I've been told that clutches/transmissions are built tough to survive granny driving and new drivers, but I'd just like a second opinion - what do y'all think?

If you can afford to buy a cheap beater car and learn on that

You can burn the clutch or damage gears/syncros as a new player. If you're Careful you won't need to learn on a different car

I've got a friend with an old volvo that he's gonna swap a new transmission into so I'm gonna see if I can learn on the old one

but thats not guaranteed

I've just been hearing different information from different sources, some saying that it wouldnt be a big deal because manual transmissions are built to take a beating, and some saying I'll grind the gears into fine circles

but, i mean, whenever its driven by my friend it has a burning smell

While starting up a hill (using handbreak) keep releasing the clutch into 1st until the car pulls very slightly then add throtle and slowly release the clutch further while droping the handbreak

It's a sports car so I'd expect the throttle to be sensative

What RPM does the engine idle at?

If your throttle cable is too tight it will result in the car idle rpm being high aswell
