I have a kenwood 1200 watt sub hooked up to a 400 watt Kenwood amp, and it was working for awhile and then just stopped. The light is still on, on the amp, and a buddy of mine said its probably just in protection mode.

I have no direct experience telling me so, but I've always heard it's not good to underpower a subwoofer that's expecting more power. Seems silly to me on account of...you know...quiet songs and quiet parts, but I dunno.

You're never supposed to run a sub at it's full power, you always run it with an amp under it's power limiting, and bridge it if necessary, otherwise the sub will blow up. Either way this sub is the problem, it was repaired before I owned it and they did it incorrectly, so I'm going to repair it myself.

You still match your amp and sub power levels. You avoid burning it up by not listening at full volume (unless you have a clean, distortion free signal) all the time and having an appropriately set gain so you don't clip your signal.

A sub that's rated for 500W RMS will handle 500W pretty much all day. But the dynamic changes in music make it so it's never really getting that high of power for very long. Similarly, you can definitely overpower it for a short while (using say a 600W amp so it the amp doesn't have to work as hard). Again, proper gains make the difference.

#

I use the 500W example since I have a 500W Kenwood amp in my Jeep pushing a Rockford Punch 10" sub that's rated for 500W RMS. I've hammered on this setup for about four years now without any issue. I have the gain set on the conservative side and don't turn the radio up high enough to cause signal distortion (my weak link the entire setup is the deck). Pay attention to RMS power and ignore peak power, it's a bullshit number that's just there to attention grab and make people think their system is more power than it is.

That said, if you have a kenwood 1200W sub, it's actually probably 350W - 400W RMS, so look at getting into that range if you need to replace the amp. Just make sure it'll handle the impedance load of your sub. For example, my RF is a dual voice coil with each coil being 2ohm, so I have them in series to have a 4ohm load. I had the amp before this subwoofer, as I had a free 12" 4ohm Phoenix Gold Xmax. Ended up putting a hole in the surround and decided I just wanted something smaller that I could tuck away into a trim panel, so I bought a sub that would match the 4ohm load of my amp. I wish I would have instead got an amp that did 500W at 2ohm and got the version of my sub with 4ohm voice coils and put them in parallel. Now if I ever want to upgrade my amp and run it in a 1ohm load...most amps designed for a 1ohm load are pushing a lot more power than I need.
