It's that or a ... actually I can't think of anything better from that era.

Meh, a 240 would be cool I guess

drowsy kernel

my 97' passat's got AC though xDD

Volvos still have potential.

#

There's always the V8 swap.

indigo coral

My 99 RX still has excellent AC HaHAA

dense shard

Can't really do that with most other cars.

My 2011 Corsa still has excellent AC PogOK

I'll go to Ukraine in my 97' passat if i get any time frre of work welp...

I can drive to the beginning of the Missouri River.

Let's all buy BMW's and challenge Jake to a race.

Oh and winner gets to keep the bits that fall off.

The whole BMW's are unreliable meme is blown out of proportion

dense shard

Old ones sure, new ones aren't a meme.

well... okay not eve that tbh.

I've once seen one Romanian plates lada, completely covered by rust in my city, i'm full of respect t ithat dude going through the half of Europe in 30 YO car covered by rust in the middle of summer (no AC obviously)

dense shard

The new new ones are supposed to have fixed the issues.

You can't expect an automaker like Nissan and BMW to be happy with their meme. Both seem to have worked towards fixing issues.

Are there any good memes about toyota? pepothink

A second hand 5 series should be fine.

indigo coral

if you want a car that's been babied, get a Lexus ES

those are bought by people who actually care

Old people who do oil changes every 3000 miles.

indigo coral

because there's no "it's cool" aspect attached to them

That's kinda the nice thing about Lexus... even their "cool" cars end up bought by old people 🀣

Old people who do oil changes every 3000 miles.
@dense shard falcon = old confirmed

indigo coral

I do every 5k

I've been watching for a newer RX though, and holy shit they have crazy miles

I keep seeing them well beyond 200k

stoic ledge
dense shard

I do plan on keeping up with 5k oil change intervals.

indigo coral

@stoic ledge you know what I should do

drowsy kernel
#

@dense shard not really, my dad has been in car biz for 30 years and getting a good shape BMW 3/5/7 is a miracle 🀷 the same goes for audi a4, a8 and especially a3 (that I have always wanted..) so in the end i've settled with an "unwanted" passat b5 as it was easy to get one in a good shape

They're super common in the US.

drowsy kernel

@indigo coral yup

indigo coral

..is rolling back common where you live?

drowsy kernel
#

it used to be in Europe

stoic ledge
#

Poland*

dense shard

It's not really common in the US last I checked.

stoic ledge
#

Or Eastern Germany

indigo coral
#

my state you have to provide yearly odo statements to your insurance who forwards it to the state

#

and its a crime not to

stoic ledge
#

Well technically you can roll it back between those statements

drowsy kernel
#

yup

dense shard
#

Alabama does not.

indigo coral
#

you can but its not really worth jail time

#

lool

#

it's rare for cars to be rolled back here

dense shard
#

honestly is cheaper.

drowsy kernel
#

lol can u really go to jail for sth like this though? xD

dense shard
#

yes

stoic ledge
#

Most modern cars can't even be rolled back I think

dense shard
#

Tampering with odometer is a federal offence.

drowsy kernel
#

but anyway, any good car mechanic can tell if the milage is real, i mean the wear is visible eitherway

dense shard
#

Depends on the car and region.

#

In the Southeast wear isn't very obvious.

drowsy kernel
#

the thing i totally love in Germany is that they don't cheat when selling cars too bad it is not always the case in other states

@drowsy kernel thonk Germany is know for rolling back odometers

dense shard

man.

#

Polestar cars look great.

drowsy kernel
#

I think it';s just eastenn dealers who import cars from DE

#

dunno

dense shard

I'd take it over a Tesla easy.

drowsy kernel
#

I've gotten my car from friend in Lipzig eitherway 🀷

stoic ledge
#

Meh idk I've seen them in a country west from Germany too often rolled back

#

Polestar > Tesla by 393929x

drowsy kernel

i've gotten tired of looking through 2nd hand listings and ended up getting one from a friend who has had if since it was brand new 🀷

dense shard

I know it's not the range, or EV infrastructure.

#

But the styling and quality is excellent.

indigo coral
#

it looks unfinished to me

#

idk why

drowsy kernel
#

there is no infrastucture for EVs, they have barely any range and gas (I mean real gas not benzine) is so cheap that it makes EVs irrelevantfor now

indigo coral
#

tesla has the supercharger network in the US

#

which unfortunately makes them the only viable EVs

#

and I refuse to buy a tesla

#

the cars are nice, but the company is horrible

drowsy kernel
#

in the US.. US only

#

in ol' good Europe gas is still the cheapest option

some love diesels too

indigo coral

y'all think gas is cheap

#

its like 2.40 a gallon rn here

#

vs like 1.5 euro a liter or whatever

drowsy kernel
#

by gas I mean gas yanks use for griilling sousages... yankie gas is called benzine in here and costs 2x the gas

#

so the gas is like 0.5-0.7€ per litter

indigo coral

"yanks"?

@drowsy kernel
I wonder what infrastructure do you mean and for what.
Usually u have about 300km range on a mid-range BEV and Tesla Superchargers are a point along highways along other companies who try to build up own infrastructure.
And for everything daily-basis, just a regular power plug (with good wiring to prevent overheat) should be fine to supply enough power for a car.
After all, the power grid was already ready for EVs 50yrs ago when at saturday/sunday noon, most households across the countries started up their electric cooking pots consuming 3kW+ for over one hour, running a 3kW vaccum cleaner for half an hour and such... Power grid management advanced, load balancing too. Wiring got better with Infrastructure..
Cars stay most of their time.
If you charge 10hrs per day at home with lets say 3kW while sleeping, you can get 30kWh in it every day. With an consumption of about 200Wh/km (20kWh/100km), thats 150km to drive per day just by one normal power plug.
Not including transfer/convertion loss to make the point easier

fathom socket
#

And at least speaking of Germany, I can get a factory-new 4-seater BEV with about 260km range for round about 10 grand.
In Sweden, you don't need to pay tax for getting one, which render them cheaper than in Germany for higher priced ones.

#

I'm just gonna to get an electric motorcycle

#

I thought about it... But for smaller vehicles which especially drive fast(er), energy density is more important than on larger, slower vehicles.
And yet batteries do not surpass gasoline fuel tanks in useable energy density per volume.
And since everyone which is 25+yrs old in Germany and own the default B-Class car driving license for 5+yrs is allowed to drive motorcycles by now, I'm thinking about getting a KTM Duke or a Kawasaki Ninja.
Havn't decided yet between team orange and green.
Or I just get myself a quad.

#

I can drive after 3 year a 125 cc motorcycle

#

Yeah, but u have to do a seperate license for driving motorcycles

#

Now I can only drive 50cc with no more than 4kw

#

With standard b drivers license

#

I'm gonna to do a2

#

Ah yeah... AM is a thing. πŸ˜„

#

Because I need a license to even drive a moped here

#

I only know about Licenses in Germany^^
Dont know about Poland

#

I have driven a 4 kw scooter

#

It want fun

#

By that I mean even with 4 kw it felt like I was gonna to die

#

The instant torque on such small vehicle

#

125cc 11kW πŸ‘
As electrical bike, 33kWp at 125cc limitation.
Because 11kW limit is meant as sustained specified output, not peak. πŸ˜›

#

I need a license to be able to drive motorcycles in Switzerland

#

I can't even drive 50 cc crap here

#

A lot of people have vespas here

#

And renault twizies

#

I'm Jeremy Clarkson when it comes to motorcycle

#

Now I'm gonna to have a 15 hour trip back to Poland

#

When I slept 1 hour

#

Great

#

Just great

dense shard
#

Just to go back to density for batteries.

#

Sure batteries can't store as much power, but EVs are vastly more efficient. Remember a car will waste ~60% of the fuel's energy potential.

#

An EV will use the majority of the power for motion.

fathom socket
#

Still the fuel density for gasoline cars is higher.
Just by taking the useable energy.

dense shard
#

Sure, but EVs aren't that radically far off.

#

Ultimately. My car's range isn't that much different from what Tesla offers.

tame jungle
#

I honestly would wish for a Lightning

#

but 30k on a motorcycle is too much

civic girder
#

I mean, the RX-7 has about as much range as some Teslas. Around 200-250 miles depending on driving. But the big difference comes in that the RX-7 is so much more fun to drive, has better noises, an interior that isn't summed up as an iPad, and can "recharge" in less than 2 minutes rather than 30+ minutes

#

and no anxiety of having an EV. Sure, range is similar, but with the RX-7 I can rest assured that I will be able to find a station that carries the fuel I need. Also don't have to worry about features being disabled for no reason

#

and on the other end of the spectrum, the Prius has about as much range as longer range Teslas

#

Still has a better interior, same thing with refueling and features.

#

And there's overall cost. Why bother buying a Tesla, even a used one, when I can get similar ranged cars of similar build quality and feature sets for much less

dense shard
#

Let's not drag Tesla too much here. A lot of people appreciate the issues.

#

But say an Audi or Mercedes EV.

civic girder
#

I would say the Audi and Merc EVs are in a similar boat

dense shard
#

They're legacy automakers. So I don't think they'll remove features randomly.

civic girder
#

Higher build quality and better company reputation, but similar throughout the rest

dense shard
#

Better build quality to boot.

civic girder
#

yea, they won't disable features; but they still are plagued by EV issues

fierce gate
#

Guys, I have a confession to make.

dense shard
#

Charge time.

fierce gate
#

I want a 1980 Buick Century

civic girder
#

long charging times, no guarantee you'll find a charging station, etc

dense shard
#

Give it time.

#

Also I'd say charging and/or fueling isn't an issue.

civic girder
#

I want a 1980 Buick Century
@fierce gate Go for it. There is no wrong choice when it comes to cars. Long as you can live with the problems it may have, and like what it has to offer, you can't go wrong

fierce gate
#

Talking about EV adoption? @dense shard

dense shard
#

Nah, just pluses/minuses.

#

Adoption is early.

fierce gate
#

ah I see. I think it will happen in our lifetimes, but not to the extent some people want and over a longer cycle than expected

dense shard
#

our lives aboslutely.

#

By 2025? no

civic girder
#

Charging will likely continue to be a downside for a good while. Any way you look at it, its 10x faster to fill up a car with a large gas tank than it takes to quick charge an EV

fierce gate
#

The window I keep hearing is 12 years, but even that I think is fantasy

dense shard
#

EV infrastructure still is lacking as Eastman said.

fierce gate
#

I'm sure EV's will take a big chunk of the market by then though.

dense shard
#

Tho most people don't really travel longer distances.

#

So charging at home or gasing up at one station is fine.

fierce gate
#

oh yeah. The US power grid may literally need an overhaul that has yet to even be discussed or planned seriously

dense shard
#

Microgrids.

fierce gate
#

I think it will start accelerating once gas stations start adding EV "pumps"

dense shard
#

I'd invest in any company that starts installing EV charging stalls at any gas station.

fierce gate
#

Consumer shouldn't need to think about where chargers are. They should just go where they already do (gas stations)

#

assuming home charging doesn't just become the only thing you need. idk

dense shard
#

To be totally fair.

#

Come to the plains and gas stations become a concern.

#

They aren't there at every exit like I was used to in the Southeast.

civic girder
#

Yea, but you also have to remember that it isn't as big a concern as you think

#

Back in the day, cars had giant tanks to compensate for low efficiency

#

now, cars are more efficient

dense shard
#

I mean... 12 gallons ain't that big.

civic girder
#

what do you get for highway mpg?

dense shard
#

What speed?

civic girder
#

~70-75

fierce gate
#

I'm concerned about the lack of service stations and trained technicians more than I am charger availability

dense shard
#

ugh

#

mid 30s.

#

maybe

civic girder
#

Yea, that's actually quite a bit of range

fierce gate
#

If you don't live in a major hub right now and your tesla needs warranty work it'll be gone for 2 weeks on a rollback

#

and most people do everything via the warranty or at the dealer.

civic girder
#

if I'm driving highway only, I can milk ~500-600 miles out of a single tank in the Prius

dense shard
#

That's less an EV issue and more of a Tesla issue.

civic girder
#

^

fierce gate
#

Well yeah. That's one thing that I think the establishment car companies will have a huge advantage with

civic girder
#

Audis and such are better about work since you can literally just take it to the dealership you got it from

dense shard
#

Much in the same way that charging infrastructure is more of an EV issue than Tesla issue.

fierce gate
#

Musk isn't experienced in this field. I think he underestimated the value of dealerships. It's not just about selling cars, but distributing parts and service

dense shard
#

There's also the issue of local laws forbidding Tesla's model.

fierce gate
#

Ford etc has spent the last decade training technicians quietly for hybrids. They've slowly been building the infanstructure. Where Tesla tried to do without

dense shard
#

You don't need an infrastructure for hybrids.

#

And Ford's issues remain in QC and products.

fierce gate
#

Sure you do. Shit breaks and wears down on all cars, even EV's

dense shard
#

Training techs not to lick the terminals isn't going to put Ford forward.

#

And Ford's attempts hinge on a 3rd party.

#

Some pie in the sky name that doesn't have a good rep.

fierce gate
#

Nobody is saying that it will put them forward, but that they have a slight advantage in that they already have the locations and technicians in place

#

also, we're not talking about Ford exclusively but any of the major car companies.

#

This is the one thing they have that Tesla can't easily replicate.

dense shard
#

If Tesla allowed dealerships, they could.

fierce gate
#

Sure, but they so far seem against the idea.

dense shard
#

That's on them.

fierce gate
#

Sure
