Saab started out making aircraft, and then out of the blue diversified into cars in 1949, with zero experience. A lot of their early efforts were hopeless, like the Saab 92 with its two-cylinder two-stroke three-speed manual with no freewheeling device. The two-strokes eventually got a bit better, until they were replaced with V4s of all things. A conventional inline-4 wasn't available in a Saab until 1968, in the 99. But then, ten years later, the 99 Turbo came out, putting Saab in its prime, not as a big player, but as a respectable niche. The 900 and 9000 continued the same trend, and are classic depictions of what the smart guys of the 80s and early 90s were driving. Then in 1989, Saab was bought by General Motors.

GM thought it necessary to introduce their brand of badge-engineering to Saab, so they brought over members of the GM2900 platform (Euro Cavalier, Vectra, etc.) and told Saab to change the bodies around but keep everything nice and cheap. The first time around, Saab only kept 1/3 of the component parts in place, on the NG 900. Then, on the 9-3 and 9-5, they changed so much that even the wheelbase was different...mostly because anybody who's ever driven a Vectra can tell you they're quite bad.

This trend continued for quite some time, with GM sort of catching on and using Saab to engineer a few of GM's own models, especially the turbo ones, and developing what would eventually become the Epsilon II platform. But then 2008 happened, times got dark, and then in 2010, GM pulled the plug. Buyers lined up quickly; the first was Christian von Koenigsegg himself, but GM strung him along so much that he backed out of the deal. SAIC, Mahindra, and others were turned down as well, until at the last possible minute, GM sold Saab to Spyker...but prevented, through nefarious means, Spyker from gaining foreign investment to solve Saab's cash flow problems, and with Spyker themselves suffering from the aftereffects of 2008, Saab eventually closed down in 2012.

The remains of the estate were purchased by a Chinese consortium called NEVS, and they began producing 9-3s again in 2014, but continued cash flow problems prevented them from ever reaching volume, and soon after, Saab AB (the original company) pulled the use of their name.

Koenigsegg tried to buy Saab, but he pulled out of the deal because GM wouldn't give him a close date despite Christian himself asking three times.
