"You have been found guilty of driving while under the influence, do you have anything to say?"

#

"Well... I've never been much of a mobile gamer, but, forget..."

stoic ledge
#

The ecotecs had tons of timing chain issues.

Step 1) Make sure the oil is at max
Step 2) Keep it there

If oil at max -> nothing will happen
If oil under 1/2 -> corner fast, chain can run dry and stretch

normal temple
#

@stoic ledge Over max so you have extra leftover

civic spoke
#

I'm happy that my E46 isn't burning oil.

fathom socket
#

BMW's are known to burn oil.

#

I kinda surprised.

civic spoke
#

Driven like 10,000 km's without noticing any oil loss.

#

Since the last oil change, that is.

fathom socket
#

@stoic ledge It wasn't just the timing chain, it was all the tensioners as well as the cam phasers that were known to break.

And, it's important that you change the oil a 3,000 miles instead of what computer tells you. There was actually a recall on some of the Ecotecs stating that the oil be changed early. But it goes for all of them, change the oil every 3,000 miles, and it'll last you till 200,000 miles.

#

I know very little about the 2016-present Ecotecs though. My Dad has a 2017 Chevy Cruze 1.4l Ecotec, it has almost 60,000 miles on it. And it's never had any issues besides the throttle position sensor on the gas pedal which was replaced under warranty. And I don't know if you would count the radiator and the turbo, because they were replaced after an accident.

stoic ledge
#

Those are European Ecotecs by Opel, those are good Pogey

fathom socket
#

I know the transmission on my Dad's car isn't the strongest though.

#

When he first got it, the tranny would slip all the time.

#

Now it seems to be okay.

#

He did have an old 2014 Chevy Cruze with over 130,000 miles when the head gasket blew.

#

So we fixed that and sold it.

#

It had the 1.8l Turboed Ecotec.

#

Those were just known for having head gasket problems.

#

Because they didn't use enough head bolts.

#

So the head gasket was weak.

stoic ledge
#

1.8 Turbo?

fathom socket
#

Yes.

stoic ledge
#

πŸ€”

#

In a Cruze?

fathom socket
#

Yep.

#

His new one has a 1.4 turbo that makes more power.

#

I think it's 160 HP.

stoic ledge
#

Still not sure about the 1.8 Turbo part iirc

fathom socket
#

Versus the 1.8 made 148.

#

It's a turbo.

#

Trust me.

stoic ledge
#

πŸ€”

#

πŸ€”

fathom socket
#

Look up the specs for that model.

stoic ledge
#

It only shows a 1.8 non-Turbo

fathom socket
#

It had the worst turbo lag ever.

#

That's wierd

stoic ledge
#

I'm also not aware of a GM 1.8 Turbo

fathom socket
#

Sorry.

#

It had an older version of the 1.4 turbo.

stoic ledge
#

Oof

#

A14NET

fathom socket
#

It was slow though.

#

Going from 138 HP to 155 makes a difference in a car that small.

stoic ledge
#

That's why you have to remap it Pogey Our Meriva has the same engine but detuned (120hp, A14NEL), tuned to 170hp.Pogey

fathom socket
#

Also the lag is a lot better on the 2017.

stoic ledge
#

Turbo lag is good, those are the real turbos xD

fathom socket
#

It still is kinda annoying when you step on the gas and it doesn't go anywhere until the turbo spools up.

#

Then you spin the tires and still don't go anywhere.

stoic ledge
#

I'm used to having no power, so having a turbo kicking in is better xD

fathom socket
#

I guess that's true.

stoic ledge
#

Imagine having a 1.2 Ecotec without turbo Pogey

fathom socket
#

I drive a 600 HP Duramax, so my Dad's car feels super slow.

#

It's a 2005 3500 with the LBZ duramax along with the Allison transmission.

#

The LBZ is known as the toughest Duramax made.

stoic ledge
#

My Corsa can outpull it 10/10

fathom socket
#

In case you didn't know, that's a diesel engine.

stoic ledge
#

Yeah i know xD

fathom socket
#

I haven't told you the torque it makes yet.

#

It made 1197 on the torque.

stoic ledge
#

Lbsft or NM?

fathom socket
#

LBsft.

#

Sorry.

stoic ledge
#

Oof

fathom socket
#

I forgot there are the wierd metric guys always wanting me to switch to them.

#

What engine does your Corsa have?

stoic ledge
#

1.2 Ecotec

#

No Turbo

#

83hp

#

110Nm

#

Massive power

#

Running on 2 different fuels

fathom socket
#

Wow.

#

Yeah.

stoic ledge
#

Propane and gas

fathom socket
#

It'd get my truck off the line.

#

πŸ˜›

stoic ledge
#

Yes Pogey

#

0-60mph in ~14 seconds

#

What a beast

fathom socket
#

It might actually.

#

Because I sit there spinning most of the time.

stoic ledge
#

Lol mine has never

#

Because it has 0 power

#

xD

fathom socket
#

I'm actually serious.

#

Yours might get me off the line.

#

Cause my truck never has traction when racing.

stoic ledge
#

Yeah I believe ya, yours spins while mine instantly moves. Slow, but it moves xD

fathom socket
#

But when my tires hook up, I'll come blasting past you like a freight train.

stoic ledge
#

I can switch to race fuel (gas), which increases the hp from 83 to 86 and the Nm from 110 to 115

fathom socket
#

There's advantages and disadvantages to owning a super powerful diesel.

stoic ledge
#

πŸ™ƒ

fathom socket
#

Not bad

stoic ledge
#

Advantage: powerrrrrrrrr

#

Anyway, gotta go back to work

#

Cya

fathom socket
#

Yeah

#

Cya.

#

If you build a 600 HP Duramax, never expect the rear end to hold up.

#

The first time I launched it, it completely tore up the rear end.

fair bronze
#

Just in case you ever build a 600 HP Duramax @stoic ledge

stoic ledge
#

I was just about to Duramax swap the Corsa Pogey

fathom socket
#

I dare you to do that.

#

Cause the engine will totally fit in it.

volkswagen group has lots of experience in WEC, and in formula E

bitter compass

over here are a few electric a3 driving around

but yes etron sounds stupid πŸ‘€

#

i think a a3 sized fully electric audi based on the id3 platform would be cool πŸ€”

crimson wraith

It really gets weird when you see BMW 3 series and 1 series with an E badge in the number plate.

hmm

they drive around like golfs in munich xddd

crimson wraith

Well yeah, but did I miss the release of an electric 3 series? πŸ€”

they.. showed it...

#

but never really announced everywhere

crimson wraith
#

Nevermind, getting me a shovel now.

bitter compass
#

they showed it at the same time when they presented their status in autonomous driving

#

but i think most of them are like the i3 with a good old gasoline motor added to the electric one

stoic ledge
#

"Electric" A3's are plug-in's, like the Golf GTE etc. Not full BEV's.

Also, they started selling/building the E-Tron in 2018 πŸ€”

Also, Etron (E-Tron) is French for πŸ’© xD

dense shard

mmmmmmm compliance EVs

Also MK might want to fix your like on the Golf GTE.

I saw an E-Tron yesterday

its a good car, and imo nice looking, but its just too short of range & lacking a charging network in the US

I'd only get a tesla in the US, since theyre the ones with a reliable charging network

I'd get anything but a tesla because i don't really trust in the repairing process, but then again most fully electric vehicles arr huge or.. a smart

bitter compass

indigo coral
#

ah, idk how it is over there in terms of service centers.

dense shard
#

Better than the US I imagine.

indigo coral
#

idk, Bjorn has had loads of problems in norway

dense shard
#

Remember Tesla can't sell in half the states in the US due to dealer strangleholds on local governments.

indigo coral
#

not half

#

there's still a few though

dense shard
#

After all remember. Local dealers have been paying for little league teams since 1792.

indigo coral
#

lol

dense shard
#

Who will fund them if they go away?! (besides parents now having enough money to do it themselves now that dealers aren't screwing us out of every dollar. :3c)

indigo coral
#

in PNW there's quite a few teslas, but there doesn't seem to be lots of crowding at superchargers or svc centers or anything

dense shard
#

Hopefully VW and Ford releasing EVs will push the US forward.

indigo coral
#

hopefully.

#

Mach E isn't going to sell though

dense shard
#

Then again I don't expect VW to release any EVs and I expect Ford dealers to take the boomer approach to the Mach E.

indigo coral
#

mhm

#

idk what vw is going to do over here

dense shard
#

Dealers really need to go away.

indigo coral
#

most of their cars are focused on Europe so far

dense shard
#

Time to stop getting fucked by the middle man.

indigo coral
#

yeah

#

big markups

#

there was a dealer near me that had one of the new Supras, they put it in a glass case and charged people to look at it πŸ˜‚

#

obviously it didn't sell

#

they wanted something like 90k for it

dense shard
#

"Supra don't sell because people don't wanna buy it"

#

Not for a 100% markup plus fees to test drive the fucker.

indigo coral
#

yeah

dense shard
#

Remember. Like Gamers, Dealerships are the most oppressed people on the planet.

#

hashtag popcult memes

indigo coral
#

working with dealers is always a huge pain in the ass

dense shard
#

Incredible pain.

indigo coral
#

when we were buying our explorer, we looked at a '16 sport at a dealer but they kept adding all kinds of bullshit "required fees"

#

so we walked out

dense shard
#

Which is why I'm happy to say that I made the sales manager lose his shit.

indigo coral
#

the car was listed at 32... by the time they finished tacking shit on and stuff, it was 41.

#

So yeah.

#

Dealers are a pain.

dense shard

"hey guys, can to you take toyota care off as an option"

#

"no we can't it's already installed"

#

"I... wait how do you irreversibly tack on a service!?"

#

80 dollar phone cables included in a little baggie NOT JB welded to the car?

#

Can't take it out.

indigo coral
#

yeah, its dumb.

dense shard
#

wow gg guys

#

You waxed my car and scotchguarded the seats.

#

Totally worth 700 dollars.

indigo coral
#

700$???!

dense shard
#

It does include 2 oil changes, 4 tire rotations, and assistance in case my car ever breaks. Knocking on wood, but I DID buy a Toyota.

#

hold on.

#

yeah

indigo coral
#

wow

dense shard
#

699 dollars cause I'm sure the dealer would get pissy

#

Which is why I almost trolled em down to 23.5

#

I should have said 23k.

#

Still I got my car at MSRP without any options... So I got my car with a 2000 dollar discount about.

indigo coral

Local Nissan dealership was apparently way more aggressive in winning over a customer. It seems both Toyota and Honda rolling on rep, and have partially given up on treating customers like actual people.

#

Oh I'm well aware, also I haven't forgotten the dealer could have treated me better.

indigo coral
#

I'd still never buy a Nissan. Except for a 300ZX

dense shard
#

Honestly if I was shopping for a new car right now and I wanted an automatic.

#

I'd include Nissan.

#

Everyone apart from Honda have brand new compacts on the market.

#

Honda recently refreshed the Civic. Now is a great time to see what is what if you want cutting edge.

fair bronze
#

'Nissan' and 'cutting edge' don't really go together

dense shard
#

why not

#

They have some excellent safety tech right now. Competitive platforms and engines.

#

They just need to kill the pathfinder and release a new Rogue and they'll be back in business.

#

New Sentra actually looks good, and has a modern suspension setup... unlike Mazda.

indigo coral
#

their cvts are nightmareishly bad

2013 M5 for 21000

fair bronze
#

@dense shard We don't get any of the cars you mentioned

dense shard
#

Honestly I don't get the hate against Nissan.

#

Their CVTs, besides not being the most durable, are totally fine in daily driving.

#

My parents' Rogue doesn't pretend to have gears. It just gets up and goes.

#

Also a used Boxster is gonna probably need 5 grand in repairs and is a 2 door.

fair bronze
#

It's not hate, it's them not being particularly innovative or outstanding

dense shard
#

And a teens M5 is honestly just begging to hire a mechanic full time.

#

ProPilot 2.0 is pretty outstanding is the thing.

#

Not sure how one becomes innovative at a budget, but their styling has improved with the updated models.

fair bronze
#

They're generally just meh at best

dense shard
#

But hey. If Mazda can call a twist beam rear suspension an innovation, I think we can call Nissan's dual port injection a wild departure from all automotive norms.

fair bronze
#

Over here most Nissans are just Renaults with a different design

dense shard
#

If it works, it works.

fair bronze
#

That doesn't change anything about them though

dense shard
#

I'm just not sure what other automakers have on Nissan that makes Nissan so meh.

fair bronze
#

They don't really stand out in anything

dense shard
#

Budget cars.

fair bronze
#

Not really

dense shard
#

Really.

#

In the US they're amongst the cheapest.

indigo coral
#

they have a dreadful interior, poor performance, while costing as much as their vastly better competition

dense shard
#

My parents got a Rogue for far less than a RAV4.

#

Interior isn't that horrible.

#

And the fuel economy is pretty damn great.

#

The new Sentra, Versa are actually quite nice on the inside.

fair bronze
#

Over here the only 'budget' cars they sell are the Micra and the Juke

dense shard
#

Certainly no worse than say... a Yaris or Sonic.

fair bronze
#

Isn't your Yaris actually a Mazda 2

stoic ledge
#

But not as good as a Corsa

Runs

dense shard
#

And, annoyingly, they offer android auto.

#

Something Toyota still struggles with.

fair bronze
#

I'd take a Yaris over a Micra any day

indigo coral
#

A base Maxima costs more than a base Stinger, and is only marginally cheaper than the 3.3T Stinger... The Stinger has a nicer interior, better performance and dynamics, imo better looks, and a better warranty

#

also the Stinger is rwd/awd

stoic ledge
#

I'd take a Mazda 2 over a Yaris/Micra/... Anyday xD

indigo coral
#

and has a real, ZF 8HP trans instead of a CVT

dense shard
#

The Mazda 2 is getting on in age in the US.

fair bronze
#

@stoic ledge They're kinda expensive though unfortunately

stoic ledge
#

True, even used

#

Mazda 2 in the US πŸ‘€

#

Or did you mean; Yaris

dense shard
#

same thing.

#

A new Yaris here is still a 5 year old car elsewhere.

stoic ledge
#

Yesn't

fair bronze
#

That is a Mazda 2

stoic ledge
#

That's a Mazda with a weird front xD

dense shard
#

Also the styling seriously doesn't line up with the rest of Toyota.

fair bronze
#

Because it isn't a Toyota

stoic ledge
#

The new Yaris we get in Europe

dense shard
#

Toyota should have gone through the effort to federalize the Yaris.

#

Or just stop selling it in the US.

stoic ledge
#

It doesn't look as dull as the previous Yaris, that's for sure

dense shard
#

Looks like a Toyota at least.

fair bronze
#

Nothing outstanding but decent

#

Honestly I prefer the new Corolla interior

dense shard
#

I need to call Toyota and find out if they actually have people listening in on me.

stoic ledge
#

But all cars in this segment is now a 5d, so I can't fit in one so /care xD

#

50k is a lot for an F1

fathom socket
#

It's fix right ?

indigo coral
#

Elon totalled one

fathom socket
#

I hope the new owner knows what that car is

#

I thought Jay Leno's garage was the guy that kept his black McLaren F1 but other people I know surprised me that they used to own one

stoic ledge
#

Ah, 41k miles

#

Same

#

But yes it got fixed

#

Sold it 4 years ago

fathom socket
#

Sweet

#

It's funny that Richard Hammond didn't crash the red McLaren F1 in top gear

#

Jk

stoic ledge
#

Loooool xD

#

Nor the Veyron

#

It's amazing

indigo coral
#

who was it that crashed the Rimac?

stoic ledge
#

Richard

indigo coral
#

Wasnt it him?

#

yea

stoic ledge
#

Yes

fathom socket
#

That color is underrated in my life time

fathom socket
#

It's so strange and special

stoic ledge
#

Yeah I quite like it

fathom socket
#

Well that isn't that bad to fix but only problem is it cost more then a house

fathom socket
#

Wtf

#

The back too

stoic ledge
#

Close to 1 milion iirc

#

Yes

#

It got both a new front and back once

#

So basically it's 100% not as it left the factory

#

Everything got replaced

#

In 1999, he damaged the hood by driving it into the back of a Rover Metro, as one does in England. Then in 2011 Atkinson crashed the car into a tree and a road sign, resulting in an infamous and insurance company-infuriatingΒ $1.4 million repair bill.

fathom socket
#

Cost more then a Bugatti Veyron bruh

#

When it was first released

stoic ledge
#

Veyron is just a VW Beetle with 24 engines combined

fathom socket
#

xD

#

Did the Veyron start production in 2006 or 2005 I don't remember

stoic ledge
#

2005 i think

fathom socket
#

But they did made a Veyron in the 1990s as a prototype

#

Gotcha

stoic ledge
#

Yeah the prototype started way earlier

fathom socket
#

I see

#

I heard it had 18 cylinders in that production vehicle lol

#

I'm not sure if I'm hearing that right

#

Just imagine fixing the timing belt and crankshaft

#

Ultra nightmare

stoic ledge
#

In the first couple of prototypes

#

A 3 bank 18 cyl engine

#

Production models gor a W16, a 4 bank 16 cyl engine

#

EB 16 4, 16 cyl 4 turbo's

#

11 radiators iirc

fathom socket
#

Mad man performances

#

The engine is made of art that likes to eat fuel

stoic ledge
#

10 radiators, sorry xD

#

On top speed It's 100L fuel tank is empty within 10 minutes iirc

fathom socket
#

Damn

#

It's amazing how it drives like a gentle car but has crazy numbers of power behind you in the driver seat

#

Until you floor it and it's personality changes

stoic ledge
#

Yeah they did that well

#

At top speed, tires will burst after 15 minutes btw

#

But since it will run out of fuel after 12 minutes, you don't have to worry xD

dense shard
#

So extended fuel tanks aren't an option.

stoic ledge
#

Lol nope

fathom socket
stoic ledge
#

Also quite sure there isn't any room for a bigger tank xD

#

Luckily tires are only 50k a set

fathom socket
#

Yeah

#

My great grandfather and mother used to own one 1932 or 1921 Bugatti type something

stoic ledge
#

Damn

#

Did they keep it

#

Would have been worth big money by now

fathom socket
#

They give it to there young trusted friend because my great grandparents are dying to there age so yeah

#

I'm sure the car is still there just don't know that person

stoic ledge
#

Oof RIP

fathom socket
#

They hand to that person with no charge because they won't live much longer with the money they got

#

So it was nice of them

stoic ledge
#

Usually they give stuff like that to their kids, no?

fathom socket
#

Not to sure

#

But I was only born in 1997 so that was long long ago lol

stoic ledge
#

Lol

#

Build a time machine

fathom socket
#

Lmao

#

It's hard to believe that my great grandfather worked on big Ben during the great depression and moved to USA to help the people

#

It's strange that your older people do special things

#

Welp gotta go back to work I had fun talking on here lol

dense shard
#

So that's what Toyota calls the spare tire removal option on the Corolla hatch.

#

"Cargo Enhancement "

Actually they're not that bad, they use way less fuel

#

They're just very cancerogenic

civic girder
#

use way less fuel

#

nice blanket statement

#

riced pickups would like to challenge it

stoic ledge
#

Well > riced pickups

#

I mean, here in Europe we have many eco-diesels which in many countries got tax credits a couple of years ago

#

With those you could reach 50-60MPG

#

So yes, use less fuel

normal temple
#

@civic girder your car uses way less fuel and way more oil

civic girder
#

yes

#

it might seem like I get 15mpg

#

but that's really just 15 miles per quart

normal temple
#

Mpg = Mpg of oil right

#

oh

#

Lmao

civic girder
#

I'm just going with the meme

#

in actuality its more like 1000 miles per quart of motor oil

#

2 stroke is probably somewhere in the same ballpark

fathom socket
#

My 6.0l gets 15 MPG on the highway.

#

It uses no oil.

#

I change it exactly at 5,000 miles.

civic girder
#

at least my RX-7 gets like 20 on the highway

indigo coral
#

I've been driving my parents explorer and getting an average of.... 16 mpg!

#

xD

#

got 18 on a highway drive tho

fathom socket
#

It's got a 50 gallon tank.

#

I live in America where the gas is $2.00 gallon.

indigo coral
#

I live in America too, only have a 18.something gallon tank though iirc

#

gas is 2.70 here

fathom socket
#

It depends for me.

indigo coral
#

costco is the best place to get gas

fathom socket
#

In 2012 it wad close to $4.00 a gallon.

indigo coral
#

yeah

fathom socket
#

Costco and GetGo are the cheapest.

indigo coral
#

At one point during the 2012 spike in gas, Diesel crested 5$

fathom socket
#

Now it's down to around $2.00 a gallon.

indigo coral
#

thankfully it aint that expensive anymore

fathom socket
#

I didn't have a diesel then.

#

Now I do.

dense shard
#

I'm getting about 25mpg per tank in city/hilly driving.

fathom socket
#

And fuel is pretty cheap.

#

What vehicle do you have?

dense shard
#

Hills do a number on fuel economy.

#

I have a Toyota Corolla hatchback.

fathom socket
#

I was talking to FalconHand

indigo coral
#

We're going to dig into my RX tomorrow. See what we can do.

dense shard
#

Still haven't gone at it?

indigo coral
#

I was driving my parents 2014 Explorer Sport, since my '99 RX300 is broken

dense shard
#

Hopefully it can be made right.

fathom socket
#

That sucks.

#

What's wrong with it?

indigo coral
#

sounds like rod knock, but its intermittent so Ive got zero clue

#

rod knock can't be intermittent

#

I'ma be lazy and just cut and paste a help post from another discord. one sec.

fathom socket
#

Does it have a timing chain or a belt?

indigo coral
#

belt

fathom socket
#

Okay.

#

It can't be a timing chain ping.

indigo coral
#

Anyways, the other night I was driving my 1999 Lexus RX300, and came to a stop at a stop sign and the car started bucking and running weird. I pulled off into a parking spot, and it sounded for all the world like rod knock. I immediately turned it off (intuitively), and called my dad to come take a look. He came, we started it, and the noise persisted. We ran it for a minute and asked someone else, and we all agreed it sounded like rod knock. Then, we gave it just a tiny bit of revs (well under 2k) and it quieted down a bit. We carefully drove the car home, and it made it without major issue. I took it for a short drive last night, and it intermittently knocked/rattled. It can't be rod knock, as that can't be intermittent. Any suggestions? I have a video link of it doing it briefly in the past.
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbdJLvVHtig

#

thats an old video but it sounded similar

fathom socket
#

Okay.

#

I'll watch it in a few minutes.

dense shard
#

My money's on electrics.

indigo coral
#

ye, np. That video was about 6 months ago, and a few thousand miles.

fathom socket
#

I'm in a public space without headphones.

dense shard
#

Bad plug/coil/wire/or something.

indigo coral
#

Came back the other night

fathom socket
#

What does it sound like?

#

A pinging sound?

indigo coral
#

honestly it sounds like knocking.

#

but then it disappeared both times

fathom socket
#

Okay.

indigo coral
#

different circumstances though

fathom socket
#

What about an engine mount?

#

That pretty common.

dense shard
#

nah

indigo coral
#

first time it had been sitting for a few days, barely was able to start. battery was fine, but it was super unhappy. Made that noise, then faded after a couple minutes.

#

in the video

dense shard
#

Engine mount doesn't make that sound.

indigo coral
#

this time, I had been driving the car a bunch

#

then stopped for a few minutes, started it again, drove aobut two miles, and came to a stop at a stop sign

dense shard
#

Listening to it now. It sounds like some nasty ass lifter tick.

fathom socket
#

They get loose and sound like a knocking a sound.

indigo coral
#

the car started bucking and running rough, so i pulled into a parking spot

fathom socket
#

Okay.

indigo coral
#

it sounded like rod knocking, and so I turned it off and called my dad

#

20ish mins later, he came and i turned it back on and it persisted

dense shard
#

I've had a mount go out on me. It didn't sound anything like that video.

indigo coral
#

until we revved it just a tiny bit and it quieted down

#

we carefully drove it home amd it seemed to do okay

fathom socket
#

It go with that is rocker arm not tight.

#

Or valve issues.

dense shard
#

Pretty sure the RX300 is a dual cam engine.

indigo coral
#

my grandpa said it oculd be a sticking valve

fathom socket
#

Yeah.

dense shard
#

It honestly sounds like a valve.

indigo coral
#

but he just heard it over the phone lol

dense shard
#

Failing that bad plug.

fathom socket
#

Probably a valve issue.

#

Take it apart and report what you find.

#

Make sure to ping me.

indigo coral
#

alrightr

#

should I just take off teh front valve cover adn see whats underneath?

fathom socket
#

Good luck.

#

Yep.

#

Valve cover.

indigo coral
#

the one in the back is a PITA lol

fathom socket
#

And maybe the timing cover.

indigo coral
#

needs to be replaced regardless though

#

gasket is leaky a bit, but i did NOT run it out/low on oil

#

not even close

dense shard
#

sludge?

fathom socket
#

Wait, I've never heard of a rear valve cover.

indigo coral
#

transverse v6

dense shard
#

It's a tran-yeah

fathom socket
#

Oh.

indigo coral
#

yup

#

have to tkae off the engine wiring harness and the entire intake

fathom socket
#

Take both covers off.

#

And look at it.

#

And see if there's anything that doesn't look correct.

indigo coral
#

alright

dense shard
#

Dunno if you'll see anything.

fathom socket
#

How many miles does it have?

indigo coral
#

133k

fathom socket
#

Has the belt been replaced before?

indigo coral
#

yes

fathom socket
#

The timing belt. Not the drive belt.

indigo coral
#

mhm

#

it has

fathom socket
#

At what mileage?

indigo coral
#

around 90k, a few years ago

fathom socket
#

Okay.

indigo coral
#

lexus says to do it around 90k

fathom socket
#

You're good for that.

indigo coral
#

then again at 180 etc

fathom socket
#

So, tear into it and see if there's anything out of the ordinary.

dense shard
#

Again at 270k, but the fourth time is at 300k, because the Lexus guys don't have enough fingers between em to count that high.

#

It's why service costs are so high. They need a lot of people.

fathom socket
#

Lol.

#

Good luck.

#

I hope it's not something bad.

dense shard
#

Just do as Apple owners do.

#

Get a new car.

#

no wait... πŸ€”

fathom socket
#

Still a good car.

#

Don't get rid of it yet.

indigo coral
#

hopefully the engine isn't f*cked

#

figure it should be important to mention

#

no CEL, no codes, etc

fair bronze
#

Strange

dense shard
#

It only really enforces the non-fucked theory.

fair bronze
#

It does kinda sound like a valve though

indigo coral
#

yeah, we'll see tomorrow when we dig into it and try and come to some conclusion

#

cause its gonna be a bit of a mess if I don't have a car to drive when school starts back up

dense shard
#

It ain't rod knock.

indigo coral
#

yeah, cause rod knock can't be intermittent

dense shard
#

Among other things.

fair bronze
#

How's the belt tension?

#

Could be a tensioner

indigo coral
#

like a tensioner wearing out?

fair bronze
#

Yea

dense shard
#

That would cause knocking?

fair bronze
#

Rattling

indigo coral
#

it was almost exactly 6 months in between the two occurrences

dense shard
#

That would throw a code as well I imagine.

indigo coral
#

so I doubt its a tensioner

dense shard
#

We're talking about the accessories belt, right?

fair bronze
#

Not necessarily

indigo coral
#

in between those times it ran fine

dense shard
#

He'd lose alternator and water pump likely. That would throw a code.

#

And I imagine lots of belt squeal.

indigo coral
#

yeah electrics have been fine aside from when my idiot brother left the door cracked open and the door light stayed on and killed the battery lol

fair bronze
#

Just the tensioner going bad wouldn't mean anything would stop working though

#

It could just be a bearing on a tensioner for example

#

It would still work but make a rattling noise like that

dense shard
#

oh, so the tensioner is still doing it's job, just not quite spinning like it should.

fair bronze
#

Exactly

indigo coral
#

maybe

#

will have to take it apart and see

dense shard
#

That's a theory. And you could 100% place that noise.

fair bronze
#

Mhm

indigo coral
#

can't see the timing belt without taking a whole bunch of stuff off

dense shard
#

nah, you can listen for it.

indigo coral
#

ill add that to the list of things to check tomorrow

fair bronze
#

Hopefully it won't be too bad for you

dense shard
#

A valve tick vs. tensioner will be obvious where it's coming from.

indigo coral
#

I'll get a video of it running tomorrow if its not making the big noise

dense shard
#

Put your ear close to it.

indigo coral
#

its always ticked a bit, but thats fuel injectors firing or something according to lexus forums

fair bronze
#

If it doesn't misfire it can't be a valve issue

dense shard
#

oh boy weather is getting fucky.

fair bronze
#

It doesn't seem to run irregularly

#

My money is on a tensioner or pulley

indigo coral
dense shard
#

Mine is on valve train.

#

Just to keep this thing interesting.

indigo coral
#

valve covers need to come off anyways, so we can take a look underneath

fair bronze
#

Engine still seems to run smoothly though

indigo coral
#

usually it does

#

wasn't running smoothly at the stop sign though lol

#

RPMs were all over the place, car shaking and bucking etc.

#

until I was actually stopped I thought it was just my warped rotors

#

lol

fair bronze
#

Maybe it's just haunted

indigo coral
#

lol

fair bronze
#

Now I'm not too sure about the tensioner theory either

#

Can't really hear where the sound is coming from

indigo coral
#

the more recent time it sounded like it was coming from the bottom left/center of the engine

#

but sound bounces around so idk

fair bronze
indigo coral
#

hmm....

#

could that go away with a bit of revs and be gone for 6 months?

dense shard
#

Could be improperly installed.

fair bronze
#

Not impossible

indigo coral
#

we'll take a look

fair bronze
#

Keep us updated

#

Would love to know the cause

indigo coral
#

Took our scan tool out and scanned it, saw nothing. Let it idle for a bit, nothing out of the ordinary. So I took it for a 10 mile drive, starting out careful and it was fine so I got into it and nothing seemed amiss

#

wtf car

#

worked fine, power seemed typical (that is to say, slow as hell)

normal temple
#

Cursed

indigo coral
#

sure seems like it

#

only issues i noted was a bit of burning oil (from vcg we think, not huge deal, planned to fix soon), and my leaky exhaust flex pipe

#

which both are known entities/problems

normal temple
indigo coral
#

lmaooo

civic girder
#

Lmao

#

Speaking of BP, I was filling up the car there, and then we lost powe

#

Power*

civic girder
#

Doo my eyes spy an FC

normal temple
#

Your eyes spied wrong

#

Issa 944

civic girder
#

ew

#

why would I want a german off-brand FC

normal temple
#

lmao

civic girder
#

It still bothers me that Retro reviews recommended the 944 over the GSL-SE

#

even though the GSL-SE was actually faster in a straight line

#

and was like $10k cheaper and only like 1 second slower on the track

normal temple
#

lmao

dense shard
#

And far more durable, reliable, cheaper, and easier to repair.

#

Remember the 944 had a rear transaxle with a torque tube. Wanna replace the clutch. lol get a new car.

indigo coral
#

Wait really?

#

Clutch wasn't replaceable?

dense shard
#

It is, but you have to drop half the drive train out iirc.

indigo coral
#

isn't that how every car is? Trans has to come out?

dense shard
#

And the torque tube which runs the length of the car.

indigo coral
#

I assume that's not at the bottom but like mixed in with a lot of shit?

civic girder
#

the trans isn't "half the drive train"

dense shard
#

Transmission AND torque tube

#

The big metal tube connecting the engine to the transmission.

civic girder
#

It's also hilarious to see someone say that the Porsche is more reliable than the RX-7

dense shard
#

16-24 hour job for a home mechanic.

civic girder
#

jesus fuck

indigo coral
#

oh yikes

civic girder
#

and the 944 is front engine too, wtf

dense shard
#

But trans is in the back.

#

Like the Corvette.

civic girder
#

oh god why

dense shard
#

Great weight distribution, but frankly... the 944 was never fast enough to need 50/50 balance.

civic girder
#

transaxle sounds like more pain than its worth

dense shard
#

It's an exotic feature for exotic cars.

#

The 944 was the everyman's' exotic, but with the pains associated with exotics.

civic girder
#

944 was never fast enough to need 50/50
Yea, you know you're slow when a bone stock RX-7 FB is faster in a straight line

dense shard
#

The 944 was tragically slow even in the 80s.

#

It needed two iterations of a turbo engine to make it competitive.

civic girder
#

The 944 was probably slower on the track too, they were just paid to say it was faster than the RX-7

indigo coral
#

I've stopped driving my car in normal mode πŸ‘€

#

It's so reluctant to shift it's a bit dangerous

dense shard
#

Or the RX-7 had bad seals and was running bad.

civic girder
#

maybe, lmao

dense shard
#

Or maybe the 944 had a tune.

civic girder
#

it blew out the apex seals at the end of the drag race πŸ˜‚

dense shard
#

Or maybe the driver got lucky. Frankly 1 second either way for amateurs is nothing.

civic girder
#

yea

#

I saw that and was like, "the fuck"

dense shard
#

yes yes one inch or one mile a win is a win

#

But we ain't racing for pink slips.

civic girder
#

you're still gonna recommend people buy the more expensive car because it was 1 sec faster on the track?

#

like, bruh

indigo coral
#

I was going up hill today and literally nearly pushing the pedal to the floor and nope. no 2nd gear for me.

#

As soon as i flipped the switch to power mode, it went right in and was fine

civic girder
#

for 1 sec difference, I'd rather buy the cheaper car and use the money I save to make it faster than the more expensive car

indigo coral
#

so yeah screw normal mode

dense shard
#

For 10 grand you can buy a Miata and go faster that way. lol

indigo coral
#

lol

dense shard
#

πŸ€” no seriously... You have an RX-7 Cars and Coffee machine, and a track day Miata.

civic girder
#

There's someone around here with a 944. I've seen it a couple times

dense shard
#

You'll probably still save on upkeep.

civic girder
#

Yea.

dense shard
#

lol

civic girder
#

If I was going to get a track car, it would be something pathetically cheap

#

probably not even a Miata, tbh

#

something so cheap that if it got a dent I could just say "fuck it, time to get a new car"

dense shard
#

Then again I don't think anyone who listens to funky town would even consider a 944...

indigo coral
#

here's an unpopular opinion, i find the NA miata to be heinously ugly

civic girder
#

lmao

dense shard
#

Good tastes forbids it.

#

NA is a goober car. Cute, silly, fun.

civic girder
#

I think the 944 looks ok, but like, everything else is atrociously bad

dense shard
#

I much prefer the NB for styling.

indigo coral
#

agreed

dense shard
#

Still cute, but much more mature.

indigo coral
#

it looks a bit more... finished

#

NA looks like they were rushed to get something out

civic girder
#

I like all the Miatas. NA and ND are my favs, NA because pop up bias, ND because I think it pulls off the modern aggression styling

#

NB and NC are good too ofc

#

NC def the ugliest tho

#

Ironically tho, I've never driven an NA or ND

#

but I've drive both NB and NC

indigo coral
#

i drove a NA briefly on our road

#

its too damn small

civic girder
#

oh yea

#

that's my biggest complaint with all Miatas

dense shard
#

NA is fun.

indigo coral
#

Though.

#

I like me my big sedans.

#

So.

dense shard
#

Very direct and communicative.

#

I'd very much like a Miata.

civic girder
#

Miatas are hella fun to drive, but are super tiny

normal temple
#

I heard talk about NC being ugly

#

You take that back, its the happiest soap bar

civic girder
#

I didn't say the NC was ugly, just the worst looking of all the Miatas

dense shard
#

NC stands for Notoriously Chungus.

normal temple
#

fuck

indigo coral
#

Lol

normal temple
#

Okay ima go die now

#

Carry on

civic girder
#

Like, if I were to get a Miata, I'd probably get an NC just because they're the biggest

indigo coral
#

if I was presented with a Genesis G70 and a Model 3 dual motor for the same price idk what I'd pick.............

civic girder
#

I can barely drive an NB because the pedals are too close together

normal temple
#

I know what you should pick

civic girder
#

My RX-7 because it combines smol car with big comfy interior

dense shard
#

I'd get the NB. I just happen to like the styling the most.

normal temple
#

A Toyota Corolla

civic girder
#

I'd race one, ngl

dense shard
#

Already got a Corolla.

indigo coral
#

the new corolla is actually cool

civic girder
#

they're cheap af and you can do a lot with them

indigo coral
#

wish it had way more power though

dense shard
#

nah, 170 is plenty.

civic girder
#

yea

#

170 is a lot

indigo coral
#

its 12 seconds to 60 isnt it?

dense shard
#

Makes as much power as a Corvette in 1984.

normal temple
#

What's power

dense shard
#

7ish seconds to 60 for the 2.0.

indigo coral
#

o

normal temple
#

cries in lack of torque

indigo coral
#

that's not too terrible

dense shard
#

Closer to 10 with the last gen.

I have two 100 hp cars, anything more than 130hp is a lot for me

indigo coral
#

I have 220 but I bet your prius is quicker in practice

dense shard
#

The 'rolla is an upgrade from the 60 I had.

normal temple
#

I drove a 550 hp M4 πŸ€”

civic girder
#

the Prius is faster than you think it is

#

but its slow as fuck

normal temple
#

Its all about the driver

#

πŸ˜‚

civic girder
#

even the RX-7 is faster, despite less torque and power

indigo coral
#

when the car was brand new, if my car was absolutely floored, and actually cooperating, it could hit 8.8s

civic girder
#

the main difference is in the drivetrain

indigo coral
#

to 60

civic girder
#

the Prius has the most limiting drivetrain of all time

indigo coral
#

but 20 years later, some horses have escaped and flooring it makes it not work well

#

so

#

I bet the prius is just as quick

#

if not quicker

civic girder
#

Floor it, and it takes a solid two seconds for the engine to rev

normal temple
#

Neutral drop it

indigo coral
#

if I just cane it from a stop, it doesn't seem to engage properly

#

if I start out then give it more, it works fine.

civic girder
#

if you floor the Prius in neutral it only revs to like 2k rpm and stays there

normal temple
#

wow

civic girder
#

it hates revving in neutral

indigo coral
#

wow really?

civic girder
#

yea

normal temple
#

boring

indigo coral
#

weird

civic girder
#

the computer limits it

indigo coral
#

i found out the 99 RX has a higher redline than any of the others

#

which i found weird

normal temple
indigo coral
#

though it always shifts before 6k, even near floored

#

lol

#

which is fine

#

I almost had it all the way down today, and it only made it to 5300 rpm

civic girder
#

The Prius engine can rev to like 6k, but the computer limits it to like 5k

indigo coral
#

yeah thats how mine does

civic girder
#

If you floor it, the CVT will hold the Prius at 5k

normal temple
#

CVT

#

Un fun

dense shard
#

But it works.

normal temple
#

Tell that to Nissan

civic girder
#

LMAO

dense shard
#

Right after I tell Honda about reliable manual and automatics.

#

And Ford about their slushbox.

civic girder
#

I asked my friend who works at a dealership how often they get someone coming in for CVT replacements in their Nissan.

He said: "I don't work in the repair shop, but I can tell you I see one on the shipping invoices every now and then"

indigo coral
#

I'd take a cvt over my 4spd slushbox

civic girder
#

Toyota hybrids with CVTs are pretty good. They are unfun cars, but hella reliable and get great economy

dense shard
#

Remember the early 2000s Hondas had glass transmissions as well.

indigo coral
#

if I'm flooring it on a hill, I want the car to fucking shift. I don't want to go flipping switches to change trans profiles and have it slam into second.

dense shard
#

I'm not gonna judge Nissan anymore harshly than I judge Honda.

normal temple
#

WRX 5 speeds blowup at stock power

civic girder
#

like, even when I rear ended an SUV and fucked the Prius' radiator, it wasn't leaking and I still made it the 45 minute drive home

dense shard
#

Honda 6 speed manuals had a bum 3rd gear synchro out the factory.

indigo coral
#

thats why it was fun driving my mom's explorer, a decent 6 speed and 365hp makes for decent performance

normal temple
#

Who needs synchros

civic girder
#

^

normal temple
#

Double clutch that shit in

civic girder
#

double clutch is fun

dense shard
#

Problem is the rest of the transmission would get fucked along with it.

civic girder
#

I've driven a car without synchros before

dense shard
#

And Honda refused to act on it for 5-6 years.

normal temple
#

Eh, you win some, you lose some

dense shard
#

This wasn't an issue fixed until the late 00s.

indigo coral
#

I'm surprised how decent the trans on our fords is

#

wicked turbo lag though lmao

civic girder
#

The CVT in my dad's Fusion is meh

#

but I hate the Fusion overall

indigo coral
#

not sure the actual model designation, but both cars have a 6 speed

#

its actually pretty damn good

civic girder
#

(he has the hybrid)

indigo coral
#

not a PDK or 8HP, but decent

normal temple
#

I have a 4 speed, do I win

indigo coral
#

same

civic girder
#

I have a CVT and a 5 speed

dense shard
#

Honestly... safest bet remains manual.

normal temple
#

I use race mode all the time

civic girder
#

it's hard to fuck up a manual unless you try

dense shard
#

It's hard to fuck up the simplicity of a classic manual transmission.

indigo coral
#

I wish the Giulia wasn't so horribly unreliable

civic girder
#

manual swap it

normal temple
#

My dad looks at me weird when I shift from 5th to R(ace)

dense shard
#

Then again modern transmissions are by and large pretty great.

civic girder
#

DCTs are unreliable as fuck

indigo coral
#

I love the shift paddles on the Giulia
