told him to get a typical desktop-like ryzen setup

#

its a quadcore Xeon, 8 GB RAM and dual 500 GB HDDs

#

(for more $$$ than a 12 thread Ryzen with 16 GB and an SSD... but oh well)

#

yeah

#

I told him he will have to buy me more RAM soon

#

especially if he wants to run more VMs on it

#

lel

#

yeah the windows install on it is really slow

#

basically the use case is: web server VM + dev web server VM

#
  • a windows VM that they use through remote desktop
#

cuz they didnt want to pay money for multiple licenses of some expensive sw

#

so we made a VM for it like that

#

but get this

#

it used to take like 5 minutes to fully boot the VMs

#

and windows was pretty responsive for a HDD

#

now it takes around 10 minutes to boot

#

and windows is really unresponsive

#

even the start menu is choppy when loading

#

guess what changed since?

#

nope

#

I applied meltdown patches...

#

literally the only change

#

yeah 😐

#

yeh

#

its a skylake Xeon btw

#

xD

#

yeh

#

I run my personal server on an i5-4460 lol

#

not updating that rn

#

KVM

#

we needed to run some light stuff on the host itself (such as a samba share and we dont have the budget for dedicated share HDDs)

#

so ubuntu-server and KVM

#

coolio

#

I want a powerful-ish server for virt

#

this i5 is fun and all but it "only" has 24 GB of RAM

#

yeah lol

#

xD

#

I have 32 GB in my desktop and 24 GB in the server

#

but for really heavy virt its just not enough

#

ayyy over half done

#

lel

#

you should get over 100 MB/s with a single one lol

#

let alone an array

#

ah right

#

I only ever used software RAID 1 with btrfs

#

and RAID 1 doesnt do much

#

as btrfs does checksums even without RAID

#

lolz

#

I want moar storage :<

#

got a 1 TB HDD + 120 GB SSD + 256 GB NVMe in my desktop

#

nah just purely more storage

#

a 2 TB HDD wouldnt hurt in my desktop tbh

#

and then my server has a 120 GB boot SSD and dual 2 TB in btrfs RAID

#

^ use that as my NAS

#

yeah

#

I want a 2 TB (or bigger) HDD directly in my desktop though

#

so I can do stuff like record my games all the time

#

for those occasional cheaters and lol moments

#

yeah thought about that lol

#

ah thats really noice

#

meanwhile I just have this derpy screenshot sharing lol

#

well and my potato website I guess

#

lovely

#

its gettin' there

#

xD

#

yeh lul

#

I was about to buy an old dual xeon 72 gig server actually

#

but then an offer you cant deny came up...

#

an RX480 4GB for $200

#

its gonna be more like $350-400 after shipping and import taxes..

#

but oh well, still half the price of what Id pay for a new one here

#

fancy

#

unlikely

#

nah its not

#

thats still 4 GB/s

#

you can rage, its not gonna change anything

#

or is it?

#

I just realised your earlier 3rd drive for parity comment was related to my RAID 1

#

well ya know

#

btrfs block checksums

#

not really needed 😛

#

meh

#

idk maybe

#

btrfs only supports RAID 0 and 1 rn

#

no I mean "maybe" as in "maybe Ill do it in the future"

#

cuz btrfs doesnt support RAID 5 as of now and its a consumer haswell chip on a Z97, so no hardware RAID card unless I buy one

#

yeh

#

xD

#

alright running a disk speed test on my VM

#

lets see how this thing does...

#

ye

#

LMFAO

#

dat memory caching doing its job

#

damn

#

hooolllyyyy

#

okay

#

just f or info

#

lmao

#

okay now my speeds ok?

#

this is just a KVM virtual harddisk

#

on an SSD

#

with btrfs

#

nothing special

#

NTFS inside of the VM

#

ifkr

#

doing HDD now

#

which is on the RAID 1 array

#

same results for read speed

#

yep

#

it just doesnt care

#

Ill try 5 GB with the HDDs in a bit

#

when this finishes

#

okay only 1.6 GB/s write

#

vs 2.2 on the SSD

#

doin' 16 GB now

#

I love this lmao

#

taskmgr is so confused with VirtIO drivers

#

lol

#

Im just running plain ol'win10 pro in the VM

#

yeah I know, Ive used winserver for a bit once

#

tried to get PCI passthrough to work

#

with no luck ofc xD

#

Id probably use something like XenServer

#

for my desktop passthrough Id like to use linux too

#

and kinda pointless using Xen and 2 VMs when you can use linux as the host and only have 1 VM

#

and for my server its linux as host again cuz I need it to be able to do a lot of other stuff than just run VMs :/

#

(yeh I know Xen can do it and ESXi can probably too, but this was the say way out :P)

#

lol

#

noice

#

also caches have been annihilated now

#

but still keep in mind thats 2 HDDs in RAID 1

#

and they are only 5400rpm

#

Im sad the software Im using for a ramdisk has a singlethreaded driver :/

#

limits performance a lot

#

but its the only dynamically allocating ramdisk I found, so I guess I cant complain much lol

#

the multithreaded one I was using before

#

I think it was radeon ramdisk actually, which is just a rebrand of something else anyways

#

but that was doing 10 GB/s easily

white coral
#

lol i love how the previous router i used for covering the other side of my house was so old my phone refused to connect to it automatically unless it was the only one in range

rocky badge
#

lol

white coral
#

Glad I fixed that with an ac access point connected to my router via Ethernet over power line

#

It hiding

rocky badge
#

lol

white coral
#

But it is the next best thing to an actual Ethernet hardline

rocky badge
#

lol

#

I have Spectrum

#

Call them

#

You should have 100Mbps

#

or more

white coral
#

I do

#

On the hardline

rocky badge
#

Oh

white coral
#

It’s cut here because of the breakers

#

And I’m using Ethernet over powerline

subtle glen
#

That startbar shouldn't be there

rocky badge

lol

white coral

The heck is that resolution

#

Gross

subtle glen
#

Its the phone camera...

rocky badge
#

My phone shoots in 4K

#

soo

subtle glen
#

Mine doesn't, I think, soo

#

Ok, the start bar is gone, but the cat watches the mouse arrow with a face I dont like

white coral
#

@subtle glen half your taskbar is missing man

#

also you are using an outdated os

#

windows 7 has been kicked to the legacy support section after xp's demise

#

windows 8.1 or 10 are the only oses you should use as a daily driver for security and proformance reasons

#

as they are still officially suported

#

and not on a stay of execution

subtle glen
#

I know win 7 is outdated

#

Also, that thing is a steam link, its not just an hdmi cable connected to the tv from the pc

#

The steam link works by connecting to the steam interface on ur pc

#

Its not made for mirroring what is going on on ur pc

white coral
#

its a security issue too lol

subtle glen
#

Dude I know you cant find win 98/xp/win7/win 8 etc on their website, I know it is outdated

white coral
#

you can actually find windows 8.1 on their site still

#

its just hidden

rocky badge
#

Yeah

white coral
#

they have a media creation tool like what you use for 10 on their site for 8.1

#

i used it to downgrade my old rig because 10 had stability issues with my mobo which was only certified up to 8.1

#

just slapped 8.1 pro on there

rocky badge
#

I have a 8 iso

#

sooo

#

and 8.1

#

and 8.1 embedded

#

Im set

#

and 2012 r2

subtle glen
#

Its strange cause I was looking for win 8 since a bit and I couldnt find it

white coral
#

and you must have a key to download

#

to reinforce that fact

rocky badge
#

I have a KMS sooo I'm good

white coral
#

i mean to even download it

#

not just activate

subtle glen
#

Mmmm, I tried to use a key to download win 8 but it didnt work, imma try with a win 7 key

white coral
#

they really dont want you using it because its a security landmine and they dont want to support 7 really any longer

#

@subtle glen you dont need a key to download 8.1

subtle glen
#

Well, if those pc I got have the sticker with the key

#

Why not

white coral
#

because its supported still

subtle glen
#

For me, windows 7 will be one of the best os

white coral
#

they dont have to make it hard for you

#

7 is really only availble to download for people stuck with it needing recovery, or wanting to migrate to a vm for legacy app support

#

so they require a key so average joes building a new pc cant get it

subtle glen
#

Its da best

white coral
#

10 isnt what i call optimized

#

8.1 still is faster

#

because its using its own shell

subtle glen
#

8 or 10

#

Whats ur choice

white coral
#

not reworked 7 shell

rocky badge
#

@subtle glen 10

white coral
#

kernal isnt helping with ui fluidity

#

trust me, 8.1 is much more fluid on mechanical drive

#

10 chugs on a mechanical drive

#

people without money

#

aka me

#

i cant afford a tb ssd

#

i have too many programs that dont support installing to external drives

rocky badge
#

^^^

white coral
rocky badge
white coral
#

@rocky badge that dev build is why i lookforword to the next update

#

they finally reworked the shell

rocky badge

ikr

#

but I hate the timeline

white coral
#

its ligher

rocky badge
#

no thanks

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Same for Enterprise

#

Like

#

No telemetry

white coral

windows 10 is so anti consumer its not funny

i cant tell you how many times i threatened to sue microsoft for changing my workstation and complicating my work

i did my backups already

slow pivot
#

Dust? Short a pcb? Unlikely

#

I have seen heatsinks pop off and short a mb

rocky dirge
#

is there a way to drive 2 mainbords (with cpu + ram ) with one OS (windows 10) ?

subtle glen
#

@rocky dirge nah, its not a good idea sharing a drive between 2 motherboards (*mainboards) also cause if one is using it, the second one may have to wait for the drive to be free. Also i dont think it is something possible. U could try to make 2 partitions but u would need 2 os on the same hard drive

#

i think this is not the correct section for this question

slow pivot
#

@rocky dirge Do you mean at the same time, or a dual-boot kinda arrangement?

autumn estuary
#

So, I'm really stumped. I want to have my own networking equipment, but I still do not know which route is best, aside from buying my own modem:

MikroTik
Ubiquiti's UniFi
VyOS and/or PfSense
Some other suggested brands

subtle glen
#

well, with a modem u can only have one wired device, u need a modem AND a router if you want to have multiple devices

#

also pf sense is the operating system for a router build

autumn estuary
#

As is VyOS if I am not mistaken

Also, I know that all the modem does is transcode the signal and you need a router to send it out, then a WAP to broadcast it wirelessly

subtle glen
#

yeah, if u want to use pfsense or vyos u need a computer or something else like a pfsense box that has at least 2 network cards, for a router brand in particular i honestly dont know, that depends if you have to do something particular

autumn estuary
#

Ah, okay. Thank you for your input 😃

slow pivot
#

pfSense can easily perform the duties of a router (this is what I use on my network)

#

So no need to get two discrete pieces of gear to perform each task

autumn estuary
#

What about virtualizing them?

slow pivot
#

You can do that. I don't recommend it, since a router/pfSense usually provides useful services that you would want if your virtualization solution is offline for any reason.

#

I typically have a dedicated firewall/router pfSense box and a virtualization server for the rest of my services

autumn estuary
#

Ah, gotcha. I only have my one PC setup rn. I have another one sitting in the closet

slow pivot
#

ahj, that is a bit of a problem with my solution then 😃

#

I ran m0n0wall (a system that pfSense was modelled/built on) for many years before switching to a pfSense. I ran that on a Compaq Presario, Pentium3, 128MB ram. Did great 😃 I still have that box, and it still runs, was just brought out of service a year ago.

autumn estuary
#

What's a problem with your solution?

slow pivot
#

@long geode I'm sorry, but if you want the answer to your question, I am 100% positive that laptop can connect to a network. Now, if you're asking if it will perform well on a network, there's more than just the computer/laptop that factors into that. What type of work loads are you going to use the network for on that laptop?

I’m gonna be working for a company and I want a laptop good enough for networking

long lagoon
#

oh hell yeah

#

💸

white coral
#

i feel kinda sick when 300mb is considered baller when fiber optics exist and 10gb a sec internet is possible

#

like 300mbps should be what you look at when you live in an rural area if the infrastructure actually got investments apart from just staying functional

slow pivot
#

possible yes, but not practical. Having 2-3 people get 10Gb/s is not hard, getting 1000s or even 100s of households 10Gb/s is really, really, really hard

#

For example, how does an ISP aggregate 100 households all trying to run at 10Gb/s? 1TB/s, there are very few single solution switches that can handle that and most other solutions are still very very expensive

#

And then you need routers that can handle that load, and backbone links to push all that data to your peers, and then your peering connections have to be at least that fast, and likelt faster to service your other clients, etc etc etc

slow pivot
#

Right, and it has been a standard telecomm practice to do so for a long time (maybe since the beginning?). But I think, my point still stands: to provision 1Gb fibre already means the local switching has to be able to handle several 10s of Gb/s, not to mention that the core switching capability needs to be in the 100s Gb/s, which is already very expensive.

#

Putting fibre in the ground is expensive, but as many providers realized in the early 2000's, lighting dark fibre is not cheap either.

#

Maybe it is different now, but not from the pricing that my local Mr Cable and Ma Bell quote 😉

Hello, can anyone help me choosing server OS ? I built new server after my HP proliant gave up and couldn't handle my tasks anymore.
My new server has this specs : AMD Ryzen 7 1700, Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K5, 16 GB RAM (Dual Channel 2400 MHz), Radeon R5 230, 3x 2 TB WD Purple, 1x 3 TB WD Red, 1x 1 TB Toshiba P300 & Samsung 960 EVO 250 GB, 3x TP Link TG-3468
Can anyone suggest me OS that can handle : File Server, Print Server, Virtualization Server, Media Streaming Server etc.
I have been looking unRAID as good option but I don't know how worth it is getting it

for 60$, unRAID's risks are not the price of the software 😉

Why not just some Linux distro? Free stuff :P

hallow nimbus

Do you know a OS that can do all this then ? File Server, Print Server, Virtualization Server, Media Streaming Server etc.

glad marsh

Any, given you're willing to spend time to configure it

@ivory drift hope you got your watercooling figured out. If you haven't yet, try to put in a Y or a T fitting at the very bottom of your loop. In mine I have a Y fitting, into a valve, with a cap. I then have a left over piece of hose on a barb which I can hook up to drain it into a container.

Make sure everything is tight and secure, don't let the pump run dry, don't bother with coolants or dyes, distilled water is perfectly fine. And don't mix metals with your blocks and radiators. Follow all of that and you'll be fine.

I'll try bridging them all with your physical network

#

otherwise you will be in NAT hell

high anchor
#

I had an issue with VMWare ESXi on a dedicated server and the fact that it doesn't have any NAT support, so I used a pfSense VM with two nic, one that is bridged on my physical nic (with its own public IP, that's just a dedicated server stuff and you will probably don't need this) and another that is on a virtual network. The pfSense VM is giving local IP with DHCP to all VMs and route trafic to the physical NIC. But if you need to access a VM from your network, you will need to open ports on the pfSense VM.
As it was said, if you have the choice, use bridged nic on your VMs. It will get IPs from your router, as a physical machine would do.

connection attempts

because... unless your ISP is doing some fancy filtering, anyone on that same IP sub-net as your WAN will be able to fire traffic at your IP

So if there are still people that plug their PC directly into their WAN connection, no firewall/wifi-router thingy, you'll see that

pale sphinx

Was just wondering it since i haven't never seen it happening

@pastel creek but i don't get better speeds than 120MB/s

pastel creek
#

Ah, if it’s only point to point you are pretty limited. I have this configured for our office since I have multiple designers accessing files at the same time.

@pastel creek yea thats my problem and how can i go above it

hushed dome
#

@ancient vigil so what i have to configure?

#

@ancient vigil ma nas supports smb3

#

@ancient vigil iv plugged in 4cables

@ancient vigil and 6 in my pc

#

@ancient vigil the confusing thing is that the brand of my nas says more than 1Gbit is only possible with multiple clients

#

but im only getting 1Gbit

#

even with 2 clients its splits up

#

and then connect to one ip of the server?

#

ah use the hostname

@ancient vigil doesn't it work if i have

#

looks pretty limited

it looks like

#

i have 1 5gbit and 1 1gbit in my pc

5x 1gbit

#

okey ill first use a second pc

nop only one cisco 200-18

if i use 2 pcs i only get a half gbit for both pc's

#

@ancient vigil now im connected with 2 pc's to my nas over hostname
i can acces my nas over all 4 ip's but i still get 1Gbit together

#

@ancient vigil if i connect with pc over ip 129 and other pc 130 it works
but thats the only way😬

#

@ancient vigil and i really want to get 4Gbits on my main pc

@ancient vigil you mean disable smb 1 and 2?

oops i cant do that

#

only disable smb1

#

yep

i guess i have the problem

i disabled smb1
now i cant acces the hostname but still the ip's
means the hostname does only support smb1🤔

now i can acces hostname

weird shit

but still only 1Gbit😡

#

@ancient vigil do you know what SMB permanent handles means?

@ancient vigil only one cisco switch
and my pc can ping all 4 ip's of my nas

hushed dome
#

@ancient vigil crazy is that the brand sayd its not possible to get more than 1Gbit per client
but it supports dynamic link aggregation

#

@ancient vigil i did that but with not more than 1 gbit total

#

@ancient vigil is there another way to connect the ip's together to get 4gbit

hushed dome
#

@ancient vigil if i connect with my pc to 3 ip's of the nas i get a total of over 250MB/s

I mean I can connect wth my pc to 4 NAS IP's and i get more than 125MB/s

I have to design a network rendering cluster for this one college class, and as soon as I received this assignment, the first one I thought of asking was LMG, because they have a few videos on their setup, but they're outdated as I'm sure they aren't running most of that hardware anymore. I liked the video Linus showed where he showed off the $4,000 server chassis that allows you to have up to 8 GPU's in it. The SuperMicro SuperServer 4027GR-TRT. I can't really find the information I need for this assignment so I'll just ask them here.

What are the most powerful CPU's you can put into it? Like what era of Xeon's am I stuck to? I was going to stick a pair of Intel Xeon E5-2699 V4 2.2GHz 22-Core's in it, but I feel like that's too new for this system.

When he Linus said it was 1600W is that total for the entire system, or is that 1600W for just one power supply? I don't want to overwhelm the system by drawing more than what it can put out.

What GPU's would you recommend for this system? That won't put a massive load on the power supplies.

Is Linus running SSD's in this server or is he running 2.5" SAS drives? And which ones? (Like models and capacity, etc).

How is it that with the Supermicro SuperServer 4028GR-TRT that Linus used for 8 Gamers 1 CPU, that can only put 1600W on 240 volts and 1000W on 120v can support up to 8 Zotac GTX 980Ti Amp's that have TDP's of 250W each? Like those 8 cards alone at full capacity draw 2000W, and that's not including the other two GTX cards that aren't Zotac in the chassis. How is he getting away with that?

#

If you're gaming on all 8 of them at a time, aren't you putting a load on the cards which would cause them to draw a significant amount of power?

probably because it's a server with multiple PSUs

quick ledge
#

@meager creek this server uses 4 PSUs with the spec 1.6kW@230V/1.0KW@120V => the max Power is 4.8kW@230V/3.0kW@120V

I wish they'd do more videos on Servers, though I realize that I'm not their main demographic since the people who usually watch their videos are gamers. I just love super powerful servers.

This is also because the most cost effective servers aren't all that powerful or sexy tbh. The stuff that is used for deep-learning /is/ rather neat, but not all that accessible to the average computer person.

So my AM4 Ryzen 1600 isnt a server ? XD

slow pivot
#

Far from it 😛

hallow nimbus
#

Oh

#

Well recommend me something in the price range up to 5K 😄

#

Its for plex transcoding mostly

#

With around 10 users and growing

#

Maby @ancient vigil Has some used server on his work for Blue to use for Plex ???? 😄 dance

#

Aka Blue wants to buy said server

slow pivot
#

At 5K you'd be better off with consumer grade hardware

#

the issue is one of reliability

hallow nimbus
#

Yup

#

And connection speeds

slow pivot
#

eeehhh

#

20 upload atm 😄

slow pivot
#

oh you mean upload as in the physical network bandwidth

#

well, yeeah 😃

hallow nimbus
#

So if someone has a datacenter line that i can use i will use it 😄

slow pivot
#

surprisingly enough, network connectivity at datacenters is pretty cheap... it is power that is expensive 😃

#

At least where I am

hallow nimbus
#

And you are where ?

#

😄

slow pivot
#

In canada, with a lot of hydro power where electricity is close to the cheapest in North America

hallow nimbus
#

Oh

#

RIp we dont have that much hydro power

#

BRB mother problems

slow pivot
#

I think it was something like 4U of rackspace with 4A was 200-250$/month (which is pretty darn cheap here) and it was a 1Gb network connection with 1TB data per month

#

To get 8A to that same 4U was 500$ a month or more

#

either way, they were willing to give me 10x the data spped and transfer for 10-20$ more

#

but power, no way, dat's spensive

#

And I'm skeptical about 17c/KWh

#

Is that with multiple redundant power entry?

#

Ahh, see the base price I pay at home is 4c/KWh

#

yup

#

As I said, we have really cheap power here

#

The datacenter I was looking at had 2 redundant hydro power feeds, standard generators, UPS, and a redundant natural gas feed + generators

#

200-250$ for 4U and 4A (we're 110V here, so about 4KW to the rack)

#

I didn't get a breakdown for power specifically

#

yeah

#

This is why I'm running my own servers from home

#

eeeh, fast enough for the moment (30/30)

#

Considering that consumer data rates are rediculous here

#

100$/month + 25$/month for static IPs

#

that's just internet access

#

25/month for 1, and like 5$ for each 10 additional I think

#

so the cost to get one is a bit expensive, but it goes down with more

#

0.50$ per each extra but you need to get 10 at a time

#

yeah, it's not cheap; it's a commercial account since the consumer packages don't offer static IPs at all

#

jyeah

#

it'll be IPv6 or bust pretty soon

#

er

#

yeah, still getting used to this keyboard 😃

#

I need to see if I can get my IPv6 connectivity sorted now that I have a business account

#

I have dev work that I will be doing in the near future that will require IPv6

#

hehe, yeah, people don't realize how many IPs we are using in the IPv4 space till they have a look as what can be given away in the IPv6 space

#

heh

#

no, but a /64 is literally huge

#

heh, supposing you could ping-test 10 IP/s, that's still 325million years to scan a /48 😉

hallow nimbus
#

Not me i think 😄

I've often wondered what a IPv6 capable router/firewall will look like if it is handling a significant chunk of IP space

elfin socket

Anyone here have experience running exterior cat 5e and adding surge protection?

#

want to protect the router just in case sometime from the outside has a power spike

#

Any brand recommendations, or guides?

#

looking at these right now

Can't go wrong with L-com.

ITWLinx is solid as well.

Monday morning, just came back in school from holidays, and I already need some sleep.
I couldn't understand why 2 VMs that I created weren't getting internet.
Maybe there is something about having cloned the clean VM (OS not even installed) so I don't have to do the setup assistant again.
And so, maybe the fact that they have the same MAC address could create some network issues...

#

Facepalming hard

#

Welp, nevermind, I just didn't put the right gateway on Debian network setup (I needed to put a static IP on it).

Good day everyone.
Quick question - has anyone else have a problem with particular spammer?
Long story short - out email is getting spammed by one spammer that using different spoofed adresses and domains xxx@vpsxxx.com (insert random 4-6 digit number in place of x's).
Tried every way to block it off, but somehow it manages to get arround our spamfilter.

If anyone has suggestions - I would like to hear them

@ancient vigil VMWare Workstation, normally I don't have those kind of problems (I know very well how VMWare stuff works) but I was half asleep this morning and it didn't helped ^^

hi guys I have a question. did i get juked by guetting PIA? that VPN thing? it doesnt work with netflix. says im using a proxy or unblocker right away

calm oak
#

@steel magnet that's pretty common. You probably won't be able to use most streaming services while connected to a vpn. Twitch won't even let you log in while connected to a VPN, saying you are IP banned. I haven't used PIA, but there may be an option to whitelist certain sites. It is still much safer to use a VPN when in public though, even if it may get in the way of more recreational activities.
