false sense of security leads to people driving too fast on slippery roads and sliding into ditches

dense shard
#

sure

#

But that's not what we're talking about right now.

carmine summit
#

I love driving past lifted 4WD trucks stuck in snowy ditches in a FWD vw

dense shard
#

We're talking about equivalents.

indigo coral
#

I live on a big hill. To get to that big hill, you have to go up another big hill. I'd rather not chance it with FWD

#

You can crash in any car if your a dipshit

dense shard
#

Frankly... the Sportwagen isn't a great argument over the Tiguan.

#

Cause spec for spec the Tiguan isnt' any worse... but it is far newer.

carmine summit
#

how is a 2019 tiguan newer than a 2019 sportwagen

indigo coral
#

For example when I get a Stinger GT, it will 100% be an AWD model instead of RWD

dense shard
#

The Sportwagen is based on an older platform.

#

And is being discontinued in the US either next year or this.

stoic ledge
#

Sportwagen is from 2012, Tiguan 2016

#

That's the difference Monte means

#

(I think)

dense shard
#

More or less.

carmine summit
#

still both MQB platform, so not really a newer platform just a newer variation of the platform

dense shard
#

yep

eager kite
dense shard
#

newer variation

carmine summit
#

guess we'll have to agree to disagree, I'd rather save the $7k by buying a Sportwagen over a Tiguan but to each their own

dense shard
#

wut

#

They're about the same price.

#

Hardly a 7k difference.

carmine summit
#

Canadian Tiguan is $29k base

dense shard
#

24k in the US.

#

vs. 22k for the Sportwagen

#

Adding AWD to both narrows that price difference to about 1k.

stoic ledge
#

€35k here 😛 (1.5TSI)

dense shard
#

cripes

stoic ledge
#

130hp manual puggers

carmine summit
#

$24k base sportwagen here, $31k base 4MO Tiguan

dense shard
#

Give up your lovely quality of life, come to the US MK. Where the cars are cheap.

stoic ledge
#

Maybe I will 🙂

dense shard
#

Well cheaper.

stoic ledge
#

Or I move about .3 of a mile, a cross the border to Belgium xD Where cars are also much cheaper

dense shard
#

Man the Sportwagen isn't a great value proposition.

#

To get any features puts you into the 30s.

stoic ledge
#

Cheapest 4Motion Tiguan is €52k puggers

dense shard
#

So VW puts a 5000 dollar premium on the bigger but over the Golf.

#

lol no wonder they're killing it in the US.

#

okay, and the Golf isn't that great compared to my Corolla.

carmine summit
#

you can get a highline with 4 motion and a manual for $29k CAD

stoic ledge
#

4Motion is only with the DSG here (due to emissions, the manual is more expensive 😂 )

dense shard
#

Does it come with radar cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot warning, and other nifty features that should come on a car priced at over 25k?

carmine summit
#

that's an $800 package

stoic ledge
#

The base one doesn't

dense shard
#

oof

carmine summit
#

if I was buying a car I'd rather not have those

dense shard
#

I thought that.

#

Until I started test driving cars.

#

Blind spot assist is excellent for peace of mind.

#

Radar cruise is just pure luxury.

#

The rest are just useful on long road trips.

carmine summit
#

meh

dense shard
#

yeh

#

It's good shit yo

carmine summit
#

it may be nice but if I have the option I'd rather not have them

dense shard
#

why tho

carmine summit
#

because

dense shard
#

Why look for a car that is less safe?

carmine summit
#

if I could get one here I'd want an R wagon with no electronic assists

dense shard
#

But why.

carmine summit
#

because I wanna drive

#

not have the car drive me

dense shard
#

Yeah, you can drive with all that safety stuff.

#

Trust me.

#

I'm driving myself just fine in my car.

#

I dare say a good deal better than in my old Accord which didn't even have ABS.

carmine summit
#

the problem with a lot of those systems is that they're subject to failure, I wouldn't want to rely on the car to tell me someone is behind me only to have it fail and run over someone

dense shard
#

That's why you pay attention.

carmine summit
#

I like my MK3 because it has no electronics

dense shard
#

These systems don't supplant you. They supplement you.

#

The blind spot assist is there to give me a 3rd layer of security... on top of my mirrors and my own neck.

#

Back up camera is there as a second layer of security.

#

Radar Cruise is pure luxury, and I love it.

#

That being said. The crash prevention system... I think I finally figured it out.

carmine summit
#

adaptive cruise is another thing that would be nice, but is dangerous if it fails

dense shard
#

Not really.

#

It just stops working when it fails.

#

Meaning you have to do as they did in the 20th century.

#

And work dem pedals.

carmine summit
#

there have been cases of cruise systems being locked on while accelerating uncontrollably

dense shard
#

uhhh

#

you mean like that one Prius?

carmine summit
#

more than one but yeah

dense shard
#

The brakes override the system.

#

The Prius one was a sham.

#

Toyota didn't say it outright, but they dispelled all other possibilities.

carmine summit
#

also Ford had a glitch that never actually occurred but was discovered after that incedent

dense shard
#

what year?

carmine summit
#

they fixed it before it caused an accident

#

I forget, my uncle told me

dense shard
#

So an older system likely.

#

And it was fixed before anything happened.

carmine summit
#

he was the head of Mustang Manual Transmission Systems for a while

dense shard
#

okay, and?

#

Modern car brakes can quite easily overpower the engine.

#

Assuming they don't have an interlock built in.

carmine summit
#

a lot do

dense shard
#

So the issue of runaway cruise control isn't really an issue.

#

More of a what if.

carmine summit
#

I'll stick with my MK3, no cruise, no AC, no ABS, no power windows

dense shard
#

I'll stick with my 'rolla... all those and more.

stoic ledge
#

No AC... Yeah no thnx

dense shard
#

Not a must have in Canada most of the time. lol

#

Alabama tho... gotta have that AC.

carmine summit
#

I mean I've seen 105 F here in the summer

stoic ledge
#

It's also nice for demisting the windshield in the winter

dense shard
#

I've seen 100+ for 3 weeks running this year.

stoic ledge
#

105 F is hot af

dense shard
#

Rest of the time 90s.

carmine summit
#

weather here ranges from -40 C to 40 C

#

-40 F to 105 F

#

roughly

stoic ledge
#

We had 40.7°C this year, a new record

#

Only 1 day tho

#

And I was on vacation so I didn't even notice it 😂

dense shard

stoic ledge

Yeah, I'd spontaneously combust probably

tight cypress
#

dense shard

#

tight cypress

@carmine summit gangang

#

-40c

stoic ledge
#

29°C is still hot xD

indigo coral
#

Wtf lol

#

My next car is gonna have all the safety features

#

I'm decidedly imperfect

#

If the car can help me drive and stay safe then that's great. Doesn't mean I won't pay attention or do my best to drive safely.

stoic ledge
#

Too bad there are many who use it wrong, and they start doing other stuff because "the car will steer/brake/drive"

#

:(

indigo coral
#

yeah no. But it's nice to have because if you make a mistake and the car helps you resolve it, it was 100% worth getting

dense shard
#

Added security is nice.

dense shard
#

Who here said that Daimler was no longer developing gas engines?

#

"On Thursday, news spread around the internet that Daimler is out of the internal combustion engine game, for good. But a spokesperson told WIRED that's not the case. “Daimler AG has not made any decision to opt out of the development of internal combustion engines,” the spokesperson said in a statement, and noted that, because its newest generation of engine was “still in its introduction phase,” there is “no decision to be made on a potential next generation.” Daimler’s goal is still for half of all its 2030 car sales to be plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles."

stoic ledge

Tbh, most gas cars also had "only" 2 valvues per cylinder not that long ago

tropic silo

"Only"?

stoic ledge

It's not like 2v/cylinder is bad

But high end power = nicer

jagged coyote

dense shard
#

Is it?

#

Police chases don't always last that long, and apparently Fremont's Tesla has been in a couple of chases earlier.

#

I'm wondering more about how they keep criminals confined. Teslas are hatchback-y... right?

#

Otherwise, they're quiet, safe, fast, and have pretty long standby times.

No idea, 6 speed that's all I know

Or did they use a different one

M32 is a 6 speed

unreal terrace

I'm thinking at 200hp I'd be churning out close to 500nm

And idk if that small of a gearbox can handle much more than that

It looks like it has the M32 gearbox, yes

M32 = 32*10Nm rated, so 320Nm iirc

@indigo coral Well

indigo coral
#

Not yet. I'm going to take a shitload of physics classes in Uni and later this year though.

shadow osprey
#

Variable valve timing, twin-independent variable cam timing, anything that's variable timing works basically the same way

#

On the end of the camshaft, the gear that connects to the belt/chain/whatever that turns the cam has a solenoid in it

#

This solenoid reacts to a multitude of different thing - oil pressure, rpm, throttle position, etc - and based on the inputs, it can retard or advance timing a certain number of degrees on that camshaft to increase torque

#

It's mainly designed to increase low end torque, since engines are designed to be as efficient as they can at set timing in the higher rpm range

#

@indigo coral ^

#

VTEC works basically the same

AWD is easy. It's either a center diff or transfer case

What's the consensus on LED H4 lamps?

Or aftermarket Xenon Kits for h4

stoic ledge

Most are bad, most OEM headlights are designed specifically for halogen, LED doesn't emit light the same way (1 direction vs all like halogen). The mirrors inside aren't made for that purpose, leading to stray light, possible blinding oncoming traffic

If you want brighter lights, just get good halogens (Osrsm Nightbraker, Philips Xtremevision etc). Aftermarket xenon/Led kits are just bad

@stoic ledge no

stoic ledge

jagged coyote

the fogs aren't actually for seeing, it's for being seen

stoic ledge

Not true, front fog lights are a wider bundle of light, low to the ground to shine underneath the fog. Also, low/highbeams can reflect on the fog (not something that happens often, but it can happen with thicc fog), blinding yourself xD Since fog lights are mounted lower down, it's not an issue

Rear for lights are for being seen, yes xD

jagged coyote
#

yeah, i remember when there was fog so thicc you couldn't see more than 5 meters in front, high beam wasn't helping it, made it even worse

I might just stick to fog lights

No real aftermarket choices for the non-hatch focus (for tail lights)

Oof

desert glen

Fiesta sedans look like pebbles

stoic ledge

Or the 2019 Yaris, which is a Mazda2 sedan? Like why

desert glen

I think the only real reason hatches and wagons arent that popular in the US is because you can get a small SUV for the same price

#

And our roads are bigger

stoic ledge
#

Yeah we're transitioning to those half ass cross-over SUVs

#

I hate it

desert glen
#

Not a big fan of crossovers

#

Big SUVs are still king over here

stoic ledge
#

They are less efficient, no more practical, more expensive and for what? Less handling?

desert glen

They’re nice for road trips

stoic ledge

Full-size SUVs aren't something you see often

Cross-overs aren't nicer for road trips than regular Hatchbacks/wagons xD

indigo coral
#

he was complaining that the power hits higher than his 7.2L V8 powerstroke diesel

stoic ledge
#

puggers

indigo coral
#

lol

#

not like super complaining, more just kinda

#

saying

desert glen
#

I would like the twin turbo ecoboost tho

indigo coral
#

its a decent engine

#

pulls pretty good

stoic ledge
#

Tsssk get the 1.0 EcoBoost

indigo coral
#

why would we get tiny shitty engines when we can get big ones and pay the same taxes

desert glen
#

The NA has good pull

indigo coral
#

lmao

stoic ledge
#

I'd bet over 75% in 🇳🇱 sold gas powered Fords have the 1.0 EcoBoost

#

Others are 1.1 NA or 1.5 EcoBoost

indigo coral
#

thats cause your taxes are crazy

stoic ledge
#

That's it

#

(:

desert glen
#

They sell a good few in the US

stoic ledge
#

No well soon the Explorer PHEV is going to be cheap

indigo coral
#

ye some cars with teeny engiens sell here

stoic ledge
#

Because it's super environmental friendly

indigo coral
#

yeah finally getting a fast car over there thats not tax laden

#

""""super environmental friendly"""

stoic ledge
#

/s

indigo coral
#

it gets like 20 mpg doesnt it?

dense shard
#

I imagine it pushes past 30.

indigo coral
#

EHHH I doubt it

#

our Explorer averages 15

dense shard
#

The Suburban hybrid did 20.

stoic ledge
#

Irl yes, but in the EU test cycle it can do like 90% on EV power only

dense shard
#

The EU test cycle is optimistic.

indigo coral
#

27/29

desert glen
#

Our explorer averages about 19

dense shard
#

27/29 makes sense.

stoic ledge
#

So the results are not achievable in reality

dense shard
#

A bit low still. I'd have hoped 30/30.

indigo coral
#

ah nope thats for the US model

#

the NL model will be less

stoic ledge
#

Yeah the EU cycle is inaccurate, especially for PHEVs

indigo coral
#

its weird the NL gets the 450hp Interceptor type powertrain

#

while the US only gets the 318hp basic one

#

for the Hybrid

desert glen
#

I average about 30 mpg

indigo coral
#

I average about 19

#

17-19ish

desert glen
#

My city/highway usage is about the same

#

So i’m at the median

#

My volvo would do max, 21

dense shard
#

US will likely get the 450 horsepower model in the ST model.

indigo coral
#

highest I've gotten was 24
