Hey guys,
I've never used a claybar before and I wondered if it's any use at removing minor scratches? 99% it's just top coat but basically it's from the damn bush that runs alongside my parking space at home.

coral wolf
#

@languid shadow Sorry to hear about that. A claybar just removes impurities from the surface of the paint like dirt and maybe a very small rock like sand granuels. You would want a wax that specifically markets as having a buffing property, nothing too abrasive.

Polishing not buffing sorry.

Y’all might have some clue on this as I’m new to diesels

#

Went to see a car today, obviously been sitting for a while. Started it up and the idle was horrific, sounded rattly and scratchy but at 1000rpm it was smooth. Shut it off, restarted it and the idle was perfectly fine.

What could cause this? I’m imagining maybe some temp cack in the injectors that was making idling at “low” pressures problematic while a higher idle at higher fuel pressure was fine? It wasn’t on long enough to warm the oil up and it wasn’t a short rattle while the oil galleries filled up either. It got left about a minute before starting again so plenty of time for oil to drain down the engine.

heady ridge
#

just something normal of cars sitting for ages had a old ford laser did the same thing at times (even tho it was petrol it did the same thing)

#

just air in the lines @primal kelp

primal kelp
#

That would explain why it didn’t want to start

#

It’s a push to start and I had to cycle the ignition a couple times

#

Alright, thanks for that

heady ridge
#

not wanting to start is weak battery power

primal kelp
#

Also makes sense

#

I’ll see if it does the same when I go back Wednesday

#

How does air in the lines tie in with it only acting up on idle?

#

That still seems odd to me

heady ridge
#

doubt it with the fuel being reprimed but i would but better in asap as you dont know how long thats sat there

@primal kelp first start over time would have had some fuel drain/evap from the lines and when you started it wile the lines refilled the engine had enough rotery mass to keep running

primal kelp
#

That’s fair enough

#

I’ve had another result which might be the fuel regulator, issue sounds the same, if it carries on after I’ve bought it I’ll replace the regulator

#

It’s a 143,000 mile car

heady ridge
#

i would get the whole engine looked over as you dont know how long its sat there not being touched

primal kelp
#

By the looks of the brakes, it hasn’t moved in a month or two

#

I’m gonna service the thing and get the timing belt changed once I’ve got it as precaution

#

Timing belt is cheap at £60

carmine summit
#

Probably just injectors sticking from sitting, or some bad fuel in the pump. What car is it?

primal kelp
#

Audi A5, 2010, S-Line Quattro 2.0TDI 170PS

#

It’s had 6 owners and averaged 18k miles a year. Some minor cosmetic scrapes and the inside needs a little TLC (stitching and leather polish)

#

Going for a test drive on Wednesday

vital glen
#

Wouldn;t buy it

primal kelp
#

It’s 5k

#

Comparitively cheap just due to mileage

#

You can’t put 18k miles on a car in a year without spending most of that on motorways though, really

#

What I’m hoping is that the mileage is high but the wear on the drivetrain is low

@lime copper well I have a Civic 17 and I am trying to mod the touchscreen cuz it's pretty laggy or maybe I can apply some free source bug fixes if they exist.

zenith pagoda
#

Ok, so would anyone here be able to help? Or basically just google.com?

#

Asking in case someone can refer me to someone or a link.

carmine summit
#

@silk finch the timing chain itself isn't an issue. It's just the guides that wear out. I have never heard of a 4.2 with a broken timing chain. It is expensive to replace the guides though. Could easily cost $7,000 or more at a dealership.

primal kelp
#

Y’all’s thoughts on 2.0tdi vs 3.0tdi? Both at 120,000. I’m thinking the 3.0tdi will last longer. Both are Quattro 6 speed manuals.

#

By the looks of it the 3.0 has avoided the timing chain tensioner problems

carmine summit
#

depends

#

the 2.0l has some common issues

#

I don't have experience with the 3.0l

primal kelp
#

i know the fuel pressure regulators like to go on them

#

3.0 has the swirl flaps as far as i know but i can't see anything else

#

changing the timing chain is an expensive job though

stoic ledge
#

Swirl flaps and timing chain are the 3.0TDI's main problems... No cheap fix. Also, really pay attention to the DSG gearbox, they are around 5k to replace

#

Ah they are manuals 😅

vital glen
#

Might as well buy a lower milage car at that point

carmine summit
#

There was a B6 S4 that I would have owned by now had it not needed timing chain tensioners

#

I like timing belts

#

You put the belt on the right place and it works

#

only thing that wears is the belt usually

primal kelp
#

hit myself an 87,000 mile 3.0tdi. i'm aware of the swirl flaps and apparently the timing chains will go to about 150-180k with regular servicing so i'm well in the clear of that

#

if the swirl flaps go they'll just be deleted and mapped out of the ECU

#

fuck'em

#

if it isn't too much cost then i might get a replacement bushing and rod kit for them but if the actuator motor has gone dead they'll just be going

carmine summit
#

Do they do e tests where you are?

#

If not just delete whatever you don't need

#

and get an APR tune lol

#

if it's a gen 2 then that's around 60 more hp than stock

#

and another 50 ft-lbs

#

Actually those are pretty good numbers

#

300 hp 3.0l

#

100 hp/l

primal kelp
#

the only tune i'll be looking for is efficiency based to bump the mpg on that unit

carmine summit
#

those usually increase power a little too, just because of how they work

#

engine will run more efficiently and make more power with less fuel

primal kelp
#

yes

#

that's the plan

carmine summit
#

I like diesels

primal kelp
#

i'm looking for effiency and i'll take the power bump that comes with it

#

we have a 2.0tdi already and it gained about 40-50hp and 15mpg from it's tune

carmine summit
#

hm

#

I should get a tune like that on my mom's Jetta

#

lol

primal kelp
#

this 3.0 should by that metric gain about 10-15mpg and maybe 60hp

carmine summit
#

That sounds about right, but I'm no scientist

primal kelp
#

napkin math ftw

#

i'd be happy if it stayed at 242 tbh, it's plenty enough for my needs

#

i'm not getting the 3.0 for the power, i'm getting it for the longevity of the engine and the reduced number of problems, as aside from the swirl flaps there's no big issues with it

#

this 3.0 was made after they sorted out the timing chain issues they had on the previous models so really it should be fine until chain-change time

carmine summit
#

I'm not at the "buy a reliable fuel efficient car" stage yet. Considering I have limited finances I should be lol. I'm looking at buying a 1983 Audi Ur-Quattro. Might have to put a VW 1.6D in so I can afford to daily it.

#

Guys, need a bit of help and suggestions please 😃

I did an oil change yesterday - my first one I've ever done - on my 2015 Vauxhal Corsa. I followed the Haynes manual, used correct everything, filter, oil etc. Everything is done up tight to specs.

It drove fine yesterday, for a few miles. Got in it today and drove on the motorway and as I was nearing the end of my journey I noticed it was a little hesitant to accelerate sometimes. Then would catch back up with itself. On the way home it started fine. Sporadic hesitation. Then when idling at some stop lights the idle was rough every now and then.

So I am getting what I assume is misfiring. Rough idle and laggy/hesitant acceleration semi regularly.

Any thoughts??

primal kelp
#

I doubt an oil change would’ve done that

#

My swift used to get a rough idle because the RPM dropped too low on idle, what RPM are you seeing?

#

Check your dipstick just to make sure you haven’t done something daft and put too little oil in but really it would come up with warnings for that

languid shadow
#

@primal kelp Hi mate, thanks for the response. Yes that's what I thought too. I strongly suspect it is going to be the coil pack. Seems to be a relatively common issue on the car. With several people reporting that they ended up getting their pack changed under warranty. That said I am sadly just out of warranty by a few months!

#

Just such a strange coincidence that it's happened exactly after an oil change

#

Wel... A day or so anyways.

primal kelp
#

it's finding which coil it is though

#

i'm assuming it's not throwing any OBD codes, yeah?

#

i unplugged a coil on my swift for shits and giggles and the car didn't even notice

#

it just ran lumpy as hell

#

@languid shadow have you got a mate who has another corsa (or any car) which shares the same engine as yours

#

if it's not throwing up OBD codes then you'll have to eliminate the coils by swapping their known-good ones onto your car and seeing if the issue subsides

languid shadow
#

Huh actually I might.

#

My mate has a 17 plate! But it might be the slightly different engine tho

#

I do wanna go grab a code reader but no lights are on!

primal kelp
#

look on your engine block for a code

#

compare the engine code to your mate's one

#

alternatively pull the coil off of one of your mate's plugs and compare the model/part number to the model/part number of the coils on your own car

#

different engines often share components if they're in the same family

#

if an oil change was going to cause issues (aka improperly fitted sump bolt, mis-tightened oil filter or not enough put back in) the issues would be apparent very quickly as, especially for the oil filter example, the high pressure of the oiling system would force it out and your oil light would come on pretty fast

#

it's almost impossible to fuck an oil change up though, maybe if, idk, you took a leak into the engine block

stoic ledge
#

Corsa with rough idling and laggy acceleration? 99% chance it's a bad coil pack. Common problem with those enigines (I had the same on my 2012 Corsa)

haughty glacier
#

@lavish mauve as far as your radio is concerned you can get whatever you like... the important part is that you get an installation bracket and a wiring kit that match your jeep

#

And for your speakers generally try to get the same manufacturer as the radio, and then just make sure it's the correct size for the speaker slot

lavish mauve
#

Thank you @haughty glacier

haughty glacier

Yeah no problem. Let me know if you have any other questions

tropic zodiac

haughty glacier
#

I was only told that the head unit works best with equipment from the same manufacturer, but honestly if you think about what a speaker is ( a couple of wires and a magnet) it probably doesn't matter lol.

vital glen

@haughty glacier if your amp or amps can power your speakers, you are fine

isn't that expensive

stoic ledge

velvet grove

Sure, but it runs on LPG so it's even cheaper

velvet grove

Yea that’s one thing with older cars,.. they drive like a boat and guzzle the gas back.
Tho if you open them up on a strait away you they really haul ass.

How many hp is she?

stoic ledge
#

83 🤣 (86 on petrol)

#

It's not that bad, but something more powerful would be nice. Can't afford it tho, and the Corsa is actually quite a nice car for someone my age (20)

velvet grove
#

your in Europe?
And yea that’s a good car for someone your age, I am also 20 and kinda wish I had a nice car to drive lol

stoic ledge
#

Yes Europe (the Netherlands)

velvet grove
#

Oh nice! Your the second person I know from there, they seem to be nice people :D

I hear those smaller cars are pretty common over seas, not to many power houses rumbling around?

stoic ledge
#

I'm also very nice :P

Nope, we have taxes based on CO2-emissions (next to normal taxes), which make cars with some power extremely expensive

#

For example the Mustang GT (5.0 V8) is over €100k because of that

#

There are even smaller cars btw, this is the same size as a Ford Fiesta

velvet grove
#

Ok, it’s final I am never moving to the Netherlands!
I drive a 7.3l turbo diesel... step on her and she rolls some black smoke xD

I’d never be able to live there with the cars I have. The smallest engine I own is a 5.2L and the rest are around 7L ..440’s 454’s 318’s 7.3L’s

Did you take that pic? :3

#

And yea there are some really small European cars o..o

stoic ledge
#

Family cars are often the size of a VW Golf/Ford Focus/Mazda 3 of cross-overs the size of a Mazda CX5 - Nissan Rogue Sport (Qashqai)

#

Hehe there are some truck with 7.3L diesel (Powerstroke I assume) but they are often licensed as commercial vehicles so you don't have to pay so much taxes

#

And yes I took that pic last summer, taken in the Netherlands, but you can see Belgium in the background

velvet grove
#

Oh nice! I didn’t really know the 7.3 was rolling around there~ I have a few 7.3’s Both idi, powerstroke and superduty trucks. They are tough as nails. And it makes sense the commercial vehicles are taxed less then the joy riders.

And that’s a nice pic! I’m not use to being able to see so far~

stoic ledge
#

Not many, most trucks (often RAM 1500's) are equiped with LPG to make them somewhat affordable

Pic was taken with my OnePlus 5 😂 But thanks 😃

#

Also, bigger trucks (like the F250/350/450... RAM 2500/3500 ...) are licensed as lorries / semi-trucks because they are too heavy

velvet grove
#

I see~ things are allot different there!
Here they are usually licences as a passenger vehicle, sometimes commercial but not that often~

stoic ledge
#

Probably because the taxes aren't as ridiculous as here

#

Also passenger vehicles can't exceed 3500kg, which is about 7000 pounds (?)

velvet grove
#

I don’t think there is an emissions tax :>

And our main 7.3l drivers are F350’s and one F550. I’m pretty sure they are all licensed as passenger vehicles.

stoic ledge
#

Our parking-spots are too little for those 😂

vital glen
#

@velvet grove I spend a lot of money on project

#

I spent 30k usd last year

#

Fixing up shit

velvet grove
#

XD yea they are pretty big trucks~
But just the right size for and weight for going down some sketchy old logging roads (running over fair size trees at times) :3

#

And what did vehicle did you spend 30k on Awsome?

stoic ledge
#

Licensing a RAM 1500 as a passenger vehicle would cost $85k USD in emission taxes alone

Pretty sure they can handle those trees pretty well !

velvet grove
#

Yea that’s a ridiculous amount of tax... that’s more then the trucks are worth here!!! I paid 1700$ for my daily 7.3l
But I put 7grand into it for rebuilding stuff.

stoic ledge
#

If I was in the US I would also buy a truck, love them!

#

But they are unaffordable here GWmythicalFeelsSadMan

velvet grove

Also Mercedes has finally taken the c (also l) out of CLA, undoubtedly the worst Mercedes possible. Now it's just an a class, and looks nothing like a Mercedes.

coral wolf

I've seen that

coral wolf

stoic ledge

But it's an actual crossover, the gla like the ecosport is a compact masqueradig as a crossover

coral wolf
#

When our gls450 needs maintenance, they give us a loaner, and we asked for an SUV, not a c300. They dropped off a gla. Like WTH that's smaller than a c300.

Audi I will have you know I need that inline 5cyl turbo engine with quattro, and I don't care if I have to unbolt the seat and isntall longer seat rails in the floor, I will have it.

stoic ledge
#

Not really an Audi fan tbh here :P

But there are enough people putting in longer seat rails

coral wolf
#

Quattro is the best and when mated to that 5cyl turbo

#

Damn boi

#

fantano arm chugging

#

Teeny body

stoic ledge
#

"Teeny body" most family cars in Europe are the same size as an A3 (hatchback)

coral wolf
#

It's a Jetta sized car

#

Compared to something like an s540

#

Speaking of the company

stoic ledge
#

That's no S540 🤔

coral wolf
#

I have assembled the best wagen ever

stoic ledge
#

C63 S ?

coral wolf
#

I'm aware

#

E63s wagen

stoic ledge
#

Is it the E

#

Wow

#

Really can't keep the appart

coral wolf
#

LED light trails all over, amg gtr engine

#

4matic

#

I saw a debadged one with no night package, no amg wheels, and removed decklid badging

#

Absolutely destroyed this 370z revving at the light

#

Damn boi

stoic ledge
#

I bet it did, those V8s sound awesome

coral wolf
#

He wasn't ready

#

When a wagen can spit fire and crackle like that from factory. You know they're doing everything right.

stoic ledge
#

They are pretty awesome

#

It's a shame BMW isn't making a M5 Touring anymore

#

Last one was the E61 with the 5.0 V10

coral wolf
#

Oh.. I see.

#

A bavarian sort of automobile

#

As long as it isn't x drive

#

And doesn't require service a lot

stoic ledge
#

The new one's do have xDrive..

coral wolf
#

Nej

#

Bad bmw

#

Get it out

#

I really want to see what apr does to the w12 phaeton

#

It's just such a sleeper

stoic ledge
#

You can turn it off, but that also deactivated the ESP/TC

coral wolf
#

Tc isn't necessary

stoic ledge
#

VW Passat W8 is also a real sleaper

#

But I don't think they were sold in the States

coral wolf
#

Nope

#

We just get the Passat gt

#

3.6l v6

#

We did get the r50 Touareg though

#

What a beast

stoic ledge
#

Top of the line Passat is the 2.0 TSI here

#

Also the EU Passat is a different car then the USA Passat

#

That V10 in the Touareg was nice..

#

The new one is only available with a 3.0 TDI..

coral wolf
#

Ye

#

Might make the switch from the gls450 to the atlas soon

#

Just don't need that much car

#

May go for a gle 43 not sure

stoic ledge
#

That's a downgrade isn't it?

coral wolf
#

Just need smaller

#

Yes

#

Gle 45*

stoic ledge
#

As long as it's not the GLE Coupe i'm fine with it 😛

coral wolf
#

Did you just insult the prettiest amg coupe ever ?

#

Suv*

stoic ledge
#

Still ugly imho, don't like the rear

#

Also, GLE 45 AMG? Don't know that one

coral wolf
#

XD

#

It's the v6 biturbo from the gls 450

#

In the gle

stoic ledge
#

Ah

#

Well you don't see them very often here

coral wolf
#

Hm

#

We have a lot more amgs where I live than regular 3 digit benz'

stoic ledge
#

Or is it the GLE 450 AMG ?

#

Wow, no way

#

AMG's are quite rare here

#

Even normal Mercedes'es, only E200d as taxi/cab

#

Or some hybrid C350e

#

And ofcourse the A class

primal kelp
#

It’s done

#

My search for a car is over

velvet grove
#

I have never had any luck with Audi, they don’t even put a fucking dipstick to the tranny in some of there cars -___-

primal kelp
#

Mine’s a manual thankfully

stoic ledge
#

Nice! 2008? Multitronic?

#

Ah Nice

primal kelp
#

6spd 3.0 manual

stoic ledge
#

Good, no multitronic

primal kelp
#

No CVT bullsbit for me, no

velvet grove
#

The less electronics the better~
And manual trans are tough AF

stoic ledge
#

CVT is fine for a hybrid

#

Bad for everything else

#

(for driving pleasure)

velvet grove
#

There is something majestic about old cars~

primal kelp
#

only thing i noticed about it is that it seems to have some kind of speed-hang

#

throttle pedal responds normally but when you're moving and you've been sitting at one speed for a while, if you inch your foot down it takes a bit before the car starts to accelerate. suspect that's to stop you from accidentally creeping up in speed without you noticing

#

in any case i know it's not a sensor issue as the OBD showed the throttle sweeping normally

stoic ledge
#

Turbo lag?

primal kelp
#

god no

stoic ledge
#

@velvet grove You made that video ?

primal kelp
#

that almost doesn't exist

#

it caught me out bigtime because my 1.6 van is laggy as hell but this just took straight off

#

i got it pointed down the sliproad to a nearby motorway, opened the tap and instantly closed it again because it took off so quick

#

it's triple the power output of my old car

stoic ledge
#

Google says it's pretty normal for those engines.

#

Does it have a sport setting?

primal kelp
#

probably

#

i didn't try to find out

velvet grove
#

Yea about a year ago :)

stoic ledge
#

Sport setting will make the throttle response faster.

I'll check the video when i get home Zyox :)

#

Only video I've got is a 0-100kph (62mph) video of the Corsa

velvet grove
#

💜 not the best video, I was pretty cold and shaky xD
And that car is in need of some help to run smoother~ but not bad for a 40 year old engine.

#

Ooo I’d love to see if you care to share! :D

stoic ledge
#

Have fun

#

For some reason he filmed on 720p 😠

#

Start was meh

#

1st and 2nd gear are ok

#

In 3rd you notice the lack of power

primal kelp
#

my swift does that in just about 10s

stoic ledge
#

Yeah but i bet your Swift doesn't run on LPG

#

It's faster on petrol

primal kelp
#

no it spends most of it's time running on the fumes in the tank tho

stoic ledge
#

Not 10s fast but faster

primal kelp
#

i think the a5 is 5.9s lmao

#

it's gonna take me a while to get used to that

stoic ledge
#

You get used to speed pretty fast

#

Slow takes longer

stoic ledge
#

@velvet grove Nice car that Plymouth, sounds nice too! Don't really know alot about Plymouth's sadly ;(

primal kelp
#

waiting on the dealer to send me some info at the minute about drive-away insurance

#

tbh when i left it was getting on for closing time so it'll probably arrive tomorrow. If not then i'll just have to call them again

#

i've got a £500 deposit on it that isn't refundable so i'll fight for the car

stoic ledge
#

Isn't is like 9.30 PM in the UK ? Don't think they are still working

primal kelp
#

nah they won't be

#

just would've liked to have it today y'know

stoic ledge
#

Yeah i understand

primal kelp
#

i didn't realise the deposit wasn't refundable, they've got two types apparently

#

a £99 refundable deposit if you're going to pick it up with your own insurance or a £500 non-refundable deposit if they need to arrange drive-away insurance for you

#

i suppose it covers them incase they fork out for the insurance and you don't turn up to collect it so, fair enough

#

they're a well known dealer - Evans Halshaw, so it's not like they're some backstreet garage who'll swallow the deposit and disappear

stoic ledge
#

It's not on their website any more 😛

primal kelp
#

really?

#

it's still on autotrader

stoic ledge
#

I searched for a black A5 with a diesel and manual transmission

#

Al 2.0TDI, no 3.0TDI

primal kelp
#

it's not black but nah it's gone

stoic ledge
#

Isn't it?

#

Oh I see

#

It's gray

primal kelp
#

it's dark grey

stoic ledge
#

Wow

primal kelp
#

fits with the white interior nicely

#

black car on white interior is yuck

#

but i find dark grey and white okay tbh

#

autotrader ad is still up

stoic ledge
#

Oeh I like light interiors

primal kelp
#

that car literally has every single option except cruise control

stoic ledge
#

Wait whut

primal kelp
#

weird right

stoic ledge
#

You can probably retrofit it tho

primal kelp
#

maybe

stoic ledge
#

But yeah nothing is standard on Audi's

primal kelp
#

i'm not too worried

#

i spend all my time driving without cruise control so i'm very used to it

stoic ledge
#

Same but for a car at that pricepoint (new)

primal kelp
#

it is defintiely odd

stoic ledge
#

Has B&O stereo, but no cruise control

#

Audi makes everything an optional extra, previous gen A4 didn't even had a light in the glovebox as standard

primal kelp
#

yeah apparently dealers can retrofit it to the car

stoic ledge
#

Nice

primal kelp
#

might be worth looking into depending on the cost

stoic ledge
#

Probably adding the stalk and activating it with VAGcom

primal kelp
#

new lower column cover, stalk and probably an ECU flash

stoic ledge
#

Not even an ECU flash, just checking a checkbox with VAG com

primal kelp
#

🤔

velvet grove
#

Definitely a standard car @stoic ledge and honestly not bad for under 100hp! x3

And I’m going to restore that car when I finish the truck I’m restoring, she only has a 318 with 130hp but it does sound nice, tho it does have a big ass hole in the exhaust pipe xD

primal kelp
#

i'll have a word with the dealer, it's obviously going to be expensive

stoic ledge
#

I know some VW owners, bougth the car with some options (so camera's were available for example) and then used VAGcom to turn on all the missing options, so the now had a fully loaded VW

primal kelp
#

i'd rather not bodge the work myself - if i fuck it i can't fix it

stoic ledge
#

Quite expensive that retrofit imho for cruise control...

@Zyox does sound nice indeed, I'd love to see a pic of it when it's done :)

primal kelp
#

a steady foot will do me fine

stoic ledge
#

Pedal to the metal ;)

primal kelp
#

actually if i alternate between 100 and 0 at the right frequency, i could possibly PWM my throttle inputs to average out at cruise

#

$42 ? Damn for that money, even I would buy a VW

lol I was right, they made an error on the ad. $4200. Also the car is already sold.
