Yup, it really could be. If you suspect it's a misfiring cylinder caused by a bad coil or otherwise, it's easy to check that. Although, that'd be more of something that doesn't just come and go, so yeah. I had code P000B in my Crosstrek last spring.

The Subaru internal diagnostic PDF stated it could have been numerous things related to the CAM timing system, but between myself and our trusted mechanic, we ruled out the need to perform timing chain work (would have been very expensive in my model year) and just replaced the faulty OCV unit.

Ah, gotcha - do you have an OSBII scanner? Asking because many times it may not have thrown a code yet, but will have a pending code stored in memory - most ODB scanners will show you pending codes in addition to actual real codes.

but i wouldnt change out the motor but would do as little as you can without adding a mechanic in a bottle cause it could make it worse and save money for another vehicle/engine. rebuilding any modern engine is more cost than replacing it entirely and new/reman engines usually have a warranty. depending where you live if you have high temps in your area and its getting worse maybe a thicker 10w30 but no thicker or the oil wont be able to make it through the oil journals and lubricate correctly
