@civic girder I don't own a heatgun but I do own an oven :)

civic girder
#

I mean, thats true

#

but you probably shouldn't cook food in an oven after you used it to bake car parts

normal temple
#

I live my life on the edge whytho

civic girder
#

and you can get a cheap heatgun for like $20 and it will do the job

#

but that's just my two cents

too poor now after ordering LEDs

Anyone know what the best Blinker fluid is?

I own a BMW, we don't use blinkers.

jagged coyote
#

Question: do you still need fluid for led blinkers?

fair bronze
#

Yes but they use way less

carmine summit
#

you only have to check them annually, unlike the incandescent versions

#

also make sure you get the synthetic, the conventional fluid will damage the LED cooler. Conventional is fine in incandescent systems, but the synthetic lasts longer and you can use it with LEDs too.

fathom socket
#

I quit using blinker fluid when I switched to LED's

#

The LED's I purchased had a big heatsink on them and required no extra cooling from any liquid

jagged coyote

oh wow, where can i get those?

When changing my blinker fluid I always make sure to change crankshaft coolant also

also, reeeeeee its snowing

#

the city better not panic and salt the roads

unreal terrace

salted roads = rip RX7 @civic girder

fathom socket
#

I had to wash my car a thousand times underneath after doing through salted roads

#

Because rust

fair bronze
#

I'd rather give the bottom a protective coating of some sort

unreal terrace
#

Salted roads =
rip old Japanese cars

civic girder
#

Yea

#

the RX-7 has an undercoat, but the areas up by the front wheels is peeling up because there were no mudflaps

#

so that area has already started to rust a bit

#

I want to get the rust repaired and the entire car's rust proofing updated.

#

And then get some mudflaps to install up front to prevent it from happening again. I think adding front mudflaps would also help make it look better as it looks kinda weird with just rear mudflaps

fathom socket
civic girder
#

Well, idk if that method is going to work

fathom socket
#

I've used Bondo and wire mesh to fix rust many times

fathom socket
#

That rust isn't bad at all

civic girder
#

Yea, not really. But I would like to get it repaired before it gets worse

fathom socket
#

Use rust stopper and fill it with Bondo and paint it

civic girder
#

I'd probably start by getting out a wire wheel and peeling up the undercoat and clear up some of the rust

#

see if it's just surface, or if its deeper

fathom socket
#

That seems like the logical action

#

What undercoat did you get

civic girder
#

Its the undercoat the previous owner got back in the 80s

#

(he was the original owner)

fathom socket
#

Damn, I hope he didn't get the Ziebart undercoating

civic girder
#

No, I don't think so

#

there's a Rusty Jones sticker

fathom socket
#

The Ziebart undercoating is really baf

#

*bad

civic girder
#

oh really?

fathom socket
#

Yes

civic girder
#

I was considering getting it touched up by Ziebart

#

but idk where else I'd go as they seem to be the only place around here

fathom socket
civic girder
#

ah, South Main Auto, great channel

fathom socket
#

Yep

indigo coral
#

no undercoating on my car

#

Not worth the money here

civic girder
#

that's apparently what my car has

indigo coral
#

they salt the roads like once a year at most

civic girder
#

sadly they are dead, or I'd go have them update the rustproofing

indigo coral
#

Usually they don't even salt, they've got the liquid/sand mix instead of salt

civic girder
#

oh, there is a Krown place around here I guess

#

well, I guess I'll have to call them up instead of Ziebart

indigo coral
#

Literally there's no stores like that here, just generic "car shop"/mechanics

#

Lol

civic girder
#

@fathom socket there is a Krown about an hour north of me. I suppose go there instead? Or maybe attempt it myself (though I have no lift)?

fathom socket
#

Never heard of Krown

civic girder
#

South Main Auto mentions it

fathom socket
#

Read reviews for different places

civic girder
#

there's not many places around here

#

from what I can find, there's Ziebart and Krown, and then I think most shops will use off the shelf spray stuff

fathom socket
#

You could always get Line-X

civic girder
#

Line-X?

fathom socket
#

The toughest undercoating ever

#

I have it on my truck

#

It's also super expensive

civic girder
#

There is apparently a Line-X close to me

damn hydrogen owners getting fucked rn

civic girder
#

This is why you don't buy a car that requires a fuel source where the infrastructure for such a fuel is nonexistent

#

Instead, you stay Prius.

night current
#

Electric isnt bad tbh, just drive up to McDonalds, plug in, and get a few miles extra... xD

#

Hydrogen cars are no where near practical yet in today's standard, its already a push for electric. Which is why people buy hybrids for a reliable combo

indigo coral
#

hydrogen cars are just a crackpot money grab by Toyota

#

tbh

civic girder

It was a fun experiment when we thought hydrogen might be the future

Hydrogen remains exotic tech.

#

Buying it with the expectation of convenience is like buying an EV with the expectation you never need to actually charge it.

#

It's like the people who buy an EV and think they can just pop down to the local gas station and... oh wait shit you can't do that. They need this thing called electricity.

People who buy a Jeep thinking it's a decent road car. 😂

30k for a soft top truck without AC.

fair bronze
#

Is the Gladiator the pickup one

stoic ledge
#

Idk it's one of the last cars you can truly take off-road, the only convertible truck

#

Yes, the Gladiator is the pickup Wrangler

dense shard
#

Being the only one in a field doesn't negate the fact it can be overpriced.

#

Fact remains that the new Jeep isn't a huge upgrade over the last generation, and yet it went up in price quite dramatically.

stoic ledge
#

I'm not saying they aren't overpriced, but I can see why you'd want one

fair bronze
#

It does look cool imho

dense shard
#

super cool

#

But at 30k for a toy?

fair bronze
#

Though it's not something I'd buy personally

dense shard
#

The Miata is also pushing it... but it's not obviously overpriced.

fair bronze
#

The Miata is worth it imo

civic girder
#

The Miata is hands down the best driver's car of today

#

Until Mazda makes another rotary sports car

#

then the Miata will be old news

dense shard
#

If Mazda makes a new RX-7.

#

You know it'll cost over 50k, right?

stoic ledge
#

So it will be 75568k here

#

Good to know

#

🤔 I can't seem to be able to configure a 2020 MX-5 in 🇳🇱, only in stock 2019 models 🤔

fair bronze
#

At least

dense shard
#

Mazda is slow on releasing new models

stoic ledge
#

Ah, nice

civic girder
#

eh, the FD (adjusted for inflation) was only $56k ($32k 1993 dollars). That's not bad for what you got. I can see a new rotary sports car being over $50k, but the Miata exists at sub $30k prices. If they made a slower rotary sports car, like the na FC and the FB, they could probably keep prices below $40k. Now, if they made it a speed demon like the FD was, $50k+ makes perfect sense.

#

I mean, hell, a brand new FB (adjusted for inflation) costs $30k in 2020 money. A sub 200hp rotary sports car built on a similar platform to the Miata, sharing Miata parts (such as suspension and brakes), could definitely be relatively cheap.

#

A lot of it would depend on if they go turbo or not.

#

if its turbo, it'll be making some power, and it won't be cheap

#

but if they go true to the RX-7's roots and keep it na, it'll be cheap

#

Not Miata cheap, ofc, but still a good price

@fathom socket yes pfp

fathom socket
#

i dont see why they would unban it for a very long time

#

no reason

civic girder
#

I don't think its gonna work out very well

#

even in Europe, EV infrastructure is still virtually nonexistent

#

You can't just up and ban ICE sales overnight

#

If they gradually force ICE sales to decline over time while they build up infrastructure and give manufacturers time to develop new EV models it could work

stoic ledge
#

"You're thinking in problems, not solutions" ~ EU, shoving there problems in to the laps of their citizens

civic girder
#

yea, no one seems to understand that we can't just wake up one morning and magically all have EV infrastructure, tons of cheap EVs to choose from, and long range super ultra fast charging batteries

#

The only way I can see this not being a shitshow is if they do something like this:
-All current ICE vehicles are grandfathered in and not banned.
-ICE sales are forced to decline, likely through some sort of sales cap; i.e. companies in the EU can only sell 'x' number of ICE cars per year (hybrids could have a larger sales cap over traditional ICEs)
-EVERY country in the EU heavily begins to invest in charging infrastructure in public places (parks, government buildings, etc) and strongly encourage businesses to setup charging infrastructure as well
-Commercial vehicles are still allowed to be sold with ICE. Maybe begin a push towards hybrids.

This would give people an incentive to buy hybrids and EVs, and would force manufacturers to develop broader ranges of EV models and find ways to get cheaper models on the market (ideally, range of current mid-range EVs, but at the prices of cars like Corollas and Civics).

stoic ledge
#

Nah, the best solution is:

  • More tax on ICE cars

Upsides:

  • More revenue for the government since people still have to buy ICE since EVs are still unaffordable

And that's it. Works like a charm Pogey

civic girder
#

that's whats going to happen

But I like my plan better

Iirc, the reason why they legalized it is to be able to regulate it, make sure you can buy stuff that's checked, safe etc, vs street bought of which the origin unknown is

nah

#

that's called "realizing you have a problem, and not doing anything about it"

fathom socket

Yep

civic girder
#

iirc Colorado's reason was to boost the economy

#

don't quote me tho, I never fucking pay attention to the news, lmao

that's called "realizing you have a problem, and not doing anything about it"

We're good at that Pogey

dense shard
#

small tax on ICE to fund charging infrastructure

#

Why not tax EVs to fund their own infrastructure expansion?

#

I want my gas tax to go towards bridge and road upkeep.

stoic ledge
#

That's what we have road tax for Pogey

#

For which, ofc, EVs don't have to pay

fair bronze
#

Unfair

dense shard
#

Tax charging rates by kilowatt/hour.

#

We charge by unit of fuel, charge by unit of energy. Almost the same thing.

fair bronze
#

Our tax system is unfair

fathom socket
#

how much would y'all reccomend selling an 09 ford fusion plus for?

#

its got 65k miles

dense shard
#

I'd check KBB

indigo coral
#

1 kwh is very different than 1 gallon of gas tho

dense shard
#

You can input all the options it has, and go from there.

indigo coral
#

Having the same tax on each would be fucking absurdly expensive

dense shard
#

You don't have to tax a kwh the same as a gallon.

#

My point is to charge per unit of energy.

#

We could change over to just flat out charging by kwh regardless of fuel source meaning we could charge all alternative fuels equally.

carmine summit
#

I think there needs to not be a charge at first while people transition

#

Then charge

eager kite
#

most people charge their cars at home though, are you suggesting to add a tax to all residential power costs?

carmine summit
#

Not all residential power, but have 2 meters

#

One for the house, one for the chargers

#

Road tax on the charger, normal tax that already exists on the house

#

Road tax is pretty important, it makes up a good chunk of funding for infrastructure maintenance

#

It also goes into my bank account during the summer because I work for the local municipality as a summer job

dense shard
#

I'm sure something can be worked out. It's that or assess a flat fee per year for EV drivers.

#

Which a few states have started doing.

eager kite
#

seems like it would lower the amount of people who would get EVs.

#

the price to get a second meter and breaker box for the meter, and then getting the charger and having it all wired is not cheap

#

like the charger + wiring is $500-$1000 already, and that's with all the electrical work already done for a breaker box and proper wiring from the meter.

dense shard
#

You don't need a second meter installed.

#

You can install some hardware to measure energy usage at the charger.

#

Tesla fans are already fine with data harvesting, and I don't see this being a huge issue.

#

Make it optional.

#

People can either pay extra per year for registration, mileage based, or charge based.

#

EV owners will stay pay less than the average ICE whatever... especially with America's crossover/SUV fetish.

#

I think a second circuit in a residential setup is horrific overkill in which people would bypass by just charging their cars on 240V or just using a 120V outlet. Fuck paying thousands extra so the state can track me. Any payment scheme should be cheap and convenient to implement.

#

IoT chargers would be enough.

#

"You can install some hardware to measure energy usage at the charger"
This is what meters do...

#

but this still wouldn't be cheap, would have to come from the utility company and would need to be integrated like existing meters.

dense shard
#

Nah. let chargers integrate it into an app or something.

#

They can track energy usage via app.

#

Link app to whatever system is used to track usage.

#

So ideally you won't even have to use new hardware... or better yet let the car self report it's charge rate. So you won't be charged for the energy used rather the energy taken on. Mind you I imagine chargers are hellishly efficient.

indigo coral
#

Bruh same! @deep trench

eager kite
#

hmm, yea that could work

#

I don't think most chargers have that functionality, but I know that Tesla's new wall chargers have internet functionality now, so maybe they could do that.

#

chargers are decently efficient but it's still a noticeable loss

indigo coral
#

factor that in

#

weight it in favor of the ev owner, say you average out a 5% loss (hypothetical number), can easily weight that out of the tax burden given from the use of Kwh

eager kite
#

yea it can obv be accounted for. Could even just measure the amount of energy pulled by charger, thereby including inefficiencies.

#

Seems like Tesla's are around 90% efficient @ 8kw

indigo coral
#

yikes, i'd have expected a bit more but idk how that compares to other EVs

#

I'm excited for the Lucid Air to come out, as a side note

#

that thing looks SICK

eager kite
#

that 90% is counting all losses from the breaker panel to the car's battery energy going up

#

like the wiring alone can pull a couple hundred watts out of an 8kw line

#

plus you have the ac-dc rectifier in the car, along with battery cooling systems
