I had to get this "on paper", it was burning a hole in my brain.

Weapon needs to be readied (like momentum is necessary to access lunge) in order to use most attacks. Ready stance does not allow for as much movement, vulnerable to melee except maybe a disengage option.

Weapon is limited shots until guts refresh.

Weapon has "quick draw", an attack that hits maybe one or two past vslash range 3 times for 2, 3, 4 damage and can be used without being readied. First hit is jab speed and is just damage, no interrupt; second hit is h/vslash trade speed with h/vslash kb and stun rules; third hit is slow and also has h/vslash rules. Getting hit somewhere in the efficacy order stops further shots (mech lets go of trigger)(maybe a resource to full fire through? Probably good for a different piece of equipment, tbh). Third hit will realistically only connect on targets finishing movement into range, or targets that got stunned by the second shot, which sends them into knockback. Quick Draw ends in ready stance

other thoughts: variable aim (attack speed is slow enough to be Moved away from not just dodged, but can adjust a square or two at further ranges to predict hits), AoE similar to Barrage, height aim (shoot down from on high/up at high targets)

potentially have it be projectile based. Projectiles would have to be fast, but at some point reactable. Maybe they're reactable at a range that you'd be able to adjust aim to hit, a la the variable aim suggestion, and you'd have to predict and dodge closer up but the fire couldn't be turned to hit you at that angle, maybe.

strafing?? after readied, can step sideways and attack. Slow, maybe 1 square of movement

This is all just thoughts!

Ranged weapons will certainly be interesting as they are developed. See what limitations are best for balance, what makes them too strong, etc.

If you feel like it, you could use this as a base and create attack descriptions laid out like I did for #1289758158751010836

Coming back to this real quick to say that if you just had to choose a square to shoot when using a gun weapon it would possibly help with some of the standoffishness of current meta. changes a guaranteed dodge from a passive player to more of a 50/50 scenario

Yep, some weapons being instant use cases to catch the obvious plays will be nice. Will give even more incentive to move forward in many cases too, depending on the weapon used. If the weapon targets a specific spot, without a trajectory, it would work, but if it targets a pathway to a spot, it has a completely different pressure.
