I don't know how it is IRL, but the brakes are hard to control. What works for me, is to turn off the electric brake when using the brake lever.

I took this image from the web, I don't know how it's called in english (I play in spanish), but to deactivate the electric brake when using the brake lever you have to move this switch up, it's the marked with the red arrow.

Even with that is not so easy, you should apply a notch 4 or 5 from the start of the braking, then adjust if the brakes are too much.

On any route, I know that at 800m from the objective (stop) my speed should be 100km/h. At 500m, 80km/h. At 300m, 60km/h. All trains brakes are different, but it's a good point to start.
