And it didn't overheat on the Nürburgring.

fathom socket

the taycan handles lightyears better than the tesla

#

even though it weighs more

dense shard
#

We've all seen that picture. lol

wheat hatch
#

So what if it is worse?
All the guys with cash are still going to buy the Taycan over the Tesla.
Because you know, history and prestige.

eager kite
#

Mission E was never raced so you can't compare it's handling to a Taycan

dense shard
#

You can compare basic baseline tests.

#

Like emergency lane changes.

eager kite
#

By all the metrics we were told, Taycan is worse than mission E

dense shard
#

Which are more important than track times.

His complaint was that tesla over promises and under delivers

eager kite

I'm showing how that's the same for porsche with the Mission E --> Taycan

fossil imp

Everything about the Taycan is worse than the Mission E

eager kite
#

No not at all, I'm just showing how he should be upset with porshe as well

#

If he isn't then he's not being consistent

indigo coral
#

I used to think I was a bit of a Tesla fanboy but holy shit you take the cake @eager kite

eager kite
#

This has nothing to do with me promoting or supporting tesla

indigo coral
#

LOL.

wheat hatch
#

LOL

eager kite
#

Simply seeing if the guy is consistent

indigo coral
#

I'm actually wondering, can Model 3 do the 'ring without overheating?

dense shard
#

I prefer the Taycan's styling.

wheat hatch
#

Probably

fossil imp
#

no it cant

wheat hatch
#

Oh noes

dense shard
#

As I said earlier I prefer my cars to have character lines.

#

Tesla is a bit lacking... bland.

indigo coral
#

Model S is based on a platform from 2012, so until it's redesigned I'm okay with cutting it some slack but if the 3 overheats then Tesla just had flawed design

dense shard
#

I'm not upset with Porsche.

eager kite
dense shard
#

Because the price of the Taycan is so far beyond the realm of reality that I don't care.

indigo coral
#

Wat no the taycan is a great car

#

4s even better

#

103k base

dense shard
#

The 4S brings the price down to reality, and frankly it could be better.

#

I think I've said this... hold on

wheat hatch
#

I mean, it should be able to do it just fine.
Since it's not about staying top speed for longer periods of time.

eager kite

so you're not consistent, it's ok most people aren't @dense shard

indigo coral

stoic ledge

dense shard

#

Hold the hell up. Don't put words in my mouth Arial.

wheat hatch
#

lmao @stoic ledge

eager kite
#

"I'm not upset with Porsche."

#

sorry

#

not putting words in your mouth

dense shard
#

Upset is a strong word.

eager kite
dense shard
#

I'm not excited about the Taycan, but I'm not upset.

#

Upset is having a family member die.

#

Upset is crashing my car.

eager kite
#

are you upset that they overpromised and underdelivered

dense shard
#

No. I'm not upset.

#

I'm just disappointed.

#

I don't think extreme emotional responses are a good use of my time.

eager kite
#

so you are disappointed as well that with tesla they said they would get a 5k running rate by the end of 2017 but it didn't happen until 2018

dense shard
#

Yes, very.

eager kite
#

why very

dense shard
#

Because the Model 3 was actually exciting to see happen.

#

I wanted to be proven wrong.

#

They had every ability, chance, and drive to prove me wrong.

#

They proved my predictions right.

#

Which is disappointing.

#

If I owned stock I'd be upset.

eager kite
#

I mean they weren't on time with the prediction but the contents of it came true nonetheless

dense shard
#

Eventually.

eager kite
#

yea not to long after their prediction

#

and they seem to be getting better at it recently

dense shard
#

And if Porsche doesn't delivery on their ultra charging by 2021 I'll be also quite upset.

#

Because Porsche resources are vastly deeper than Tesla's.

eager kite
#

we can agree on that

wheat hatch
#

There ya go

dense shard
#

But if I had 40k to blow on an EV.

#

I'd get a Hyundai.

#

And use the left over 10k to buy a used Miata or something.

indigo coral
#

At one point Kia mentioned doing am EV version of the Stinger but I don't think that's happening :'(

dense shard
#

Everyone is left in a funk right now.

#

EVs didn't hit critical mass yet.

#

Tesla is powered on memes. (and the charger network)

#

The rest are just... products on the market.

#

If you can afford only one electric car... you get a Tesla for the range potential.

#

If you can afford two cars... you get either one of the Germans... or a Tesla because that's cool.

eager kite
#

I mean, for me personally, I'd prefer getting a car I can take road trips on

dense shard
#

Even as a commuting proposition... you don't get a Leaf or a budget electric because you can save 10 grand and get a Corolla that's loaded.

#

Or save 15, and get a base Corolla.

#

Or save 20 and get a Kia Rio... which isn't as bad as people thing anymore.

#

If I HAD to go electric.

indigo coral
#

The Rio isn't half bad

dense shard
#

I'd go for a Tesla. My doubts on their survival aside... they're the key.

indigo coral
#

The cheap Kia's aren't as fancy as the stinger obviously but they're not bad at all

dense shard
#

They have all the basic tech you want.

#

And are cheap to run.

eager kite
#

The other EVs aren't horrible, they just aren't on the same level as a Tesla

#

and they can't travel

#

which for most people is a deal breaker

stoic ledge
#

and they can't travel
GWmythsBlobGlare

eager kite
#

yea they can't travel

dense shard
#

You can't take a Kona very far.

eager kite
#

try going cross country in anything besides a Tesla

#

it would be hell

dense shard
#

280 miles of range aside... the super charger network is kinda what makes Teslas a no brainer as a primary car.

#

Secondary car... dunno... Teslas are still the "cool choice"

stoic ledge
#

The Kona still has a real world range of 400+ km

dense shard
#

I think the Koreans are the best alternative.

eager kite
#

yes but that isn't useful if it takes 8 hours to charge

stoic ledge
#

Same as a standard range Model 3

dense shard
#

If you are using an EV as a commuter.

#

The charging time isn't an issue.

eager kite
#

yes ik

dense shard
#

You plug it in at night, and have a full charge by morning.

stoic ledge
#

They're working on that, or maybe they fixed it already? Idk

eager kite
#

which means you would buy these other EVs as secondary cars

dense shard
#

And it's not like you charge anything from zero.

eager kite
#

not primary cars

dense shard
#

I mean... here's teh question.

eager kite
#

sure, but if you're going on a road trip

dense shard
#

How often do you go on long road trips?

#

You could just rent a car.

eager kite
#

you're gonna get it pretty low

#

I go on few hundred mile road trips every month or so

#

longer ones at least 4 times a year

#

so renting a car would mean I'm paying probably $5K to $10k a year

stoic ledge
#

I just fill up my car if I want to take a road trip pogey

eager kite
#

The point is that commuter cars wouldn't work for people like me

#

for normal people just going to work and back every day

#

these lower range, poor charging infrastructure cars are great

stoic ledge
#

"poor charging infrastructure"

Laughs in Ionity

eager kite
#

ionity also has a shit charging infrastructure

stoic ledge
#

Tesla was also shit, just wait a couple of months, they are popping up everywhere

#

Tesla is still meh, wow we have 5 superchargers at a hotel here nearby, that's it. Woah, fancy

dense shard
#

Could be worse.

#

The only super charger in Birmingham is in a sketchy part of town next to an interstate that has been torn down.

eager kite
#

0 ionity chargers in the US

dense shard
#

For now.

#

And apparently the US will have a different network... one which will be built out by Ford & Co.

fossil imp
#

meanwhile in the uk....

#

fuck all

stoic ledge
#

It's pure coincidence there's a station nearby, the first next one is in another country 60km from here

#

So convenient

eager kite
#

damn even the euro network is super small

dense shard
#

60km between chargers isn't bad.

fossil imp
#

i lie theres one in my multistorey carpark, funny watching every1 fight over it as i make my way home

eager kite
#

yea, most of them only have 4 stalls

#

like wtf

#

0 futureproofing there

stoic ledge
#

Also all just 120kW, so fast ned with 150kW can charge faster pogey

eager kite
#

current tesla supercharger map

#

grey are ones being built in 2019

stoic ledge
#

X doubt they will be finished in 3 months

eager kite
#

ionity map for reference

#

Most of those are already built

#

Tesla updates this map once a year

#

but Tesla navigation updates them live

stoic ledge
#

Ionity started just 12 months ago

#

Big upside: many manufacturers can use them

dense shard
#

Ford's will be universal apparently.

eager kite
#

many manufacturers could use Tesla's network

#

they just don't want to

#

idk why

dense shard
#

Privacy issues I imagine.

eager kite
#

mmm

#

pretty easy to set up a system to use Tesla's supercharger network without giving out any trade secrets

dense shard
#

Not trade secrets.

#

Customer data.

eager kite
#

?

dense shard
#

Tesla can track the customers of other car company users.

eager kite
#

as will Ionity

dense shard
#

Ionity is an independent company.

eager kite
#

sure

#

and they need your information to charge you

#

for your charge stay

#

either way the company is going to use your information

dense shard
#

Yes, but they won't be giving it to a competitor.

eager kite
#

ok, I still don't see why that would make a difference

dense shard
#

Ask that to the other auto makers.

eager kite
#

not much Tesla can do with the knowledge of what competitor EVs are charging where

#

like, it'll just be a blanket, "they're charging all over europe"

#

but yea, Tesla has offered that any auto company that wants to use their network they are willing to work out a deal with

stoic ledge
#

I'm quite curious for next year, we're getting quite a lot of new EVs

Peugeot e-208, Opel/Vauxhall Corsa-e, Renault Zoe
Honda e (but that's too expensive)
Polestar 2, XC40 P8, XC40 P4, ID.3, and I'm probably forgetting some

eager kite
#

yea the future is looking more EV by the minute

#

which is great

stoic ledge
#

So far this year, more EVs than diesels have been sold in 🇳🇱 *

* sold a.k.a obtained as company cars

eager kite
#

cool

#

good for reducing emissions

#

as a lot of company cars put a ton of miles on

stoic ledge
#

Good for spending my tax money puggers

#

Nah 75+% of new cars sold here are company cars anyways

#

Only elderly people or richies can afford new cars xD

eager kite
#

I mean it's good either way

#

if the majority of new cars are EVs

stoic ledge
#

Well it's not the majority, that's still gas

eager kite
#

means that more people are buying EVs, and the used market will in a few years or so become more dominated with EVs

#

ah sorry

#

read your thing wrong

#

well

#

EV is still better than diesel

stoic ledge
#

means that more people are buying EVs, and the used market will in a few years or so become more dominated with EVs

Inb4 they all get exported

#

We've seen it before, PHEV's were nearly free as company cars, and now 80% of those PHEVs have been exported (fact)

indigo coral
#

oof

#

i have to agree with arial on the thing about Evs being better than shitty dieselst hough

#

i'd never get a diesel unless its a big truck

Anyone ever done/gotten rust repair done before? Trying to fix some rust on the bottom of my doors on my dodge so I can prep it to sell. Wondering what a rough cost would be. It's about the bottom half inch of both front doors, front to back

shadow osprey
#

It's a 20 year old truck, chill a bit lol

fossil imp
#

@shadow osprey i mean u can do it on the cheap but it wont last, best way is to reskin the door

#

on the cheap would be a couple hundred bucks or less

shadow osprey
#

I more worried about the amount of material on that section of the door. I'm afraid if I grind it down, it'll grind the bottom of the door off

fossil imp
#

oh u not painting it?

#

jus prep

#

meh

#

lol is the rust that bad then?

shadow osprey
#

Wait would I not paint it... it'll just rust again

#

No, but it's literally two pieces of sheet metal. It's the bottom of the door. Like the bottom bottom where it meets the rocker panel

fossil imp
#

only 1 way to find out

#

grind away if it falls apart weld in new 😄

shadow osprey
#

-_- that's why I'm getting a 3rd party opinion

#

You buyin a welder?

fossil imp
#

no 😄

#

i mean u wont know until u try so

shadow osprey
#

Yeah but I'm not tryna drive around with a missing section of door

fossil imp
#

stab the area with a screwdriver if it feels solid then start grindin n sanding

#

if not find a friendly welder 😉

#

buy a new door from a scrappy?

#

shadow osprey
#

I'm not stabbing my doors with a screw driver. It's not a farm truck lmao

#

I know the techniques of finding rust

fossil imp

if its bad i would jus get another door tbh

shadow osprey
#

Might, depends on what the shop says

fossil imp

less hassle

shadow osprey
#

#

I really don't wanna go through the trouble of finding mint white doors

All I wanted was to know if anyone had a guess at pricing dog lol

fossil imp

shadow osprey
#

I know what my options are

fossil imp
#

could be 100 bucks could be thousands

#

lol

shadow osprey
#

thanks

#

👌

fossil imp
#

when ive had it happen i just got it reskinned

#

then it was like new

shadow osprey
#

what do you mean reskinned

fossil imp
#

separate the whole panel weld on a new one

#

or cut out the rusty area and patch it

shadow osprey
#

well.. it's on both sides so

fossil imp
#

yes either would still work

#

reskin or patch

#

but

#

not worth doing without prep n paint

shadow osprey
#

Yeah but i'd have to reskin the inside sheet and outside sheet. so... a new door

#

I'm still curious as to who grinds down rust then leaves bare metal

fossil imp
#

well u would prime it at least

shadow osprey
#

I know lol that was me saying paint is obvious

fossil imp
#

i meant topcoat

#

earlier

#

jus yeet the door n sell it

#

done

shadow osprey
#

lol

#

Jeep style ok

#

Good idea for october

fossil imp
#

👍

#

sell it next summer then

shadow osprey
#

Still doesn't fix the rust problem -___-

fossil imp
#

just go for it

#

whats the worst that can happen

#

get stuck in lad

shadow osprey
#

I have to buy new doors and get them paint matched, which will undoubtedly be the most expensive option

fossil imp
#

nah it'll be fine

#

if its only an inch like u said

shadow osprey
#

On the thinnest part of the door

fossil imp
#

i had a similar thing on 1 of my cars, bottom corner of the door fell apart when i got the grinder on it

#

i just packed the whole area with filler lol

#

job done

#

sold

#

u could fibreglass the area to shape it nicely

#

then yeet it with bondo

shadow osprey
#

I don't think you're understanding what I'm talking about... it's sheet metal thick. There's nothing behind it. If it grinds away, I can't patch it with chicken wire and bondo, or fill it with expandable foam and glass it

fossil imp
#

u can lol

#

like i said i had the exact samething happen

#

look do u want to sell it or not?

#

lol

shadow osprey
#

I want it to look nice

fossil imp
#

😩

#

then u have to pay

shadow osprey
#

all I asked for was A PRICE

#

geez lmfao

fossil imp
#

and i told u

#

jesus christ

#

do it on the cheap for cents or pay hundreds maybe more

shadow osprey
#

Ok, but anyone can say that

fossil imp
#

there is no fixed price

#

coz its dependant on how deep the rust is

shadow osprey
#

Considering the volume of people on this server, I was hoping someone could at the very least give an hourly rate

fossil imp
#

which dictates what kinda job is needed

shadow osprey
#

Yes I know

fossil imp
#

y not just take it to a local shop n get a quote?

#

hourly rates is what 50-60 bucks

#

well here it is

shadow osprey
#

Is that like GBP or something cause I need to move to wherever you live

fossil imp

It struggled to beat an Avalon from 8 years ago on release.

Hell... on interior dimensions it failed to beat the previous Taurus... which shared a freaking platform.

indigo coral

ye, better in the Avalon in terms of performance though. Ours has the performance pack plus so its actually not bad (tighter shocks, steering and bigger brakes)

dense shard

The SHO, sure.

#

But the standard package V6 wasn't that much better.

indigo coral

yeah

I think the only way you could justify a taurus over another car is 1. being a resolute ford person or 2. wanting hte SHO for performance

@dense shard (late replay, lol)
Last week I swapped out the belts, but the car was still kinda sluggish and that introduced a really fucking loud squeal at 4krpm and higher.
I figured out what was squealing, which was the air pump pulley bearings. Since the air pump is a non-essential piece of the emissions system, I took the belt off. Engine is revving freely without the bad bearing holding it back. Redline is now easy and quick. As far as I can tell, I may have boosted power output by a slim margin as well, no more than 5hp max.

#

by decommissioning the air pump, part of the emissions system is now non functional. which is a general improvement, cleaner sound and nice stronk smell of burnt oil + 2 stroke + gas. next step will be a cat delet, rats nest delet, and removing the air pump and replacing it with block plates until I get a new exhaust manifold.

#

I can't

#

Car is just old

#

It's decently in alignment but not perfect, just by nature of 20y/o parts and wheels

dense shard
#

Tesla drivers think they're all special and stuff.

#

But Nissan's propilot actually does a decent job of self driving on the highway.

#

Which is horrifying.

Mercedes has been working on self driving cars for 30+ years

#

they've had some pretty significant success

dense shard
#

Everyone has tbh.

#

Except for America.

indigo coral
#

lol

dense shard
#

Like GM has super cruise.

#

But I haven't heard much progress since it was released on a couple of cars.

indigo coral
#

funny enough it would be useful to have it over here moreso than europe a lot of the time

#

because americans tend to go on much longer drives

dense shard
#

ain't that the truth.

indigo coral
#

tesla is the only one thats doing anything usable

#

super cruise is cool but requires too much maitenence

#

they have to map the road before you can drive it, which has its benefits but isn't sustainable

dense shard
#

I mean Super Cruise does work pretty cool, but I think Tesla's system seems to work better.

#

Despite the hardware.

indigo coral
#

that and Tesla's system is more ....

#

flexible

#

like its understanding whats going on more than super cruise, its not just taking in data from a pre-created map

dense shard
#

Dunno if it's more flexible though.

#

Tesla's systems are exclusively camera based now.

indigo coral
#

super cruise doesn't work at all unless that company that GM paid has mapped the road

dense shard
#

Which limits utility in bad weather.

indigo coral
#

really?

dense shard
#

No radar.

indigo coral
#

they gave up on using the radar to supplement?

#

wow

dense shard
#

no lidar

indigo coral
#

i knew no li-dar

dense shard
#

I'd have to double check, but I believe it's all camera based now.

indigo coral
#

i thought it was camera+ normal radar but idk for sure

dense shard
#

oh wait, appears it does use radar.

carmine summit
#

yeah I wouldn't trust it if it didn't have something other than a camera
