@thick minnow an I7 8700 would be fine for most things, however a few things to take note of, VMWare ESXI has some specific hardware requirements (or used to), eg i remember trying to install it on a generic desktop style system a long time ago and it didnt work. I had to use Citrix Xen instead.

another question would be running a Hypervisor within a hypervisor seems a bit pointless and could negatively impact performance. Hypervisor inception is pointless in my opinion, id be interested to hear a use case where that actually makes sense.

Personally i use Unraid with a core i7 4th gen (i think), and it works fine with the vms and stuff ive thrown at it.

@rare ember I don't want any of experiment VM's to be in ESXi so I don't accidently delete important VM or something get corrupted, I'll be running Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016 instead of CentOS 7 cause its a bit easier for system and I can remote from my rig into VM and do experiments for example SQL Server or Test Domain or Exchange or even Sharepoint server, I am even thinking about going Ryzen cause of a bit higher core count and upgradeability and a bit more PCIe lanes, also GPU shouldn't be problem for server cause I have offer for GT 710 x1 from Zotac for $30

@thick minnow each to there own with regards to the VMs and where to put them, however the likelyhood of a test vm causing any issues within the Hypervisor itself is slim to none, so unless you are consistantly doing network changes left right and center, theres a slim chance you will gain any benefit from doing a hypervisor inception set up, rather than just having a nice folder structure within your esxi setup. Again, i would seriously look at cpu support for ESXi, as im 99% sure you will be out of look attempting to use it without a server grade CPU and / or a server grade motherboard.

hey, not sure if this is the right place to ask, but i've got a problem that i've been trying to figure out lately.
So i've set up a minecraft server for me and my friends, and it's on the default port (25565). Right now it's linked to my custom domain, which is fine and all, but i want to set up a FTB server under a subdomain, e.g. ftb.mydomain.com, and i want the domain to include the server port, so it routes correctly. Does a DNS (im using google domains) even support this kind of stuff? I'm getting errors.
