Bought an active HDMI and an Etherenet over Cat5e extender (what I was recommended online) and once the Vive decided it wanted to connect, which took like 20+min of fiddling around.... The games were laggy as fuck
You can get one of those wireless HMD boxes now they aren't too bad.
It's better than extending cables at least.
You still need to have a receiver
and the wireless HMD boxes would drop image quality, not to mention thats another battery to charge while playing the thing
Im running my Vive from my PC room at the end of my house, to my living room on the other side (about 75' ish)
I found my issue!
Its that i'm an idiot, and didnt read item description
_>
Well still better than my current vive situation in a box under my bed because our current living situation gives us absolutely no room to set it up.
I used it a total of 2 times.
Last time I used it was last Christmas.
Bought this since I only needed the one USB port for the Vive...
But I didnt read the description stating:
"Note that this adapter supports USB 1.0/1.1 speeds only. It is not compatible with USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 speeds. "
Guess what type the Vive uses....
3.0
Actually 2.0 from box to PC
its 3.0 from box to headset
which is weird, but whatever
There's a protocol reason for that actually.
So just bought this off of Amazon
It runs 2.0 USB signals, and has multiple ports so I can bring a keyboard and mouse into the living room too for easier access
I take it you got that from here? http://www.rainfold.com/blog/how-to-extend-vive-pc-distance.html
Well it lists those exact same USB extenders lmao
Night.
Night
@solid knot 1.38 volts seems exceptionally low for 5.2ghz. And not a voltage I would be concerned about.
It's very low but it's too high for my liking the poor thing tops out in the 80s.
80s are perfectly fine for skylake
But if you don't need it, can save power. 5.2ghz at 1.38 volts sounds like a golden chip for a 6700k though
I don't want it up there when this system is running 24/7 my comfort zone is 60 and maybe high 70s which is what it gets with synthetic loads currently.
The chip was really really bad when I first got it it quickly developed into a chip that overheated even at stock voltage and speeds but that was an issue with the IHS mount.
That's fine, but the cpu is still comfortable at those temperatures especially if it is hitting them in stress testing
I'll hit those for extended periods of time during my workflow I am just playing it safe this chip has had a pretty hard life.
Poor thing got drowned in acetone for about an hour while I tried to remove the insane amount of superglue off it.
Yeah makes sense. Though honestly if it overclocks that well you could probably get an 8700k out of its resale value
More niche of a resell though
Not around here there is basically no used market for computer hardware.
We don't even have a single computer store and shipping hardware here is insanely expensive.
Rip
I also have no interest in selling it I'll probably run it into the ground then pickup some Ryzen 2 CPU when it comes out since it better fits my current workflow.
Kinda a poor decision on my part to buy this chip in the first place but Ryzen was not out at the time and I bought this with insurance money so I didn't really have anything to lose.
Yeah, and no Intel ME backdoor to worry about
Eh not worried about that in the slightest.
It isn't something to worry about until it is. They say it is patched...for now
So I think that the fallout 4 vr is now fixed I donβt know officially cause sadly I donβt have a vr headset but getting one soon
Nice. I'll try in the next day or so
Best part about fallout 4 is the world imo
Partly because a lot of the other parts are lacking
Yeah
The headset cord is still really immersion breaking. Thinking of hanging it from the ceiling
Iβm probs gonna get the htc vive cause I have a place ready for it basically
The Vive definitely seems better if you are farther from your pc just because it doesn't need a usb port and cord for every sensor
Still think the Vive needs to drop in price though given the Rifts price drops
Or at least always include the audio strap
Same
Or both
I just wanna see when I get one and they go cheaper
Maybe massdrop should sell htc vives just for the fun of it and make it a little cheaper
Would be cool
Yeah I wanna see that happen
This looks awesome
Classic strategy gameplay reimagined for VR, from the creators of Arizona Sunshine. Skyworld is an award-winning VR game that combines accessible turn-based strategy and addictive real-time battles, all set in intricately animated miniature world...
$39.99
Its like a tabletop heroscape/warhammer style thing
The Vive is what you want if you are playing in a space larger than 3'x3', and/or want your VR further away from your PC.
The Rift is for smaller spaces, like standing in front of your desk or whatever
And if you don't plan on moving at all, Windows Mixed reality is new and fits the bill since It doesn't need external lighthouses
The price of the Rift and MR are similarly priced, with The Vive still coming in a couple hundred more.
HOWEVER! I can't speak for MR headsets, but The Vive is much better build quality than the Rift. Especially since they've been silently tweaking it and making small improvements without changing the price.
I dont agree with that. The rift and vive are for equal scenarios
difference between them:
Vive:
- Much easier to setup
- Larger third party market
- Compatible with most newer systems such as the LG 8K headset or whatever
Rift:
- Cheaper
- Lighter
- Includes the "deluxe audio headstrap" to use vive terms
If you are planning on moving around with your headset from place to place and need to be able to pack it up and unpack it quickly I would highly recommend the Vive as the lighthouses do not require USB connections to the computer
Purely experience based, the rift is better as it has nicer lenses and controllers. That being said this is only for the present and future iterations of the vive ecosystem will most likely fix its issues aside from its high price
Also rift has a lot of fantastic exclusives (I dont like exclusives and think its a bad business practice but hey thats how it is)
ReVive is a thing though if you want to play exclusives
also: There is now a VR youtube beta app on steam to watch VR YT videos from your vive
or rift
(dont want to anger the rift fans in this discord)
@scarlet robin how is the Vive easier to setup? do you mean physically or software wise?
the vive you have to figure where, drill, mount, and plugin.
you throw your sensors somewhere they can see eachother, plug them in, plug in the link box and stuff, and your done
you have to run USB extensions for the rift
it doesnt matter that much
long as they see eachother and the playspace
you can be very liberal in mounting
https://i.imgur.com/TSmnK0r.png ooh yay it includes like a 3M sheet?
Yeah, some people use it to mount the lighthouses to book cases, but please dont
my desk has a main surface area where monitor, laptop, etc. then 3" down it has another smaller depth wise for keyboard, mouse, mouse pad. I can mount it under the main surface area so cable management is pretty besides the cables going to the vive.
need to recable manage
I'd definetly use some sticky velcro on my Link Box, as I move my Vive from time to time.
And so I could fix it only when I need to.
ok
And to solve the Lighthouse mounting issue (drilling holes isn't perfect when you use a Vive only one time at a place...) I've just bought some compatible stands : https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B01LZ1Y076/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Feels a bit cheap but it do the work as you don't touch them all the time.
one will be above a bed and above a door sooooo....
gl using a stand
those are my only free wall plugs
Yeah of course, there are some others scenarios that aren't compatible with it
And I recommand you to install and turn on the bluetooth module to update wirelessly Lighthouses and also turn them off when SteamVR is closed.
ok
Settings > General > Scroll down and there you go
in steam vr @dire monolith ?
The attempt to create exclusives is one reason I may end up staying with the Vive. The price difference doesn't matter too much to me, though it is a negative for sure. And the usb ports the rift takes up is rather annoying. From the usability once you are in vr though, I would say the rift is better especially considering the price difference
The ability to upgrade individual parts of the Vive is a plus too. And was one of the reasons I took so long to get vr in the first place
I don't like the nonupgradable, exclusive-garden console feeling
Anyway to get the DK2 to act just as a HDMI monitor?
@cyan drum Yes, in Steam VR
ok @dire monolith thats what i thought
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=HTC Vive,Oculus Rift,Windows Mixed Reality wow the rift is searched more than the vive?
Because of being cheaper and so more easy to access for everyone
lol but apple is can be more expensive than android phones and it is searched more lol but thats a different topic
i thought the vive would be more googled
Atm oculus has more market share I think k
Steam hardware survey showed both being almost exactly 50/50
But then there's a chunk of people who play all there stuff only on the oculus store
So at the moment oculus is more popular
Intersting... Oculus went up by 10% on the Steam HW stats... Black Friday sales effect ?
Link to stats for those who want to check it out : http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey
probably
Is it worth it to buy a oculus rift?
Wait....you PREFER the HTC vive fit/comfort? 0.0
I found after long sessions the rift has caused my forehead to itch like crazy. Doesn't happen with the vive
But seems to be more specific to me. You really have to try them to see what is better for you
Could replace the foam on the rift and it would be fine I would think
I have a friend who could do the same with a Microsoft Hololens, for "research"
why! this seems stupid https://www.amazon.com/Packs-Protective-Silicon-Controllers-MDW/dp/B06XDLMYMQ
So you're less likely to scuff your wall by accidentally hitting them :V
lol
what about overhead objects lol
i can do a 6'x8' rectangle or a 6'x6' square with atleast 3" between wall and area
which one is better?
Yeah, if I were to set up room scale in my current bedroom, I'd have to remove the light blubs in case I might hit 'em.
i wouldnt have to move anything lol
I'd have to rearange my room, because it's a mess. :X
mine isnt...
Those look like a great way to get awful tracking
The other thing is these affect your tracking. Not a lot, but certain places where one of my light boxes is blocked that didn't cause much tracking issues now will cause drift and it to freak out.
why does the vive use so many colors? black, white, orange, blue, and grey...
The Vive is by far the superior comfort session if you have the deluxe audio head strap.
Not because of the headphones. Those are decent but not a selling feature.
But the head strap itself makes the Vive so easy to use for long periods of time. I've played for hours without any fatuige. Only had to take it off every now then from overheating (physically demanding games).
I'm not white knighting the Vive because "it's the headset I own so it's the better one" like most people do.
I've owned and used (obviously) both the Vive and Rift.
Sans the controller design (wands) of the Vive, it is all around the better setup and experience to play VR on.
I liked the Rift touch controllers more for their design (wrap around hands) felt more natural than having something extending past your fist as you have it around in VR.
But the build quality as well (especially in the Vives newer iterations) makes the Vive feel better. The wands feel substantial in your hand, but you won't get fatigued using them.
Rift touch controllers felt like a toy.
People have different options
I think the deluxe audio strap helps move the two headsets more inline with each other, not pull the vive ahead
Without the deluxe audio strap there was nothing I could do to get the vive comfortable
The foam on the rift making me itch when I sweat is a huge downside for me though. Seems different for everyone
ive played with both the rift and the vive and i felt like i could play longer with the vive
The rift is great for its price
I prefer Vive in total
I can play longer with the vive. The vive also just feels more expensive. I always get my hair stuck in the rift (I dont have long hair). Oculos has better controllers ill admit but if I had to choose. Vive all the way
Also, you dont have to run 10 billion USB cables with the vive
yeah
The USB cables alone would make me spend the extra $$ on a Vive over a rift
I have other stuff to plug into my PC than six USB from one device
I think 4 usb is more accurate number
Even without a vr headset, all of my ports are in use
I use wireless HDMI for the vibe
Works great
Hard to setup
But works great
Less cables
im on a laptop so I would need a USB hub for the Rift.
I do not have enough usb ports that doesn't have something plugged in to it currently, but if I got a Rift I could just take it some of the things I don't really use that often that I have plugged in.
Then I would have enough :)
I have a 4 port USB 3.0 hub, and the other two are from keyboard
What's plugged in to my computer right now is:
Keyboard 2 usb
External Blu-ray drive (only external because gift) 2 usb
Mouse 2 usb
Dongle for steam controller 1 usb
HOTAS 2 usb
G27 1 usb
That uses all my usb ports I think
I could just unplug two of the type of controllers and the Blu-ray drive
USB extensions going to a Anker USB 3.0 Hub
One USB Passthrough from STRAFE that powers the MM800 and M65 Pro
One USB for the keyboard strafe rgb
I dont mind usb cables, mostly because my motherboard has 14
And my case has 2 more
I always think i have too many usb ports open, the next rhing i know the only ones that arent occupied are the case ones
I think i have a problem
They already getfull
vive 2.0 when
When everyone could afford a Titan V
Day after your return window for the Vive runs out
The reason there isnt going to be a vive 2.0 or Oculus CV2 in 2018 (both companies have said they aren't releasing a successor HMD next year) isnt about the tech
The tracking is perfect on both, the lenses and audio and software is good.
While there is the tech to make higher res HMD's, GPU's can't run them yet.
hell I have a 1080ti and it struggles with demanding games like lone echo on 1.5x supersampling at times
@full lotus Ever heard of foveated rendering?
@hexed cove yes,and once that becomes very reliable and affordable it will be great.
But at the moment it's not ready/affordable
foveated rendering is already used, just without the eye tracking
The whole point of foveated rendering is the eye tracking though unless you're expecting people to look dead straight all the time like an owl
No it works differently. You see the image has to be warped in to a circular shape for VR and a lot of pixels in the peripheral vision are not necessary once warped
HTC did a long video on it. They basically showed that the middle of the image is not warped at all and the further away you go, the more the image has to be warped so lower resolution won't make much of a difference
Also one big thing with HTC and oculus displays are that they use pentile rather than RGB. So your pc renders the full RGB resolution just to lose 30% of Red and Blue because of the display technology. A big waste of resources right there
Hear about the updates with magic leap?
What is better w vr, 2 gtx 980 ti's or 1 gtx 1080 ti
some games support "VR SLI" each GPU renders a different eye but I would go with a 1080ti??
@cyan drum I have a 1080ti and it runs vr well, but thinking of a secondary system and I saw 2 980 ti's for $500 so π€
Can a radeon rx 580 use vr and get 40 fps?
I dont know I never see VR SLI used much...
Yes that is fine but probably no supersampling @tawny spear
yeah but are you gonna use the Vive?
Yes
oh god...
What?
45fps on the 90hz vive...
lol
I had 1080 SLI for a while
only two games supported it
one of which was Nvidia's tech demo
really wouldnt reccomend it
nowadays SLI/crossfire just isnt good for games as so little support it and those that do dont do it very well.
And for VR its essentially pointless
ok im really wanting to get vr now cause of vrchat
Same
killing for for VR is good π
Whats the best graphics card for vive
GTX1080(Ti) would be the best IMO
Alittle, cheaper?
It work well?
yeah
How much is one?
on my friends Im getting a Vive for christmas
https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-GAMING-Support-08G-P4-5173-KR/dp/B01KVZBNY0 one of these are 529$
1060 6GB - 1080Ti
DO NOT PLAY VR WITH THE 3GB 1060 my friend had one we wanted to die when we played w/ it
I will get 1070
I like the 1070s my friend is upgrading to a 1080ti on christmas
Im getting the gtx 1080ti in may
yay!
π
r.i.P
π π π π π π π π π π
Any good team red cards for vr?
sure but why founders?
cheaper
1050ti?
VR in a VM?
uh idk
no dedicated graphics...
My friend is getting a new pc for christmas, his mom asked me what to get. She almost got a $2000 all in one
We built a 1070ti build
wow good
Rip my dreams for portable vr cause my laptop has a 1060 3 gb lol
Even my Dell XPS with its 1050 4Gb is doing a decent job for VR
@strange tusk my friends pc had a 1060 3gb ... it was very "fun" to play with
The only thing is I can't use it in direct mode (because of the integrated intel chipset that is controlling the HDMI port, even when using a Thunderbolt 3 dongle)
whats direct mode? me and my friend never had to mess with that
Using the Vive but not as a monitor but an output device
ah
This is a special mode where the GPU is composing the image before outputing it to the headset (put the Steam overlay on a game for example)
oh ok
So basically your saying it ainβt gonna be the best
it was fine but dont expect to multi task w/ it
Yeah I know that
some games wont like its 3gb of vram but it was ok
I'm planning on a build for my brother and I'm trying to get a sub $500 system with a ryzen 3 1200 with a gtx 1050 ti and 8gb ram. He will be using the Oculus rift so if anyone has a similar config could they let me know how performance is with that CPU and GPU config
ehhhhhhhh..... you really should go a tad bit more, get a 1060 6gb at least for VR
what about using a Core i3-8100
and @scarlet robin the 1050Ti is the minimum spec for the Rift
@scarlet robin @cyan drum this is about my 6th vr build I have done. simply asking for any first hand knowledge on the ryzen 3 1200 bc this would be the first build I did w it
I would assume it falls under recommended specs....
my Core i7 6700Hq 4c @ 2.90GHz is Rift and Vive ready
the r3 1200 is 4c/no ht @ 3.10GHz....
@cyan drum there are many hardware spoofers but I know I can get it to 3.4-3.5ghz and it's a 4 core cpu
but its not the recommended specs only min
Obviously he won't be able to do any supersampling with it but I'm curious if it hits 90fps on some games
Ya it's gonna be a win 10 r3 1200 gtx 1050 ti 8gb ram. I got everything for $400 before the windows copy. The last budget build I did was a i5-7400 8gb ram gtx 1060 6gb and it does decent for my friend
Paying for windows in 2017 LUL
get pirated 7 and https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade
Microsoft is committed to accessible technologies that empower people with disabilities to achieve more.
lol
For the i5 build I did for my friend, some reason he got full access to windows 10 out of nowhere
Like he kept considering a kinguin copy of it to get rid of the upgrade to win 10 watermark but something happened where he got like full access
I can use the same liscense on 2 windows 10 installs π
yeah get a kinguin copy
but with protection π π π π π π π π π
Yay!
Now prepare your wallet for the what-seems 800 must-have VR titles
Lol
opinions on the mixed reality headsets
crap
^ Yeah, thats about all to be said about them
Lol
oh thats cool, SteamVR opens when you turn on the controllers
@ivory parrot +1 holy shit robo recall is amazing
Lone echo is the best VR game I've ever played by a long shot though
2 days of having the Vive me and my mom and dad have spent 9 hours in VR
What is the cheapest VR headset on the market that is even worth buying
What is bad about them? The price is so much easier to pay
I like the Vive. I've played with both, rift and vive and the Vive has something to it that I like.
Friend got a Rift this year when I got a Vive this year. Soo it's weird. But he's keeping his Vive.
Gear is boring
Phone gets super hot
Cant use glasses
No cobtrolkers
No walking
I was asking for the Gear VR for the S8 then was like..... VIVE!
I mean like this one: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-mixed-reality
lol
They fit my moms glasses and my friends mom's glasses....
oh @austere perch Windows MR
Ye
The price is easier for me to justify paying
Those are all money
Idk if they are worth it
That's good enough... 6GB or 3GB?
6
Yeah that's good
Ok
I have a question... In steamVR what's supersampling?
Idk
Running the game at a higher resolution than the lenses
my laptop screams already... 1070
Anyone know of a good Vive controller stand?
A table ?
And now I want LA Noire VR :
https://9gag.com/gag/a88PdK1 (video)
https://i.imgur.com/2m3aGue.png
Google going with the dinosaur error themes and STEAM VR WORK
well i got a vr headset and its been fun as hell to play vr chat and other vr titles
i love it

a oculus rift with 3 sensors
nice
for full 360
I got the Vive while my friend got the rift
the rift is great for the price
atleast he already owns the Vive. π
i would of got the vive if i could
what games are good to get?
the lab
the labs good
keep talking and nobody explodes
home - a vr space walk
google earth vr
bigscreen
tilt brush
i played something simuler to tilt brush
Richie's Plank Experience
yeah i think i know the rest
π
waiting on stupid steam https://i.imgur.com/Ro4ou0h.png
nice
my play area
i have used my rift for making maps in Unreal Engine 4 with the vr editor
and its really cool
cool!
yeah
the only thing i dont like about oculus is the floor setup
how hard is it?
well you have to tell it how tall you are and im like 6.07ft but i can only put 6.1ft
for the vive all you do is lay the controller on the floor and press calabrate floor
and i wish you could just put it on the floor
i dont know why oculus wont do that
i can track my controllers on my floor
just fine
then it uses how far the headset is up from the floor and bam?
I think.. idk
for the Vive
wow
so you put on the headset to calibrate
thats stupid...
yup
the vive never asks you to put on the headset during setup
like just let me put the headset on the floor
idk the headset turns it self off when you take it off so.
setp 1: is everything tracking and ok?
setp 2: pont and use the trigger to point at your monitor
step 3: calibrate floor
step 4: measure your play area
I think thats how it went
I dont want to do it agian its perfect rn
you have to pair the xbox controller to the rift? not the pc?
or does it connect it to the pc?
well i dont know, i dont have a xbox one controller
- the vive's gui is dark theme I like it
well its not plugged in.... https://i.imgur.com/UzMNcmf.png
i hope it isnt found
USEFUL! https://i.imgur.com/DUyt6sm.png
i always have that message because of the ir sensor in the headset that tells it when your head is in the headset or not
lol
lol
like it knows its a rift so it should just turn off the message
but the steam vr games are really fun like pavlov is good
my vr games list is not that big on steam
nice
like this is only 50% of it
javaw is minecraft?
i have it
its the only time i play minecraft
i have a minecraft modded server with vivecraft
even people with non vr can see me
its cool
can you do this in the bkgrd? https://i.imgur.com/l69Vsa0.png
rip people who wanna buy the vive but dont have prime https://i.imgur.com/LFYLzh8.png
π¦
yeah
I think that is normal price now
The Rift is definitely the way to go. I have both and even have tha deluxe audio strap and Vive'n'chill but my Vive is nearly useless compared to my Rift. It is mostly the controllers, but the comfort is also important and the content is the top of VR right now. I use my Vive when travelling since it does really well in small areas. (it does decent in larger areas as well, but not as well as a Rift with three or four sensors)
Tbh the only benefit to the vive is that you don't have to have the sensors connected via USB
Once set up, tracking on both is indestinguishable from eachother
Oculus is MUCH lighter and more comfortable than the vive even with the audio strap
Controllers are way better
More games
Cheaper
Right. The other small benefit of the Vive is the camera, however it is so low resolution that it is almost useless, except to move large objects in or out of a playspace, such as a chair. The screens are the same, however I actually like the oculus lenses better--although, that portion is strictly opinion-based. Once a third sensor is added for the Rift though, the tracking is way better.
The only time I played with the rift is when I used it before the touch controllers came out. I had to use a Xbox controller I didnt know how to use one.
@charred delta yeah the camera is only good for seeing what objects are in the room π
The right thing to do if you are thinking about buying a Vive right now is: buy a Rift, an extra sensor, two active 15-foot USB 3.0 extension cables, one 15-foot HDMI (1.4+) cable, one active HDMI coupler, a PCI-e USB 3.0 card, and an external USB 3.0 Hub. Then, since you still have $100 left compared to a Vive, buy some games from the Oculus store. You may be tempted to buy on Steam, however the Oculus software runs the Rift extremely smoothly compared to SteamVR running the Rift or Vive.
hahahahahahahahahahaha usb extensions
@cyan drum It was advertized as being for talking with people without lifting the headset.
yup
@cyan drum, Like I said, my Vive is used for travelling because it is more portable.
But otherwise, it is such a worse experience that it is almost never used at home.
weird
good luck though My vive isnt plugged in
you unplug it when your done?
oh ok
i have a gaming laptop but it broke right now
i would be using it for vr though
π¦
yeah refreshed the page and SteamVR poped up. It was closed completely
weird
the only thing that it could be if webvr can turn on steamvr
but idk if it can or not becuase i dont own a vive
as soon as I opened it SteamVR launches via chrome too...
weird. Doesn't happen on my pc
After returning and getting, Mixed Reality, Rift, Vive
I realized
They all suck
Waste of money
The end
Bye
Lol why? You probably were just playing the wrong games or had a bad computer
has anyone gotten the PSVR working properly on PC?
it would be nice to get that working on pc because of the price of a psvr.
i think people are working on it
The tracking is worse than vive and rift tho
well yeah
and the res of the headset is not so good
like 720p in eatch eye
i think
Eww... 720p each eye...
So I got a htc vive vr headset and I do have a 1060 3 gb but it actually does pretty good for performance for games such as job simulator and rec room
yeah
People told me that it was bad but itβs actually pretty good I also got fallout 4 vr for free so yay me but probs gotta turn the graphics down lol
Yeah
I have a 970 and I play vr games on the htc just fine
yup
my friend is using his aero 15 1060 6GB to run the Rift and he did use his 1060 3GB to power a Vive.
@forest cradle
π nice!
Thanks
I bought the rog g20 so I have e basically no chance of upgrading anything without getting a new case and fans
Wish I could upgrade my graphics card
welp i got my laptop working, so now i have a better gpu to play vr with
nvm the thing is messing up again ; (
ffs
You could look for a small graphics card that has the same voltage as the 970 @hasty lagoon
I usually play job simulator and zomday even tho I have a 1060 3 gb
My friends "Whats the Veve?"
Me "Vive?"
Them "Yeah! What is it?"
Me "Its a VR headset for my PC"
gal gun vr is weird, you can invite girls to your house
...
God I want a vive
My buddy, who has been doing a lot of vr stuff, says rift is the way to go
I love the Vive
I have no measure of what's better.
The rift had more boxiness to the eyes than the Vive
I wish steamVR and Oculus rift software worked together...
Steam only works with Vive?
π¦
It's recommended that you use the rift software than using steamVR for the rift
Ahh okay
Steam VR runs just as well on the Rift as the Vive, but the Oculus software itself runs better than SteamVR. This is from optimizations with both the device and with the graphics cards. The downside with the Rift using SteamVR is that is is running both at once, but Oculus is pretty light in comparison so if you have a decent gaming rig, IE a little bit above the min-spec for VR, you should be able to run SteamVR without any issues.
So the moral is, if you own a Rift, get games that are on both platforms through the Oculus store since it will run slightly better--but don't be afraid of Steam VR!
My gut is telling me to go rift
Lol
Heres how it works:
-Need to move it around from not just one room? -> Vive
-Need to use only 1 USB port? -> Vive
-Needs to be cheap? -> Rift
-Needs to be the best experience as of this moment? -> Rift
-Needs future compatibility with third party hardware? -> Vive
I prefer the vive over the rift
Lens wise, everything is dependent on personal taste
try both before buying either
rifts are a little harder to find trials though for. MS stores typically have vive demos however
steam vr on mac
@whole fossil EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
YESSSS
its using the metal api
Get an HTC Vive - http://amzn.to/2zgRqmt Get an Oculus Rift - http://amzn.to/2zwyYaD Get an Akitio eGPU -http://amzn.to/2xMRUzP Get a mid-range VR PC - http:...
well no shit
its just cool that you can
the only nvidia gpu i have is not even vr ready
lol
i need to add my usb 3.0 pci card in this thing
is that a hackintosh?
no
its the mac towers that you can upgrade the cpu, ram, dvd drive and the pci slots
The older Mac Pros?
yep
Oh ok
it still runs great, when it was slow i just needed to get a better hd in it
ah
i even have another hd in this thing with windows on it
i got the cuda drivers
i cant wait to get oculus rift drivers for mac so i can throw up!
oh steam vr does but only like DK hardware ; (
Anyone played with f4 vr and virtuix?
hey friends... does anyone else here have an OSVR HDK2?
i want to die, ue4 keeps crashing when i want to retarget a skeletion
Rip
well it's mac it's not for games, i'm guessing you'd have more luck running it on linux than mac
and it's also not really for games
just picked up a rift, it was a steal at $399, couldnt resist
Only thing is routing cables through my room for the sensors, which isnt a problem with the vive, however, I have a pretty small room so it doesnt really matter. I 3D printed ceiling mount brackets for them and ran usb extension cables from my PC up the wall and across the edges of my ceiling. I mounted the two included sensors diagonally, one in the front right of my room and one in the back left, and have flawless 360 degree tracking. Touch controllers are nice, and the headset is very light and comfortable to wear, and the included headset mounted headphones are surprisingly good quality and way better than trying to play games with my bulky wireless headphones, which just end up flying off my head.
its also nice that it works with steamvr, so you can play practically any game
even if the game says it doesnt support the rift if its free i still download it and half the time the touch controllers still work even if it was meant for the vive controllers
Robo recall
You played it
Yet
Also get another sensor
Roomscale is nice
Very worth
I have roomscale
it works fine with only 2 sensors
i only have an 11x8ft play area
i havent had any issues with tracking and i have a 360 roomscale setup with only 2 sensors
i modded my robo recall to remove the "Turn to face sensors" message
Ok bois i need some advice
I am building a pc for my brother and im trying to keep it under $800 just to run Oculus VR games. I was thinking like a 7th gen i5 or a ryzen 3 or 5. problem is that I dont know Ryzen's VR performance
Yeah ive never had any issues with 2 sensors for roomscale things, you dont need a 3rd
ryzen is fine, vr is mostly determined from your gpu @sullen linden then again my ryzen is threadripper so might be different for lower ones rofl
also for the roomscale thing i have a Vive so maybe occulus is worse with only 2? not sure lol
@tacit vortex ya I have a 7700k and a 1080 Ti for my personal build and can run 2.0 supersampling on almost everything. My brother wonβt care about that since he knows he is getting a budget build so I was going to do the same type of build i did for a friend, just an i5-7400 (only one on sale at the time), 8gb ram, and a gtx 1060 6gb.
But I was curious to see if the Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 3 might be better so I could spend more on his gpu
id assume a ryzen 5 would be fine but also at the same time a 1060 6gb is enough too if he is only gaming 1080p and some vr stuff too
theres probably some benchmarks somewhere to compare
Iβd just stick to the i5
i'd look up benchmarks
Also check if vr is more multicore or single core heavy. I'm guessing that'd be major difference between them.
I have a gtx 1070 and i5 6500 and steamvr performance test says my computer performs well above what's recommended for vr
yup, my laptop has a gtx 1070 and a i7 6700k. it gets a good steamvr performace test and does well with my vive
yeah laptop 1070s run VR fine
same with laptop 1060 6GBs
its the vram i noticed
that would be an issue
mine is hitting 5.5gb usage
which is fine for the 6b cards
yeah
i5 != i7
games mostly don't use many cores... but i dunno how it's with vr games on average
i5 is like 2 cores ? + hyper threading..
I havent measured it, but SteamVR performace test says a Core i5 can run VR.
amd usually has 4 cores+but tend to be crap at single core
A Core i5 6600 is a 4c/no ht
though again would check benchmarks cause in the end it depends on a model
my friends r7 1700x and 1070 can power a vive and rift at the same time
if single core performance is comparable i'd prolly go for amd with moar cores
ah right 4 cores no ht
yeah
i5 myself ;p
π
just messed up which one it lacked ;p
I needed a i7 to get a) a 1070 laptop, b) video editing
i'd prolly go for amd for workstation though
especially after recent security issue with intels
yeah, my friend has a r7 1700x for his adobe pr, and ae workstation
lol
gg
They'll probably go back down once the patches go live though.
Or not.
Since it's a patch and not exactly a fix.
I'm tempted to get a Vive exclusively for VR chat lol
I won't buy the rift, owned by Facebook and made with shitty business practices
rip lol
well intel ceo sold his shares
and patch is likely to cause performance drop in some situations
up to 30% afaik
though games are unlikely to get affected afaik, it seems to be related to syscalls..
servers on the other hand...
imagine google or facebook servers losing 30% performance over a day
Rip
Theyll be switching to amd
Epyc baby
Epyc will certainly win amd some battles
And my amd can easily handle vr, its just the gpu is a peoblem
anyone here have Star Trek Bridge Crew?
And google revealed amd cpus have same security hole after all
after reading in seems amd is less affected
only spectre, intel is meltdown + spectre
i learned something new that fixes issues with steam vr for rift users
for some reason steam vr wont auto turn off the settings "Allow async reprojection" and "Allow interleaved reprojection." Turning it off fixed alot of issues with steam vr
so much GPU used while doing VR https://i.imgur.com/gtjllm3.png
how do you show GPU%
do you have the latest Windows update? @tacit vortex
well my pc feels 100x slower with windows 10
rip
cortana just crashed
π
i really dont like windows 10 but i need it for driver support
my disk usage is 100% all the time
Falls update?
the latest is creators
its the latest
1709 is the build number I think
I had to remove all the win gaming enhancements to be able to play after that update
well its hard for me to open firefox
well on windows 8.1 it was fast to start
Ff was always slow for me compared to other browsers
Firefox is faster for me to open than Chrome
well chrome gives me issues
firefox works better for me
plus firefox supports webvr and other shit i like
Anyway found some script @ nVidia forums that disabled all that junk
Windows gaming junk
nope its a 2 tb hd
That's why it's slow I guess
well on win 7, 8 it was really fast
Get ssd at least for os and stuff like browser
I dot think it's win issue
More like difference between versions issue
Ff switched to electron it's more of an resource hog
yeah but its just like chrome on resources
Dunno if only use Ff for script safe private prone browsing
Dunno then, like I said I quit on Ff before electron since it was slow for me
That said win 10 is working quite well for me.. aside post update junk.. after that I couldn't even play older games without stutter
Ah check your power savings and services
i already did that
Cortana froze.. HDD grind.. sounds like a scan
Search indexing, defrag, av, game scanning, torrents checking crc. .
well its not at 100% anymore
best storage to put windows 10 on, nvme ssds π
NSA using Corton a to check your pron
i dont have the money for that
Taskmaster got HDD usage field afair
no cortona https://i.imgur.com/JJhinmz.png
its firefox at the top with .2 mbs
Look system stuff it's separated
well all of the processes add up
You get user on top and system bellow
No, I mean win got them separated
User run processes and system run are on the bottom or hidden
It's kind of a mess
when you sort the services arent seperated
i got windows processes up
when by name yes, https://i.imgur.com/h4CbS2k.png
but i have to sort by name
by cpu, ram, hdd, network, gpu no
Then it's prolly win since its usually win fucking things up if they don't show
at lest my start menu is starting now
i uninstalled candy crush now
I use windows on my nvme ssd and its slow sometimes
I have 0 of the MS bloat
and 0 asus bloat
i have a laptop with one but the laptop is fucked up so i cant use it
and im going to get it repaired
It's mostly fast... if you disable junk and optimize services
The annoying part is that Ms after each big update decides to fix your settings
i dont think i have to but i can try, is installing the amd chipset drivers
for ryzen
I'd double check settings and services
Dunno boutique ryzen
Run malware scan just in case too
well my anti virus is already running
As don't detect Muhammad malwarw
windows upgrade didnt remove it
Prolly few more to come
Well gl, in case of gaming drop perfect lookup creators update on nVidia forums for a script. I'd also double check settings.. all since ms likes to change them for you and check which services you should disable... they also added few new ones.
Took me few hours to make it usable post update..
Or you can try Linux which has its own set of headaches
well no body compiles their vr games to linux
Not like it ever was a problem
i took the m.2 ssd out of my dead laptop and now using it on my desktop
i cant find out if its nvme or something
umm i did a google search and nothing comes up thats helpful
oh
this is my drive
that looks like what i have...
its a stata over the m.2 interface
modding is a great thing
i have learned the way of changing titles
shit wrong chat
well time to find a disk benchmark
i know my motherboard supported nvme
the blue is marked where oculus decided to start so idk if it would hurt it or not
yes @whole fossil that is sata
π
btw is nvme bootable or no?
yes
ok cool because i have to buy another one beucase the one im using is for my laptop so im going to get another m.2 ssd that nvme
and my motherboard supports it
ok
the one im getting is samsung
960 evo or 960 pro?
it says 960 evo
ok thats good π
960 pros are faster, and more storage.
the 960 evo is still fast but a tad slower.
well i just want windows to boot and work
so that should be good also faster than my hdd
i have 6tbs for other stuff
yeah os on ssd and big data on hdd
its helpful for game dev and other junk
im working on a vr game in UE4
im basicly making vrchat in ue4 to help with learning the engine
cool!
i have someone thats going to test the desktop version
rift with 3 sensors
π¦ i have a vive π
well you could still try it, ue4 will work with rift and vive
yeah.
the hard part is getting the avatars bones to match the controllers and head
there is a plugin on the marketplace to make it simple but i want to make it myself
π well if you feel like tearing out your hair use it
for my version of vr chat im going to have a settings page that will allow you to turn off affects on peoples avatars
so like fire or something else
ooh cool!
becuase on vrchat i hate that there is no settings
ive never played vrchat
porter robinson!
hell yeah

well my phone does that but chrome opens youtube when that happens
nope chrome, discord, and ios is stupid
XD
hmm risk some ssd space for fast ue4 loading
light and dark
nice
same
its 11:33PM I NEED DARK caps filter
ew
yeah, thats why I dont use white theme
reinstalling ue4 and also the best name i could come up with "GroupVr" XD
