I would try a junkyard/pick-a-part. The bigger ones should have a good enough selection, considering your location. You can also look on craigslist. Don't know what you've looked at already but those are probably your two best bets. Your other option, depending on how bad the damage is, would be to pull as much of the damage out as you can, then just sheet metal the parts you can't. With a little searching you should be able to find somewhere that sells replacement body panels and sheet metal so you can cut out any part that can't be fixed and have it welded back in. That last option is more of a long shot though. I know RAMs were more popular for the sheet metal thing, can't say for Dakotas @opaque sand
Finding a new door should be the easy part, but if the cab is really messed up that bad, I would say you're in for the long haul finding a truck with a good enough cab to use. There's way less salt in Texas than here, but I know they really use their trucks there.

my transmission (6 speed manual) has recently started making a very faint ticking in 3rd gear that disappears when i put the clutch in
i'm aware that this is likely a little chip in one of the gear teeth
as such, i'm going to change the oil on the box to remove any metallic leftovers from the creation of that tooth
my question to you is - is it fine to keep driving with the box like that as long as i keep an ear out for it? I can barely hear it over the engine at the minute so it's not loud at all, and obviously the louder it gets the more of a problem it is

Yeas it should be fine to run.
When you change the pan for the trans check the magnet/ bottom of the pan to see what the shavings look like, very fine metallic sludge is usually what they have from normal wear, steel shavings or chunks mean something is being eaten up relatively quickly in there.
Iโm not familiar with anything other then a e40d trans, or the standard trans for the 7.3. So Iโm speaking general terms.
But It takes allot to kill those manual ones ๐

About the manual transmission: depends, if it's a small chip that can wear out it will be fine it all metal shavings are our of the transmission. If it's a broken bearing or something like that it will only get worse over time.

Iโd just run it till it quits then pull it out and replace it with a different one.

Especially with a transmission, they are one of the highest wearing parts in the vehicle.

It really depends on how you drive. And it being a manual is a plus. They are a completely different beast then an auto. Iโll have to refresh my memory when I get home, not to often I tinker with standards.
With the A4 it had an automatic without a dipstick, thats hardcore milking you for money because you either need to be clever or have the right tools to change the oil.
Plus we hit the oil pan going over some bad train tracks. Started leaking.

also you get a pretty good idea of the health of your engine by the colour, smell and consistency of the oil that comes out of it

Also good to keep in mind is that oil lasts different lengths of time depending on a variety of factors: how hard you drive your vehicle, your climate + the type of oil being used, the type of engine in your vehicle, and length of trips you take, to name a few.
CBC Marketplace already did an oil change scam video revealing that even your dealership recommends checking your vehicle owner's manual for the recommended oil change interval. (as long as they're not being scummy)

I'd try your luck on a VW forum. Assuming you go with a 2.0T, at bare minimum you'll need the 2.0T harness, the full rear drivetrain/suspension out of another T4, a custom driveshaft, and possibly some massaging of the undercarriage.
There are companies that can blend two harnesses together, so you get the T4 chassis harness and the 2.0T engine harness all in one. Probably expensive, but if it's what you want...

But normally the torque figure on a diesel is higher but long gear ratios due to a low redline evens it out, but now the gas version has more torque. So the gas model will be much faster (obvious ofcourse considering it's packing 80 more horses (+40%))
