Hey hey!

We're back with another live-action topic to discuss... For our 20 Days thread, we've decided to let you guys share your thoughts on the bending portrayal!

🌀💨 The bending styles in the animated series were iconic. Now that we've seen the live-action adaptation in action, let's dive deeper into how bending is portrayed. Discuss your thoughts on the bending scenes and effects.

Questions to think about:

  1. How did the live-action adaptation trailer handle bending compared to your expectations?
  2. Did specific bending scenes stand out to you? Anything that exceeded or fell short of your expectations?
  3. Are there any changes or improvements in the portrayal of bending compared to the animated series?
  4. Did you notice any subtle details in the bending movements? How do they contribute to the authenticity of the bending styles?
  5. What bending techniques are you looking forward to see in the live action?

I’m in a weird state on it all. There are a couple moments that seem to look good, like Katara blocking the fire, but I haven’t personally felt that impressed by the bending. I struggle to put my finger on what, whether it’s the speed, suspension of disbelief with the CG vs my brain (something about Nilah in the one picture is doing the same a bit), how the trailer shots are cut reducing the impact of the moments/hits.

The follow-up struggle for me though is not knowing what would adjust this, and I’m hoping seeing the full shots in the show will alleviate this some.

I will say though, I do think they did well getting the bending to correspond to the movements. The movement styles the characters use all feel fairly different, as they should.

At this point, I'm guessing that, comparing it to the original show, it will be at least as good as the Harry Potter movies compared to the books

Which is neat

All kinds of bending look great so far. We have especially seen that water and fire will look very very good. Air we haven't seen much of yet, same with earth.

But overall I'm very confident that will also look great!

The teaser trailer showing Kyoshi/Aang shooting down from the sky with an airblast looked really good. Also the main trailer showing Aang use a staff attack during the Blue Spirit sequence looked pretty great too. The Bumi fight is iffy to me so far, but I'm sure the full sequence will look better than the short clips

I was only expecting something believable (unlike this scene of so many earthbenders for so little in the end... and the whole firebender can't create their own fire stupidity).
So I'm pleased. It looks really good so far.

The fights between Katara and Zuko looks awesome, same for the one between Aang and Zuko. The effect of fire being deflected looks awesome.
I also want to see the fight with Aang and the Blue Spirit. Bumi earthbending looks good too.
I wasn't expecting a lot for the bendings, so I'm really glad they all look so nice 🙂

A lot of the bendings look pretty similar than in the animated serie to me. I just want to have a closer look at Iroh's bending.

With Bumi, we can feel all the power and strength in his movements. Considering he is a earthbender, it's awesome. Katara is all smooth and fluid, just like in the cartoon.
Sozin is bending with his hand open, like the fire is coming from is palm and not his fist. It's like claws coming at his opponent.

The bending technique I'd like to see... breath of fire and later Iroh's breathing flames. Katara's whip too.

i like how, when they block the fire coming at them, it leaves ash and smoke all around, such a good detail

#

one curious thing that was said, maybe this was in the original too but "only the Avatar can master all four elements." does that mean others can dabble in the other elements? I'm kinda thinking like how Iroh invented lightening redirection

Yeah, that was said in the original as well. While benders can't "physically" bend more than one element (with the avatar being the exception), they certainly can pull inspiration from the other elements into thier own style (much like Iroh did), and I would imagine, because different benders live together in Republic City, they likely pull inspiration from each other, which has resulted in some new styles as we see in the show. Which kind of shows how much bending has evolved.
