The ecotecs had tons of timing chain issues.
Step 1) Make sure the oil is at max
Step 2) Keep it there
If oil at max -> nothing will happen
If oil under 1/2 -> corner fast, chain can run dry and stretch
@stoic ledge Over max so you have extra leftover
I'm happy that my E46 isn't burning oil.
Driven like 10,000 km's without noticing any oil loss.
Since the last oil change, that is.
@stoic ledge It wasn't just the timing chain, it was all the tensioners as well as the cam phasers that were known to break.
And, it's important that you change the oil a 3,000 miles instead of what computer tells you. There was actually a recall on some of the Ecotecs stating that the oil be changed early. But it goes for all of them, change the oil every 3,000 miles, and it'll last you till 200,000 miles.
I know very little about the 2016-present Ecotecs though. My Dad has a 2017 Chevy Cruze 1.4l Ecotec, it has almost 60,000 miles on it. And it's never had any issues besides the throttle position sensor on the gas pedal which was replaced under warranty. And I don't know if you would count the radiator and the turbo, because they were replaced after an accident.
Those are European Ecotecs by Opel, those are good
I know the transmission on my Dad's car isn't the strongest though.
When he first got it, the tranny would slip all the time.
Now it seems to be okay.
He did have an old 2014 Chevy Cruze with over 130,000 miles when the head gasket blew.
So we fixed that and sold it.
It had the 1.8l Turboed Ecotec.
Those were just known for having head gasket problems.
Because they didn't use enough head bolts.
So the head gasket was weak.
1.8 Turbo?
Yes.
Still not sure about the 1.8 Turbo part iirc
Look up the specs for that model.
It only shows a 1.8 non-Turbo
I'm also not aware of a GM 1.8 Turbo
It was slow though.
Going from 138 HP to 155 makes a difference in a car that small.
That's why you have to remap it
Our Meriva has the same engine but detuned (120hp, A14NEL), tuned to 170hp.
Also the lag is a lot better on the 2017.
Turbo lag is good, those are the real turbos xD
It still is kinda annoying when you step on the gas and it doesn't go anywhere until the turbo spools up.
Then you spin the tires and still don't go anywhere.
I'm used to having no power, so having a turbo kicking in is better xD
I guess that's true.
Imagine having a 1.2 Ecotec without turbo
I drive a 600 HP Duramax, so my Dad's car feels super slow.
It's a 2005 3500 with the LBZ duramax along with the Allison transmission.
The LBZ is known as the toughest Duramax made.
My Corsa can outpull it 10/10
In case you didn't know, that's a diesel engine.
Yeah i know xD
Lbsft or NM?
Oof
I forgot there are the wierd metric guys always wanting me to switch to them.
What engine does your Corsa have?
Propane and gas
I'm actually serious.
Yours might get me off the line.
Cause my truck never has traction when racing.
Yeah I believe ya, yours spins while mine instantly moves. Slow, but it moves xD
But when my tires hook up, I'll come blasting past you like a freight train.
I can switch to race fuel (gas), which increases the hp from 83 to 86 and the Nm from 110 to 115
There's advantages and disadvantages to owning a super powerful diesel.
π
Not bad
Yeah
Cya.
If you build a 600 HP Duramax, never expect the rear end to hold up.
The first time I launched it, it completely tore up the rear end.
Just in case you ever build a 600 HP Duramax @stoic ledge
I was just about to Duramax swap the Corsa
Sometimes I have my moments but just in this moment, I think this is beautiful.
audi has been experimenting with electric vehicles for a while
volkswagen group has lots of experience in WEC, and in formula E
over here are a few electric a3 driving around
since like... 2016 π€
but yes etron sounds stupid π
i think a a3 sized fully electric audi based on the id3 platform would be cool π€
It really gets weird when you see BMW 3 series and 1 series with an E badge in the number plate.
Well yeah, but did I miss the release of an electric 3 series? π€
Nevermind, getting me a shovel now.
they showed it at the same time when they presented their status in autonomous driving
but i think most of them are like the i3 with a good old gasoline motor added to the electric one
"Electric" A3's are plug-in's, like the Golf GTE etc. Not full BEV's.
Also, they started selling/building the E-Tron in 2018 π€
Also, Etron (E-Tron) is French for π© xD
I saw an E-Tron yesterday
meh suv
its a good car, and imo nice looking, but its just too short of range & lacking a charging network in the US
I'd only get a tesla in the US, since theyre the ones with a reliable charging network
I'd get anything but a tesla because i don't really trust in the repairing process, but then again most fully electric vehicles arr huge or.. a smart
Model 3 is small, wym?
but thats tesla then again π€·
true
the svc centers are super overworked in cali and stuff, not too bad up here
theyre improving, and the 3 is proving MUCH more reliable than the S or X
europe xd
ah, idk how it is over there in terms of service centers.
Better than the US I imagine.
idk, Bjorn has had loads of problems in norway
Remember Tesla can't sell in half the states in the US due to dealer strangleholds on local governments.
After all remember. Local dealers have been paying for little league teams since 1792.
lol
Who will fund them if they go away?! (besides parents now having enough money to do it themselves now that dealers aren't screwing us out of every dollar. :3c)
in PNW there's quite a few teslas, but there doesn't seem to be lots of crowding at superchargers or svc centers or anything
Hopefully VW and Ford releasing EVs will push the US forward.
Then again I don't expect VW to release any EVs and I expect Ford dealers to take the boomer approach to the Mach E.
Dealers really need to go away.
most of their cars are focused on Europe so far
Time to stop getting fucked by the middle man.
yeah
big markups
there was a dealer near me that had one of the new Supras, they put it in a glass case and charged people to look at it π
obviously it didn't sell
they wanted something like 90k for it
"Supra don't sell because people don't wanna buy it"
Not for a 100% markup plus fees to test drive the fucker.
yeah
Remember. Like Gamers, Dealerships are the most oppressed people on the planet.
hashtag popcult memes
working with dealers is always a huge pain in the ass
Incredible pain.
when we were buying our explorer, we looked at a '16 sport at a dealer but they kept adding all kinds of bullshit "required fees"
so we walked out
Which is why I'm happy to say that I made the sales manager lose his shit.
the car was listed at 32... by the time they finished tacking shit on and stuff, it was 41.
So yeah.
Dealers are a pain.
"hey guys, can to you take toyota care off as an option"
"no we can't it's already installed"
"I... wait how do you irreversibly tack on a service!?"
80 dollar phone cables included in a little baggie NOT JB welded to the car?
Can't take it out.
yeah, its dumb.
wow gg guys
You waxed my car and scotchguarded the seats.
Totally worth 700 dollars.
700$???!
It does include 2 oil changes, 4 tire rotations, and assistance in case my car ever breaks. Knocking on wood, but I DID buy a Toyota.
hold on.
yeah
wow
699 dollars cause I'm sure the dealer would get pissy
Which is why I almost trolled em down to 23.5
I should have said 23k.
Still I got my car at MSRP without any options... So I got my car with a 2000 dollar discount about.
nice
And, keep this to yourself buuuutttttt, I told em I was going to recommend them.
That was a lie.
Local Nissan dealership was apparently way more aggressive in winning over a customer. It seems both Toyota and Honda rolling on rep, and have partially given up on treating customers like actual people.
Oh I'm well aware, also I haven't forgotten the dealer could have treated me better.
I'd still never buy a Nissan. Except for a 300ZX
Honestly if I was shopping for a new car right now and I wanted an automatic.
I'd include Nissan.
Everyone apart from Honda have brand new compacts on the market.
Honda recently refreshed the Civic. Now is a great time to see what is what if you want cutting edge.
'Nissan' and 'cutting edge' don't really go together
why not
They have some excellent safety tech right now. Competitive platforms and engines.
They just need to kill the pathfinder and release a new Rogue and they'll be back in business.
New Sentra actually looks good, and has a modern suspension setup... unlike Mazda.
their cvts are nightmareishly bad
That's why you get the manual ;)
have anyone here tested a car with ABS but without brakebooster (having either single or dual master cylinder only) and the ABS kicked in, how is the pedal responding? (punching back) is it much as in breaking your leg or just somewhat more than with brakebooster? want to get rid of my brakebooster for more direct pedal feel
or just dont buy a nissan
@dense shard We don't get any of the cars you mentioned
Honestly I don't get the hate against Nissan.
Their CVTs, besides not being the most durable, are totally fine in daily driving.
My parents' Rogue doesn't pretend to have gears. It just gets up and goes.
Also a used Boxster is gonna probably need 5 grand in repairs and is a 2 door.
It's not hate, it's them not being particularly innovative or outstanding
And a teens M5 is honestly just begging to hire a mechanic full time.
ProPilot 2.0 is pretty outstanding is the thing.
Not sure how one becomes innovative at a budget, but their styling has improved with the updated models.
They're generally just meh at best
But hey. If Mazda can call a twist beam rear suspension an innovation, I think we can call Nissan's dual port injection a wild departure from all automotive norms.
Over here most Nissans are just Renaults with a different design
If it works, it works.
That doesn't change anything about them though
I'm just not sure what other automakers have on Nissan that makes Nissan so meh.
They don't really stand out in anything
Budget cars.
Not really
they have a dreadful interior, poor performance, while costing as much as their vastly better competition
My parents got a Rogue for far less than a RAV4.
Interior isn't that horrible.
And the fuel economy is pretty damn great.
The new Sentra, Versa are actually quite nice on the inside.
Over here the only 'budget' cars they sell are the Micra and the Juke
Certainly no worse than say... a Yaris or Sonic.
Isn't your Yaris actually a Mazda 2
But not as good as a Corsa
Runs
I'd take a Yaris over a Micra any day
A base Maxima costs more than a base Stinger, and is only marginally cheaper than the 3.3T Stinger... The Stinger has a nicer interior, better performance and dynamics, imo better looks, and a better warranty
also the Stinger is rwd/awd
I'd take a Mazda 2 over a Yaris/Micra/... Anyday xD
and has a real, ZF 8HP trans instead of a CVT
The Mazda 2 is getting on in age in the US.
@stoic ledge They're kinda expensive though unfortunately
Yesn't
That's a Mazda with a weird front xD
Also the styling seriously doesn't line up with the rest of Toyota.
Because it isn't a Toyota
Toyota should have gone through the effort to federalize the Yaris.
Or just stop selling it in the US.
Looks like a Toyota at least.
I need to call Toyota and find out if they actually have people listening in on me.
But all cars in this segment is now a 5d, so I can't fit in one so /care xD
Haha
oh no Android Auto is too nosy
We're doing enough to be nosy.
Although the GRMN version will probably be 3 door π
I really hope the 3-door isn't going anytime soon
You may deactivate Connected Services at any time by contacting us; and we will no longer collect your Personal Information, Location Data, Driving Data and Vehicle Health Data.
Can I just opt out of the personal information harvesting?
and location data?
Oof a baser model with smaller wheels is ugly af
https://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/crop/201910/toyota-yaris-36_800x0w.jpg
I should contact my local congresscritter and tell them to make a law where companies are legally required to explain etc.
such as your name, address, phone number, email address, etc.
What the fuck else do ya need?!
I think it looks alright but bigger wheels do look better on it
It will also deactivate all connected services i assume
Yes
And crash assist.
I'll turn it all off when the subscription lapses.
if you want the honor of unlocking your car from your phone, you must give us money... 8 dollars, A MONTH.
Classic
That's separate from safety connect which is 10 a month.
No thnx, I'll press a button
I'd rather be old-fashioned and use a key
I can use a key just fine.
Don't try to fix something that isn't broken
But I'm very annoyed by nickel and diming after I paid well north of 20k.
There is no point in them asking that much for a stupid service like that
Probably the car needs an LTE subscription plan which is otherwise deactivated?
It's a nifty feature, just not one I'm prepared to pay that much for.
Idk
My car has a wifi hotspot, but I haven't enabled it.
It has LTE via Verizon... thanks for the choice, not
Wifi built in.
Bluetooth is actually useful tho. For that I'm happy.
@stoic ledge If it does, it should be way cheaper than that
But at this point. All these features are standard on all new cars.
I won't lol
Oh btw, damage to my parents car is 1k
No bumper can be fixed, but also the trunklid needs te be dented out and repainted
Oh was that dented too?
I checked it in our chat

Yes
Going to ask the other people, what their assessment is
Police called me today, and asked for the estimate so they can present it in court
Looks like they have him or not, idk
He didn't tell me that
Yeah not quite sure, but that's what the officer said to me that they need it in court
Finally had time to wash "Il Diavolo Rosso"
Basically a Ferrari
It's red, it's Italian... What else do you want?
Ferraris are just expensive Fiats anyway so whatever
I like those Puntos
Same
Damn, I need to import a Punto now
If you migrate to the US, you can take it with you but you can't sell it
That's what I heard anyway
Yes haha
I mean, you'd be the only one at cars & coffee
No dude, authentic is worth way more
And it's running on 2 fuels
How many cars at cars & coffee have 2 different types of fuel in them? Not many
xD
Hmm
Hmm
Didn't you guys hear the news? PSA and Fiat are joining forces
Didn't you hear me saying that 2 week ago? xD
I wonder when they put a Ferrari engine in the viper
X doubt
Or they'll make a Peugeot branded ram
RAM ProMaster (City) maybe
FAP == best engine name
Oof
I think Banks got the 2018 ram engine to like 600+ bhp w/o swapping a thing
Now I'm just tryna figure out a good Peugeot or Citroen lul can't come up with any
Peugeot 108 Hemi
Lmao
PSA can re-enter the US market via FCA
Ordering a RAM 3500 for the husband, and a 1.0 Peugeot 108 for the wife xD
Or even lower prices
Basically :p
I usually see it as they don't actually just greed their way into everything
But like you'll swap something for something else
Like knee airbag for rear boot handle and stuff like that
Well yeah sharing parts is cheap
Why develop something the same slightly different twice? xD
That's how Saab died: redeveloping sat-navs from the ground up while GM had plenty of units to choose from xD
Ok so I was just checking out the Chrysler line-up... They added the Voyager back again, besides the Pacifica? I thought the Pacifica replaced the Voyager?
Wait they made another mini van?
Oof
The Pacifica is something completely different though
Chrysler is in denial. The fact they're marketing the Pacifica hybrid as a model, and not a trim is pretty much all the evidence needed.
Oof I see, they differentiate Voyager, Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid. 3/4 of their line-up is 1 car
Ok this web page design definitely doesn't look like Tesla
Close enough
I was living under a rock that i didn't know that Mr bean used to own a McLaren f1 with a v12 BMW engine
That's legendary
Poor thing :/
Oh yeah
It's fix right ?
Elon totalled one
I hope the new owner knows what that car is
I thought Jay Leno's garage was the guy that kept his black McLaren F1 but other people I know surprised me that they used to own one
Sweet
It's funny that Richard Hammond didn't crash the red McLaren F1 in top gear
Jk
who was it that crashed the Rimac?
Richard
Yes
https://static.autoblog.nl/images/wp2015/atkinson-f1.jpg
Look at him. What a badass
That color is underrated in my life time
It's so strange and special
Yeah I quite like it
Well that isn't that bad to fix but only problem is it cost more then a house
Close to 1 milion iirc
Yes
It got both a new front and back once
So basically it's 100% not as it left the factory
Everything got replaced
In 1999, he damaged the hood by driving it into the back of a Rover Metro, as one does in England. Then in 2011 Atkinson crashed the car into a tree and a road sign, resulting in an infamous and insurance company-infuriatingΒ $1.4 million repair bill.
Veyron is just a VW Beetle with 24 engines combined
2005 i think
Yeah the prototype started way earlier
I see
I heard it had 18 cylinders in that production vehicle lol
I'm not sure if I'm hearing that right
Just imagine fixing the timing belt and crankshaft
Ultra nightmare
In the first couple of prototypes
A 3 bank 18 cyl engine
Production models gor a W16, a 4 bank 16 cyl engine
EB 16 4, 16 cyl 4 turbo's
11 radiators iirc
10 radiators, sorry xD
On top speed It's 100L fuel tank is empty within 10 minutes iirc
Damn
It's amazing how it drives like a gentle car but has crazy numbers of power behind you in the driver seat
Until you floor it and it's personality changes
Yeah they did that well
At top speed, tires will burst after 15 minutes btw
But since it will run out of fuel after 12 minutes, you don't have to worry xD
So extended fuel tanks aren't an option.
Lol nope

Also quite sure there isn't any room for a bigger tank xD
Luckily tires are only 50k a set
Yeah
My great grandfather and mother used to own one 1932 or 1921 Bugatti type something
They give it to there young trusted friend because my great grandparents are dying to there age so yeah
I'm sure the car is still there just don't know that person
Oof RIP
They hand to that person with no charge because they won't live much longer with the money they got
So it was nice of them
Usually they give stuff like that to their kids, no?
Lmao
It's hard to believe that my great grandfather worked on big Ben during the great depression and moved to USA to help the people
It's strange that your older people do special things
Welp gotta go back to work I had fun talking on here lol
So that's what Toyota calls the spare tire removal option on the Corolla hatch.
"Cargo Enhancement "
so happy to have this car! π only wanted a lexus for 20+ years
I'll have to bug the Toyota guys when I get my service done soon.
Ask them about android auto.
meh, at least bluetooth is legit.
~reliable~
Better than the Mitsu 4G63
See crank, see crank walk. Walk crank, walk!
Android Auto has been crap since day 1
New bumper came in! Lets get it!
lol doing driftos
This environmentally friendly diesel soots alot more than normal π€
Who says that's from your own engine?
It's just on the rear face of the car :p
It does X)
Actually they're not that bad, they use way less fuel
They're just very cancerogenic
use way less fuel
nice blanket statement
riced pickups would like to challenge it
Well > riced pickups
I mean, here in Europe we have many eco-diesels which in many countries got tax credits a couple of years ago
With those you could reach 50-60MPG
So yes, use less fuel
@civic girder your car uses way less fuel and way more oil
I'm just going with the meme
in actuality its more like 1000 miles per quart of motor oil
2 stroke is probably somewhere in the same ballpark
My 6.0l gets 15 MPG on the highway.
It uses no oil.
I change it exactly at 5,000 miles.
at least my RX-7 gets like 20 on the highway
I've been driving my parents explorer and getting an average of.... 16 mpg!
xD
got 18 on a highway drive tho
I live in America too, only have a 18.something gallon tank though iirc
gas is 2.70 here
It depends for me.
costco is the best place to get gas
In 2012 it wad close to $4.00 a gallon.
yeah
Costco and GetGo are the cheapest.
At one point during the 2012 spike in gas, Diesel crested 5$
Now it's down to around $2.00 a gallon.
thankfully it aint that expensive anymore
I'm getting about 25mpg per tank in city/hilly driving.
I was talking to FalconHand
We're going to dig into my RX tomorrow. See what we can do.
Still haven't gone at it?
I was driving my parents 2014 Explorer Sport, since my '99 RX300 is broken
Hopefully it can be made right.
sounds like rod knock, but its intermittent so Ive got zero clue
rod knock can't be intermittent
I'ma be lazy and just cut and paste a help post from another discord. one sec.
Does it have a timing chain or a belt?
belt
Anyways, the other night I was driving my 1999 Lexus RX300, and came to a stop at a stop sign and the car started bucking and running weird. I pulled off into a parking spot, and it sounded for all the world like rod knock. I immediately turned it off (intuitively), and called my dad to come take a look. He came, we started it, and the noise persisted. We ran it for a minute and asked someone else, and we all agreed it sounded like rod knock. Then, we gave it just a tiny bit of revs (well under 2k) and it quieted down a bit. We carefully drove the car home, and it made it without major issue. I took it for a short drive last night, and it intermittently knocked/rattled. It can't be rod knock, as that can't be intermittent. Any suggestions? I have a video link of it doing it briefly in the past.
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbdJLvVHtig
thats an old video but it sounded similar
My money's on electrics.
ye, np. That video was about 6 months ago, and a few thousand miles.
I'm in a public space without headphones.
Bad plug/coil/wire/or something.
Came back the other night
Okay.
different circumstances though
nah
first time it had been sitting for a few days, barely was able to start. battery was fine, but it was super unhappy. Made that noise, then faded after a couple minutes.
in the video
Engine mount doesn't make that sound.
this time, I had been driving the car a bunch
then stopped for a few minutes, started it again, drove aobut two miles, and came to a stop at a stop sign
Listening to it now. It sounds like some nasty ass lifter tick.
They get loose and sound like a knocking a sound.
the car started bucking and running rough, so i pulled into a parking spot
Okay.
it sounded like rod knocking, and so I turned it off and called my dad
20ish mins later, he came and i turned it back on and it persisted
I've had a mount go out on me. It didn't sound anything like that video.
until we revved it just a tiny bit and it quieted down
we carefully drove it home amd it seemed to do okay
Pretty sure the RX300 is a dual cam engine.
my grandpa said it oculd be a sticking valve
Yeah.
It honestly sounds like a valve.
but he just heard it over the phone lol
Failing that bad plug.
Probably a valve issue.
Take it apart and report what you find.
Make sure to ping me.
the one in the back is a PITA lol
And maybe the timing cover.
needs to be replaced regardless though
gasket is leaky a bit, but i did NOT run it out/low on oil
not even close
sludge?
Wait, I've never heard of a rear valve cover.
transverse v6
It's a tran-yeah
Oh.
Take both covers off.
And look at it.
And see if there's anything that doesn't look correct.
alright
Dunno if you'll see anything.
How many miles does it have?
133k
Has the belt been replaced before?
yes
The timing belt. Not the drive belt.
At what mileage?
around 90k, a few years ago
Okay.
lexus says to do it around 90k
You're good for that.
then again at 180 etc
So, tear into it and see if there's anything out of the ordinary.
Again at 270k, but the fourth time is at 300k, because the Lexus guys don't have enough fingers between em to count that high.
It's why service costs are so high. They need a lot of people.
hopefully the engine isn't f*cked
figure it should be important to mention
no CEL, no codes, etc
Strange
It only really enforces the non-fucked theory.
It does kinda sound like a valve though
yeah, we'll see tomorrow when we dig into it and try and come to some conclusion
cause its gonna be a bit of a mess if I don't have a car to drive when school starts back up
It ain't rod knock.
yeah, cause rod knock can't be intermittent
Among other things.
like a tensioner wearing out?
Yea
That would cause knocking?
Rattling
it was almost exactly 6 months in between the two occurrences
That would throw a code as well I imagine.
so I doubt its a tensioner
We're talking about the accessories belt, right?
Not necessarily
in between those times it ran fine
He'd lose alternator and water pump likely. That would throw a code.
And I imagine lots of belt squeal.
yeah electrics have been fine aside from when my idiot brother left the door cracked open and the door light stayed on and killed the battery lol
Just the tensioner going bad wouldn't mean anything would stop working though
It could just be a bearing on a tensioner for example
It would still work but make a rattling noise like that
oh, so the tensioner is still doing it's job, just not quite spinning like it should.
Exactly
That's a theory. And you could 100% place that noise.
Mhm
can't see the timing belt without taking a whole bunch of stuff off
nah, you can listen for it.
ill add that to the list of things to check tomorrow
Hopefully it won't be too bad for you
A valve tick vs. tensioner will be obvious where it's coming from.
I'll get a video of it running tomorrow if its not making the big noise
Put your ear close to it.
its always ticked a bit, but thats fuel injectors firing or something according to lexus forums
If it doesn't misfire it can't be a valve issue
oh boy weather is getting fucky.
https://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/topic/17621-rx300-ticking/
Regarding the normal, quiet ticking
valve covers need to come off anyways, so we can take a look underneath
Engine still seems to run smoothly though
usually it does
wasn't running smoothly at the stop sign though lol
RPMs were all over the place, car shaking and bucking etc.
until I was actually stopped I thought it was just my warped rotors
lol
Maybe it's just haunted
lol
Now I'm not too sure about the tensioner theory either
Can't really hear where the sound is coming from
the more recent time it sounded like it was coming from the bottom left/center of the engine
but sound bounces around so idk
In this post the tensioner was at fault indeed
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-1st-gen-1999-2003/589050-loud-engine-knock.html
Could be improperly installed.
Not impossible
we'll take a look
Took our scan tool out and scanned it, saw nothing. Let it idle for a bit, nothing out of the ordinary. So I took it for a 10 mile drive, starting out careful and it was fine so I got into it and nothing seemed amiss
wtf car
worked fine, power seemed typical (that is to say, slow as hell)
Cursed
sure seems like it
only issues i noted was a bit of burning oil (from vcg we think, not huge deal, planned to fix soon), and my leaky exhaust flex pipe
which both are known entities/problems
lmaooo
Lmao
Speaking of BP, I was filling up the car there, and then we lost powe
Power*
Doo my eyes spy an FC
lmao
It still bothers me that Retro reviews recommended the 944 over the GSL-SE
even though the GSL-SE was actually faster in a straight line
and was like $10k cheaper and only like 1 second slower on the track
lmao
And far more durable, reliable, cheaper, and easier to repair.
Remember the 944 had a rear transaxle with a torque tube. Wanna replace the clutch. lol get a new car.
It is, but you have to drop half the drive train out iirc.
isn't that how every car is? Trans has to come out?
And the torque tube which runs the length of the car.
I assume that's not at the bottom but like mixed in with a lot of shit?
the trans isn't "half the drive train"
Transmission AND torque tube
The big metal tube connecting the engine to the transmission.
It's also hilarious to see someone say that the Porsche is more reliable than the RX-7
jesus fuck
oh yikes
and the 944 is front engine too, wtf
oh god why
Great weight distribution, but frankly... the 944 was never fast enough to need 50/50 balance.
transaxle sounds like more pain than its worth
It's an exotic feature for exotic cars.
The 944 was the everyman's' exotic, but with the pains associated with exotics.
944 was never fast enough to need 50/50
Yea, you know you're slow when a bone stock RX-7 FB is faster in a straight line
The 944 was tragically slow even in the 80s.
It needed two iterations of a turbo engine to make it competitive.
The 944 was probably slower on the track too, they were just paid to say it was faster than the RX-7
I've stopped driving my car in normal mode π
It's so reluctant to shift it's a bit dangerous
Or the RX-7 had bad seals and was running bad.
maybe, lmao
Or maybe the 944 had a tune.
it blew out the apex seals at the end of the drag race π
Or maybe the driver got lucky. Frankly 1 second either way for amateurs is nothing.
you're still gonna recommend people buy the more expensive car because it was 1 sec faster on the track?
like, bruh
I was going up hill today and literally nearly pushing the pedal to the floor and nope. no 2nd gear for me.
As soon as i flipped the switch to power mode, it went right in and was fine
for 1 sec difference, I'd rather buy the cheaper car and use the money I save to make it faster than the more expensive car
so yeah screw normal mode
For 10 grand you can buy a Miata and go faster that way. lol
lol
π€ no seriously... You have an RX-7 Cars and Coffee machine, and a track day Miata.
There's someone around here with a 944. I've seen it a couple times
You'll probably still save on upkeep.
Yea.
lol
If I was going to get a track car, it would be something pathetically cheap
probably not even a Miata, tbh
something so cheap that if it got a dent I could just say "fuck it, time to get a new car"
Then again I don't think anyone who listens to funky town would even consider a 944...
here's an unpopular opinion, i find the NA miata to be heinously ugly
lmao
I think the 944 looks ok, but like, everything else is atrociously bad
I much prefer the NB for styling.
agreed
Still cute, but much more mature.
it looks a bit more... finished
NA looks like they were rushed to get something out
I like all the Miatas. NA and ND are my favs, NA because pop up bias, ND because I think it pulls off the modern aggression styling
NB and NC are good too ofc
NC def the ugliest tho
Ironically tho, I've never driven an NA or ND
but I've drive both NB and NC
NA is fun.
Miatas are hella fun to drive, but are super tiny
I didn't say the NC was ugly, just the worst looking of all the Miatas
NC stands for Notoriously Chungus.
fuck
Lol
Like, if I were to get a Miata, I'd probably get an NC just because they're the biggest
if I was presented with a Genesis G70 and a Model 3 dual motor for the same price idk what I'd pick.............
I can barely drive an NB because the pedals are too close together
I know what you should pick
My RX-7 because it combines smol car with big comfy interior
I'd get the NB. I just happen to like the styling the most.
A Toyota Corolla
I'd race one, ngl
Already got a Corolla.
the new corolla is actually cool
they're cheap af and you can do a lot with them
wish it had way more power though
nah, 170 is plenty.
its 12 seconds to 60 isnt it?
Makes as much power as a Corvette in 1984.
What's power
7ish seconds to 60 for the 2.0.
o
cries in lack of torque
that's not too terrible
Closer to 10 with the last gen.
I have two 100 hp cars, anything more than 130hp is a lot for me
I have 220 but I bet your prius is quicker in practice
The 'rolla is an upgrade from the 60 I had.
I drove a 550 hp M4 π€
even the RX-7 is faster, despite less torque and power
when the car was brand new, if my car was absolutely floored, and actually cooperating, it could hit 8.8s
the main difference is in the drivetrain
to 60
the Prius has the most limiting drivetrain of all time
but 20 years later, some horses have escaped and flooring it makes it not work well
so
I bet the prius is just as quick
if not quicker
Floor it, and it takes a solid two seconds for the engine to rev
Neutral drop it
if I just cane it from a stop, it doesn't seem to engage properly
if I start out then give it more, it works fine.
if you floor the Prius in neutral it only revs to like 2k rpm and stays there
wow
it hates revving in neutral
wow really?
yea
boring
weird
the computer limits it
i found out the 99 RX has a higher redline than any of the others
which i found weird
https://youtu.be/kj-PwIjOlSE neutral drop
Wow folks! 5 speed clutch dumping beat down! Honda Civic was hard to kill!
though it always shifts before 6k, even near floored
lol
which is fine
I almost had it all the way down today, and it only made it to 5300 rpm
The Prius engine can rev to like 6k, but the computer limits it to like 5k
yeah thats how mine does
If you floor it, the CVT will hold the Prius at 5k
But it works.
Tell that to Nissan
LMAO
Right after I tell Honda about reliable manual and automatics.
And Ford about their slushbox.
I asked my friend who works at a dealership how often they get someone coming in for CVT replacements in their Nissan.
He said: "I don't work in the repair shop, but I can tell you I see one on the shipping invoices every now and then"
I'd take a cvt over my 4spd slushbox
Toyota hybrids with CVTs are pretty good. They are unfun cars, but hella reliable and get great economy
Remember the early 2000s Hondas had glass transmissions as well.
if I'm flooring it on a hill, I want the car to fucking shift. I don't want to go flipping switches to change trans profiles and have it slam into second.
I'm not gonna judge Nissan anymore harshly than I judge Honda.
WRX 5 speeds blowup at stock power
like, even when I rear ended an SUV and fucked the Prius' radiator, it wasn't leaking and I still made it the 45 minute drive home
Honda 6 speed manuals had a bum 3rd gear synchro out the factory.
thats why it was fun driving my mom's explorer, a decent 6 speed and 365hp makes for decent performance
Who needs synchros
^
Double clutch that shit in
double clutch is fun
Problem is the rest of the transmission would get fucked along with it.
I've driven a car without synchros before
And Honda refused to act on it for 5-6 years.
Eh, you win some, you lose some
This wasn't an issue fixed until the late 00s.
not sure the actual model designation, but both cars have a 6 speed
its actually pretty damn good
(he has the hybrid)
not a PDK or 8HP, but decent
I have a 4 speed, do I win
same
I have a CVT and a 5 speed
Honestly... safest bet remains manual.
I use race mode all the time
it's hard to fuck up a manual unless you try
It's hard to fuck up the simplicity of a classic manual transmission.
I wish the Giulia wasn't so horribly unreliable
manual swap it
My dad looks at me weird when I shift from 5th to R(ace)
Then again modern transmissions are by and large pretty great.
DCTs are unreliable as fuck
I love the shift paddles on the Giulia
don't blame me xD
