#About map size

The overall world map is going to be big featuring 8 different elemental regions separated into multiple smaller biomes/areas.
In terms of in game map size, what i would really want to do is a big semi open world map that allows players to travel the map seamlessly with no loading screens etc. That has been quite challenging in the past though and even the demo/prologue shows that the performance wasn't the best with a big map. I'm considering a different approach of maybe keeping it fairly classic and having a string of various middle sized maps connected via loading screens so every level is still pretty big but they aren't a part of one big seamless world. This would allow the game to perform the best but would limit the open-world experience so i still have to think about it.
ive seen games that had a transition zone, where it will load in the next area without an actual loading screen. if you want to avoid loading screens, maybe background loading in a similar manner will work? idk how they did that though. nor do i remember which game, or games, did it
